      One reason being the presence of vocalists. They typically clash with most singers vocal ranges and can make it difficult to get that particular Tom sound to sit in a mix well at least in my experience. Not a lot of drummers want that timbre from thier toms. I’d describe them as “pangy” and timbale like, but slightly less resonance 😂 most of us want a thunderous “boom” that a frame and a single piece of Mylar simply cannot produce. However, would be a great candidate for a triggered hybrid setup

    • @kevinotoole9576
      @kevinotoole9576 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The reason is probably that they can bust under the pressure sometimes, ruining the black metal part, forcing you to replace. That's what happened to 2 out of the 3 of the ones I had.

      I want to get these for performing one of my bands songs live it's an 80s ballad. Studio version doesn't have much fills but I add a lot of big fills live it sounds so good in the song. These would be great to add to my kit and go down all my toms. Check out the song it's called "The Rain" by "stankenstein" and also give the heros odyssey a listen it's a 3 part ballad.

      @@Randy_Servello Honestly, for a cover band playing clubs and so on, I don't think it really matters! Especially if you tune them well, PLAY THEM WELL, and have a good sound guy who can mix everything properly. By this, I mean, the average person in the audience, on the dance floor, etc., drinking their beer or their wine, or whatever, looking for the love of their life, or just for the night, probably isn't going to notice or care, as long as the beat is there, and rhythm is workin'. This is also my philosophy regarding brand names and market levels for drums, cymbals, etc. Now, I get wanting to sound as good as possible, and enjoying playing on quality kit, but, there's a saying about knowing your audience...!

  • @roadboat9216
    @roadboat9216 2 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    One of the best benefits to these is that they can be tuned to specific musical interludes or to fit primary chord structures. Even used as a make do for timpani effects. This just adds to the versatility of the drum kit.

    Hello sir Look how i play on this instrument demonstration

  • @TonyVazquez8265
    @TonyVazquez8265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I recently switched from acoustic toms to large rotos: 10", 14", and a 16" roto that I use as a floor tom. I use Evans Hydraulic red batter heads on my rotos. My kick drum is a 16" converted floor tom from a Tama Rockstar DX kit.
    Now I'm starting to get used to them, but I still need to tune my roto-toms so they will project in my band's rehearsal space.
    Someone told me I should mic my roto-toms; but I will do that for live shows and studio recordings. I don't really need to mic my roto-toms during band rehearsal unless my bandmates ask me to do so.
    Nonetheless, having a roto-tom kit is fun to play. I'll still keep my acoustic toms so that I can switch back to them once in a while.

      I'm looking into a similar setup, really just looking to minimize the size of the gear I need to bring to gigs. A 16" kick, snare, a couple of rotos, cymbal bag, hardware bag and throne should be able to fit in an Uber. Are you still loving your setup? Anything you would change?

      steveweissmusic.com sells their own house brand rototom up to 16"! The 12-16"s have all been out of stock for a few months but I'm assuming they'll have more eventually.
      These are harder to come by, but you can occasionally find vintage 18" rotos on Ebay and Reverb. I snagged one this past summer to convert into a bass drum of sorts, now I just need the rest haha.

    Great video! The reverb was a little too prominent. In my opinion anyway. I would dial it back another 20 to 25%. If you're using a DAW, I would recommend sending each mic to an auxiliary channel. That way you can control your reverb amount a little easier.
    This is a great video nonetheless. Thank you for posting it.
