  • The Rust in Rats Nest has been neglected long enough!! In this video we replace the steering pitman arm, add some homemade frame stiffening, change out the track bar bracket to a better one from Iron Rock Off Road and we cut into the rust with a new favorite tool from Eastwood( The Eastwood SCT Contour Tool). We also have a little surprise for you as we Don't use Robby Layton Nation to do our body work, hahaha but we do ask for his expertise for the 2 door Jeep Cherokee. We hope you all have a great day and thank you for following in our adventures.

    I actually like doing rust repair. It can be overwhelming, but its one of those jobs where you know it WILL kill your vehicle, so when you fix it right, it feels like you really did something to make the vehicle better. I get a lot of satisfaction out of doing rust repair.

    When installing a new pitman arm, also check to make sure that the nut doesn't bottom out before the arm is fully seated on the taper of the steering box shaft. Otherwise, the nut might feel tight, but the pitman arm might still be loose on the shaft. :)

      Ran into this a few weeks ago, nut was super tight but not contacting the arm TONS OF SLACK IN THE STEERING, 1 washer fixed everything.

    Can't go wrong with Eastwood! I got a can of the brush on seam sealer sitting shelf.

    As a former NY resident, rust is no bid deal as long as you aren’t making a show car out of it. A rotary broach for drilling spot welds, clecos or self tapping screws helps a lot too. When doing the floor to wheel tub, fold a piece of 20 ga sheet metal into an angle. About 10” long is easy to work. Eastwood makes a shrinker/stretcher, that allows you to form the angle to fit around the tub. Cleco the angle to the floor and tub, do your tack welds 1-2” apart to keep the metal from metal from warping too bad. It’s really not too bad. Not sure where you are in SD, but I live in Gilllette Wy now. You’re more than welcome to,borrow the tools if you’d like. I’d come out, but just had a hip replaced 2 weeks ago.

    I have broken almost every tool possible to remove the pittman arm. The one that worked - is a simple bearing puller. Install it, tighten it solid and than install a pulley puller over the bolts that hold two half togather. Works flawlesly, very solid and symetrical load on the puller.

    Couple of years ago I rebuilt a enclosed 10x5x5 trailer to sell, and those surfaces were flat. Loads of fun using a plasma cutter for the first time, but recorking with a non-electric cork gun is a mugs game. Felt like I had arthritis but with blisters. High-lift jacks can be scary. 2006 changing all my 4 Runners tires, got to the last one lowering the jack and the handle came up so fast under my jaw, it knocked me out. Trip to the dentist, ex-rayed and only had 1 split tooth and a bruised jaw. But he also fixed the 'rust" holes in my teeth. lol

    Id just like to say i recommend using a 33mm on the pitman arm as that’s what size it is. I stripped mine using a 1 5/16 socket. Ended up having cut the nut off and wait a week for a new nut to ship.

    I didn't realize IRO made that bracket. I need to get that. I wanted to stretch my ZJ an inch or so but when I did my coil was hitting the bracket when the suspension cycles so moved it back a bit. Still hits a bit on big bumps. I may need to grab one of those.

  • @forreststrong797
    @forreststrong797 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use a heavy duty wire wheel on an angle grinder and a pointy wire doohicky on a big die grinder and chisels and picks to remove the oem seam sealer. I also use a Makita electric sheet metal nibbler to help cut out stuff and of course cutting disc's. I've done quite a few cherokee floors. I like to remove all of the seam sealer from the entire car which requires a full tear down but I've also just done all the interior seam sealer. The oem seam sealer on cherokees seams to hold moisture or something because even on seemingly rust free cherokees I find rust under the seam sealer. I go back with 3m 2 part seam sealer, I like the controlled flow and the heavy body. Then I usually build my own rear repair panels and for the front I use the key parts brand floor pans for the front they are the black color ones. I stay away from the silver floor pans they are cheaper but don't fit as well. I also cut and redo all the spot welds which takes time. If I have the car stripped down I like to go around and stitch weld the chassis too inside and out then install frame stiffeners but it takes me months to complete a rust repair and stitch weld and install stiffeners then redo all the seam sealer on the whole body.
    If you made it this far through my super long comment I'd also suggest the Ironman4x4fab leaf spring boxes to replace the forward spring mounts if your keeping rear leafs and your boxes are trashed.

    I remember the stock jack that came with my dads Dodge station wagon. It was very much like a high lift jack. There were notches in the bumper that the jack would fit into. Perhaps I was simply lucky, but we never had any issues with the jack when changing flat tires whether it was on pavement or dirt roads. Looking forward to your next video and the progress you make.

    I feel your pain. Going to do a similar job on my Foxbody. The rear of the ZJ has holes too, but it's a wood toy.

    I've just about had those jacks kill me! We used them in the Masonry business to lift scaffolding that sunk. I also used them off road. I saw on one of Matts videos and he has an ARB hydraulic high lift. I wanted one immediately till I saw they were almost $900!

    Unibody is so called because of the front and rear subframes with NO frame rails connecting them. The ZJ/WJ/XJ etc are Uni-frame designs. They don't use subframes as they have frame rails going the full length of the body. If you want to see a true unibody then look at any of the fox bodies, f-bodies, etc. You'll see the difference and you'll see why there are sub frame connectors to help stiffen up those chassis. Other than that nit pick great video.

    Try using dry ice for the seam sealer stuff, I see the drag guys use it often for removing it
