You should read the Silmarillion. For the uninitiated, The Silmarillion is a history book of Tolkien's Middle-Earth, the land in which The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place.
So happy to see you react to this after Band of Brothers, these are two of my favourite pieces of media ever, and you did such great justice to BoB, I feel like you’re going to get a lot of out this trilogy. And don’t feel like you have to read the Silmarilion unless you enjoy pain - it’s very dense and nowhere near as joyful to read as the main books. Best of luck with your exams!

Pretty much. An engaging film that is well and tightly paced can make it so that the audience barely notices the time that's passed.
I had never seen the extended cuts until last week and that's pretty much what I felt!
No other Movie is this good where you think 4 hours is too long then get so lost and interested that once it’s over you just craving more lol
Meanwhile me, watching all the movies in a row like every 2 weeks😂
The fact that Bilbo is able to let go of the ring is an act of extraordinary strength.
On another note. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is not just far and away the best movie trilogy ever made. It's an actual masterpiece of art, like the Mona Lisa.
It is why Bilbo isn't permanently corrupted by the ring. He let it go...
I noticed in the beginning the narration by Galadriel she says "then something happened the ring did 'not' expect". I doubt this as the ring needed to make some kind of move to get out of that cave and Bilbo was the best chance for it to escape the clutches of Gollum. Just laying around on the cave floor 'unclaimed' would serve no purpose for it. Agreed about the status of this trilogy. The making of vignettes are almost as captivating as the movies themselves.
@@kathleenhensley5951 Bilbo did what no living being in all of Middle Earth ever did, past. present, or future - save for Tom Bombadil. And Tom was a special case. Very special.

@@terrylandess6072 i think maybe the unexpected portion of it is that it was found by a hobbit, like maybe it was intending to be found just didn’t expect a hobbit to be the one. At least that’s how i always tried to understand since i thought the same thing that it was definitely trying to escape the cave.

i mean he's great but the movies aren't an accurate representation of his character, he's much more prideful in the books but you're ok with it because he is the destined king that will return, not because he's as 'selfless' as modern tastes require for a great man. he is The King and he knows it, the movie version isn't the real Aragorn. The sword is his, not given to him reluctantly, and he charges into the Paths of the Dead without hesitation, not just because it must be done to win even if it's scary, but because he is The King and does not fear them and is confident that they will bend to his will and honor their vow. Aragorn is a Chad.
That would be Sam though.

I love that, even though Bilbo’s story was mostly over, Tolkien sent him out doing one of the most impressive feats in the history of Middle Earth. Willingly giving up the ring, especially after it had been at work on his mind for over 50 years, was a titanic act of willpower that many of the wise and powerful of the world wouldn’t have been capable of. And in typical Bilbo fashion he just walks down the road singing, this monumental achievement going mostly unnoticed and unappreciated by the wider world.
The Lord of the Rings movies are truly epic. Once in a lifetime, maybe once EVER, level greatness.
The only good Lord of the Rings movies are the theatrical versions.

I think Peter Jackson did a great job transferring Tolkien's epic to the cinema. Although he couldn't avoid some cinematic pitfalls, he did so respectfully and with great passion
yes, he respected the source material actualy - imagine that :) Even though the movies are hugely flattened comparing to the books there are tons of good ideas for adapting and expresing of Tolkien's ideas. And Jackson did great job by using many small changes to "the letter" to express the faithfulness to "the spirit" :) Even in the hobbit trilogy.

Dense books like LOTR just can't be directly adapted to cinema exactly as it originally happened because not everything so easily translates in the sense that there are things you can get away with in a book that you can't in film and vice versa, and if they tried to do it exactly the same in every single respect, it would probably be at least twice as long as the combined extended versions already are. The reason PJ's adaptaion deserves respect is that there was clearly great passion and love for the source material, and the changes that were made were done respectfully in a manner that would be more fitting for the medium while maintaining the spirit of what was written.
It's actually kinda funny how well Peter Jackson made the movies and how much money he had for it, basically all the movies he made before LOTR were some cheap horror comedies. And suddenly he gets an insane amount of money for three monumental movies.

The way the one ring works is that it exploits the desires of the bearer. The greater the desire, the more control.
the entire trilogy is a masterpiece in cinema. Virtually flawless.
I thought movies would get even better after this, well I thought wrong. This trilogy is still the pinnacle of cinema coming from someone who never read any of the books.
I don't personally agree that they're flawless, but with that said, I don't think what flaws they arguably do have in any way meaningfully detract from their excellence. They're my favorite movies I've ever seen, and I've seen quite a few movies.

11:42 I just happen to love the scene where Bilbo has to leave the ring. The intense string music. Bilbo slowly turning his palm with the ring almost unwilling to drop, and when it hits the floor there is no bounce, just a dead stop. I love that this can make an inanimate object feel like it has its own personality and menace about it.
and then as he steps out of the door he takes a deep breath and stretches his shoulders as if some great burden as been taken from him
The heavy thud that the ring makes upon coming to "a dead stop" is totally out of proportion to its size! Yet another aspect of movie making that needs special treatment, that can add "thickness" to the story -- sound effects!

@@Centane no, not imho. They are an abomination to Tolkien's memory, full of non-canon story, including an elf/dwarf romance (utterly ridiculous ) , the Dragon is pretty cool but thats it, they took a 3-400 page childrens book and tried to fill 3 hrs long movies with it. Effectively making it almost as long as LoTR(which was approx 15-1600 pages of original material)
@@Centane The Hobbit films are decent movies. But they are by far not as epic as Lord of the Rings. If I would rate Lord of the Rings with a 10/10, The Hobbit would be 7/10. Has it's moments but shouldn't expect the movies to be as good. If you can enjoy the movies without comparing them to LOTR, I recommend watching them. :)
This is the first LOTR reaction I have seen from the perspective of someone who has watched the Hobbit trilogy first. Enjoyable watching the connections you made.
But when she says "he looks like Dumbledore'.... the hearts of everybody watching dropped just a little. 🤣

I highly recommend the extended editions for the second and third movies. Trust me, so many big scenes are added to them. They feel more complete.

@@breezymango4113 It really casts Boromir into a different light when there is the flashback scene with his brother after a battle. It shows that Boromir wanted the ring only to please his father, not for his own personal gain or glory. Folks who haven't read the books and only watched the normal editions of the movie might think that he was weak-willed and easily corrupted, when that's not the case at all.
This story was read to me 65 years ago when I was 10, and I have loved this amazing saga ever since. When Peter Jackson's first movie, "The Fellowship of the Ring" was released I jumped at the chance to see it. Remember we had to wait a year for the next one after each part! I love watching these reactions and enjoy reliving these experiences each time I view (or re-read them). Such is the power of imagery and writing that arose from the gift that Professor Tolkien gave us and the genius of Peter Jackson et al. (with Howard Shore's brilliant score) in bringing this inspiring epic to film in a way no one, especially J.R.R. thought was possible. Lovely reaction BTW. I am now 68: I read The Hobbit & LoTR to my daughter when she was much the same age as you, and she, like me, has loved them ever since.
I remember the first buzz about Peter Jackson doing the films, and hoping against hope that they would be done justice. And of course they were. And Howard Shore's scores are among the greatest glories to be found therein.
My mother read the hobbit and the LoTR before I could read it myself. I read it as soon as I could properly read and got my library card. When this movie came in, I was serving my national duty in army. I just got in home for weekend pass, managed to change into civilian clothes and got just in time to watch this film in local theater. My mind was blown in as I walked in back in star bright winter night back. I still remember how mindblown I was.

Ah but there is my friend. For you see the greatest and most fair among all things crafted by the hands of mortal are the three Silmarils, Gemstones carved with such skill, material, and reverence that no other works of Men, or Elves approaches their splendor.
Love that you already are saying that everyone needs a Sam, but even better everyone should try to be a Sam! Sam is the real hero of the LoTR
Yes, I'm always wondering why people never seem to say they want to be a Sam.
Sam is a hero, Frodo is The Hero. Don't know why this is so hard for people to grasp. In the books, Sam had the ring for five minutes outside Cirith Ungol and it was already shaping up to be a trainwreck before he got his "hobbit sense" back and realized he couldn't do Frodo's job.
It hits deep. :)
Frodo's true strength was mercy. If Sam had been the Ringbearer, he would have killed Gollum and nobody would have been there to destroy the Ring at the final moment.
Many of us older, life-long Tolkien fans were spellbound when these movies came out. They get better and better as they go, much like the books.

I remember sitting with my husband in the theater quite literally, at the edge my seat. I didn't want to miss a single moment of it. It was sad they didn't have Tom Bombadil, but it is true, that he wasn't essential to the main story.
Centane, I love how you're taking in these movies. In a way, it's almost best that you know The Hobbit, but know nothing about Lord of the Rings. Prepare for an emotional journey.
Also, I love the way he says 9:46 - "Today is my one-hundred and-d-d-d-d-d-deleventh birthday!"

As a Tolkienite and someone who absolutely loves Peter Jacksons movies, its always fun to see someone watching them for the first time. :')
This is the best trilogy ever for sure. Its just not easy to rewatch again and again because its rougly 4 hours each. Part of why I watch almost every reaction to relive it in a condensed way.
a note about "the flight to the Ford" ; in the book Elrond doesnt send his only Daughter and the Last Born Elf in Middle Earth out looking for the party with 9 nazgul abroad. He sends out a powerful Elf-lord named Glorfindel, and he doesnt ride with Frodo to the Ford, he sets frodo on his horse, Asfaloth, and commands the horse to bear him over the river, and in the movie it makes it look like Arwen casts some spell to make the river rise up, she doesnt, its automatically triggered by the Nazgul attempting to enter Rivendell, this change was made both to give liv's char more screen time and to avoid having to intro yet another character that wouldnt be relevant for the rest of the story
And i have to say, i like it better that way.
The half dead frodo who conviniently prepares to fight the nazgul at the only place where he could win is stretching the "intervention of god" a bit too far.
@@seimen4348 actually i agree, to a point. I didnt agree with jackson's choice to make Arwen out to be a spell caster, rather than just showing the river rising in response to the riders attempting to cross, which is how it happened in the book
I’m so glad you’re enjoying it so far. As for the Nazgul (black cloaked horsemen), they are not afraid of water. When Arwen crossed the river she crossed into elvish land. Elvish lands in middle earth are very often protected by strong magics, which we were given an example of with the tidal wave of water.

I’m probably voicing a lot LOTR fans watching you but it’s so endearing to see you smile so much and enjoying the film. Seeing you experience the true magic of Middle Earth for the first time with the genuine reactions reminds me of when I first fell in love with it. Thank you so much.
I don't think I've ever seen someone watch the hobbit before lord of the rings. It'll be interesting to see what you think having watched it this way around
I LOVE how you lit up when you heard "Gimili, son of Gloin," because you have least know about The Hobbit." Most reactors, even doing the Hobbit movies afterwards, don't put it together. Kudos!
Also, Legolas the elf is the son of the elf king who imprisoned the dwarves on their way to the Lonely Mountain. Will also explain Gimili's and Legolas's behaviour to each other. They are come form kingdoms near each other with "get off my lawn" personalities.
Peter Jackson did an amazing job creating a sense of menace and dread, contrasted with the happy and care free.
They should have hired him as the lead visionary for the Amazon project that is turning into a bastardized abomination that will completely tank.

The Orcs (the small, wiry "monsters") are making "an army worthy of Mordor," as commanded. The new soldiers (taller, more massive) are called Uruk-Hai. There's all sorts of supportive literature like atlases, dictionaries, histories of Middle Earth, and one book to describe them all: "The Silmarillion" in which Tolkien outlines the civilizations and their histories in Middle Earth.
The silmarrillion is basically a much better written bible, without all the contradictions etc. plus you don’t get burned alive for not believing in it.

I'm so glad you chose the extended versions to this. LOTR is the greatest movie trilogy ever made. I am really looking forward to your LOTR journey. Viewers can feel the passion exuded from everyone involved in its making and I already see that you do as well.
14:56 "He's a bad guy!" Saruman was a powerful good guy, but he got corrupted because he was the most powerful wizard and arrogantly thought he could take on Sauron, and Sauron corrupted Saruman. Saruman genuinely wanted to use his powers for good. Saruman used the seer stones without care, and Sauron was one of the ones linked to the network, and Sauron corrupts all. Also Saruman was so hecking powerful that he was confident that he was gonna use the One Ring for his own will. NO ONE can use the One Ring other than Sauron, and the leader types never realize that. It's not a weapon you can wield; it's just Sauron's soul that corrupts everything.
This was by far the best reaction of this movie I've seen. Your genuine excitement, scene by scene is just a joy to watch. You really showed case the fun and joy many fans had when we first saw these movies. The movies get more and more detailed and emotional, enjoy!
Between this and Chernobyl, I'm very excited for the coming weeks from this channel. I would love love love a Lord of the Rings book video when you find time to read them. If you thought the movies were good, oh boy, those books are legendary.

Lord of the Rings, more specifically Fellowship of the Ring, was required reading in my college English class.
You're in for a ride. These are the movies that give me the most emotions out of everyone. I'm so glad to see you watch and react to these, I feel like i'm discovering them again, even though it's been so many times now lol

This is the greatest set of movies to ever be made. The 3rd movie, Return of the King, won the most Oscars on record with 11 (tied with Titanic and Ben-Hur). We are all very excited to see your reactions!!!
Right next to Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings is a favorite trilogy of mine.

The guy who plays Saruman, Christopher Lee, was probably the biggest Tolkien fan in the movie. He knew Tolkien personally, read the books once a year every year since their publication, and was thrilled to be cast in the film. Also, he was a legendary actor and had been a spy/assassin in WW2. NBD though...
These are my favorite movies ever made, hands down. I applaud you jumping into the deep end with the extended editions first. Most people would find their run times a barrier to entry, and it helps that the theatrical versions work perfectly well on their own. The original films are perfectly excellent on their own and feel very tight without feeling as though there's much that's missing, but the extended material just adds so much extra depth to the characters and worldbuilding. My only regret is that I haven't seen all of them in the theater.
I never get tired of seeing people experience this for the first time. I got to introduce my sister-in-law to it! Liked and subscribed, Centane!

I was like you when I first saw these movies in theaters. I had read the hobbit but not the lord of the rings. I loved the call backs to the hobbit. Great reaction.

Definitely recommend breaking these ones up. Sometimes people even do 3 or 4 parts per movie, but I've never seen less than 2.
5:13 Before Dumbledore, in fact, if you think of the book, Gandalf is probably the prototype of almost every wizard who is not evil.
8:20 Those are the director's children. They appear again in a later film, playing human, rather than hobbit children.
23:01 Gandalf (and for that matter, Saruman) has a staff, not a wand or a stick.
24:22 They are called 'Uruk-Hai' or 'High Orcs'. Goblin and Orc are different names for the same thing, these ones are bigger and do not fear sunlight.
Not sure if you know but Legolas the elf is Prince of Mirkwood, the forest with the spiders in The Hobbit. That whole issue with Thorin's company being in their jails kind of adds to why him and Gimli didn't get off to the best start at the council
It's refreshing to see a Lord of the Rings reaction that's blind in terms of the books but not for The Hobbit. FYI keep tissues near by at all times with these films

I remember watching these movies the whole way through when I was like 5 years old so now everyone complaining about 2 hour runtimes make me laugh a little bit 😂😂😂
Well this is rare, someone who knows the Hobbit well but is totally new to LOTR. Great reaction from a point of view not often seen!
The books are indellibly printed on my brain...so I can say that while the films are great, there are a number of differences between the books and the films that are thematically important (not just things that needed to be adapted to put on screen either, whole scenes were inserted from scratch, others were deleted, characters like Aragorn are *very* different in ways big and small, there are a lot of changes that didn't need to be there). So definitely read the books too!

I love youre reaction to this film so far ♥ :D I cannot wait till you upload the other parts =) Here a short note to the reaction Boromirs to Aragorn, Boromir is a very strong charackter and love his homeland Gondor. He is a very special person from Gondor to say it without spoilering . And as he found out that Aragorn is the heir of Isildur and possibly the King of Gondor he do not understand that he has chose the exile life instead of going to gondor and rule his kingdome so he said that quotes to aragorn "gondor has no king, gondor needs no king" because he is kind of mad :D
There's this old Dungeons and Dragons joke I read somewhere.
The main character: "I will avenge my brother's murder!"
The fighter: "You have my sword!"
The ranger: "And you have my bow!"
The barbarian: "AND MY AXE!"
The necromancer: "And your brother!"
i'm sure others have already explained but the nine black riders/nazgul/ringwraiths are the nine kings of men from the opening prologue who Sauron gave the rings to. they lived long extended lives like Gollum, gained power, but eventually they faded into wraiths controlled completely by Sauron. as for the other rings from the prologue, the dwarf rings were all lost by this point and don't factor into the story, but the three elvish rings are all still working in the story world - we meet all three bearers of the three elf rings in the first movie at some point, tho only one is ever explicitly identified. these rings were not made or touched by Sauron but his knowledge was involved in the making, so while they can still be used wo falling under his dominion, all that these rings help to maintain in Middle Earth, all the magic they bring, will fade away if the one ring is destroyed. the films don't really focus on this plot point at all but it is present in the books. merely weakly implied in the films.
How much I wish to be able to watch this movies for the first time again.... you lucky girl.....
Ohh Peter, the love and respect you showed for Tolkiens source material. These movies will be the foundation for generations to come.
I've seen dozens of lotr reactions, but this is the first time i wathced every second of someones reactions video (or leave a comment). Absolutely a joy to see your smile and happines while wathing this masterpiece. Can't wait to see more, there is so much good stuf coming. Had to subscribe, greetings from Finland!

I just realized that at 4 minutes into this reaction, that man and woman hobbits did a Will and Jada Smith! He was all smilin and cool with it til she gave him the stink eye then he disapproved to placate her!😆
Fun fact irl Christopher Lee/Saruman was friends with Tolkien and he was actually given the permission to play Gandalf in any media representation of lotr but as we see it didn’t come to be (luckily because he’s better as Saruman).
Also forgot to mention he’s Count Dooku in Star Wars.
I highly recommend the extended edition version for the next two movies as well because it adds a lot of important context.

I mean, she is watching the extended edition for this one and loves it so far. I don't think she'll switch to the theatrical release after Fellowship.
Of the 3 films, I actually think FotR works better in the theatrical version. Unlike the other two which really do need the extended scenes for more context. I mean, for example, showing Isildur go invisible completely ruins the shock of seeing Bilbo disappear at the party.
