    People don't realize that they should wash their hands, bowls, and surfaces regularly when feeding kibble. Unfortunately, most pet owners don't clean food and water bowls after each meal, either. Then they wonder why bowls get slimy! At least raw feeders are much cleaner. Amazing video, as always (:

      I didn't know this when i fed kibble.

      I know!! I used to walk dogs I couldn’t believe how many dog owners wouldn’t wash their dog bowls. Disgusting! I would always wash them, poor doggos

    • @jesscaticles
      @jesscaticles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tracey7209 I was a dog walker too! Also a cat sitter. And yes, that's exactly how I know this. Soooooo many people would say "just top off the bowl when it gets low". Like what? Refill on top of DAYS old food? Plus orange, slimy, yucky water bowls.

      I feed raw and always change water after they drink it XD I only fill up half of the bowl so I don't waste water !

    I was contemplating going on raw feeding for almost 3 years, before I find your channel and never had the guts to do it. I simply didn't know where to start and was thinking the preparation would be too much to handle, because me and my family have always been plant-based. I didn't know the first thing about handling meat. But your videos first gave me a sense of feasibility and then I found myself taking notes and searching thorough the links you provided. And one day I found myself asking all my local shops which kind of cuts they have and how can I find specific organs. I even purchased some necessary tools for preparation stage less than a week or two weeks period. (I lost the sense of time during these corona-days). And yesterday I made my first little batch of raw food for my cats! It was easier then I thought, but took a pretty while to prepare raw meaty bones for a first timer like me. They were at ease when I offered raw meat during the last week period, so I figured I can start a slow transitioning process. I will feed 1/3 raw, 2/3 kibble for the first 7-10 days and then up the raw ratio weekly, because my mom would get so angry if they start throwing up or having litter problems. As the bone content, I plan to ease into it slowly because they never in their life tried to eat a bone. I hope it goes smoothly. Wow I wrote quite a paragraph there, sorry! But I want to thank you making this possible for me and my cats. Your videos are the best and you deserve so much more recognition. Much love.

      I loved reading this! You are doing a lot better than many with the transition and research. I also commend vegetarians/vegans tremendously for choosing to feed their pets raw! You're awesome!

    • @floater9873
      @floater9873 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As a vegetarian of many years who has never prepared meat, I agree! One of the most intimidating things for me for years was the fact that I'm completely lost in meat sections of stores and have pretty much no idea what I'm looking for or how to cut meat, let alone bones etc. But through these videos I've found a lot of useful info that's given me the confidence I need to make the transition. I'm sure it'll get easier as I go along! 😅

    Something to keep in mind for the picky phase-- There's a study from the 90's that found that it can take human children about 8 to 15 times of tasting a food they don't like to adapt to the taste. I've found that to be similar for my fussy dog too!

    I'm here to spread the word. My dog was vomiting, diarrhea, rough hair and shedding bad. Brought my dog to 3 vets spent $3000 to have him prescribed special "pre-digest food". When that didn't work I spend $2000 more bringing him to the university of Minnesota where they prescribed him another food saying he had a "soft stomach". When that failed I went to youtube and researched raw diet and was lucky to have a neighbor that sells it! It changed his life within days his hair got soft stopped shedding as much was energetic and had great stools! Now he only pukes if he eats too much uncooked bone that I give him to clean his teeth. He has been on raw now for 4 years without any problems. My neighbor is putting his dog down tomorrow and won't even give him a chance on raw which is why I'm writing this. I REALLY want people to be aware about how dried dog food absorbs all the water from animal's organs and ruins them. You will notice they stop drinking about 80% of their daily water because they don't get dehydrated on raw. Walmart sells food in tubes and so does Coborns if you have them. I use this in combination of Titan red or blue. Please do your dog a favor and make the switch. Don't let money thieving vets rob you blind and prescribe your dog garbage so they can earn monthly fees for the prescription. The bacteria BS is complete rubbish. Dogs are natural raw meat hunters scavenging anything they can find in the wild and I put raw steaks for myself on my counter and break eggs daily and have never been sick. I personally enjoy sushi and even was on a sashimi diet for a while. It's just a scare tactic. Just switch slowly so your dog can adjust from bad to good food. Thank you if you make the switch I appreciate you caring for your animal, unlike my neighbor :(

    I know mushers in Alaska who feed wild caught salmon that they process and dry themselves then toss it into a cooker as needed they do feed a high quality kibble as well but their main diet is salmon and wild game. And these dog's are so full of energy and healthy that they'll run circles around most dogs down here that get primarily a kibble food diet.

      Cats don’t like change, so don’t be surprised if your cat turns their nose (at first). I learned the heart is high in Taurine from these videos so bought some for £1 and wow it’s like my cat knew it good for him, because he went crazy for it. I’m still transitioning my cat as he’s very stubborn so I add wet food, kibble and raw turkey mince, heart and liver sometimes topped with oily fish or sprat too

    Just recently discovered your channel and I love every content you upload.
    I moved to my boyfriend into a different country a while ago and we finally decided to get 2 Cats soon.
    I had a Cat once when I grew up, he died few years ago , he was old but also had a lot of problems with his teeth and other stuff! After reading so much into Food (we never raw fed, but back then i didnt even knew this kinda thing exists) i realise now why it even got so bad in the first place and feel so bad thinking about it. Now I want to do everything right with the Cats I gonna adopt in the future and def wanna Raw Feed but I am anxious I do something wrong, I watched Videos, your whole channel and Ive read so much into it in forums and websites. I am still unsure about the calculating and about feeding the right parts or feeding enough :D We have a Pet Store close by that sell Raw meat frozen in big packages, I havent checked it out much cuz I was in a hurry but I am not sure what kinda parts of animals they sell, or if they are even good without extra stuff put into them...
    I am probably just overdramatic and think to much about that stuff lmao
    Thanks for your Hard work on your Videos tho and keep it up! :)

    Mariah! Thank you thank you thank YOU!! so much for all of your hard work and sharing it with us. Ive wanted to do a diy diet for my dog and cats for a long time but ive been so intimidated and let the obstacles discourage me.
    My dog is currently on Stella and Chewys bc i have a familial employee discount... but theres always been something about it that didnt sit right with me. My cats are still on high quality kibble and wet food because one is picky and grazes throughout the day while the other will simply eat her leftovers, or it will be left out and go bad. (any tips for that would be much appreciated)
    I simply didnt know what i didnt know. I appreciate u endlessly for doing a lot of the initial work for me, im ready to dive in and try again. 💓💓💓💓

    Ran across this video, and thought I would take a peek. Both our pups came from a breeder that feeds raw, so we just went with it. Luckily, we have a company in our area that provides raw diet foods, so we are able to buy meat that is packaged with 80% muscle, 10% organ and 10% bone as a base. Then you can get the meaty bones, and other additions to the diet to keep them on the right track. Our pups are doing great, no allergies or health issues like we had with our last few dogs that were on kibble. And yes, keep up on the washing, and watch the poop. It makes those potty trips so much more interesting.

    I have been feeding my baby who is 6 months old vital essential raw frozen dried cat food patties. My aunt bought some chicken liver yesterday I thought I would cut up a small piece and give it to her to see If she would like it. She loved it she was crying for more lol. She's been good so far. Today I bought some chicken thighs, gizzards and chicken liver. I took a tiny piece of chicken and gizzard for her to try to see if she would like it. She ate it all and crying for more. 🤦‍♀️🤣 now I have a thing of
    - chicken liver
    - gizzards
    - chicken thighs
    Do you have any suggestions on how to start feeding her what with I have for now and what do I need to add? I still have her frozen raw dried food she has 4 bricks left and 4 cans of tiki cat after dark chicken and duck that I would like to use up. Kinda overwhelming where to start and how much to give her as she's 7.5lbs and if I need to buy nutrition supplements to add to her raw diet? I am not there yet to give her half or whole prey just yet. This is all new. If you are able to help me to start me off would be a great help. Do not want to get confused or overwhelmed to start off with.
    I did check out a website perfectlyrawsome.com on steps to transit to raw but I just feel like she can dive right in as she loved it so much as she's a kitten as it says on your video if they are kitten they can transit pretty fast.
    Thanks 😊 🙏

    Maybe you could make a video for feeding a litter of puppies their first meal and what to feed them over the next 5 weeks. My last litter I started them on raw ground beef with goats milk but this litter I think I'm going to start with ground Turkey because I read it's easier to digest. I read dogs are more prone to chicken allergies than any other meat. So I thought I'd wait on that. My mama dog regurgitates her food for her puppies so I want to make sure I feed her what I want them to eat. She only does this if she doesn't see me feed them or they lick at her mouth too much and stimulate her to regurgitate for them.

    • @PawsofPrey
      @PawsofPrey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How about just feeding a whole prey? Like a whole chicken or a whole deboned fish etc? Would that provide everything they need? I know the bigger prey would have to be bought separate but let’s say I do a whole beef. I’d get the meaty bone, liver etc to mimic a whole prey. Would that suffice instead of creating complex meals?

      Don't feed chicken necks to large dogs, they can choke on them and there is not much nutrition in them for a big dog. My boy, a Mastiff x is getting raw turkey neck once a day as well as his other food, he loves them.

    Tip when feeding raw, freeze smaller items like chicken wings and stuff especially if u have a large breed. I had rott that I put on a raw diet towards the end of his life. That man literally would try to swallow thawed chicken wings and choked a couple of times. Freezing them he had no choice but to sit there and chew thru it which also cleans their teeth believe it or not. Soft meats like liver, organs and other stuff most likely will just slide right down into the tummy

    Curious question, I'm adopting a kitten next month and your video mentioned for kittens it's better to to cut cold turkey when transitioning them into different food/diet. Would it be too much for the kitten during its first few weeks to a new environment though? I don't want the little guy to stress out too much on simple things like eating and pooping lol...anyway, awesome contents and I'll be definitely putting my fur baby on mostly raw food diet for as long as I can sustain it :) Need to start shopping at local butcher shops and pay more attention at the frozen food aisle

    Yeah. I tried. My dogs initially were exuberant. Until the puking started. Puking on the carpet, puking on my bed, puking and hiding it. Loose stools were manageable but they were barking at the door all night to go out. So no sleep for anyone.
    Then I got grossed out by the raw weird shi* like internal organs, etc. I cleaned and cleaned as I dealt with the food but I started freaking out about just wiping germs around the dishes and counters and cutting board. The shopping added hours, a drive, an increased carbon footprint, and refrigerator/freezer space problems to my life, not to mention the prep work with the disgusting “meat. “ Another giant issue was that the dogs wanted to take their “meaty bones” and raw chicken wings, etc.away from their plate to gnaw on them. They were dragging that ish on the carpet, into their beds, all over the house. I tried to give those ‘project’ foods to them outside which involved weather and pieces of food covered in dirt and beauty bark sometimes laying around attracting flies until I’d discover them when gardening.
    I tried to stay calm, but shortly the dogs started to refuse to eat any of it. Where at first a raw chicken wing was a great treat, they began to SNIFF AND RUN from the food. When I saw my precious Papillon shaking in the kitchen corner waiting for his dinner, and our Doberman losing weight and sleeping too much, and the ‘lives-to-eat’ Aussie Mix refusing to eat but sitting at my feet giving me her awful stare which means she is imparting a psychic message, I tried a different tactic and ‘gently cooked’ stuff. However, even previously beloved food like scrambled eggs or barely cooked chicken livers were REFUSED! It was a three dog mutiny!
    The morning I gave them their regular portions of Science Diet canned and dry food with a treat of a little piece of boiled chicken on top, peace returned. The dogs hungrily ate. They quit shitt*ng and vomiting. I didn’t have to wash butts or disinfect the kitchen. We began to sleep all night again. I stopped getting the stink eye from Her Highness. But the H Mart got my $87 in meaty ribs, spleen, chicken wings, etc which were left hogging my freezer and Amazon got the supplements business. I tried. I really did. I love our dogs and want them to be happy and healthy.
    I offered the meaty bones and animal guts to everyone I know with a pet, but no takers so it went in the trash. It was an expensive experiment. So we will have evil processed foods, but less mental health therapy, and peace at meal times. I got the valuable freezer space back. And I’ll just add it to my general guilt burden but keep loving my dog kids ever so.

    Talking about transition. Are there situations when pets just refuse to transition? I've been trying to switch for a month now, but my cat refuses to eat anything but clean muscle meat (any animal) and chicken liver.
    I can't provide all the nutritions he needs because he absolutely hates any organs except chicken liver. Even if it's bird meat mixed with grind chicken necks, he won't touch it.
    I've tried adding a little bit of warm unseasoned chicken broth, salmon oil, egg yolk, wet food. He just licks around it and leaves all the organs to dry out :(
    Frozen, warm, a little bit boiled, dried - nothing works.
    I tried getting him a little bit more hungry than he usually is, playing a lot to get him feeling hungry. But he will go chew on my dill or even houseplants rather than eat organs.
    I have some tips I haven't tried out yet but I'm starting to think it's impossible to get him eat anything but muscle meat and chicken liver. :(

    What’s the research behind feeding oysters (either cooked or raw) for cats? It’s hard to find fresh mussels in Colorado Springs and oysters are the closest bivalve mollusk I can readily find. Also, would freeze-dried green lipped mussels (sold by the honest kitchen) be a decent substitute for fresh mussels?

    • @PawsofPrey
      @PawsofPrey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All shellfish should be fed steamed/cooked to eliminate the risk of toxoplasma gondii, and raw feeders feed them because of their high zinc and manganese content! (oysters - zinc. blue or green lipped mussels - manganese) freeze dried GLM is fine to feed but the manganese content isn't as prevalent in them as it is in blue mussels. Green tripe is a great manganese source if you can't source mussels.

      Fish is mainly a source of omega 3-s and shouldn't be fed super often, maybe once a week or so. rabbit and duck heads count into raw meaty bones yes, but you would need to give them more than just that! They need a bit more muscle meat to balance out that bone intake since heads are pretty bone-heavy, as well as liver. The brain and eyes count as a second secreting organ if fed often, but supplying spleen, kidney, thymus, or pancreas would be beneficial in getting a bit more of a nutrient boost. Just watch the stool, if it's runny, cut back on that second secreting organ, of too firm and crumbly, they may be eating too much bone.

    (Beef version) The ingredients for dogs are: beef, beef liver, pumpkin seeds, beef spleen, carrots, apples, butternut squash, ground flaxseed, dried kelp, broccoli, apple cider vinegar, salmon oil, rosemary extract, blueberries, and dried chicory root. The use monomorillonite clay for shape, mixed tocopherols as a preservative, and freeze dry it.

I had to put her back onto kibble when COVID-19 made getting meat for her difficult. She refuses point blank to eat the ready done complete meals available. So I made her meals myself. One of the nurses at our vets has said (very nastily) that I will poison my dog because I give her human grade meat. I should give her dog food. She won’t eat it, we put a lot of effort into trying to get her on ready done meals. Let’s face it, the ready done stuff takes a lot of the worry about getting her diet balanced and healthy. The premade raw diet packages come with the FDA “ guarantee” that the meat won’t contain things like parasites or salmonella and therefore safe for raw consumption. However each brand of these premade raw dog packages have had to recall packages due to contamination. This is much like human grace food which is under the same FDA compliance albeit for human safety even if we don’t eat the meat raw. Bad things happen in food recalls to bagged kibble too there is no perfect safety net. Do what you can at this moment that is the best for your dog. Most normal vets have no formal training in nutrition for animals and that is a sad reality. It’s up to you to research and make the best decision for your dog.

      If you're asking if the nurse is right about poisoning your dog with human grade meat then of course not! However feeding an unbalanced diet over the course of time can cause harm.
