    You’re a f*cking genius Dan. This is an incredible design. Kudos man, well done. For those wondering, the “best” 1p fully freestanding tent - the Nemo Dragonfly Osmo - comparing packed weights (with stakes, bags, etc.) this is about 5.5oz lighter, and looks loads roomier, more headroom (2”), more stormworthy, and is fly first pitch. And this is $60 less. I don’t even need this tent, I do pretty well the X-Mid even in rocky/beachy conditions, but I might just have to pick one for the bougie solo treks. Thanks for being a true innovator in a world where “innovation” amounts to using thinner fabrics to cut weight on basic designs. 👏🏻👏🏻

    The specs at that price point relative to the competitors is super impressive, same goes for the other X-Mids. Would love to eventually see a bikepacking pole option eventually. Although my X-Mid started as a backpacking tent, motorcycle camping has taken over my free time. But the tent just came out and I'm sure those things will come with time. I'll likely sell my X-Mid 2p in favor of one of these when the time comes. Super impressive stuff.

    This tent is perfect for hiking guides and outdoor instructors.
    Having a one person tent that has a little bit more space, can be set up from the outside because you will hike in the rain with clients and have trekking pole supports when using it in exposed windy/winter conditions along with the door not dripping down on the inside of the tent when opened.

    Interesting design, and I really do appreciate the fly first/outer+inner pitch as they are not very common in North America (they are however very common in the EU). I also noticed the center low peg loops, which are nice for pulling the outer further out and up for more airflow.
    Some criticisms: While your bottle test does give a vague idea as to how it would handle snow loading (and it is kind of unfair using trekking poles in that test as you are comparing to a tent that does not have them), it really does not give any indication as to how it would handle wind loading as that force pushes the tent over and down flattening the facing side and breaking the back poles. A real test would be how it handles wind load (and it's failure point) using a wind machine with and without the trekking poles. Crossing twin poles rather than Y joints would also make the tent even stronger for a slight increase in weight (that and single poles are so much easier to work with and less likely to break than Y joints).
    Otherwise looks like a good lightweight tent, though for me I have more interest in the 2p version for a (I presume) second door, second vestibule, and increased through ventilation.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The bottle test is without the trekking pole supports, so it is a fair test. The X-Dome can do triple without the pole supports. But yes I agree with you that it is only one type of load and other circumstances can be different. The corner guylines help a lot and trekking pole help a lot if you are in severe winds.
      With the poleset design, we upsize the spine portion that is just one arch, so it uses larger tubing to achieve similar strength as dual arch but at a lower weight.
      Cheers,
      Dan

    After a few seasons of using trekking pole tents, what I kind of miss is having a trekking pole handy after my tent is set up, I often find myself in need of one to hike down a slope to get water or take an evening stroll. It doesn’t sound like a big deal but the older I get the more dependent upon the poles (or one pole, anyway) I tend to be. I really like the design and space.

    Dan, one thing I think would be a neat addition to this tent would be to include a polyester vestibule storage pocket, not unlike the Nemo Dagger OSMO's "landing zone". I currently use the Dagger, and the vestibule pocket is my favorite part of it. Vestibules on their own are amazing, but water can still trickle underneath and soak any gear you might have. Having that pocket has allowed me to keep my extra gear out of my inner tent even in the worst storms without having to worry about water.
    Having an ounce or two of extra fabric, with such an improvement to protecting your gear, is 100% worth it.

    This looks phenomenal with your usual excellent level of details the big tent makers don’t think of. I love my X-Mid 2 but setup can definitely be more work on rock slabs in the Southwest and gravel pits in the far north so I’ve been considering adding a small freestanding tent back to my lineup. This will be perfect for me and the extra space for my dog means I don’t need to get a 2p! It will be too late for my fall Southwest camping trips but can’t wait to put it to use this spring packrafting, backpacking, and bikepacking.

    Just ordered - I have a BA Copper Spur UL2 that I love, but this tent seems to have everything I want for a LASH of the AT next spring: freestanding, double wall, less weight, roomy vestibule for gear, smaller footprint than my 2-man, and silpoly for those rainy weeks on trail. I also like its muted color for stealth camping. Cannot wait to get it!

    Great work one again, I'm still happy with my X-Mid 1 so I can't really justify upgrading. I do like the option of more inner space for the given footprint size (I never have enough gear that I really need two huge vestibules). Although I am curious if the "1" version would have a smaller overall footprint or if it would just bring back the second vestibule. I'd probably be willing to buy a second tent if it had a smaller overall footprint for tight spaces, something like the Nemo Hornet.

    Hi Dan! Great tent. The only thing overlooked in this video is a comparison shot when packed between the X-Mid and this tent. Anyone mulling these two options might be interested to see how they compare in size and weight as that's the determining factor to getting the Dome tent over the trekking pole tent.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that would be good to show. The X-Mid packs longer (about 17-18" vs 12") because of the poles, but is a bit slimmer.

      @@LeavenotraceexpeditionsMost of the insulation comes from your sleep system anyways. The most important thing that distinguishes a 4 season tent from a 3 season tent is the sturdiness against rough weather and the ability to shed snow. Tbh, if you really want warmth from the tent, get some Mylar sheets and use those to insulate the tent. They work wonders.

      @@smellybearc7411 “The most *important* thing that distinguishes a 4 season tent from a 3 season tent is the sturdiness against rough weather and the ability to shed snow”
      That’s only partly true, the main distinguishing features of a 4 season tent are a fly that reaches all the way to the ground and a solid inner. Which this tent has neither. While your insulating ground & top layers will do an adequate job at mitigating heat loss through convection; cold drafts in extreme low temperatures can quickly tank your body temperature, there’s no way I’d take this tent into extreme low temps, the wind would cut right through it. It’s a solid tent don’t get me wrong but it would definitely rest in the 3+ season category. Look to the likes of the Hilleberg Suolo if you want to see what a true 4 season tent looks like.

    Dan, I've been critical of some features of some of your other products. You took notice and defended your products.
    This time, I believe you hit it out of the park. This is an ingenious design. It is just what the market needed for solo hikers. Especially when you think of all the areas that have tent platforms but not many ground sites, such as you find in Northern New England.
    I love the floor design. I'm blown away by the structural integrity. And considering all the features it has and all the benefits, I am amazed at the weight.
    I was planning to get a Tarptent Double Rainbow in either the Ultra or DCF to use for solo trips at places like The White Mountains, where you are constantly camping on platforms. But I like this design better.

    • @justinw1765
