One of the Atlus staff members in Japan happened to be a crazy DMC fan. He came up with the idea of having Dante in a SMT game. Considering that Nocturne would be a game all about demons, having Dante feature in it didn't seem too bad. So the companies talked it out and, lo and behold, here's Dante.
Not sure how canon the anime can be considered, but they hint towards the fact that being shot in the heart could kill or atleast seriously injure Dante.
I got Dante this week in my copy of SMT, hes so good! I love DMC anyway, but hes so powerful he rocks haha. Glad I finally found a clip of Showtime, been trying to find one to show to my friend.
Dante's like the spiritual twin of Vega from Pulp Fiction. Bad things always happen when to Vega when he goes to the toilet, bad things always happen to Dante when he SHOWS people the toilet :P
I absolutely loved Dante in this game. Totally badass. Also, how the heck did Dante get to jump on the screen like? I noticed on the profile shot I saw his leaps up, as if he was jumping? Does the Japan edition have animation when you view the profiles?
He is a features in the game Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne because of a deal Atlus made with Capcom. This game got Dante, DMC-3 got the design for the Devil Trigger.
You name the main character (First name, surname, and nickname), though most refer to him a Demi-fiend (Hitoshura) In the Radio Drama in japan though, the name he is given is Naoki Kashima

They decided to have a crossover and have Dante appear to try to hunt you down (and he can join you). In exchange, the artist of this game designed Dante's Devil Trigger in DMC3.
@Savagegolem Never got the evil ending, although i have gotten the ultimate lucifer fight ending (which I maintain is a good ending as god for all intents and purposes in this game is evil) Btw, do you play persona?
@Savagegolem Ah true true, Mundus is the correct spelling, given how many years it has been I think I can be forgiven. Oh I just went over it again and yeah you are right, he did not get tricked into releasing mundus (I must have justified their reason for getting dante to the island when really it was stupider than I thought XD) but regardless dante was still easily tricked by trish and my point that dante is not infallable or evil in this game for being tricked remains.
intresting theory however, i bought it cause i wanted a fun evil looking game and this seemed as a right choice but then again your right he is just annoying.
I dont see why somone would get this game just because dante is in it, he doesnt even play a real part in the story, hes just annoying and interupts the game. Besides i think he was added just to attract people in north america to buy the game sinse nobody here has really ever heard of SMT before this game was reliesed. personaly i think dante should stay in his little capcom games and stay away from a great series like SMT.

Nah, I can't remember what level I was on, but it wasn't even lvl 55 and he still was easy like hell. Really, if you can get to that point in the Amala labyrhinth, then Dante shouldn't be a problem anymore. For those that would still be getting their behinds kicked by him: you're probably doing something really, really wrong =p.

Maybe where I'm from it's hard to find. I know one friend who purchased it from a gamestop out of town for almost $60.

The anime is crap both story and mechanics wise, if it were to be considered cannon the games would not be.
