comedians that i kind of grew up with, Billy Connolly, Dave Allen, Robin Williams (Mork and Mindy too haha) Jasper Carrot, The Two Ronnies, Hale and Pace , we have been truly blessed.
I was in my early teens when I saw Dave Allen for the first time and I have always been grateful to Swedish nation television service who bought many very good BBC productions in the 1970-80 when we only had two channels to watch. Dave Allen is still the reigning champion when it comes to comedy, for me.
In the 70s Dave spent a few years in Australia doing the “Dave Allen Show”, my dad (RIP) loved it so we all got to watch it. I was only a kid, now I start to understand and appreciate the comedy of Dave Allen… 🤣😂
As a boy I used to stay up to watch Dave Allen with my nan, it was the highlight of my week. Always went to bed replaying Dave's jokes and punchlines in my head. This is one of those routines I watched back then. Cheers for the reaction. Also enjoyed your story about comedy influences you have. One of mine is the great Bill Hicks.

Dave Allen was a genuine genius of exposition snd narrative. It's such a shame he was very "anti-repeats" which he regarded as lazy, which means his material is much less known and appreciated than it might otherwise be. He refused to allow re-runs of his shows for the majority of his life.
Dave Allen has always been a favourite of mine, he had a tonight Show here in Australia in the 70's- 80's. Two Ronnies is just fantastic, you can never get too much of it! Awesome re-watching all these things with you!
Take a look at Ken Dodd, was a lovely man and brilliant comedian I am 65 and used to watch him with my son from when he was 5 years old, I have seen my son fall off the settee laughing, Seen him no end of times live, was always a standing joke about the length of his shows, he has done 4-5 hour shows, his audience never minded

Dave Allen was a dream. A good mate of mine down the pub was his double sitting there watching the punters swing & stagger the bar, we'd makeup stories on each & every soul navigating the bar. Pure class. RIP Dave Allen. Legend.
I was lucky enough to see dave live i London sometime in the very early 1990s. it was my mum's birthday present from me. we laughed so hard 🤣😂 I miss him. Shame bbc never repeats his shows.
I think Billy Connolly got better as he got older. I preferred Dave Allen's older routines but like you, those 2 are my favourite comedians also. I read Dave Allen's biography once and it had the different versions of his stories about his missing finger. I don't think the real reason is known! I struggle with American comics tbh, I find it to rely on silliness or slapstick. I do like some sitcoms though like My Name is Earl or Fresh Prince. Recently I watched the Marx Brothers and absolutely loved that. I think British comedy is different in that it is relatable, for example a lot of sitcoms are based on different industries. But I think there's a lot of diversity, too and is often surreal. but even in England I think there's a big difference between Northern comics who come from working man's clubs for instance, university graduate comics and perhaps those who came from army entertainment backgrounds like Spike Milligan for example. Like Ken Dodd said, you can tell a joke in Liverpool but they won't laugh in London... Because they can't hear it!
On a separate note, I've been revisiting the documentaries about Yorkshire farmer Hannah Hauxwell, A Winter too Many for example which is about the harsh reality of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. You might be interested in these if you like Fred Dibnah for example. Although living in isolation, she appears more socially aware than most people. You can see this in the follow up episodes where she visits London and the USA for the first time. This is based in the Yorkshire Dales and James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small is based nearby. Apparently those books and TV shows are hugely popular in America so perhaps you already know it?
I did a course on air crashes caused by bird strikes and precautions against this a few years ago. It was filled with case studies and it was amazing how many big crashes there had been that i'd never heard about on the news

You have a great appreciation of British comedy and, while we never saw much stand-up from the USA in the 60's and 70's , that all changed with the invention of video! In the 80's, I finally got to see some of the outstanding and outspoken comedians like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Robin Williams and Bill Hicks performing their stand-up. All sadly missed but never forgotten.

The cabin of a plane is pressurised using a bleed system through the engines, where some of the air flowing through the turbines is diverted into the aircraft. It used to be that on planes with 2 engines, only one engine would pressurise the cabin, however after an incident of single engine failure (which a plane is still perfectly able to fly) both engines now fulfil this role. I would hazard a guess that complete failure of all engines would be the most likely cause of cabin depressurisation, however even though cases of single engine failure are "common" (in quotes because even that is extremely rare), cases of all engines failing compared to the number of flights performed over a decade, say, are compoundingly smaller still.

Apparently one of the terrible things about a water landing is that people inflate their jackets before leaving the plane and they get trapped as a result. This happened on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, the plane ditched successfully but people inflated their jackets while inside and floated to the top of the cabin as the plane filled with water.
Loved watching it with you , dont ever lose that laugh. I wonder how much of Dave would not be allowed today, like the religious stuff? he was the best.
I don't know if you've noticed yet, but he is missing half a finger, through an accident when he was young. Occasionally he did tricks/jokes involving said finger. But you should watch him when he was young ie 60s 70s smart clothes smart hair Irish twinkle in his eye - and the sketches in between the stand-up = amazing. 😋

Funnily enough, my Irish gran ( one generation behind Dave ) got really beaten on the hands by the normal teachers, but when she went to RC school she was amazed and relieved how kind they were but firm, and never resorted to those tactics. This was in Cork. I myself had lots of nuns around me when I was a kid and a teenager, and they were great. I know that there has been a lot of hardships and abuses with priests and nuns, but there are amazing ones too. And I don't want to tar them all with the same brush, because there are so many good ones too. And I am sorry for all those people who suffered, including Dave Allen. But people is people. There are good'uns and bad'uns in all walks of society, religions, and establishment as well as on the streets all around us. It must remain important to lay blame at the feet of the guilty, not the innocent. ☺

I loved Dave Allen, and he was a Mebourne Australia Bloke for a while back when I was a boy, watching his shows on HSV-7. I also knew Dr. Dave Warren, inventor of the flight recorder. He even hit on my girlfriend on a Morris Minor Car Club event back in 1987, as he was wont to do with girls in their 20's coming to events for the club he founded. It's interesting to note that the Black Box flight recorder, the prototype of which he would show nearly everyone he met, and spawned the whole expression "black box" for a mysterious sealed device, was painted red.

There's an Irish connection. Billy Connolly had an Irish grandfather, Spike Milligan had an Irish father, Dave Allen was Irish and both of Frankie Boyle's parents are native Irish speakers from Donegal
Yes but they all choose too live the majority of their lives, work, bring up their family all of their time in England mostly in the Home Counties or London.

My late father use to find this guy hilarious. Of course being a kid at the time I didn't get to stay up late to watch it, I didn't know it was Dave Allen and it wasn't until youtube came along that I stumbled across some of his work I recognised his voice straight away. When this came out ( and this is some of his later stuff) it was very controversial at the time because he took no prisoners.
We had a Richard Pryor live show on tape in the early 80's and boy did it get passed around the family house holds. If any of us lads randomly say a line from the show, one of the other lads will say the accompanying line. Nearly 40 years later. Oh Pryor, you are just bonkers. Lol.
I watched one of Pryor's show at a cinema back in the eighties. It was brilliant, the whole audience were laughing so much, and for me, at times, it became unpleasant because it began to hurt from the onslaught of jokes. He was a one off genius.
Fun fact, way back in the early years of flying there was a survey that asked passengers about life jackets. An overwhelming number of passengers said they wouldn't fly if there wasn't a life jacket for them on board. And yet, in the whole history of commercial flight, not one person's life has ever been saved because of an on board life jacket.
Black boxes are usually made from Titanium, Titanium is highly resistant to chemicals and has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal. (SR71 Blackbird was over 90% Titanium) Back in the day it was difficult to keep the Blackbird maintained properly due to it being made from titanium and the metals expanding/shrinking causing leaks everywhere when (i think) parked up. Maybe these days we could solve that but I guess thats why we dont make passenger planes out of it.

The brace is because thru your spine you can take ... 20 ish G but upright your neck can only take about 5 G before 💀💀 13:20 actually the wings help to float an AC for quite a while even in the sea. ( but tbh no AC has ever managed to land in the ocean in 1 piece. The closest was the Ethiopian Airlines and he flipped.) The black box in an AC size would be too heavy to take off !!! - Im an airline pilot.

He was actually banned by RTE the national broadcaster in Ireland but there loss. He was and still is very funny.

I always asked to sit near rear of the plane, mainly ‘cause you never hear of planes REVERSING INTO MOUNTAINS or the SEA !

My late father use to find this guy hilarious. Of course being a kid at the time I didn't get to stay up late to watch it, I didn't know it was Dave Allen and it wasn't until youtube came along that I stumbled across some of his work I recognised his voice straight away. When this came out ( and this is some of his later stuff) it was very controversial at the time because he took no prisoners.

These were prime time when the UK had just 3 channels
We had a Richard Pryor live show on tape in the early 80's and boy did it get passed around the family house holds. If any of us lads randomly say a line from the show, one of the other lads will say the accompanying line. Nearly 40 years later. Oh Pryor, you are just bonkers. Lol.
I watched one of Pryor's show at a cinema back in the eighties.
It was brilliant, the whole audience were laughing so much, and for me, at times, it became unpleasant because it began to hurt from the onslaught of jokes.
He was a one off genius.

Fun fact, way back in the early years of flying there was a survey that asked passengers about life jackets. An overwhelming number of passengers said they wouldn't fly if there wasn't a life jacket for them on board. And yet, in the whole history of commercial flight, not one person's life has ever been saved because of an on board life jacket.
Black boxes are usually made from Titanium, Titanium is highly resistant to chemicals and has the highest strength to weight ratio of any metal. (SR71 Blackbird was over 90% Titanium) Back in the day it was difficult to keep the Blackbird maintained properly due to it being made from titanium and the metals expanding/shrinking causing leaks everywhere when (i think) parked up. Maybe these days we could solve that but I guess thats why we dont make passenger planes out of it.

Going on coach outing with our parish community , an Irish lady gave the coach driver a Dave Allen's tape ,you want to hear their cackles at his dirty jokes , church goers hahaha .

( but tbh no AC has ever managed to land in the ocean in 1 piece. The closest was the Ethiopian Airlines and he flipped.)
