BTW, fully agree with your China comments. It's simply impossible to avoid consumer products that contain at least components from China, so no point in boasting about a refusal to buy from China. That's simply ignorant. Finally, Chinese products are not like Chinese products from 20 or 30 years ago any more, they are very often really good.

They can always do the cutting edge, state-of-the art products but the distributors/retailers in your country order cheap stuff from them to sell it to you, cheap so that you won't have any compunction to buy them. These cheap stuff break down easily so you keep buying for replacements, you keep buying (planned obsolescence) - the more profit for your canadian companies. Bottomline is you get what you pay for. I've read a lot of where the chinese counterpart say to the foreigner partner that for a dollar or few more per unit, they could produce a much better product but the foreigner partner said NO.
As of now, the chinese actually lead in 37 out of 44 new and critical technology. As you said, China is not the China of 20 years ago.

I have visited my friend's clothing factory in Zhangjiagang.
He mentioned that European clothing companies are willing to pay 10 yuan for a lv.10 quality product(e.g.), whereas North American clothing companies are only willing to pay 2-5 yuan...
Their factory can collaborate with factories along the entire street, ranging from buttons to zippers, from various dyes to fabrics, from manual production to the most advanced 3D weaving machines, laser cutting. They have enough production system needed to produce products of lv.20 quality .

@@CanadianCuttingEdge Thank you. You are right and many of us are pushing as hard to make things better at home. Part of it starts by continually asking everyone (starting by our leaders and legislators) whether this current short-sighted, "shareholder profits-over-every-other-concern model" is still preferable to one where different stakeholders (employees, companies, government, towns/regions) have a say in the economy. Whether the current near monopolies in many (most?) industries/sectors favors innovation and lower prices or whether the opposite is true?

We do, in fact we have elections every 4 years so that people can have their say. There are protests, activists and no it's not perfect, but we always try to improve and sometimes we get it wrong. But we don't accept the actions that the Chinese leadership has taken and the world will decide what it's willing to put up with.
MY issue with Made in China, is the disregard to the environment and resource management. It's not every factory that mistreats its employees, but it's enough that I'd rather take my business elsewhere. I really hope the people of China rise up against their Gov't and treat ALL their citizens with dignity and respect.
China can't keep dodging this, times up!

    • @gaberoo9099
      @gaberoo9099 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@mrmj2397 Agree. My issue is that our makers are competing against many forms of subsidies to Chinese manufacturers, not only in the form of subsidies but also by preferential shipping and tax treatment when they are allowed to use loopholes such as the "de minimis rule" which exempts their shipments from tax as well as customs screening. Chinese steel is subsidized by their government and I bet most other materials made for export are subsidized too. They've done this in one industry after another to support their own brands until they are competitive and then until they wipe out the competition. The latest industry they plan to conquer is the EV market.

@gaberoo9099 ugh... ya I know, but change is already happening. New factories in Mexico, India, Thailand etc. And they will come with their own issues I'm sure. But I think it will solve more than it creates at the end of the day. Perhaps it's impractical to do ALL the manufacturing here? But companies could do design, layouts etc. Then just have all the parts made, say in Mexico? Then, our Canadian Manufacturer here, has staff that receives, assembles, QC's the product, sharpening or even handles and colour ways?
Might not be ideal, will take the right connections and a bit of money and risk? At least, from start to finish, that product never left N. America, is made from the earth that built this continent .... sorry I was having a Patriatic attack there ... I'm okay now.
But ya, if the shift heads next door would quit f*king around, we get the Turd out of the punch bowl. We might just come out alright in a decade er so?? Optimistic, I know ... lol

We still have to pay rent, and in some housing, utilities, we live off very little (unless you're a hustler having illegitimate kid after kid) and because the Govt "owns us" if we do go to work and try to be self-sufficient and get ahead in life, we just end up having to give the money back.

One of the worst parts is that it's counter productive (from the perspective of the insurance companies and gov) to claw back every penny a disabled person earns because the the better off a person is the less support they need, but it comes (generally) as slow growth process, but if they cut everything off then there is no space for growth to happen

I am really sorry to hear about your financial situation. I am guilty of not commenting enough on your videos but I've been watching a while. I hope you continue to make videos for your own enjoyment, in whatever form that takes. As far as the Made in China goes ... I know a lot of knife people who claim to only buy USA made. I think part of my frustration is the quality. They give US knife makers a huge pass on quality control (Uneven blade grinds, bad centering, lock failure, etc) while claiming Chinese products are inferior. Being USA made, or Italian, or German, etc., doesn't mean an inherent rise in quality. Thank you for all you do

The brands are not run by the original founders (or their descendants) of the companies, and most have been sold various times. Brands like Shrade, Kershaw, Gerber, and many more are selling truly awful knives in their lowest price ranges. Thankfully those brands seem to be seeing the need to make some better stuff too, but only VERY rarely in the sub $100USD price range.

I'm sorry for your situation with disability. I hope this gets better for you. I greatly appreciate your help reviewing budget knives with a thorough and honest approach.
With regards to the China issue,well...that's a complex topic. Many of us would like to have options other than "made in China" but there are not that many out there. No matter how many letters one may write to manufacturers, profits drive stock prices and that dictates where/how products are made. China (and many other countries) have many ways of supporting their manufacturing sectors so that our own manufacturers have to contend with all of these aids given to Chinese producers (it is not a level playing field). Finance has sucked the air out of our US economy for other sectors such as manufacturing. Shareholder uber alles has been the rallying cry of the likes of Milton Friedman's free traders and seeking that last penny of profit takes precedence over long term investments in R&D, manufacturing, etc. Tax breaks to corporations are not invested in producing goods/services but rather stock buybacks. We've lost appreciation for what it is to make things and forget that the process of manufacturing itself involves creativity. China sees itself in a competition with the rest of the world (particularly the US) and is acting that way (with an unprecedented military buildup and aggressive tactics in the south china sea). To say that "made in China" has no cost to the rest of the world is, well, disingenuous. US is not the only country that wants to avoid a second "China shock" and many countries are acting to protect their own industries from the onslaught of heavily subsidized Chinese products, particularly electric vehicles. If only we had to worry about knives made in China, that would not be a big deal; it's a totally different matter when the computer chips that operate your weapon systems are made there (as well as many medicines, personal protective equipment such as masks, etc).

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge

I have a little Gerber US1 lockback made in the states. 2 1/2 inch 420HC steel blade. It retails for $31 US on the Gerber site I can deflect the blade over 1/8 inch with just a little pressure. As you say, every country makes great products and every country makes duds. My US made Buck 119 Special is a fantastic knife made even more so by the fact that I paid less than $60 CDN for it on sale at Canadian Tire a few years ago. Many people don't seem to realize that a lot of the big name knife companies outsource a lot of production to China. The knives are still designed domestically and QC is usually very tight. I won't try and speak to Chinese made knives from Chinese companies because I don't have any. You take care Jake. I have my fingers crossed that you'll get a break.

😅I think that Americans get a bad impression of Chinese knives from the knives sold in gas stations and corner stores (those $10 to $20 knives). In Canada we don't have that problem as knives are generally not sold in such outlets. Canadians usually buy knives from large box/hardware stores, or from 3 or 4 large on line stores that sell quality knives (knives priced at $75 and up).
Canadians probably see fewer cheap knives than our American brothers, and the result is Canadians have a better opinion of knives made in China.

Even our politicians had a awakening go from de-coupling to de-risking to call for normalization realizing how much we depand on China (Austrian already back to business with China), we're still threatening China with santions with Yelln trip!Granted we have more leverage than Australia or Europeans's economy rely more on trade plus we have huge consumers base and cultures!
These people are ignorant in a sense they had little understanding of how capitalism work!
Not that first world countries is not capable of producing products China produce! It just we're at a late stage capitalism and no longer cost effective, that's why even US compenies had to off-shored!
China per capita GDP is stll only 1/4 of ($1300vs$80000) US even though many think their economy is biger than US because of 4 time populations!
Remember we were the manufacturing power house like China today in the 50s&60s, Just as the Chinese lift the whole of Asia up given it size, we lift the rest of the West then!
If China can become 1st world, they gonna have to outsourse like we do,I suspect already happening via Vietnam or African Nations in small scale! I don't know they want to follow our total capitalist ideology!
That's the roots of China US conflicts! In socialist ideology government total support for industrial is seen as comm good (they are the one lower all these renewables energy products price let say 80-90% in astonishingly short time), in US is seen as unfair business practice! Profits should be all companies motives!
My last point is in a "free world" as we dub, we're propagandize day and night by media and politicians and not reality we live in!
If you want to reallt "kow", go watch a few of " Inside Chinese Business " channel(American doing business in China), then you might even understand more details what realities are!

The problem with Chinese manufacturing is regulatory. Health, safety (both worker safety and end user safety), and environmental standards are not what they are in the western world. It's even common to have fraudulent western standards body markings on products.
They are capable of making things to a very high standard (though not the very highest), if they are properly compensated and there is quality control oversight.
And of course garbage can come from anywhere in the world, but there is a higher percentage of toxic throwaway garbage from China.
I gave found however, that with knives the situation seems better than average with Chinese-made products.

To be honest and truthful, China is mainly preoccupied with quantity over quality! In MY area of experience: Electronics, bikes and bike parts, clothes, shoes and yes... knives! Electronics are deficient, bikes and bike parts, close to worthless, clothes and shoes a very short life span and knives are not so bad but still vastly surpassed by knife makers all over the world like Japan, Taiwan (And yes Taiwan IS NOT part of China) Europe, Pakistan and the U.S.

Chinese companies are well known for their desire for quantity over quality, but I think most companies are these days. The clearest and best exceptions (well over 90% of the time) is small companies in Europe and North America with less than 100 employees and most especially small companies with less than a dozen employees - these are the places where top quality is most likely to be found.

Not buying something because it was made in country X is just plain jingoistic 99% of the time. People complaining about Chinese goods conveniently forget that most western companies moved their production to China to screw over the working class and increase their profit margins. Governments, both right wing and left wing let this happen over 4 decades now, not caring about the working class and the poor, just letting the rich get richer. Now suddenly they point to China and say that China is the enemy and start levying tariffs, and complain about the slave labor. These problems were rampant 30-40 years ago, so why did you let your companies maximize profits and screw over union workers? Communist China has been the enemy of the US and Nato since the 1950s - they sided with North Korea in the Korean war, they sided with Vietnam during the Vietnamese war, so regardless of which side was right or wrong, they were always the enemy, right? Did they stop being the enemy just because you could get richer? This is so goddamn Orwellian that I just find myself laughing and shaking my head - "...to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it..."
