- A week and a half late is better than never.
My first major video project using professional editing tools.
In this video I construct a MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 VLB based 486 system predominately out of mainstream parts that would have been available in 1994 including the AMD am486DX2-80 80MHz processor.
Clips used:
The Computer Chronicles
Kid's Guide To The Internet
Intel 486 DX2 advertisement
LGR - Building a 486 DOS PC! The LGR Woodgrain 486
Holy crap, it's my first PC, including the very case and drive layout.
Thank you for that Video. it brings back some Memories.
1995 i get from my Uncle an 486 Board with exact the same BIOS, VLB Video Card, and I/O Controller. 486 DX2 66, 16 MB RAM, 450 MB HDD And a Double Speed CD Drive.
Very nicely done video! Impressive!! Thanks for sharing your buildoff.
Also, that Ontrack trick was really cool.. never knew about that!
Excellent video. I had no idea this was a startup channel the quality was so high. Keep at it and eventually you will get your viewership up.
nice video, nice build. good old zif, a word that id forgotten.
Yay , a new channel to follow, good luck with it
The algorithm just fed me your channel. Really nice video!
*Incredibly awesome! Please, do more videos!*
I owned the same one at that time.
Developing PowerBuilder and Clipper Apps using it was very Entertaining
Better late than never at all. Really enjoyed the video. Great 486 build. Look forward to part 2
Super video.
Nice content!
I really enjoyed the trip back in time so we can all remember how these things came to be
Sounds like you would have some pretty awesome retro lan parties!
Very good video, I became your subscriber! Keep up the good work. And make your videos longer, I only had one cup of tea. :)
All the best to you, comrade!
part 2 - waiting ! :)
Great video :) Looking forward to the next one.
Excellent...
Excellent video
1mb of RAM cost $100 back in 1993, 1mb of hard drive space cost $1.
Doom recommend you spend $800 on ram alone 💀
It has been 30 years... so I can no longer remember, but it seems to me in 1994 I spent 100 on 2mb for my Mega STe. Though that may have been cheaper for 30pin SIMMs.
Very nice video!
i just did a 486 build too
PCChips M912 v1.7 with 256k cache
AMIBIOS 07/25/94 12/02/1995X
Intel DX4 100 MHz
32 MB FPM RAM
Cirrus Logic CL-GD5430 2MB VLB
Sound Blaster Pro CT1600
UMC VLB Multi I/O Card
3Com Etherlink III 3C509B-C
Gotek Floppy Emulator with Flashfloppy firmware
LG CD-RW Drive
DOS 6.22 and WFW 3.11
Super Video :-)
Wow, $199 seems surprisingly low for such a kitted out audio setup in the mid-90s. I know that's in the money of that time period but compared to a lot of computer hardware at the time even, that's pretty cheap.
NICE VIDEO MAN! SUBSCRIBED
Good stuff
I still remember the vpool demo and there were options in the demo version of VESA , vlb and even the famous diamond Viper p9000 video card
Nice Korg daughterboard!
(I think Media Vision ISA cards have very buggy MPU401 though, even worse than Sound Blaster)
How about using an IDE SSD just to see how snappy the system would get? I have Windows 3.11/95/98 on SSDs and they are OK with it... :)
or use a period accurate ssd
My socket 3 board is weird. It has PCI, but also only supports 5v CPUs, it also has no VLB. For its RTC battery it uses a Dallas clock chip instead of a coin cell.
just think i was building these before you were born lol lol.
Nice video, however, at 10:33 I see 1024KB Cache on POST. Thought you only had 256KB on the board?
That footage is recorded from an X86box emulation of the same motherboard and CPU to demonstrate the ontrack software because I didn’t have a capture card when I made this first part.
You dont have priority if you use the VLB1 for the vga. It's a parallel bus.
More?
Did I spot 1mb of cache?! 👀
where is the test ?

1:20 well, Clint(LGR) is always complaining that his wood grain vlb board is not great.
