Still in shock that the entire executive team turned up to film this episode! Really enjoyed picking their brains for you. Let me know what you think of the interview below. Madison
Great interview, Rod comes across as a very experienced and smart bloke who understand trade offs, and is willing to make the right decisions, while also understanding the other options and alternatives. He didn't bag their opposition, but complimented them . This shows the character and integrity of the man, the way he conducts himself and the business that he runs. I wonder if they have any jobs going? Because he'd be a great mentor to learn from; - business, probably not golf. 😛
Great interview. Inspirational guy. However....personally I think the 'Briscoe-isation' of retail has ruined it. In both Rebel Sport and Briscoes service is shocking. We have become price focused, not skills focused. Try buying a Softball glove in NZ now, 2 options...Rebel or on-line! Whereas years ago there were so many Ma & Pa Sports Shops with genuine expertise. Bunnings, Briscoes, Rebel, Warehouse, Kmart, etc....have been a big part of ruining retail because they do not give a reason to go other than price, so online becomes an easier option.
Quality product/long term durability/great design/form and function = "Value" and value is the always a winner in lean times because thats what we all are after.
Despite interest rates on houses they still are spending on high quality. It was interesting shrug of the relative house prices when discussing interest rates... a lot of people from that generation still do that, but they are coming around.
Easy to shrug off when their mortgages are paid off. Probably helps that a good portion of the people loyal to his brand are also boomers with no mortgage.
Briscoes sells premium goods at sometimes very good prices when on sale. I see warehouse sitting more along side kmart in the value for money everyday average/ cheap products. But kmart does a much better job than the warehouse. Kmart is more on trend, its fresh whereas warehose could be described as stale. They've also made a big mistake with the website mixing in store products with products only available online. I could go on. Sad days for the red shed. Looks like its shaping up to be another pumpkin patch.
And all the tax cut money will fuel his share price in a few months. It's as ubiquitous a brand that you can get. Let's all wait for the Sept figures and inflation. Any artificial stimulus to an economy as the tax cuts will be, place inflationary pressures.
Why are all these NZ CEOs so incredibly old? Why haven't they taken the dosh and retired? If you have the money, as CEOs by definition must have, is there not a better country to retire in than NZ?
I thought the reason they are still operating is because of the fake specials they ofer every year that gets people running in the door on generally overpriced stuff, and public placement. Honestly the Egyptian cotton sheets ai got there were so crap compared to even just good quality cotton. He wins because he’s a bullshitter. I would love to see his actual books, cause this is nothing but an ad opportunity tor him

Your awesome Madison. Awesome interview. Great content. Look forward to more episodes.
So much nuggets from Rod, he seems very genuine person.
Thank you. I really enjoyed this interview. Not often you get to see the driver behind the brand. Fascinating insight.

I don’t like the the Warehouse level cheap low quality products. This is why they couldn’t succeed in Australia.
Excellent interview thanks

I think KMart quality is superior
Prevnting shoplifting aids success
He guy is seriously no one to celebrate…, other than his ability to take advantage of employees
Never buy anything from Briscoes unless it's on sale as it's to expensive.
I think they sell rubbish and way to expensive Rebel Sports is a little bit better

His books are publicly available - do yourself a favour and take a look
