Dave Allen my mum's favourite comedian. I made her day when I took her to see him some time in early 90s just before he died. He was hilarious.

Dave delivers as always. I hate Supermarkets and Shopping Centers so much!! An absolute nightmare. Those "clever" monsters always design the layout of the shops to make you walk the longest possible route through the "maze" to get your the most important items everybody needs here in Finland, Coffee and Beer! But that`s nothing compared to the "culture/shopping" shock, when I walked the first time into an "American" Super Market and Mall!! It was in 1990 and we did not have so much foreign items or great variety/selection in different items in Finland that time. So I went to a "normal shopping" center just to buy some basic items like soft drinks, milk, cereal, bread....and of course "Peanut Butter & Jelly/Jam. And there were like 150 different cereal, 100 different breads, 200 soft drinks....I spend like 2 hours just walking up and down the endless aisles scratching my head! And another shock was, that there was an elderly gentleman "packing" my groceries for me and trying to carry them to my car!! I almost yelled NO! I am absolutely not going to let you do that for me! I am a young man, I will pack my own stuff and carry them!!! He was "shocked" I was shocked, everybody were "shocked"!! Thank God nobody called the Cops, cause that would have been my first and last shopping trip, laying down with 15 bullets in my back!! I gave him a $10 tip.

Thirded... LOL! I was in a Poundland in London, recently; had spent about half an hour (or more?), wandering around with a basket, adding all sorts of items. I had a 'rough' running total in my head and got to the queue for... 'self serve' check-out tills - NO ONE on an actual 'proper' face-to-face till - DUH! A lady was assisting people to use the 'self serve' tills and I said that I preferred to be served by a cashier. She could see I had a full basket (my running total being about £32.00!?). She said "I will help you here..." (pointing at a self-serve), I replied, "I'm happy to wait to get 'served', this person behind can go there...". She told me that no one could serve me, and she would show me... That comment was like a 'red rag' to a bull !!! I'm not proud of what happened (and would have liked my purchases), but I put the basket down on the floor (in the front of the queue), said "no thank you, I won't be back again" and left the shop. I have NOT regretted my actions and obviously can't return to that branch, but I refuse to take work away from 'people' and I 'do know' I'm getting 'old man syndrome'. 🤔 😄

i assume that old people count out the exact change when at the checkout for a number of reasons.
    1. They are trying to be helpful by making sure the operator doesnt run out of change
    2. They are lightening the load in their purse/wallet
    3. Some basic mental arithmetic to keep their mind active
Don't forget that we will be old one day (unless we kick the bucket a bit earlier than expected) and will likely do the same
As for buying unplanned goods in supermarkets - we have two very well established German owned supermarkets her, Aldi and Lidl, that apart from being more comfortably priced than their competitors they are also famous for the centre aisle. Now the centre aisle changes every few weeks, so you could go in to buy some bread one day and leave with a greenhouse, chain saw and set of embossed harry potter books whilst the following week you might end up with a 6 person tent, a hot tub, 3 apple trees and a bondage set for the personal dungeon that you order online from their website.
The trick is to arrive in the shop 10 mins before closing - just when the "this store will be closing shortly, please make your way to the till" is repeated every 30 seconds and you just rush through grabbing exactly what you need whilst muttering to yourself, "wish they'd turn that bloody message off. I'm not deaf. The sign outside says 8am till 10pm".
Then you get home, check the receipt and at the bottom 21:54 - 22nd Jan 2023 and you just think "b*stards. there was no need to rush"

Hi EB, everything he said was bloody true!!! Mind that was in the 90's. Now there are card payments and scan as you shop and don't need a checkout. A long time back there was a chain called Kwik Save and they didn't even price sticker items, they just had checkout assistants with very, very good memories for item prices 🥴 and they keyed the items in individually on the cash register. No bar code and readers back then 😎🤣 Cheers DougT

We have the self checkouts too. I prefer them when they are working well. In pretty much every supermarket here you have to do your own packing. I have never been asked to show a receipt after using a self checkout - you can't really just walkout with out using the checkout but you could steal some items fairly easily as the assistant is generally occupied with the various issues.

Dave Allen speaks for so many of us! Supermarkets, or at least the three brands that I use, have done away with the 'ticket' system at the deli counter because, to be honest, it was never really required. How often do you see a queue of people waiting at those counters? As for the 'nine items or less' checkouts, they too have gone the same way. I do like the self-service checkout though because they're so much quicker to get out of the store.

Dave had to continue doing standup for the money to help support him. He was still very good at it of course, but gone was the gently smiling, calm, warm man with the outlandishly silly sense of humour. I am totally against and I refuse to use de self-checkout lines, even if I have to stand in the regular line to pay. It´s not only taking people's jobs but they make you work for them. By the way, the prices aren't lower. As consumers your actions matter. The first time they implemented self-cashiers on IKEA where I live, I filed a complaint note and avoid getting there.

I prefer the selfcheck out machines but I always seem to go to the one that keeps telling me I've an "unexpected item in bagging area" even though I've scanned everything in my basket. Then I have to wait for the assistant to rectify it before it does it again as soon as they go away! ☹

Shopping for more than you went for happens only when you actually have more money than you need. 😆 I learned to appreciate that freedom of having enough money to afford buying something for a future need. 🙏

He was hilarious. What I liked about him was that although he was an Athiest he still said"May your God go with you" in a serious gentlemanly non rude way. I am a Churchgoer and I found this video HILARIOUS and Personally TRUE😅😅. Heck NOBODY'S perfect, no matter what your faith or non faith is

Totally agree with everything said. I can't believe that in these days of sometimes over zealous Health and Safety that they let people with absolutely no skill or training loose with something as dangerous as a shopping trolley.

Dave Allen was as big as The Paul hogan show in Australia in 1980 the first time I heard my father who rarely spoke laugh out loud both shows all 4 kids on ground in front of tv could talk in the add-breaks “it’s back on quiet” Dad smoked with a ashtray on a pole next to chair like Dave😂 4 men that changed Australia’s attitude are Dave Allen Paul Hogan Kevin Bloody Wilson & Rodney Rude! Ofcoarse many others from the goodies to Happy days but these 4 you could say in front of dad not mum so the made father son bonds better with “F**k C**T” 😂Mum only joins in after a shandy but she releases her built up laughter she’s repressed she can’t talk tears rolling down now we are all laughing at her😂 Jim Jeffries was the same age they shaped him as well we are in the AC/DC INXS age we saw them play in pubs every week with 30 people we can’t be offended but we punch on and insult each other with love ❤️

We barely have checkout staff these days, it's either scan yourself or scan and go where you take an infrared scanner round the store and scan as you go, eonce at the checkout no putting the items on a conveyer you just zap the scanner at the machine and it sends the list instantly to the till job done

Madness at self service checkouts, you technically paying the shop to do what used to be their employees job. Obviously there is other stuff that needs to be paid for down the supply chain etc but they just install them to cut staff down, then have 2 muppets stood next to them who never actually do what you need them to when the machines inevitably don't work properly or the damn ID check comes up.

He was so funny. My parents loved him. He used to be on TV all the time in the late 70s and early 80s in Ireland and a lot of the Irish establishment didn't know what to do with him, especially when he got on to the topic of religion. Lots of people would watch him and laugh along but then keep it quiet because he outraged the Catholic church so much!

A lot of our supermarkets now in the UK are getting rid of people behind tills. More self service. Alcohol purchases you have a red flashing beacon above your head! I think to self serve you should get a discount. You still have a few staffed counters but less and less.

Shops know how to use psychology and even company's have people who understand how the human mind works set out to make the product appealing and seductive .
Here in the UK and they might still do it, they send through the store the smell of fresh bread to get you in the mood for shopping.

Whilst the correct change thing can be annoying, I can tell you that, as someone who works retail, there is something even more annoying.
People who arrive at the till and then go through the whole trolley to see if they actually want it.
"If you didn't want it why did you put it in the f***ING trolley" I have to think whilst still smiling and saying "it's not a problem."
