23.02 we were celebrating boyfriend's b-day in western Ukraine and now I'm refuge in Berlin without any thoughts for future. love this song since childhood, something good in this hell
i'm sorry. As i believe - soon it will be the end of the world and we all will have to die, because we stopped loving each other. i think that i will get the same life again- because it's the best for me . i'm not sure about others. I believe in God's love and protection so it just will be fine. i'm also in a difficult situation because i'm depressed and think about dying or using drugs. as for me trip hop is the best kind of music. good luck !
This album is so hard-hitting. There are a handful of songs (this one included) that could practically be considered punk if it weren't for the softness of the instruments.
Absolutely, theres a punk sensibility in a lot of PJ's work. Not so much in the style but more of the deep rooted musical influences. Some of the riffs and nuances a lot of punks would have killed for. Total genius but clever and subtle.
What you call punk is counter culture really. Punk is just a short lived incarnation of counter culture that as soon as it was created it started evolving and gave way to a thousand equally groundbreaking movements. And as far as I’m concerned, along with Nick Cave, PJ Harvey is the most important and challenging artist born from this counter culture.
That bugle call at the beginning and in the middle makes me shiver. The doomed Charge of the Light Brigade, the noise, the screams from dying men and horses, the smell, confusion, terror. Typhoid carried off more men than war, shitting their guts out in a land far from home, crying for their mothers. PJ manages to poetically describe all the filth and misery of war in this remarkable album.
How is our glorious country ploughed? Not by iron ploughs How is our glorious country ploughed? Not by iron ploughs Our land is ploughed by tanks and feet, feet marching Our land is ploughed by tanks and feet, feet marching Oh, America Oh, England Oh, America Oh, England How is our glorious country sown? Not with wheat and corn How is our glorious country sown? Not with wheat and corn How is our glorious land bestowed? How is our glorious land bestowed? Oh, America Oh, England Oh, America Oh, England Oh, America Oh, England Oh, America Oh, England And what is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is deformed children What is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is deformed children What is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is orphaned children What is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is deformed children
pj harvey has been one of my favorites since the early 90s but I gotta say this is the first time she's ever intentionally covered political motifs, that's part of what makes this new record so incredible, because she's said in interviews for the past 2 decades that she can't see herself writing songs about political issues because she never felt capable of it without sounding cheesey, and here we see that she transcended her own artistic barrier.. she's one of the few true artists living today
It's been driving me insane where the drum sample is from. I've just realised it's a slowed down part of "The Bed's Too Big Without You" by The Police. Ahhh I can rest now lol!! Love this song as well, gorgeous feel to it.
Whoever would allow the first 27 seconds of a "music video" to linger on wind rustling an old oak tree has my vote! Could England really have a better cultural ambassador than PJ Harvey? She is a true, real, living artist in every sense of the word. Her music is much, much bigger than herself. So deserving of this year's Mercury prize!
Sums up English and American culture perfectly -- exploit and harm peoples for economic gain, using military force if necessary: "What is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is deformed children What is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is orphaned children"
She captures it succesfully, that dread, that deliberating of what the future holds during a world war. I love that other comments on here are in the same vein.
What an incredible song. Both the songwriting and the production, just so special, I've never heard anything like it. And then you layer that text on top of it, maybe the most acidic irony I've ever heard in music. I'm not English but i almost feel pain and sadness for English people who listen to it for how piercing and dark it must feel for them, and unfortunately it applies to many other countries just or almost as much.
does anyone know if she has had a lifetime achievment award or not, so deserves it. I know she won the M.M.P. I cant remember when her music was not part of my life. kinda like the fact she hasnt gone commercial and remained true.
+Samantha Williamson Not to my knowledge but give her time . Funny thing she won the MMP for what IMP are two of her weaker albums. Much prefer "Dry, "to give you my love" "let England shake " and esp "white chalk" which I think is a master piece
+tripnotico And yet underrated by the majority. Stories from the sea etc is just about my least fav album. But it would Poly the Mercury music prize in the UK. My fav band of the last 20 years are Low. The last two albums are superb but White chalk is s till my fav album since the millennium. Liked Polly since the John peel sessions and saw her first live in 92 on the Dry tour. A small venue (max 300) that was only half full. At the end myself and a couple of friends were standing right in front of the stage shouting loudly "more more" she looked at me with a questioning look. That to me said "really" ? ps like the wheel. A return to more rockier music ?
+Keith Bate wow you were so lucky seeing her live whe she was just beginning. theres this performance by pjbai cant get enough of is rid of me at big day out sydney so raw
A genius princess of the music scene. One of the uks fine original talents. Along with the likes of Radiohead, Ian Brown, Tricky, Massive Attack, Ghostpoet, The XX, Scroobius Pip, Gary Numan, Portishead, Unkle, AllFlaws
This song is so beautiful. I speak over a decade from first hearing it. Everything from the bugle call to the melodies that form the structure of the song itself. It is a very interesting and intelligent construct. God bless you Polly Jean.
“What is the glorious fruit of our land? Its fruit is orphaned children.” And I was wondering why this song got stuck in my head on 4th of July...🖤 🖤 forever PJ Harvey.

Ms. Harvey doesn't need to overtly demonstrate her humanitarian concerns to protest the way things unfortunately, are. Never didactic, this is clearly uncomfortable territory for her. She uses her position as one of England's greatest artists, to speak her mind without certain retribution. As almost always occurs with her music, her political protest is disguised & layered. The critique is even more potent because it's so seething coming from such a beautiful & tender mind.

This song still sounds with the same freshness, strength and emotion 9 years later. A classic. My love to Polly
her first albums still sounds fresh, she really is something else!
Please to bite the monkey lip smell.
The best song in the best album of the past decade ❤
PJ is one of the most important artists of the last 30 years. Staggeringly talented.
And staggeringly underrated!
Je pense aussi et du fond de mon coeur
it's true
One of the ten best albums you should listen to before you die....
My comment😉
One of the great rock albums of this generation.
Which one?
Agreed. This one will be remembered.
4 years later and yep
Best album of the last decade, and best this century so far.
@@TheTestingGrounds only about 4 good songs in it, the rest of it is a bit forgettable. over hyped that's for sure.
...not just talented, she's a genius. Let England Shake: one of the best album of 2011!
I would say in modern rock history
@@jmps8073 I would say her New LP will be out July 7th

Polly is an artist that I have followed, and gained inspiration from, since her first album. I think she might be my nr 1.
The album, Is this desire, is my personal favourite, close to my heart.
I agree. Angelene is a amazing song!

A great song from an album that is a masterpiece. Even when her songs may have sad lyrics, somehow her music is still exultant.

I would say this is less rock ,and more of a mature kinda pj album, with messages in her songs.
How can u not but love this woman...?
That back beat is from 'The bed's too big without you' by The Police.
the trumpet makes me laugh when I'm high, love it
it is totally out of key and rhythm but she doesn't care :D

Yes! Those eyes 👀
Her sounds are a yearning i dont know quite what for ? but i just love her music its so meaning full and unique xxx
Maybe it's the yearning for our England, of Gerard Winstanley and Jerusalem, our England? Not the "upper classes" England?
