This video is priceless. Anyone who sees it for the first time needs to watch their latest video's and compare the editing and narration to this one and see just how far the quality has come. Amazing.
Thanks so much Bill! When we look back and watch this now we cringe! Haha! But it is real, and a great example of how hard work and dedication can lead to improvement in skills :-)
I just found you folks about 6 months ago around ep 60 while being pent up in our Toronto condo. Looking forward to starting on ep 1 and catching up. Be safe and enjoy😀
Awesome! Hi 👋 George! We really love the 46! Maybe Sweet Ruca will meet Windrush some day if we ever make it back to the Great Lakes! :-) What is your favorite feature of your J?
Welcome aboard Michael! We know Middletown, the West Marine there was like our second home for a few months :-) Thanks for the compliment, we feel really lucky to have this beautiful J. Cheers!!
It looks like you didn't get a survey. Your boat certainly wasn't in show room condition without a detached mast and with all that stuff piled up everywhere inside. You must have gotten a pretty good deal because of all that. I'm thinking of getting a mono hull to sail across the Pacific to the Philippians so that I have a place to live why my Cyber 48 is being built. I'm not sure what type of boat would be best for me but it certainly needs to be cheep so that I don't loose money when I sell it about three years latter. Like you two, I grew up racing small boats and then got into racing catamarans but have never used electronic navigation equipment before. I'm thinking that sailing across the Pacific will teach me all of that and give me the motivation to get my boat built faster so that I can continue to cruise. What an awesome lifestyle!
Really enjoyed the video Kate and Curtis. Haley helped me unwrap our new to us boat and it was like Christmas morning. Great fun!! Can’t wait to watch all your posts.
I have been watching you guys for a while and had to go back and see the first Video of the sweet ruca crew. you have come a long way but it was nice to see how it started.
Enjoy the journey, we have learned a lot along the way. We wish we could go back and re-edit the old ones now that we know a little more about videography. Cheers!
I just went to another video and saw the main sail. You have a J46. I've sailed on a J30 and J35 in Seward, Alaska. Great boats made by Tillotson Pearson, Bristol, RI. They make other boats as well; good company. I've been there!
04/24 first time i have seen this. You bought a wreck but made a real and nice boat out of it. Kate didnt look to excited then. Oh, i saw this 7 months ago. Made no impression then. How can people let a nice boat become a wreck in no time baffles me. Had a boat, got too old. Moved on.
Thanks! Stay warm and safe! We will check out your channel and sailing in Ireland as soon as we have a bit more bandwidth! Cheers from on anchor in the USVI.

Super cool! You will get to see the evolution of the boat, us, and a big learning curve in filming, cameras, editing, and sound :-) It is sure fun to look back on the past eposodes.
Great video guys that is a great loon into what you guys have accomplished. I can’t believe you packed literally hundreds of hours of work and toil into such a short video!
Been watching your videos and finally watched your boat purchase video. Spent time in that area of RI, stationed at Quanset Pt when I was in the Navy. Have gotten to sail Blue Jay and on my parent Bristel 34. Wish I could get out and sail more. Love watching your vlog, please keep it up.
Congrats for boat! Actualy I catch you for the first time at Cape Horn and high rated your video. This one has a few beginer staf... To loud music... The sailors don't like bih noise. Noise is for power boaters. Please, when you speak to people don't were this "teenager" blue miror glaces, we prefer to see your eyes. But you already correct all that beginers stuf... So don"t take me by mistake, because in C. H. episode, you guys, made very good videos, among the bests👍 I vish fair winds, Dario, Croatia
Hi Dario, yes of course. We had to learn a lot along the way about making videos. Unlike many others, we are sailors who decided to make some videos, not videographers who went sailing ;-) We think the learning curve is part of the story. Cheers!
Oh man. My ocd levels went through the roof looking at that boat shrink wrapped. I’m currently in the market for a cruiser and….ugh….anyway. Awesome boat. I know she’s fast as hell.
@@SailingSweetRuca mostly lake sailing but I’ve sailed once with friend and father in the Ensenada race. It starts it San Francisco and sails to Ensenada. Fun race all down wind but going back is all tacking. It was many years ago 1971. Grew up in the Persian golf (Arabian Sea) sailed a bit. Always dreamed of a round the world trip but not in the cards in this life time. So through your eyes. 🙏🏼😎✌🏼
We bet you will like Ep. 15 ;-) We stop in for an insurance survey at one of our favorite places on the east coast. th-cam.com/video/lVBWQnQ0WdQ/w-d-xo.html
Welcome! Yes we did everything possible to try and save the existing AGMs. Even if we could have saved them they were fairly old and would be approaching EOL during our cruise. So far so good.
Ah yes. :-) We knew zero about videos when we made the first few. We have learned a lot about video and audio since then. Someday we will go back and re-make episode 1.
I just discovered you guys and am watching from Episode #1. Questions: Did you not have at least a survey of the boat before buying it and, if so, how did you establish if the engine functioned properly? Also, what boatyard were you in that let you do your own work? Thank you for your responses.
Hi Ron. Great questions. We did not do buyers survey, as Curtis is experienced regarding the industry and boats/rigging/engines, etc. We were satisfied with the information we had and knew the risks. Although this was helpful for us to close on a deal quickly, we would not recommend someone inexperienced do that. We don’t care to comment on specific boatyard policies as that is really up to each boatyard and things can change. We’d suggest calling on them individually and reviewing the yards contract and discussing questions with them. We were at Jamestown Boatyard. We would have never known it existed as it’s pretty far off the beaten path, but it is now a special place in our hearts. The team a JBY was great, we loved the guys there. They were honest, knew their stuff, and treated us well when we were there.
I still think it is very unusual that on buy a boat that must have been $200K+ without a survey, but as the saying goes, from the play with the same name, "All's well that ends well". As the the Jamestown Boat Yard, it is famous in the Northeast.
We don’t blame you for thinking it’s unusual, it is. Unusual is nothing new to us. Wait until you watch some of the other episodes and find out where we plan on sailing, you will really think we are crazy 😜
Nice video, bit of a suggestion: when you have mono sound (seems from phone video or gopro), just duplicate it to the right audio channel as well, it's a bit disconcerting when the sound goes from both ears to just the left side when you're on headphones, made me think they broke again :D
Wow, we would have never thought of that!! Awesome pro tip! Thank you!!! We will do some googling and explore that in Davinci Resolve for the next videos.
@@SailingSweetRuca use the ... uh..forgot the tool, been a while since I used Resolve - but you can basically just go into Fairlight panel, select/copy the audio and slap it in the 2nd channel - although I think you can do it from the editing panel as well, like I said, last time I touched Resolve was at version 14 or something :D
Not really, we knew what we were getting into. Buying a boat that is not "staged" can save a good deal of money, IF one knows what they are doing. It can be a disaster for those less experienced hoping for a "deal."
