Back in the day, early 1960s, we used hydrochloric acid "borrowed" from chemistry class. A dash of manganese dioxide, a catalyst, sped up the action. It's possible to buy and use muriatic acid, which is dilute hydrochloric, but caution is advised, as it can cause severe skin burns and the fumes can damage the lungs. Nic-a-date or vinegar is a safer altenative.
I find when i use nic a date i put a drop in center of coins both back and f3ont , then set on paper towel after you rinse with distilled water dry and then buy coconut oil/lard rub them lightly and then dry wrll with soft cloth put in a flip and they will naturally tone. But i do the entire co8n and it works well. Tey it . I use white distilled vinegar and baking soda which only 5ake 2vto 3 m8ns max and you get my pennies clean up if ive gotten them while metal detecting. Try the vinegar and backing soda the drop in coins wait 1 min pull it out rinse then dry add coconut oil and dry well. Soft cloths. Then flip um and watch they qill tone nicely.
Couldn’t you mix up the solution and just add a little drop to the date area like they do with the Nic-a- date stuff? That way the whole surface of the coin won’t get deteriorated.
In canada I can't get nic a date cuz it's considered "dangerous" material so i cant bring it across the border nor sold in market. good alternative way!

A altered coins a altered coin the moment you use a acid on it. It don't matter how long it's in there it's altered
