Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we're taking a look at the Saris Bones EX 3 trunk mounted bike rack, right here on our 2012 Toyota Prius. We do you have this available as the two or the three bike option. I say go ahead with the three bikes, so that the more the merrier. If you wanna carry around some bikes and you've got your Prius, your options are limited if you don't have a hitch. Ideally, please get a hitch receiver so you can get a hitch mounted bike rack.
That gives you so much more stability. You also have the option of using a roof mounted bike rack. But for the Prius it has that sunroof plus the solar panels, so not everyone likes that option. So finally, the next best option is going to be a trunk mounted rack. And for that option, I think this is the best one.
The Bones EX3 has the dog legs that just give you the extra versatility for things like your spoiler or for your hatch. In fact, one of my friends took her car out with us, this is her Prius, and she drove to Tennessee and back, so about 200 miles, and she said that this was super sturdy, super stable for her bike and definitely gave more grip, compared to her other trunk mounted racks. So we'll talk about how it holds onto your bike. There's gonna be three touch points. So you're gonna have three straps.
One is down here for your seat post or that tube that goes down, then you have two up top. And, there's gonna be an extra point, which is gonna be for your front wheels. So you're gonna have a cam buckle strap included with your bike racks. So please use that to secure your front wheels so that this doesn't happen. And once you get three on there, it may be kind of tricky to tighten that all around your bikes, but definitely worth doing before you hit the road.
So we'll start by taking this off. You press this lever and that disengages the strap, so you can just push or pull that up and out. So that's one and two and three straps. Once those are all released, you can then just grab your bike, bring it through those straps, and you're ready to hit the trails. So this has a 35 pound weight capacity per bike. If possible, though, try to get your heaviest bikes closer to the car and then your lighter bikes away. You have these straps that are holding it in. This helps prevent the sweep, but then you also have the grips inside the straps just to give it some extra cushion and hold on better. It's gonna add a little bit of length to the back of your car. So measuring from our bumper to the end of the bike rack, it's gonna be 25 inches. So when you're making those sharp turns, parking into a really tight spot, especially with the bikes on there, don't forget that they're back there and are gonna be a little trickier. Another thing with trunk mounted bike racks is there's definitely gonna be some contact between your bike rack and your vehicle. It's unavoidable. But fortunately, they do some things to make it a little bit easier. So first you have the feet. You're gonna have the dog leg feet up top, and then where the license plate is. Then you're gonna have your side straps that go into your trunk, your lower straps go into your trunk, and then your top straps are gonna go up and into your hatch. If you want to, there's zero contact here but if you want to, you can run those top straps through the top legs. Now some things about the lifestyle of using this rack is when you have this rack installed, please don't use your rear wiper. That will make contact with the trunk rack. Also, you will not be able to open up your hatch. And, while it's nice that your license plate is visible, without the bikes on, your backup camera will definitely be covered. I tried to park this and I was in reverse and I couldn't really see through the camera and had to rely on my side and rear view mirrors. So my personal thoughts about the Saris Bones EX 3 is if you really need to get a trunk mounted bike rack definitely go with this one. Again, I highly recommend getting either a roof rack or a hitch for your Prius. We have them right here at etrailer, fit guided for you if you need one. But, I understand if you just need a quick and easy bike rack solution, this would definitely be the way to go. And that was a look at the Saris Bones EX 3 trunk mounted bike rack on the 2012 Toyota Prius..

Are there worries about the glass breaking?

As long as the rack is installed according to the instructions, and you don't open or close the rear hatch while the rack's in place, there's no worries about breaking the rear glass.
