I love history, and I found this eisode fascinating. Your video just popped up in my feed, and I am thrilled. I like to let my imagination wander into the sampler and wonder about their lives. Thank you so much. I am going to watch all of the other videos to catch up. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you.
Hi Birgit! That you for answering my question about neat stitches. I need to just pay more attention and practice more. I enjoyed so much your sharing of the antique samplers. They were so beautiful. I too have learned much from watching your Flosstubes. I really enjoy them and the magazines! Oh how charming! I have some old Crochet booklets that my mother had collected. I will have to save them and keep them. Thank you again for your wonderful Flosstubes!
You are so welcome Virginia! I wish there was a more precise way to tell you. I always know when I'm stressed lol my knitting is much tighter than 🤣 I am so glad you are along with me!
Thank you for using your time to do your Flosstube videos! I often see something new or look at the old in a different way. Your descriptions of the French over dyed threads today was so informative. Thanks for your perspective.
they are really fun to stitch with - specially since I'm comparing 🤣 wasn't planned to have two hoop projects at the same time...The WDW is definitely a knotty bunch but also such pretty colors. The Histoires is just plain gorgeous. She also has some really lovely patterns.
Always so interesting! I love to watch you unframe the old samplers! Enjoying the old needlework and all the interesting treasures you have! I also have all the Mary Beale patterns and newsletters! Enjoying your older posts!
Thank you for doing this video. Loved seeing the antique samplers that you are going to chart up. Hope that they will also be able to stitch them on Adia. I can't see to stitch on smaller squares. Wish i could see to stitch on them.
Thanks You Birgit 🌸 Another encyclopedia of info .. and inspiring pieces. ❤ Common sense answers… And yes please no beeswax etc. I’ve been stitching 🧵 since 74 My intro to Samplers was through JoAnn Harvey , of The Examplarery . And I was hooked…♥️ I’ll be ordering threads from Sophie … they are lovely colors.. Look forward to Ada Davis :-)
As you were flipping through the old magazines I saw an ad for Best & Co , which triggered a memory. My grandmother purchased my sister and my Easter outfits from them each year, usually a dress with a matching coat. I particularly remember a blue linen number! Thanks for the memory!
I enjoy your videos very much! The way you share information on historical needlework and the beautiful pieces you show. It was fun seeing the old needlework magazines today. I actually have an old Home Needlework Magazine that my Mom had received. Obviously, it isn't as old as the one you showed, but they are so fascinating to see. The thing I enjoyed most about this particular videos was your beautifuly bright, sunny space, the gorgeous stitched pieces behind you, and the wonderful bird songs in the back ground. I could have listened to that all day long! Thank you for sharing!
Boy that Kathy is going to be busy!!!! I soo love them both! Your sweet German accent is lovely! My kirche in WI is one of the oldest German churches in that area. They continue to do a gottestant service for Easter and Christmas! Not to mention the decor is very European! BTW I love the birds in the background!!! And yes it’s Tuesday!!! Hugs!!!!
You are tooo funny, yes "that" Kathy will be quite busy 😍 That is really wonderful that there is such an old church there! I hope all went well yesterday! *Hugs*
Good Morning, Birgit! I loved watching your video, and I am slowly catching up on watching them all 🙂. I enjoy learning so many interesting things. When you showed those beautiful threads from France, I decided I just had to have them too…I went to Sophie’s Etsy shop and treated myself to the entire collection 😮🤗❤! You are so right, the price is very reasonable. I can’t wait to receive my gorgeous new threads! Thank you so much for sharing, because I’d never heard of them. Have a lovely stitchy week. 🥰 Meline
I have newly discovered you on floss tube. I have purchased two of your patterns Alice Young and the Flight to Egypt. I have started Alice Young and am enjoying the stitch. I have been stitching since the 80s. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your beautiful pieces.
As a lifelong hand stitcher and needlework teacher (I am your same age), I agree wholeheartedly with you about not using any conditioner on thread. Thread has “memory” thus straight off the spool it wants to curl, same thing with floss when beginning to stitch. The cure is to stitch slowly at the beginning of a new strand to give the thread a new “memory” to remain straight. For proof, just look at how straight the floss is when nearing the end of a strand. Thank you for sharing your great advice and education!!❤
Thank you so much for your generosity! You share and chart your beautiful antique samplers and your lovely work. The herb gatherer is wonderful, I’m on the side of several other ladies who say, leave her in her matted frame, until/unless something happens and she needs to be reframed - unless she no longer gives you pleasure. I’m working on some commitments right now, but am looking forward to starting your pattern…and then buying a historic reproduction.
Wonderful episode like the previous 3. Your stitched girl is just beautiful and the matting just perfect too. No surprise you received first place on it. Your knowledge is very much appreciated and very interesting. Thank you and hope you find a little time to stitch.
Thank you so much! Sometimes I need to take the dustrag and uncover that knowledge in my brain...it is so ingrained and I do it automatically, it is sometimes hard to point out and remember. Like doing the dishes, you just do them without thought.
Beautiful as always! That Elizabeth Hughes is on my wish list now! Eliza Jane Smyth is the one I can’t wait for! I check the website several times a day 😂
Thank you! Yes a huge shift for me too. I stitched but was working on my stash assuming everything was the same on the outside world - NOT 🤣 So many designers, stores & heros gone 😌 Can't say I'm sad to see the country geese go along with that pink/blue combo 🤣
Your episodes are terrific! Learning much! A quick hand dyed linen storage question? If your pieces are stored “open,” would it be safe to store them in a fabric bag … to keep them clean/dust free? Thank you. 🥰
I really like seeing all of these historical samplers. You make them come back to life with the love and care you give each one. Your work is beautiful. Thanks for a very enjoyable video. ❤
I agree with your stance on using thread conditioners on stitching. . I will not use them anytime for embroidery. I only use beeswax to stiffen thread for button sewing. I enjoy your flosstubes and your antique samplers.
Thanks for another fantastic video! I never heard of Mary Beale, but I remember going to Wyndhams back when I lived in NYC 20 years ago. Beautiful store. I also purchased MAF. So very elegant and I can't wait to stitch her up.
You are so welcome! Yes MAF is so elegant! Here is the link from the Wyndham store with their message: www.wyndhamneedleworks.com/ I think she will be on ebay until all her goods are sold. So sad to see all these fantastic stores dwindle away, but the again it is no surprise considering how long they have been in business and how much works it really is.
I finished watching and so enjoyed what you shared. I have some old needlework magazines and enjoy the artwork in them besides the patterns. Such good quality compared to ads today. Where has delight in design gone!? Your Shepherds Bush chubby girl is beautiful, just beautiful. I hope you keep the mats as a testament to that age of cross stitch, but understand if you change it. I did a large Paula Vaughn piece and had it matted and will just leave it. Thank you for the information on the French floss dyer. I would like to get all those beautiful reds, roses, and pinks to use in a Quaker sampler. Miss Treachers’ sampler is on my reader. I adore the soft almost monochromatic softness of the colors. Have a good week!
I am so glad you commented on stitching reproduction samplers. I found out while stitching your Ann McFarlan recently that I can’t follow the original exactly, especially the mistakes. It is my first reproduction sampler. I bought it because I love the unusual houses on the sides. I’ve only stitched two houses but I’ve fixed two mistakes. I am using it as a pattern but will be changing several things. I always change something when I stitch a pattern. Did you say where you are moving?
Wonderful! Always good to do your own thing. My hats off to anyone that would have been able to get a exact replica of some of Ann's Trees :) Yes we are moving south the end of the year.
Oh my WORD! I’m for sure buying the MAF and LA Treacher sampler!! I’m wondering if you would ever do a conversion to the Histoires de Lin thread for any of your samplers? I’m scouring the shop for samplers that call for that thread and I asked for the set for Christmas. Thank you for your Flosstube! XOXO Heidi
Hello again :) I have only 1 sampler so far in the making with the Histoires de Lin threads (they are so gorgeous!) Sophie will be away from July through September I think- they take long vacations in France 🤣 Even Au ver a Soi takes the entire month of August off...just shuts down the company. 🙄 This is not uncommon for Europe as a whole. I was always told that Europeans work to live but Americans live to work. I am finding that more and more true :) I am so happy you will get the whole set for Christmas!!! Woohoo!
Guten Tag!!!! I love your video and hearing you speak Herman is such a bonus for me. Both of my parents were born there and I have a lot of family still living there. I have watched all your episodes and love love your stitching! One quick question is that in this episode you showed a beautiful piece in your hoop that you designed “a home sweet home” sampler that you turned. Will this be available in you shop soon? I love the colors and want to buy the floss from Histoires de Lin. Also I will be going to Germany this summer for several weeks and was hoping you can give me a few ideas where to get some German cross stitch pattern and/or kits.
I am passing that one on to my stitcher as she is faster. As soon as she is done with Eliza ( she stitches soooo fast! OMG) So it should be coming out end of May if all goes to plan.
Birgit, another lovely video ..great answers to questions love your style like sitting across from you & visiting. When stitching with Ginnie Thompson Flower Thread on 32 count for Tindale Sister, which I’ve not used before do you stitch with one strand? Such a beautiful stitch…I wish you well with continuing packing 🤗♥️🪡
Another delightful and informative video. I will have to come back as I am only half way through watching, but chores call me. I do have a question though and hope to hear from you soon. I already purchased Jane Paton months ago I think. I see you have the kit now but I do not need the pattern. Can I purchase the wools and linen from you. I haven’t used wool in 45 years when crewel work was popular. I would like to try the wool. Will finish your video tonight!
Please do! Yes email me, I have another customer with the same thing. Email me at birgit@thewishingthorn.com. That way I can keep it neat and tidy in one place.
I so enjoy your videos. Such wonderful things to look at! BTW, I bought some Weeks variegated floss on spools recently. I didn’t like stitching with it since it twisted something awful. Good luck with your move. Where will your new home be?
Wonderful! Weeks is a twisty knotty bunch for sure. I need to pay attention with the new threads I got from France to see how they perform. Didn't even think to pay attention to that hahaha. Thank you for the reminder!!

Thank you! You too!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and stitching tips. You've become one of my must see Flosstubes. ❤ Roberta
Thank you Roberta!! Your FT is so wonderful I usually watch it on the weekends😍
Love the antique samplers. Those young ladies were amazing. Thank you for another great video!😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!!
