Here's the blog post! sarahrenaeclark.com/best-adult-coloring-apps/ Sorry it's so late! But this has a lot more info and a huge breakdown of the features of each app, plus links to find them on the App Store and Google Play.
Thank you for uncovering the copying of color palettes! I’m the Product Manager of Pigment and we create and name all of our palettes, so they’re all completely original. That’s so unfortunate that other companies are copying our palettes because it takes a lot of work for our artists to curate them!
I didn’t want to make any assumptions as to who was the original creator, but it felt pretty obvious to me after seeing the quality of the offending apps compared to the quality of Pigment. It seems someone is offering a “template” app (maybe as a Fiverr service?) that was used to build at least 20 of the apps I reviewed, using those stolen palettes.
I didn't try as many apps as you did, but I tried quite a few when I first got my iPad. Most of them didn't allow for much creativity or individuality when it came to coloring. I ended up settling on Pigment. With the yearly subscription, it's relatively inexpensive and there are so many coloring pages to choose from. I found it to be the most versatile, allowing me to be as creative as I want to be. I love coloring the grayscale images, as well, which I haven't even tried in an actual coloring book yet. I love the different brushes and the fact that Pigment has a TH-cam channel with lots of tutorials for digital coloring that has allowed me to learn some really cool techniques.

Me: can't decide between 3 types of milk at grocery store Sarah Renae Clark: signs up for ONE HUNDRED coloring apps and figures out the best one. Well done, Pigment. You deserve it.

Child, you got that right! Btw not sure where you live but here near big city California, after the 3 choices of fat level, really 4 in milk, then you have source; cow, goat or plant based, there must be 4-5 of those and let's not leave out powdered or canned. It is stupifing the amount of choice. Okay I got carried away but yes I marvel at all of these things mostly Sarah covering apps and pencils.
I’ve tried a couple of these, and as a 14 year old who is a free user, I’ve found that Recolor is the best for me. It’s really easy to use, and I think that it’s better than pigment for me. Then again, pigment frustrated me because I was already used to using Recolor and it was very different 😂
I've tried Color Therapy but found that the learning curve was a bit high. And I just wanted to get in there and have fun. I have experience with digital art, but it was always with layers in Photoshop. I still think I would get the hang of it with a bit more time and effort. But I really want Pigment now, if I spelled that right. I like that I can key the hex numbers from your Coloring Catalog, as I love it! It is so great for inspiration. I have to give you props for trying all those apps, so we don't have to waste our time and money. Hope you got your many back. Thanks!
I wish there was a Colouring app that had movie scenes you could colour in, I saw there was one on the google play store but it wasn’t compatible with my iPad
Yes...everybody wants your money! I hope you were able to get out of all of those apps! Wow! That was so fun. I had to watch again! I think I would enjoy one of these apps, but choosing the right one could be really hard. Thanks again, Sarah!
I am going to be absolutely honest with you when I discovered colouring in a digitally form it was an absolute revelation. See majority of time my hands and fingers don't work due to my spinal autoimmune arthritis so they are in a lot of pain so physically colouring is not possible but the digitally form makes it less painful and continuing to relax and colour.
1:31 I cannot tell you how much my mom is in LOVE with that games, originally she just saw it as an add and downloaded it like what she does to every app and then I found it played with it and then she tried it since then everytime she has some free time she plays with the app
I play a lot of simulation apps so advertising coloring apps that has assigned colors wasn't a good introduction to digital coloring books since I do like to color more freely. You showed some really cool coloring apps that I never thought exist, realizing that what was shown to me was more than color assignments. I still like coloring my own drawings but it just feels nice to know that the coloring community can find a friend wherever they go on social media. edit: a friend with similar hobbies. (tOtaLlY nOt inTo CoLoRiNg bY tHe wAy)
I like Happy Color (the second app you found) because it's so under-stimulating. I used to create my own art with pen, and then color it with colored pencils. The results were beautiful and it was fun to express myself and play with colors to make it just the way I wanted it, but it usually took weeks of work (and tons of hand cramps) to create a single piece, not to mention how long it would take for me to finally draw something that I was inspired to take into inking stage. It was mentally and physically draining, beautiful as it was. With Happy Color, it requires so little thought and exertion that it's kind of cathartic, and lets me relax my brain - total opposite of creating an advanced drawing by hand. The only real complaint I have towards Happy Color is that they reuse shapes kind of often. For instance, you can be coloring a tropical scene and there are the same flowers repeated 50 times on the screen, sometimes not even oriented differently or flipped. I tend to like stuff with animals in it, and there's this one tiger that they have reused in different coloring pages at least six times. It's awfully distracting but I understand why they copy/paste. There's a lot of crap on that app, but also a lot of genuinely nice art. If you're just looking for something relaxing to do and don't feel like thinking too hard, give it a try! It's definitely not for everyone, but it's good if you just wanna tap your screen and make colors happen.
I like Happy Color, too, but the picture selection isn't great. Quantity? Yes. Quality? Not so much. As for color, too many have garish, super-saturated colors. Happy Color went through a phase where warm colors were featured, but cool colors were banned to the basement. I'm happy to say, the mix of colors now is better distributed across the spectrum. If you like pastels, this isn't the place for you. Overall, though, I believe it's one of the best color-by-number options. Yes, they have to make money, but the incredible number of ads are annoying. They've really piled on the ads over the last year--to the point it detracts from the Happy.
@@catbriggs8362 I too like Happy Color but I plan to try at least one of the apps mentioned that allow a person to have more options. Happy Color picture quality seems to have gone downhill a bit lately (I liked the more complex drawings, especially the Art category). I think a couple of their best artists whose drawings I loved have either quit or been fired. And then sometimes they’ll have a drawing I like but the color palette they chose for it isn’t to my taste. But you get what you pay for and it’s nice to have a relaxing free app. I don’t mind a few ads as long as they allow you to quickly close it, if it’s not to your interest. There are some that are really irritating.
I like happy colour but my favourite is probably paint by number many different categories plus one of the few ones I’ve found that let you use it in landscape mode as well which is ideal if you want to charge your iPad at the same time
Thank you so much!! I've been looking for a coloring app that was more than just click and fill, but I gave up after hours of searching. I truly appreciate your honest reviews, time and money spent.
when i see the price of those apps , i suddenly feel like bamby walking into the annual bloodthirsty hunters Con . once again thanks for your hard work , it is as always very informative and fun .
one of my favorite apps is Pixel Art (with a pixel rainbow chameleon) you get a piece that is color by number, unlike most pixel art apps, you can color outside the correct squares, but it does keep the number so u can see which u got wrong, and it dulls teh color a bit. The best part, its free, you can remove ads if you wanted, but basically all of it is accessible without paying
@@colouringandcommentsDoes any of them allow you to access your own photo gallery because I’ve got digital drawing at the moment and yet I can’t colour them. Basically someone requested for me to colour them and I actually want to take it this time.
Sarah, I enjoy your posts and products immensely! I can’t believe I missed this one! I laughed so hard when you mentioned Pigment using hex codes, especially since I just started spending time with Pigment! What sold me into going Premium was that feature and guess what is sitting next to me, My Color Cubes I purchased through you!! Also, if I need a color scheme quick I just bring up the color catalogs on my other screen! Yep, I am your Color Cube poster child. Thank you for all you do!! ~Melody
Love your accent and especially your personality. Thanks for uploading this. and saving others a lot of time and frustration. New to this tablet stuff, and noticed most of the coloring apps were games. If I wanted to play a game, I'd download a game. What I want is to color for relaxation and creativity. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video. Appreciate it immensely.
Thanks a bunch for doing this video. It seems like whenever I have a coloring question you've got a video on it. It's awesome to know someone else is just as random as I am...lol! Thanks for doing the leg work, now on to coloring!
Haven't tried any digital coloring apps except those photoshop and Adobe illustrator ones. On a lighter note, Just want to say thanks for the coloring diary. It arrived this morning. I thought it was colored pencils but it was the diary. 😍😍😍
My favorite app would be ColorTherapy. There is a subscription but you can do most things without it. It is add free and there is a wide variety of colors. You can chose to do color by number or to make your own drawing. There is also lots of tools so you can actually draw !! The app includes challenges ranging from easy to advanced or you can just pick a picture and start coloring !
Thank you so much, I've been looking for coloring apps that aren't color by number and I've finally found someone who actually shows non-color by number apps.
I love the app called "Coloring" with a hummingbird being painted in by a paint brush. This app allows you to do your own colors, shading, remove the black drawing lines (the fill option will be gone). It also updates with new pictures about one a week..
Color Therapy is hands down the best coloring app out there. It is literally as if you were hand-coloring the images but with a ton more tools, including other artists' renditions for inspiration to get you started. Please do a deep-dive review of this app. 😍
Very useful and have tried many of the ones you did and came up with the same results! BTW I got your planner and it is AMAZING!! Thanks for all you do!!
This is great! I love how Sarah is willing to pay cash just so we don't have to. I actually just downloaded Lake Coloring Books and Journal and it's great so far.
I just want a simple coloring app, no subscriptions, no payments, works perfectly offline. Is it THAT hard to find a good coloring app like that anymore?
There actually are some, one of my favourites is called paint by number there are loads of different categories to choose from all free but you just need to make sure you at least start the pictures that interest you then you can continue colouring them when you are offline as I think all the pictures are downloaded from a server when you have a connection
7:51 I remember I played a different version of that game (also made by disney) alot back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I had a disk version of it. I even made Christmas cards with that game to give to my classmates!
I haven't finished this entire video yet, but I'm addicted to April Coloring! It's Paint By Number, there are new pictures daily, categories to unlock, and you use your finger/stylus to paint versus one-click. I've been using the app for years!
I use “Recolor”, but since I have started colouring in with paper and colouring pencils, I use the app less and less. I love the tactile effect of pencils and paper.
Thank you so much for the help! I have always used Coloring Book for Me, but been unimpressed by the lack of features. I love Pigment so far and can’t wait to keep coloring!❤️
Thanks for all that work! I had become a bit frustrated and bored with the few colouring apps that I tried, I thought it was just me having too much expectations!
I think this video is amazing, especially for artists or aspiring artists or just anyone in general who wants more creative control in adult coloring apps BUT I’ve been using Happy Color (the second app you tried) for almost 4 years now and it’s hands down my favorite. I have trouble sleeping at night (lots of anxiety) and I need something extremely simple to wind my mind down and Happy Color & Solitaire are my go to apps 😅 it’s really nice if you want to color, but don’t want to put a lot of thought into how you’re going to color since everything is already picked out for you. With that being said though, for days I want to be more creative I will definitely check out your top recs because those look really fun ❤️ also, just in case I’m not too late, don’t forget to cancel those subscriptions! 😂
Happy color is and has been my favorite app for over a year. It's not my favorite because I play it the most, it's my favorite because one drawing can keep me entertained for 5-15 minutes, most take about 10, and it helps me relax. When I'm waiting for someone to pick me up, I usually play happy color as I can just stop playing when it's time to go and continue later. On my old phone, I could only have a few apps and I decided that apps like Messenger was more important than games so in the end I could only have one game and I chose happy color because of the reasons I already wrote.
Yeah I like happy colour as well but it doesn’t let you use it in landscape mode so you can’t really use it comfortably while charging, one of my favourite ones is just called paint by number it lets you also use it in landscape mode, has multiple categories of art work to colour and is totally free
Thank you so much for making this video! I am so happy that it appeared on my recommended, because I've been struggling with finding the right coloring app for me. Lake would be perfect, but sadly it isn't available on Android buuuut I'll definitely try out some of the others that are!
I couldn’t seem to adjust the wheel in any way to get brighter colors… weird! I could go lighter and darker, but it was always slightly muted. I’ll look into it more as I get the blog post finalized.
I’m new to your channel and loved how you reviewed each app. I use Color Therapy app because they have coloring contests, unique colors, gradients, you can blend, mix and relax and be social with others on the app if you want to. The app is FREE, however to unlock their robust features and get rid of ads, I pay 56.00 USD per year( this my first year paying😀) They also have a monthly option of 7 or 9 bucks per month, but the Free version is great too!
Thank you so much! Thanks to you, I’ve downloaded Lake, Recolor, Pigment, Colorfuly, and Chroma! These apps are so much fun to use and I found these to be my top favorites thanks to this video! They all meet my expectations and requirements, and I cannot thank you enough! I appreciate you so much, and I hope to see more of these kinds of videos in the future!
Oh, I totally forgot the name of second app! Thanks for reminder. I like that they have "art" category with actual paintings. It's usually the most challenging one, so I sticked to it most of the time, and so didn't really mind lack of control over colors.
Downloaded pigment, it's exactly what I was looking for! I don't mind a monthly subscription as long as it's $10 or under. I am also interested in tayasui color. Based on the reviews they add more pages regularly and it's a set price. A set price, no ads and no subscription is something I can dream of lol. I also have procreate but tbh I like the ease of the pigment app instead of having to import coloring pages, etc.
I've been using happy color for years. i paid the small 1 time fee to turn off ads forever. (i don't usually do that) but i love it that much. My only complaint (but not really) is it comes out with content faster than i can keep up.
Great video, Sarah. Thank you for taking the time for going through all those apps. Those subs add up very quickly and some pictures are not that inspiring for me to color. The only one that I really liked was the Recolor app you’ve featured. It’s a fun app, love the gradient fill colors. I’ve actually posted some of the pages I did on my Instagram. Made me feel like a real artist for a bit. Thanks again for the vid. Hope you’ve cancelled the memberships on them. ☺️
since android doesnt have the Pigment app, what i like to do is go to google and search for some colouring pages whether their simple or not, and then open up Ibispaint, (ibispaint is a very good freemuim drawing app with 100+ brushes, tools, and so much more, for android and ios artists) then in ibispaint, import the colouring page, and proceed to use the ibispaint app itself as a colouring app :)
There was a coloring app that had Mystery pictures ....you simply tap on the numbers, and a lovely picture would appear. I can't remember which one it was 😥😥
You should’ve tries pro create, it’s free! You can also adjust the brush size, there are game made brushes and my favourite thing is that you can create you own brushes!
Howdy and happy day!!! Holy granola!! That’s a LOT of apps! Pretty cool! I might could afford a tablet if I stopped buying markers, and pencils, and paper and… LOL. 🤣😂 Guess I’ll stick with analog for a bit hahaha Thanks for the in-depth reviews! Chipper cheerios! 🙂
As someone who loves coloring im still waiting for a color by numbers app where you can actually color in and not just tap it. I use. The coloring apps pigment and lake. I enjoy lake but it could be better

you get a piece that is color by number, unlike most pixel art apps, you can color outside the correct squares, but it does keep the number so u can see which u got wrong, and it dulls teh color a bit. The best part, its free, you can remove ads if you wanted, but basically all of it is accessible without paying
i'm so addicted to that app. you can also make your own pictures to color in pixels from your gallery!
My favorite art game is Color Number, basically the same thing except you can post your art you’ve made.
Yes love that app for anime pictures lol
I love this app so flipping much. It's helped calm me down from many sensory overloads since I downloaded it in 2018
Her favorites starts at 16:58 start
My Top 4:
1. Chroma 19:30
2. Recolor 20:17
3. Colorfly 20:53
4. Pigment 21:30
Thx

Can’t find Colorfly in the App Store
@@colouringandcommentsDoes any of them allow you to access your own photo gallery because I’ve got digital drawing at the moment and yet I can’t colour them. Basically someone requested for me to colour them and I actually want to take it this time.
@@MobyTheMerpup1852 did u find any app like that? Because i m also searching for an app like that
Wow! Thank you for all of your work! Your descriptions, summaries and conclusions are so valuable. 😃👩🎨
Thank you!
You really are hardworking Sarah,We really appreciate your hard work and passion😊❤
We sure do
Color therapy was fun too. They have contests and challenges like use two colors, do a coloring in gold and silver etc. I used to be subscribed to it
Thanks a bunch for doing this video.
I'm obsessed with Zen Color. It's honestly my favorite thing to do while watching TV. The colors are predetermined but it's so satisfying and pretty
Okay, but i used to use recolor, but couldnt remember the name! thank you for helping me find it again!
Wow! This video would have taken so much effort to make!!! My thanks to you and your team. *thumbs up* indeed
7:51 I remember I played a different version of that game (also made by disney) alot back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I had a disk version of it. I even made Christmas cards with that game to give to my classmates!
Color therapy is my favorite they have upgraded this app so much it’s great
Same
I haven't finished this entire video yet, but I'm addicted to April Coloring! It's Paint By Number, there are new pictures daily, categories to unlock, and you use your finger/stylus to paint versus one-click. I've been using the app for years!
I only have Samsung Galaxy so I don't know if this app is in the Apple store or if there are differences.
You should try color therapy! I really love it. There is shading, glitter feature, and there is a color drop mode too! Aswell as a pen
I use “Recolor”, but since I have started colouring in with paper and colouring pencils, I use the app less and less. I love the tactile effect of pencils and paper.
I use Recolor when I feel like colouring but don't want to actually get my colouring pencils out or I don't have them with me.
I cannot tell you how much i appreciate this! This helped me so much, thank you for using so much time for us❤
Thank you so much for the help! I have always used Coloring Book for Me, but been unimpressed by the lack of features. I love Pigment so far and can’t wait to keep coloring!❤️
You should do a video where you try every drawing app (ie Ibis Paint, Sketchbook, Photoshop).
Thanks for all that work! I had become a bit frustrated and bored with the few colouring apps that I tried, I thought it was just me having too much expectations!
Love your vids you transform kids colouring books into amazing works of art! ❤️🎨🖌
I never thought I‘d see someone do this. Very useful video. My mum actually has some of these
Thank you! I just bought a mini iPad and I just love to color and you doing this saved me time on what I like!
Lake has been my go-to coloring app for quite a while now. And the colors aren't always muted, you can change that quite a bit.
I couldn’t seem to adjust the wheel in any way to get brighter colors… weird! I could go lighter and darker, but it was always slightly muted. I’ll look into it more as I get the blog post finalized.
@@SarahRenaeClark most of the brushes require multiple passes (lifting your finger between strokes) to increase opacity!
Happy Color is my top fav, absolutely got addicted to it awhile back. Had to kerb my colouring on this app. But is a definite plus in my book.
Really good idea for a vid! Keep it up and you'll have more fans than you can handle 😁
Oh, I totally forgot the name of second app! Thanks for reminder.
I like that they have "art" category with actual paintings. It's usually the most challenging one, so I sticked to it most of the time, and so didn't really mind lack of control over colors.
The app Lake sounds amazing and I wish I could install it, but ofc, like many other apps, it's an apple store app.
Thank you for this! I've been dying to find a good coloring app and your in-depth video helps so much!!
happy color has a lot more complex ones in the art category i’ve been using that app for years it’s my absolute favorite
such a great review on coloring books for the iPad!
Hope you haven’t forgotten to cancel any of those subscriptions! Great vid
You try so hard in you vids!! Ty for entertaining us all!! ❤
i remember downloading recolour on my ipad back in 2018... loved it and was a good past time of mine! meaning to get back into it...
i haven’t used coloring apps in a LONG time but my all time favorite to use was always ReColor🥰
I love this, but I do wish there were timestamps for each of the apps.😁
What an amazing video! I loved this, thank you for going through all that pain for us!! :) Downloading Pigment now.
Thank you so much for all of your work! I needed the help!
Bad news about the Pigment app: on Android the link on the blog post takes you to an outdated strategy game that does not work on newer devices
Thanks Sarah! I Just bought my iPad pro and searching for great apps like these. I have procreate but have to learn from the start.
This is the video and info I was looking for. Thanks!!
Thank you for your review on the apps. I just started color by number coloring too. ❤😊
Thanks for this. This is what I needed for my sister's tablet.
Why am I soo attracted to these artists 🎨 thumbnails? 🤣😂💕💙💖 don't know which to watch first!🥰😍
never knew i needed this video but so helpful!
I've been using happy color for years. i paid the small 1 time fee to turn off ads forever. (i don't usually do that) but i love it that much. My only complaint (but not really) is it comes out with content faster than i can keep up.
I don't know if you have done Pen up since I'm halfway through the vision but IT'S AMAZING MOST DEFINITELY SHOULD TRY IT!
Pen Up is made by Samsung, so unfortunately is only a play store app
Great video, Sarah. Thank you for taking the time for going through all those apps. Those subs add up very quickly and some pictures are not that inspiring for me to color. The only one that I really liked was the Recolor app you’ve featured. It’s a fun app, love the gradient fill colors. I’ve actually posted some of the pages I did on my Instagram. Made me feel like a real artist for a bit. Thanks again for the vid. Hope you’ve cancelled the memberships on them. ☺️
OMG You are so patience and skill ! Thanks so much for this useful video.
I use color pop, I do agree it doesn’t have enough brushes and stuff, but I like it! It’s very relaxing to me :)
Recolor used to be so good! Most of the pages was free but now most of them are the paid subscription
Faves
6:03 - lake colouring and journal
Pigment (dunno the timestamp)
Recolour
since android doesnt have the Pigment app, what i like to do is go to google and search for some colouring pages whether their simple or not, and then open up Ibispaint, (ibispaint is a very good freemuim drawing app with 100+ brushes, tools, and so much more, for android and ios artists)
then in ibispaint, import the colouring page, and proceed to use the ibispaint app itself as a colouring app :)
I do love procreate (it isn’t free though) but it’s not a “coloring” app which is why it wasn’t featured here. It is amazing for drawing and coloring!
Ok if it isn’t free then sry I haven’t downloaded in a long time!
Howdy and happy day!!! Holy granola!! That’s a LOT of apps! Pretty cool! I might could afford a tablet if I stopped buying markers, and pencils, and paper and… LOL. 🤣😂 Guess I’ll stick with analog for a bit hahaha
Thanks for the in-depth reviews! Chipper cheerios! 🙂
This is so cool! You earned yourself a new sub! I love this!
Omg! Tysm for the pin!
The fact she uses her time just for us💗
I am still confused about which apps you had to pay for and how much they were and which ones were free...
As someone who loves coloring im still waiting for a color by numbers app where you can actually color in and not just tap it. I use. The coloring apps pigment and lake. I enjoy lake but it could be better
I used to have Recolor, and it was so fun 🥰
Another great work Sarah! Since when did you start digital art? Btw, you did such a great great job😊❤
Since this week! I've dabbled once or twice in the past, but never really given it a proper go until now.
@@SarahRenaeClark ok😊
You’re my new fav person . Hello from Singapore ❤!
The look on your face at 1:27 and the slight slam of the Sharpie! 🤣
