Overshadowed by Tarja's departure and the surrounding drama, Dark Passion Play is Nightwish's most underrated album, featuring several bona fide classic tracks including this stirring anthem. I am happy to see Anette get her deserved time under the Zharoffscope and I hope you eventually check out other Olzon epics like Bye Bye Beautiful and Ghost River. In mythology, Amaranth is known as the flower of immortality, Nightwish has so many amazing songs that I could watch you react to Nightwish until the end of time!
Couldn't agree more, Anette was a very unrated singer who was, in my opinion, unjustly treated by the fans certainly. Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are two of my favourite albums by Nightwish, always on my list of albums to play through in their entirety.
While Anette is my least favorite of the 3 singers, I still really like the albums she did, especially Imaginaerum which might be one of my favorite Nightwish albums all-time. I think part of the issue with many fans, is the very big difference in voices between Tarja and Anette. The very deep, operatic voice directly to Anettes more pop'y voice is a very stark contrast, and I think that leap was simply too big for many people. Floor hits a very nice inbetween the 2 of them with her classical voice, and she has that live energy that is top-notch. I think if the rotation of singers had been Tarja -> Floor -> Anette, Anette would have been received a lot better due to a more gradual change edit: some words and errors
Anette is a very underrated vocalist, and I feel like she got a raw deal from her time in Nightwish - the band didn’t treat her well, and a lot of fans dismissed her talents. I think she sounds great on “Dark Passion” and especially “Imaginaerum.”
@@silverblack5475 I love Floor Jansen and think that she does a fine job with Nightwish's older material, but I haven't liked the new songs that she's been on.
I've been a Nightwish fan for just over 15 years and I love all three singers and the different aspects they've brought to the albums. So glad you're looking at one of her songs. Eva, Turn Loose the Mermaids and Meadows of Heaven also highlight her voice 😁
I think I read that the song Eva is the one that she sang fot the casting when Nightwish was looking for the new singer. That recording gave her the position of lead singer.
+1000 for Cadence, that song is incredible. Seven Days to the Wolves would honestly be worth a reaction with Anette and with Floor because they both have amazing takes on the song.
The angel isn't dead! The music video is taking inspiration from a painting called "The Wounded Angel" by Hugo Simberg. It's a pretty damn cool painting! Definitely look it up, if you haven't yet.
Anette has this amazing witchyness to her voice which really works with the stories on the two albums she did. They bring this danger and energy into the music. And then there is the juxtaposition of the very soft vocals like in Eva, Meadows of Heaven, Slow Love Slow. She is versatile and really good at what she does, but I feel like Nightwish needed a different type of versatility in the long run. I am happy though that she was there for the time that she was. I am not sure how she feels about Nightwish currently. I understand if she does not have fond memories, but I hope she is proud of what they created on those two albums.
Anette came in and took on the material on 'Dark Passion Play' and sang them like a champ. The album written in her voice 'Imaginaerum' was such a powerhouse record. Unfortunate way how it ended with Anette but the material she is doing these days is really good.
This is the first Nightwish song I ever heard, and I'm so glad it was because it allowed me to appreciate Anette without the baggage and drama of the Tarja situation. She brought a totally new energy to Nightwish and I think she really suited this era of the band. She's also the only Nightwish singer I've seen live, and I distinctly remember her hot pink high heels 😂 A very Anette fashion choice and she owned it. I would love to hear you react to Cadence of Her Last Breath with Anette, it's one of my favorite Nightwish songs and her performance in it is stellar.
It was good in the studio version, unfortunately she didn't really handle the concerts. I've been there about 5 times and Anetta never once managed to sing the concert well. She can't compare to Tarja or Floor at all.
mine too! i like floor and tarja on their own, but I think anette's brightness lightens nightwish too dark melodies. the darkness in imaginaerum feels deranged rather than epic/mysterious/sad and it makes it all the more fun
please, please do more of Anette's era. She is my favourite of the three singers, not because she is the best, most over the top of the three, but because she brought a certain ambiance to the band, an emotion that was uniquely hers. And it's so vindicating to hear someone recognize her brilliance.
I think you nailed it. I can intellectually appreciate that Floor is a more versatile, technically more adept singer, but man, her voice doesn't do the same for me on an emotional level most of the time. She has her moments, like "The greatest show on earth", but her renditions of the songs originally sung by Anette are just ... not my cup of tea.
I agree! It’s always so nice to hear we are many. If it wasn’t for her I would have never found and fallen in love with Nightwish. Her voice is like a crystal clear sound of love, and I always loved the emotion she brought to the songs which were not from her era. I get Floor is the best singer of NW but she rarely touches me emotionally. Also while I recognize her immense technical talent in singing, I find the sound of her voice utterly boring. It’s big, but totally flat. I can’t relate at all to the people who praise her. The only one who actually gets me little excited is Elisabeth, since she’s so enthusiastic in her Floor praise. 😄 But it’s mostly about the technical aspect and not the voice itself. Also I think Floor is usually too masculine and aggressive in her interpretation. I never wished that for the female lead as we already had Marco. Ironically he’s gone now..
Anette was the one who brought vocal flexibility for the first time in the band. I loved Tarja's vocals, but she did one thing (one thing very well, but still). Anette could do the smoky jazz of Slow Love Slow, she does the lilting and folky sound in The Islander to perfectly match Marco, she's a bombshell banshee in Scaretale, and her vocalizations in Sahara were great. She couldn't sing Tarja's stuff, but oh well there were so many other types of styles she brought to the table and the band fully showcased that. Floor is amazing as well and overall my personal favorite. She has flexibility and can sing Tarja-era songs. She can technically sing Anette-era as well, but those songs were truly written with Anette's voice in mind and it absolutely shows so I will always prefer DPP and Imaginearum songs with Anette's voice. Anette's time is such an underrated era in Nightwish and she has never gotten the recognition or respect she deserves.
The background of this music video is from a painting called "The Wounded Angel" by Finnish painter Hugo Simberg. If you look at the painting there is a frame in the music video which matched incredibly closely to the painting
If you remember your reaction to "The Poet and the Pendulum", Anette was the original vocalist on that recording. She had never sung this type of music before when she was chosen for the band; the band she was in before Nightwish was definitely a pop rock band. Her voice has developed a lot since then, and if you'd like to check out where she is vocally currently check out songs from her recent solo album, "Sick of You" and "Parasite". Her husband does some harsh vocals on the album as well.
Dunno about solo but you Elizabeth should really listen to "The Dark Element", Anette Olzon has a 10 times better voice on it than some dirty floor, and composition was done by a Finnish man (follower of Tuomas and Marko Saaresto).
And now for the question that everyone wants to see answered: Who is the best Nightwish singer? I am kidding of course. I love them all. But we all know it's Marko 😉
@@Uuusssaaas he's a good backing vocalist who adds depth. In any case, we'll forgive him for any vocal shortcomings as he plays about eleventy niche instruments flawlessly 😂
I've always loved Anette Olzon's sweet voice over Nightwish's darker symphonic metal instrumentation. "Amaranth" is iconic in the metal world. I loved her playful vocals on "Storytime" too.
Annette was a radical departure from Tarja. say what you want about her, the two albums they did with her were their best selling albums at the time. Some people were also not happy with how she left the band in the middle of the tour. another reactor said, "you never want to be the one that replaced the Legend."
I think ultimately if there was an "issue" with Anette, it was simply that she's a much better studio singer than a live singer, and that is not all that uncommon. She sounds great on their recordings but I've not been that impressed with the live clips I've heard, and I can't really fault her for that - I think it was an oversight during the selection of Tarja's replacement.
She left at the end of the band's performance in Salt Lake City, Utah. Never been to a concert before where it just ended. Band finished a song..left the stage..house lights went up..the end. The band were still great up to that point.
I loved this album when it came out it was a terrific contrast but it was very much needed for the band at the time. I remember people were being incredibly rude saying Anette sounded like a chipmunk with her high notes. Fact is they reached a whole new level and gathered even more fans with Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum
There are also references to other classic Finnish paintings like the boys playing with the toy ship fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leikkivi%C3%A4_poikia_rannalla#/media/Tiedosto:Albert_Edelfelt__-Boys_Playing_on_the_Shore-__Google_Art_Project.jpg
My favorite nightwish songs are actually with Annette Olzon as the singer. Storytime, Turn Loose The Mermaids, The Crow The Owl and the Dove and Seven Days to the Wolves are my personal favorites. Amaranth though holds a special place cause it's the song that introduced me to the band
Same. I heard Amaranth and have been hooked ever since! I think it was just catchy enough of a tune that it stayed in my head and I needed to hear more... A good transition song into the genre that I hadn't explored before.
"The Crow... " is incredible. My introduction to Nightwish was Elvenpath. Wasn't very impressed. My next exposure was Bye, Bye Beautiful. That one pulled me in, so I didn't have the animosity towards Anette that long time fans had. I love Tarja, and think she was the best. But Anette deserves props and Floor is awesome in her own right.
As much as I am a Floor fanboy, I love Anette's voice for how sweet, bright, and innocent she sounds. Dark Passion Play is one of my favourite NW albums, and that is partly due to Anette tying my heartstrings into little knots. Meadows of Heaven is one of the tracks where she truly shines. (That said, it's also the kind of song that would fit Floor like a glove, and I really wish they'd play it live.)
Anette is, like, the sweetest person on earth. I was lucky enough to see Nightwish live when she was at the helm too and it was an amazing gig. She sounded fantastic and the crowd lapped it up. It saddens me when her era is glossed over by some people entirely, especially when the two albums featuring her are (arguably) two of Nightwish’s best. (Both easily in top five for me.) She was treated like crap by so many people and she took it on the chin like a absolute champ for five/six years. Anette has a great belt that always reminds me of Pat Benatar a bit. She knows she is a pop/rock singer, not a classical singer, or particularly well versed in metal, and she never claimed to be. I was devastated as a fan when Tarja was fired, but I stayed open-minded from the get go and Anette stole my heart too. I love Floor as well, but I have moments of missing both of them sometimes. ❤️🔥
Thank you for letting those of us unfortunate enough to not have seen her live to let us know more about the person behind the pleasant voice! I like all of their singers even though I have my favorite. I did not know that Annette was not treated well; that is an absolute shame, and not something any *true* fan (or band member) should do, just because a member is replaced. (You can treat them like crap after they have given a reason to be treated as such, and not before.) Thanks again--Nightwish is in my top three of all time.
I'm so glad you finally got to hear Anette, and yes the three females that have been part of Nightwish are very different, and Anette was absolutely overshadowed by Tarja. To me however the change in the female vocalist are a thing that makes this band interesting, with other bands we primarily hear the change though their discography, but with Nightwish it is front and center in a very visusal sence.
I think this is one of Anette's best songs. It's my favorite that she sings. The thumbnail looks like the Official video ,which is based on a Finnish painting called 'The Wounded Angel'.
At last, thank you. The ladies have a different voice, they all bring something of their own to each era, when they were singing. So fabulous you broke down their singing style and vocals. Made my day ❤️❤️❤️
Personally I think Storytime shows of Anette's voice quality more then this song. She's also great in all their 'ballads' such as Eva and Meadows of Heaven.
To me Annette grew as a vocalist in her time with Nightwish. Amaranth showed how good she already was, and Storytime showed her improvement with the band.
Love that Anette is getting some of the spotlight. She's a wonderful singer and a radical, but welcome, departure from their previous operatic sound. If you're gonna feature Anette more, I'd highly recommend Scaretale, Eva, Slow Love, Slow, and Whoever Brings the Night as great examples of what her vocals can do.
Everything happened like a swing: 100% operatic with Tarja, extreme pop, clarity and transparency with Anette, a powerful balance between the two with Floor. Anette floats over the songs without amalgamating, in part due to her clear and transparent voice; which is a respectable style in itself. There are a lot of good NW songs with it, and also my all-time favorite NW: Scaretale.
I know Marko doesn't sing in this particular Nightwish song, but if you want to analyze and enjoy him more he released a solo album called "Pyre of the Black Heart". It's beautiful. He initially released it in Finnish called "Mustan Sydämen Rovio" with all the same songs, just translated. "The Truth Shall Set You Free" is almost like an acoustic *grateful version of Nightwish's "Your's is an Empty Hope". But I'd enjoy seeing you react to the song off his solo album called "The Voice of my Father" and maybe even a comparison to the Finnish version "Isäni ääni". His voice while singing in Finnish is sublime.
On the deluxe edition of “Dark Passion Play,” there’s a demo version of “Amaranth” called “Reach.” The verses are the same, the chorus is different, and Marco sings all the lead vocals.
great suggestions, a little correction...it is "Isäni ääni" and I think it is just a smidge powerfull than english version, our language is of course more natural to sing.
@@JaakkoTK Ah! Meant to double check that after initial posting and completely forgot. Thank you for that correction. I don't doubt it's more powerful than the English version. There's something different that resonates through the songs on the original, even without me being able to understand it. As I said before, it's beautiful.
Even though Annette is not my favorite Nightwish vocalist 1) Dark Passion Play is my favorite NW album 2) Annette’s post Nightwish projects like The Dark Element are great.3) She also works as a nurse and is a very positive person, I suggest filling her on social media.
You remind me so much of someone I once knew and cared a great deal for , I still do . Thank you for having this channel ! I cannot put Into words how moved I’ve been by watching you . I don’t even have a picture of her and seeing you is indescribable. I’m literally crying as I type this . You are a very beautiful woman and your very blessed . Thank you 🙏 😇
From what I've understood Anette didn't really deliver in live performances but the two albums Nightwish made with her are my favorites. She really shines in the song Scaretale, at least in the album version.
She's even better in lives, Tarja's fans create that myth that she is bad in lives and of course she couldn't sing all Tarja's songs because she hadn't her dark operating voice but she was good to many of them, but in her songs she was amazing.
Im so happy you're giving Anette some time. I loved the albums featuring her, Cadence of Her Last Breath, Rest Calm are magnificent. She is doing so well with her solo records and especially with the band The Dark Element. I highly recommend anything from those ventures.
I think some of the shining moments of Anette's era would be her Meadows of heaven, For the hearth I once had, Cadence of her last breath, Eva, Escapist, Turn loose the mermaids and rest calm. I would recommend them also because this are songs that neither Tarja not Floor have sing, so there is less bias toward her performance. Not saying you had bias, but myself and many others do 😅
Agree 100% with the first 4: DPP was the first Nightwish album I heard (and loved); went backwards all the way to Angels Fall First but then lost track. Rediscovered them after seeing Floor sing GLS - and the rest is history as they say...
Probably my favorite song with Anette is The Heart Asks Pleasure First. This song is so beautiful and she sings so passionately, it would be great to see a reaction of it.
I love turn loose the mermaids! Anette does great in their more folky songs. I think I heard a jazz arrangement of one of their songs that Anette also killed, can't remember which song it was though.
This video, as a random recommendation on TH-cam back in 2007, was my introduction to the existence of Nightwish. The combination of symphonic music with heavy guitars done at such an incredibly high level blew my mind and I've been hooked ever since. This is still one of my favourite tracks and Anette's studio version is just so good.
I love the two Nightwish albums where Anette sings. I find her voice brighter and more appealing, and for me it melds better with the band's heaviness.
I like the Albums with Anette. There are really great songs on this albums, "The Poet and the Pendulum" or "Song of myself" for example. ( you did "The Poet..." from Wembley '15, "Song of myself" is for me best from Wacken '13) She had her problems live, specially with the older songs what Tuomas wrote for Tarjas voice. One of the best songs live with Anette is for me "Scaretale", the official video. It's cutted together with scenes from the official music video and a live performance, i like this video. And i like your reaction, but i always like your NW reactions!
Funny, I saw her live in Sydney and I thought she was flawless - and I'd seen Tarja in an early concert and thought she was great too. People judge the 3 vocalists, but they forget the dynamics with Markos voice. Anette and Marko had great dynamic together totally making the concert in my opinion.
Sometimes I think one of the reasons she doesn't sound as good live is due to video quality, and not her voice. There's a concert in Montreal I think, to me she just sounded a little bit tired, and like, why make her sing a difficult song like Over the hills when she's so tired? She was mistreated by them, that's the problem.
Also want to point out a few songs from Tarja's era that I think Anette sung better: Dark Chest of Wonders, Dead to the world, Ever Dream and Sacrament of Wilderness.
Thanks Elizabeth, wonderful as always, I love Annette's voice, again different, it is what makes the band so great 3, great, very different singers. Thanks as always, for cheering me up.
This is my favorite Nightwish song of all time, and controversially Anette is my favorite of the 3 singers, Tarja and Floors vocals are phenomenal too but Anette was my introduction to the band and I just feel like her accent comes through a lot more in her singing while Tarja and Floor don't have as thick of an accent. She's unfortunately rarely ever talked about and Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum albums are always passed over. Her other band The Dark Element is amazing too I'm not sure which songs to recommend but maybe 'The Pallbearer Walks Alone' 'Last Good Day' 'Pills on my Pillow' 'Heres To You' 'Someone You Used To Know' That's a lot of songs I know but I'm not sure which is my favorite because they're all so good.
Anette's voice is so beautiful. She deserves a lot more respect from fans, she did her part, created some amazing music and attracted a lot of new fans too
Annette will always have a huge place in my heart! Her " Meadows of Heaven" and " Storytime" are my favorite versions. I feel the rest of the band truly shined. Marco's vocals had less contrast when he sang with her, and it felt much more unified.
Cool to see this one covered, and to get more insight on Anette's voice (Dark Passion Play was my intro to Nightwish). I especially love how she sounds in the bridge. For more of what Anette can do, I recommend "Sahara", "Slow, Love, Slow", and "Scaretale", especially the latter two.
oh my GOD I can't wait for this one!!!! This song is awesome and one of Annette's best (in studio). Definitely check out more Nightwish!!! "Dead Boy's Poem" LIVE 2018 in Buenos Aires is one of the most beautiful songs Floor has done with the band. Much love Elizabeth! Keep that nightwish content coming!
All this time waiting for a serious reaction and analysis to Anette was worth it. Almost no one valuable reacted to her. Thanks for bringing a bit of calm to Anette's fans out there.🙏🙏 She was (and still is) really hated for not being "clasically trained" like Tarja and for having a style so different. Also, most of the time, when people talk about Nightwish, she is excluded, forgotten, even when the 2 albums they did with her were the best-sold albums of all Nightwish. It would be nice to add also a reaction to a live version with her, it is true that she struggled with some of the songs Tarja used to sing, but there are some that really belong to her and she shines while singing them. I recommend: -Slow, love, slow - Live at Montreaux jazz Festival (2012) th-cam.com/video/6k1jeJBocb8/w-d-xo.html this one is really calm, very jazzy like, it doesn's seem like a Nightwish song at all, but it is. This one belongs to the second album with Anette. -Planet Hell - Live at Montreaux Jazz Festival (2012) th-cam.com/video/KL-6Io1nskw/w-d-xo.html Here she gives everything she has. I think is really impressive. Full of really nice beltings. I love all the little distortions she ads. Even though this one belongs to Tarja's era, Anette really slays it. I would dare to say that Anette's version is even better than the original of Tarja who didn't even belt a single note. (Don't get me wrong, I love Tarja's operatic voice, but is true that she never ever belted and I like some belts here and there). Also I wanna say, Amaranth, even when belongs completely to Anette and is one of her best songs, doesn't really portrays the abilities of her voice. I think she really shines in songs where she can do her nice belts or when her performative side comes to the table like in Scaretale, where she adds a really cool witchy tone to the lyrics and is THE best. It would be nice if Elizabeth could read this. Consider helping with a like if you wanna show your support to my suggestions 🙏🙏 🙏🙏 🙏🙏 🙏🙏
You're incorrect about Tarja never belting, rewatch/listen to the live End of an Era version of Slaying The Dreamer......those "Tell Me Why"'s are hair raising (and one of the handful of reasons i even prefer this version over Floor's Decades version)
@@TheWiseGrif You are right, those are nice belts, and I agree that they are more beautiful than the ones Floor does on that song .Thanks for making me watch/listen to that. Even though, you have to agree that those are an exception, in most of her Nightwish's songs she almost never belted. In fact I believe she started belting more when she launched her solo career. Specifically Planete Hell is a good example of what I say: Anette reformed the song, added her touch, and I believe the result is better. I'm not saying that's always the case, (in fact it's not) but I want to make sure people know that Anette did great things and she shouldn't be hated on.
I always thought Anette was underappreciated... her music is fun it might not be as technically impressive as the other vocalists but I find it really enjoyable all the same.
Absolutely love Nightwish, and this particular video. I know you did a few of their songs earlier, but I would also recommend "Pull Me Under" by Dream Theater. It's such a powerful song.
Impossible to ignore such a fantastic side with Olson. Taking out all those overshadowings and turbulence that time happened, Anette empowered the band to make 2 fantastically perfect albums: Dark Passion Play (which it's Amaranth from) and Imaginaerum (particularly my fave one)
Her last call out "daybreak"... nothing cuter then that. An analysis of some of her music with The Dark Element would really excite me. " Only one who knows me." Is amazing.
The demo for this song was quite a bit different. Along with some lyrical changes, the vocals were actually done by Marko and it was originally titled “Reach”….Definitely worth a listen for comparison. Cheers from Newfoundland
Music video was based on The Wounded Angel painting by Hugo Simberg. Nice to see you explore my favorite era of Nightwish. Please listen to "Storytime", one of the last singles with Anette.
I'm so so so glad to watch this reaction, not only Amaranth is one of my favorite songs but also I have a profound respect for Anette, she is also really talented in her own right, Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum are among my favorite albums from the band. Nightwish is a challenging band, (we) the fans always expect nothing but greatness, that is the reason I truly I admire so much all 3 front singers, and will always forever be grateful for what they have bring to the band all these years.
I miss old Leaves Eyes so much. I only got to see them once live. But they didn’t do great job of building a fan base. Tons of line up changes. Not much touring. North and South American tours canceled because of bad management. Vineland soga was an absolute masterpiece, no reason they couldn’t have been peers of Epica and Nightwish.
Yes, thank you so much for finally checking out Anette! Please listen to more of their material with her! Meadows of Heaven has my vote for the next song to check out, it always makes me so emotional and I'm pretty sure they only ever played it once live
I'm sure many people have already suggested this, but if you want to hear something a bit different from Anette with Nightwish, please listen to Slow, Love, Slow. Live in Montreux is a very decent live performance. 👍
I would love to see your reaction of the band "Soen" you can check their most popular songs, Like lotus, lucidity, illusion, martyrs, such an underrated band with an amazing vocalist
"Tuomas writes music which sounds like film score..." He has already written the music for/and the movie - Imaginaerum. I really suggest to watch it. It will put the whole Imaginaerum album into one story. Some says Anette was a kind of fill between Tarja and Floor but in the movie you can see her and the whole band enjoying the process and having fun. And her "squeeking pigs" in Scaretale is like her sound signiture. She sings here also with Marko. And Slow love slow from the same album - blues from Nightwish.
"I want my tears back" and "turn loose the mermaids" are my two favorite songs from the album, Troy with the irish pipes and any time Marko sings raise tears to the next level man!
Tuomas didn't compose the music for the movie Imaginaerum, another composer (Petri Alanko) took Tuomas songs and give them a cinematic/score style for the film.
I love your enthusiasm in every video, such a joy to watch! It'd be wonderful to watch your reaction of any Blackbriar song (they even have acoustic versions). It's a gothic/alternative/rock/metal band with an enchanting voice I'm sure you'd appreciate
Anette is a magnificent singer especially in the studio , Meadows of Heaven and Eva are totally gorgeous tracks in two incredible albums . Tarja Anette and now Floor give us such a superb collection of hundreds of glimpses of Tuomas' genius.
Great song. Also for more Anette check out her new band Dark Element. Great songs include Sweet Mystery, Ghost and the Reaper, Song the night sings and Not your monster.
I absolutely LOVE Ghost and the Reaper. The first time I ever heard Nightwish was when I won a free copy of the Dark Passion Play album from a draw at a music store, so to me, Annette feels like the "original" vocalist for them. It's still my favorite Nightwish album. I like Tarja, Annette, and Floor, and I'm not very inclined to try to compare them. They have different styles and I like them all. I actually only found out about Dark Element recently and I was very happy to have more Annette to listen to.
I really like Anette's voice in the original studio version of Poet and the Pendulum. That recording made *very* heavy use of back vocals, which I thought were done well to better emphasize emotions. Oh, and her growl on the last "cold world" lyric in the song was epic!
You should definetly check out Ghost River and Storytime when Anette sings it. Magnificent choices were made into that album. Anette was totally different than Tarja, so Tuomas had to write the album with creativity and this made it one of their best albums
@@nicod1361 nah, it was their best BECAUSE of Anette. She had so much difference in her voice, singing choices, that Tuomas and the others had to leave their comfort zone! Until the shift, Tarja kinda defined how Nightwish should sound since her voice is very operatic, so they had to write a music fits that. Anette was completely different. She is kinda... like a musical singer at some points. Just look at them now! Marko left, and to me it really looks like Nightwish was only a side project for Floor, and you can feel it. Floor is so great in singing that it completely changed how Nightwish sounds right away.
@@nicod1361 That is not Anette's fault. Floor is on another level, she can even best out Tarja at some points. If we grade the singers, Anette and Tarja are "A" class singers - with different vibes of course -, but Floor is kind of an S class in the manners of Nightwish songs. She is too good for Nightwish, which becomes more and more mild, and less energetic. They really lost something when Marko and Jukka left. This Nightwish is not the old one anymore.
@@nicod1361 No isn't more popular with Floor dude, you lost her era,her two albums with NW are best selling, people loved Anette and the songs of DPP and imaginaerum. Remember in Wacken 2013 people sung that songs because already knew and loved them from Anette and Tarja. NW was born as a band in 1996 and they had fans years before Floor's coming and the songs from those eras still are the most popular in concerts.
Super underrated Nightwish Era. Other reacts we desperately need: Trivium: In the Shadow of the Abbitor Kilswitch Engage: Holy Diver Double Feature - Megadeth: A Tout le Monde immediately followed by the Set Me Free version with Christina Scabbia Megadeth: Sweating Bullets Anything Shinedown So much more metal \m/
Anything shinedown except the live performances where he had started miming :( used to be one of my favourite bands but I lost so much respect for them after seeing that.
Great analysis of this song as per usual. This is my take on the ridiculously asinine fan squabble of which Nightwish singer is better. Personally, there is no “better”. All three singers possess amazing vocal capabilities in their own way. Not to mention that all three have completely different styles. So, to me, comparing them is pointless. I look at it like this: Century Child is my favorite from Tarja, Imaginareum is my favorite from Annete, and Endless Forms Most Beautiful is my favorite from Floor.
I'm glad to see Anette get her time in the spotlight! I think she deserves more recognition for the sound she brought to Nightwish. All of the singers have added a new layer to the storytelling integral to the core of the band. I would love to recommend more Anette in the songs Scaretale and Slow, Love, Slow. They are wonderfully unique, just as the whole of Imaginaerum is. Haha once you finally hear the full album you can watch the movie!
i always felt that Annette was possibly THE best vocalist for nightwish in the studio but the worst live, what i heard of her live was terrible but i absolutely loved DPP. Floor is for sure the best live vocalist they have had and isnt a slouch by any means in the studio either ( she is in my opinion the second best vocalist they have ever had (Marko is the best obviously)) and before the tarja brigade gets on my back i also loved all of tarjas contributions aswell, i first became a fan when i heard the once album and they have been my all time favourite band since then. you should also check out Reach by nightwish, it is the demo of amaranth they made while they were without a female vocalist and Marko sung the whole thing, its quite different to how amaranth ended up and in my opinion i think i like it more
I adore Anette so much! Easily my favorite Nightwish vocalist, but I love all eras. Shes special to me. I always thought she brought this theater like quality to their music that made her two albums stand out to me. If you'd want more Anette check out Scaretale! One of her finest performances (next to her Poet and the Pendulum, which brings me to tears) and some fun Marco vocals as well. Fun dynamic track with some cool twists and would be awesome to hear you talk about it. Love your channel and what you do! Unrelated, love the color of your nails. Very pretty!
This music video was my introduction to Nightwish. Annette lured me in. Tarja with Over the Hills and Far Away and Planet Hell hooked me. Floor @Wacken 2013 reeled me in an landed me like a fat fish. This song and video were inspired by a painting famous in Finland, Wounded Angel by Hugo Simberg.
Anette ❤️ please do more of her. "Slow love Slow" is a great one (jazzy Nightwish). It would be great If you would do Something from her new band The dark element or something from her solo Album!
I hope to one day see a reaction from Elizabeth to Delain ''We are the others'' Either the classic version or the new ballad version. Both are great and the message is amazing.
@@jezusbloodie Aye, I agree, Stardust is amazing too for example. the reason why I voted for ''We are the others'' is te special place it has in my heart
I also love We Are The Others. Great song, great video. A heavy topic, yes, but one that particularly resonates with many. I was lucky enough to see Delain and Sabaton open for Nightwish. Such an amazing show.
Dark Passion Play was my introduction to Nightwish and because of this I always tend to compare the other two singers to Anette and how great this album was. Bye bye beautiful, Seven days, etc.
I never notice you skipped the Anette Olzon vids. This is my favorite Nightwish time between 2006 and 2009. I love all their vocalists but I like the music during these years the best. I actually found one of my top ten favorite female fronted bands Amaranthe searching for the song Amaranth.
My favorite song Annette sings with Nightwish has to be Storytime from their Imaginarium album. Has such a fun feel in it. Annettees new band The Dark Element is amazing
I'm so glad you're analysing Anette Olzon!!! I grew up right at that transition from Tarja to Anette, and while cherishing the old Nightwish sound, I also fell in love with what it became at that point. I'm really happy they have Floor Jansen now and she's an amazing fit. I saw them live with Anette towards the end of her time with the band and was disappointed by Anette's performance, where a later concert with Floor repaired my broken Nightwish heart haha - so definitely complicated feelings about the different singers, and love what Floor brings to Nightwish. Nonetheless, the albums with Anette have a big place in my heart, are definitely underrated, and I would love to see you dive more into her songs!!
I LOVE YOU! YOUR REACTION VIDEOS ARE AMAZING! I LOVE TO HEAR YOU TALK IN DETAIL AND EXPLAIN WHAT'S GOING ON AND APPRECIATE NOT ONLY THE MUSIC BUT ALSO THE LYRICS AND BAND! YOU'RE THE BEST! I LOVE YOUR SET UP AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND YOUR EVERYTHING YOU DO! YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL AND I LOVE YOUR FACE AND VOICE AND YOUR GORGEOUS SMILE! THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS!
Last of the Wilds is genuinely my favourite Nightwish song. It doesn't have any vocals though so it probably wouldn't be a great fit for this channel.
I think if the rotation of singers had been Tarja -> Floor -> Anette, Anette would have been received a lot better due to a more gradual change
edit: some words and errors
It is a REALLY good album, IMO. My intro do the band, as it happens.
@@StixDarKlor Man I think the same way, the 2 albums in Anette voice are the best for me
Each member of Nightwish has added depth to the band's catalog. Anette Olzon is no exception.
Anette is a very underrated vocalist, and I feel like she got a raw deal from her time in Nightwish - the band didn’t treat her well, and a lot of fans dismissed her talents. I think she sounds great on “Dark Passion” and especially “Imaginaerum.”
She did go to sing in a new band the dark element you should check it out she does a awesome singing with them😁👍🏻
Absolutely 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I do think it could have been handled better by Tuomas BUT he always wanted Floor and he pounced on it when he had the opportunity.
@@silverblack5475 I love Floor Jansen and think that she does a fine job with Nightwish's older material, but I haven't liked the new songs that she's been on.
@@aaronclift you no floor dont make the songs , but tuomas make the songs
I've been a Nightwish fan for just over 15 years and I love all three singers and the different aspects they've brought to the albums. So glad you're looking at one of her songs. Eva, Turn Loose the Mermaids and Meadows of Heaven also highlight her voice 😁
Yes!! Both songs you quoted are masterpieces with Anette! Agree with you.
Meadows is actually her song and she still do it.....
th-cam.com/video/hWaTutowjBU/w-d-xo.html
Turn Loose Mermaids agreed
Really sad they only ever did Meadows of Heaven live once I think. It was a big missed opportunity for her to shine on that song.
I think I read that the song Eva is the one that she sang fot the casting when Nightwish was looking for the new singer. That recording gave her the position of lead singer.
My favorite Anette's moment is definitely Slow Love Slow. It's 100% her song and she's shining in it.
Oh yeah. Great song.
Floor also killed it.
That one and Meadows of Heaven.
Totally agree. Slow love slow totally suits her style 👌
She did also very good job songs "Turn Loose The Mermaids" and I love "The Escapist" with her, and "Last Ride of the Day"
@@mayday6880 I'm still waiting for floor to cover escapist 😊
"Cadence of her last breath" is an absolutely wonderful song that Anette sings. I think you would totally dig it!
And seven days to the wolves!!
+1000 for Cadence, that song is incredible. Seven Days to the Wolves would honestly be worth a reaction with Anette and with Floor because they both have amazing takes on the song.
IIRC, this song was her audition piece to the band.
Yeah, that one was always the most interesting to me, from that banger album. I think it's their second best behind Once.
Perfect comment!!!
true. there is haughtiness which makes the songs sound crazy evil which i looove so much
Anette came in and took on the material on 'Dark Passion Play' and sang them like a champ. The album written in her voice 'Imaginaerum' was such a powerhouse record. Unfortunate way how it ended with Anette but the material she is doing these days is really good.
Oh she’s still singing? That’s great to hear! I heard she had retired from misic
I saw her live with the pink high heels too!! It was in Baltimore. She was great, they all were.
It was good in the studio version, unfortunately she didn't really handle the concerts. I've been there about 5 times and Anetta never once managed to sing the concert well. She can't compare to Tarja or Floor at all.
I must confess Imaginaerum is my favorite Nightwish album and I think Anette did an amazing job on this one.
mine too! i like floor and tarja on their own, but I think anette's brightness lightens nightwish too dark melodies. the darkness in imaginaerum feels deranged rather than epic/mysterious/sad and it makes it all the more fun
Imaginareum is definitely my favorite album hands down, mostly because of the theatrical tone.
please, please do more of Anette's era.
@@amaranthus4206 Me too. I feel that way about Anette's voice as well. Makes me happy.
@@LordTwinkusSame here.
The background of this music video is from a painting called "The Wounded Angel" by Finnish painter Hugo Simberg. If you look at the painting there is a frame in the music video which matched incredibly closely to the painting
The river scene also has a hint of "Lemminkäinen's mother" from Akseli Gallen-Kallela. I think this is all with purpose ... can we find more?
TO answer this question it would be wrong for the 2 other singers. They are all great in their own way.
Marko rocks, I think he is the most underrated Nightwish singer 😇 his Phantom of the Opera or Kiss While Your Lips are Stil Red are amazing 🖤
@@yp1851 I wouldn't say Marko is UNDERRATED. Everyone knows he kicks ass so hard
I think it is safe to say that it isn't Troy. Lol
The best song with Anette was definitely "Scaretale" and that you should analyze next!
100% Agree!! I think Floor is my favorite singer with nightwish, but Scaretale is one of the best songs of the band!
At 13:40 it sounds like Annette changes to the voice that she uses in Scaretale and continues through the next break.
Yes, Scaretale is her signature song. Sahara was another that I really loved too.
I’d highly recommend Scaretale, great vocals and a track I think you’d truly enjoy!
Scaretale is an amazing piece and Anette definitively shines on it!!!
Annette was a radical departure from Tarja. say what you want about her, the two albums they did with her were their best selling albums at the time. Some people were also not happy with how she left the band in the middle of the tour. another reactor said, "you never want to be the one that replaced the Legend."
Or get replaced by a " Legend "
I think ultimately if there was an "issue" with Anette, it was simply that she's a much better studio singer than a live singer, and that is not all that uncommon. She sounds great on their recordings but I've not been that impressed with the live clips I've heard, and I can't really fault her for that - I think it was an oversight during the selection of Tarja's replacement.
@@Timmayytoo tuomas wanted Floor after Tarja but she was very happy being in After Forever and tuomas didnt want to interfere with that .
@@Timmayytoo there's a show they did in Germany here on youtube go watch it and then you might reevaluate that .

Wow thanks so much for this information.
Oh I love The Crowl the Owl and the Dove!
Same!! Hers are also my favorites from the band.
(Both easily in top five for me.)
She was treated like crap by so many people and she took it on the chin like a absolute champ for five/six years.
5 vocalist in Nightwish? (Female vocalists)... Förlåt ... th-cam.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/w-d-xo.html
I think this is one of Anette's best songs. It's my favorite that she sings.
The thumbnail looks like the Official video ,which is based on a Finnish painting called 'The Wounded Angel'.
I love Slow Love Slow, too.
yes, made by Hugo Simberg.
Amaranth and Escapist for me..
Won a vote to be named Finland's "national painting" by the Ateneum art museum in 2006
At last, thank you.
That is probably because Imaginaerum was written with her voice in mind, while DPP was written before a vocalist was chosen
and Escapist, I love it th-cam.com/video/bwztc1iUSD8/w-d-xo.html
To me Annette grew as a vocalist in her time with Nightwish. Amaranth showed how good she already was, and Storytime showed her improvement with the band.
Yeah, Imaginaerum was much better for/on Anette. Using her range to write with, instead of forcing her into something else.
It's always a good day when Elizabeth analyses Nightwish 💙
Everything happened like a swing: 100% operatic with Tarja, extreme pop, clarity and transparency with Anette, a powerful balance between the two with Floor. Anette floats over the songs without amalgamating, in part due to her clear and transparent voice; which is a respectable style in itself. There are a lot of good NW songs with it, and also my all-time favorite NW: Scaretale.
Scaretale; yes!
Scaretale
@@aaronclift Interesting. I'll have to try and find that. Thanks for the info!
His last solo album is really good, I've enjoyed it a lot.
great suggestions, a little correction...it is "Isäni ääni" and I think it is just a smidge powerfull than english version, our language is of course more natural to sing.
This is the version of Nightwish i saw in concert, and imho Annette did a very fine job singing every song they played.
I hope you analyse something from Imaginaerum as well, it's where Anette really got to show her chops and it's an incredible album all around.
Not saying you had bias, but myself and many others do 😅
Escapist is SO underrated!
I wonder where is "Scaretale"? That is the best one with Anette... She really sounds like a witch in that!
Totally agree with you!
And i like your reaction, but i always like your NW reactions!
yea Scaretale is fire for sure! Get a lot more of the creepy/snarly bits of her voice in there.
@@happydude2163 Marco has said singing with Floor is the first time he didn’t have to hold back….
Her other band The Dark Element is amazing too I'm not sure which songs to recommend but maybe 'The Pallbearer Walks Alone' 'Last Good Day' 'Pills on my Pillow' 'Heres To You' 'Someone You Used To Know'
That's a lot of songs I know but I'm not sure which is my favorite because they're all so good.
Concur with Meadows of Heaven, truly awesome song!
The bridge of Amaranth is my favorite part, I rewound that more times than I care to count 😅
Sahara is such an underrated song!
oh my GOD I can't wait for this one!!!!
I recommend:

this one is really calm, very jazzy like, it doesn's seem like a Nightwish song at all, but it is. This one belongs to the second album with Anette.
-Planet Hell - Live at Montreaux Jazz Festival (2012)
th-cam.com/video/KL-6Io1nskw/w-d-xo.html
Here she gives everything she has.
Consider helping with a like if you wanna show your support to my suggestions
🙏🙏 🙏🙏 🙏🙏 🙏🙏
I really like Anette on Sleeping Sun (Rock Werchter 2008) for the belting, the somewhat ballad-like feel, and some cool high notes.
@@lurker1316 I totally agree with you
Wow, I've always thought that Anette was "better" at harmonizing with herself than the other two ladies, but never knew why. Great insight!
You keyed into all of my favorite parts of this song and reasons for why they are so. Really enjoy your videos.
I always thought Anette was underappreciated... her music is fun it might not be as technically impressive as the other vocalists but I find it really enjoyable all the same.
Thank you for the introduction to this. I have never heard of this band. I think they are absolutely wonderful! Well done on the analysis.
Nightwish is a challenging band, (we) the fans always expect nothing but greatness, that is the reason I truly I admire so much all 3 front singers, and will always forever be grateful for what they have bring to the band all these years.
would love to see a breakdown of a Leave's Eyes song, specifically a Liv Kristine song.
I would love to see that. Any song suggestions? Legend Land and Solemn Sea come to mind for me.
@@oglschmitt Elegy
I miss old Leaves Eyes so much. I only got to see them once live. But they didn’t do great job of building a fan base. Tons of line up changes. Not much touring. North and South American tours canceled because of bad management. Vineland soga was an absolute masterpiece, no reason they couldn’t have been peers of Epica and Nightwish.
@@christophersims3319 I miss them as well. I got to see them live on tour with Kamelot. They put on an awesome show!
@@oglschmitt The Secret I think its the most special, but also like The thorn, Temptation, For Amelie and Into Your Light, among others
A fews years back, Anette made an album with Russell Allen. You know, the Symphony X frontman that you *still* haven't checked out 😁
She is in a band with Ex-sonata arctica guitarist Jani Liimatainen called The Dark Element. They have two albums out.
I would love to see your reaction of the band "Soen" you can check their most popular songs, Like lotus, lucidity, illusion, martyrs, such an underrated band with an amazing vocalist
Her brightness in her voice is just amazing. And she sings very well live also, no matter what some people say
Also his solo record is a soundtrack. To a craphic novel.
Tuomas didn't compose the music for the movie Imaginaerum, another composer (Petri Alanko) took Tuomas songs and give them a cinematic/score style for the film.
@@FelipeSaintJeanOfficial More like new arrangements not composing.
@@lekalla sure, composed the arrangements for the film, based on the album Imaginaerum, or as they called "music reinterpreted".
The ghost and the Reaper is a bonofide classic.
Dark Passion Play is my favorite Nightwish album. I love Annette voice it wasn't way over the top it just had a great flow.
I really like Anette's voice in the original studio version of Poet and the Pendulum. That recording made *very* heavy use of back vocals, which I thought were done well to better emphasize emotions. Oh, and her growl on the last "cold world" lyric in the song was epic!
Elizabeth, what ever happened to that Symphony X review you were asking us about which song to pick? Still looking forward to it..
I love that you did an analysis of Anettes voice! Thank you :)
You're welcome! ❤️
You should definetly check out Ghost River and Storytime when Anette sings it. Magnificent choices were made into that album. Anette was totally different than Tarja, so Tuomas had to write the album with creativity and this made it one of their best albums
the sucess of that album had little to nothing to do with Anette but more so due to lyrical and compositional content
@@Pufferzsola interesting how just about every Anette song is so much more popular with Floor's vocals.
Love your short analysis on the three singers. Always wanted to her someone else put into perspective and you did it well.
Super underrated Nightwish Era.
Other reacts we desperately need:
Trivium: In the Shadow of the Abbitor
Kilswitch Engage: Holy Diver
Double Feature - Megadeth: A Tout le Monde immediately followed by the Set Me Free version with Christina Scabbia
Megadeth: Sweating Bullets
Anything Shinedown
So much more metal \m/
Ohmygod YES TRIVIUM. She's going to lose her mind with any song from In the court of the dragon lmao
I support Killswitch Engage as well ❤
Anything shinedown except the live performances where he had started miming :(
used to be one of my favourite bands but I lost so much respect for them after seeing that.
Love all your reactions ❣️
Hopping to see your next video!
Exactly.
Excellent analysis! One of their best songs ever!!!!!!!
Annette Sings Wonderful!! Glad she got a Chance to Sing in Nightwish!!
Nightwish has been blessed with 3 amazing singers. I love all three
I don't understand how anyone can consider Anette "amazing" and include her in the same category as either Floor or Tarja.
Annette is average at best
Honestly, my favorite albums by NW are Oceanborn and Imaginaerum. Both masterclasses of symphonic metal. Both operatic and in rock vocals.
I really like the depth of your analysis and your reactions.
Annette is still rocking in her new band The Dark Element. They have some awesome songs.
Glad you were able to meet my favorite Nightwish singer. Anette has a new band, The Dark Element, love their song My Sweet Mystery.
Anette ❤️ please do more of her. "Slow love Slow" is a great one (jazzy Nightwish).
It would be great If you would do Something from her new band The dark element or something from her solo Album!
It’s incredible that every singer brings something unique to the band and make their songs their own
I hope to one day see a reaction from Elizabeth to Delain ''We are the others'' Either the classic version or the new ballad version. Both are great and the message is amazing.
Yes, she'll love Delain, but that song is h e a v y (emotionally)
@@jezusbloodie Aye, I agree, Stardust is amazing too for example. the reason why I voted for ''We are the others'' is te special place it has in my heart
@@snowfire888 same, tho
Would love to see Delain. I do love We Are The Others, but I would vote for Masters of Destiny, which put Delain on my radar.
I also love We Are The Others. Great song, great video. A heavy topic, yes, but one that particularly resonates with many.
I was lucky enough to see Delain and Sabaton open for Nightwish. Such an amazing show.
This is the song that got me into Nightwish.
Staying with Annette, a "Meadows of Heaven" reaction would be good...(Album version)
I agree beautiful song
The difference in Nightwish vocalists proivided excellent examples for Elizabeth to discuss vocal techniques. Fascinating!
I wasn't able to make the premiere, but just wanted to say this is my favorite Nightwish song, It always sounded like a dark fairy tale to me
