    Man this is so reassuring. My wife and I just brought a 9 week old Doxie into our family of 5 this weekend, I can already see how stubborn he is! I considered the possiblilty that maybe he's deaf, but when he hears that treat bag opening up his lil tail gets to wagging and his hearing and attention span improves instantly!

    I realise now - after watching your video - that you need real patience with Dachshunds, especially wirehaired. My problem was I was giving up too easy. Now training her on a tight leash with a real emphasis on 'focus'. Baby steps - but 'steps' nonetheless. She now understands that 'communication' is rewarded with treats. Thank you Kaelin

    Dear Kaelin,
    We have a dachshund since a few month now, and we love to teach her tricks (and I think she loves it to :D).
    She learned so many in such short time, I'm amazed!
    BUT I didn't know how to teach her how to lay down. All the videos to explain it were with big dogs, so they ask the dog to sit and then put the treat near the floor: the dog have to lay to eat the treat.
    But a dachsund have paws so short and a nose so long, she could reach the treat only by standing! How would I be able to teach here how to lay?!?!
    And then I watched your video (this one). And followed your advised. The first time my dog layed down was after 45 minutes. The next, 20 minutes. And the next after that, less than 5 minutes. She got it!
    This morning we tried again, and here we go, she got it, next trick now! ^^
    My goal is to teach here to roll on the floor.
    Thank you so much to share your knoledge on the internet!

    I have a stubborn boy dachshund I put him on a harness and leash with bungee ! He literally runs in place and pulls and barks constantly wanting to go meet people he’s 7 months and I want to take him to obedience classes and puppy play day! He also has the submission pee and it’s not near as pleasant to keep up with everything!!! Same temperament as your trainee!! I’ve been told getting him neutered it would help, we had good training going on until his balls dropped and he went wild! I bought a brand new bed and kennel and he won’t even acknowledge it!! He is a big barker !! I have had other dogs and still have a 12 year old hound pit mix dog and I’ve never had this much trouble training them to listen, calm down , stop him from lifting his leg on objects indoors! He also has separation anxiety really bad! I want him to be happy and well behaved but method isn’t working so maybe classes will show me what and how it needs to be done with him to let me reinforce it at home!! So it’s not so stressful for me as well as him because he doesn’t understand why he can’t run where he wants , or go up and greet everyone he sees , so he constantly barks the same bark for attention, awareness, ect and when a dog rather little or big comes running at you barking the first thing people think is aggression and he is so friendly just doesn’t know how to react to neighbors he sees, people we meet on beach ect

    • @redmaidenart5582
      @redmaidenart5582 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wendysutheard5132 it's simply about patience and perseverance. You need to basically be more stubborn than the dog. Regardless of if its cold, wet, hot, whatever, your dog needs to understand that it's only option is to relieve itself outside. Do this by teaching it a basic command like "do wees" or whatever you use, take it outside every 2 hours at least, wait 10-15 minutes, as soon as it pees even just a little praise and give treat and clicker sound. This is really important as it connects with the synapses and establishes the good behaviour. Keep working at it and make sure that you take your dog as much as you can; after food, before bed, after play, during play, whenever you think they're more likely to do the dirty in the house. Keep at it and perservere. It'll get there.

    A Dachshund who is stubborn? That's a bit redundant! LMAO I'm in my 50 yrs on this earth, I have always had a Doxie or three in my life and stubborn is the breed standard. If they are food motivated you are golden but if they are so, so on food....best of luck to ya! Still ADORE the breed, especially the standards as they are easier to train.

    Chews on everything
    Poes where he pleases
    Barks nonstop lol
    The only good thing is that he won't pee in the car even on road trips.
    He's spoiled asf but is kept as an outdoor dog.
    Treats don't get his attention. Only very loud squeaky toys

    • @dharmitasavla6060
      @dharmitasavla6060 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dachshunds are stubborn :)
      With the chewing - teach him what he can chew and what times he can have his toys. When you leave him alone for example, give him a frozen treat that will take a few hours to get to, great for tiring your dog out and saving your house from destruction. Barking is a tough one with dachshunds but again training and persistence is the way to go. Misdirection is a good trick.
      Potty training for me is the simplest, you just need to keep an eye on them at all times. If they start showing signs, get them outside and wait outside with them until they do their business. Celebrate and treat your dog for correct behaviours so that they want to do it again!
      Doxies are very focused when doing something (other than listening lol), so it takes a lot to break their attention of a squirrel for example. Try using really high reward treats to teach “look at me” and other commands so that eventually you can use them outside.
      Good luck!

      Realistically, as soon as the puppy is home with you, start basics rightaway. I don't believe in waiting and when they're young and their brains are developing, it's easier and generally faster to get them to form the good habits you do want like peeing outside, sitting, crating, etc. The longer you leave it, the harder it's going to be.
