    The beautiful story behind this was that the French poet Stephane Mallarme inspired Debussy. One of Mallarme's visions was to bring all art forms together, music, dance and poetry. This came to fruition when Vaslav Nijinsky choreographed a ballet to this piece of music.

    3:22 - 3:26 that Whole Tone part on the flute: pure delight on the ears. Makes me feel like I am being whisked away to an unknown, dream-like plane unlike anywhere in the physical world...

    • @dr.rolanddavis
      @dr.rolanddavis 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      A wonderful moment indeed.
      Forgive me if you already noticed this, but although it gives the impression of whole tone, It’s not quite whole tone: the G# in the initial descending part … just before the lowest note G natural and then the C natural occurring in the penultimate place before the return to C sharp (at the top) makes this not quite whole tone. The apex and nadir “outline” whole tone but its chromatic alterations make it otherwise. The other fun thing is that this “whisking away” passage is actually 2 flutes: 1st flute plays quick notes (in groups of 4) going down-up-down, then seamlessly the 2nd flute plays up-down-up, then 1st flute up-up-up with the 2nd flute joining for the last four notes - but it all sounds like just 1 flute !
      I wish you health and joy
      and many more rapturous musical moments in 2024

      @@dr.rolanddavis thank you for the insightful reply: I do enjoy reading these. After repeat listens I did ask myself was it a whole-tone part or chromatic part: or a blend of the two? Either way, one of my favourite moments of the entire piece and one that brings me closer to that hazy, dream-like place.
      And many returns to you, hope your 2024 will be a healthy and prosperous one :)

    Bucolique et enivrant. Lorsqu'on regarde le portrait de Debussy jeune au moment où il écrivit cette œuvre, on se dit que c'est lui le faune❤

    After I took off my body,
    my soul would wander over
    the sea and the town.
    And on the side of that
    street lamp,
    I will be reunited with
    someone I met once
    on a young day.
    Greetings from Japan.
