      This not even close to what what WotC used to do at sanctioned official RPG events. They had Tournament Modules that were specifically designed to kill as many player characters as possible. Kind of like Hardcore Mode in today's video games like Diablo 3 and such. This "meat grinder" rule is lame. Even AD&D was tougher on deaths than this. It didn't even have death saves.

    • @rc7771
      @rc7771 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's what the game is now, and believe it or not, it actually works well in play. Give it a try before you nay say it. And, in a home game, most of the rules are optional anyway, so you can get rid of death saves if you want to.

      I got the chance to playtest a 4th edition "Hard Mode" module many years ago with him as the DM. We got TPKed. He signed my Player's Handbook and the pregen character sheet and was really awesome to talk to about D&D and other things.

    Im having trouble picturing this melee where 12 cyclopes are attacking a clustered party of heroes, but all these 30',40' and 80' cones and cubes of effect only ever target 2 enemies at a time. I cant help but think with minis or some sort of battle map itd be almost certain the players would be able to target more, especially using their movements to angle, flank, and fall back to maximize the amount targeted

      I understand. I was taught to be generous with attacking multiple creatures at once. I think his justification was, it's Giants. But maybe he made a mistake forgetting the larger scale of the spells should be considered.

    Didn't Chris say that the orb continued rolling and fell from the pinacle to the other side of the half orc cleric meaning that the entirity of the last 40 minutes couldn't happen as all of the new players would have appeared below with the half orc cleric? At 1:06 they state the dragonborn missed and that the cyclopes clapped then awwed that the orb rolled off and the cleric asked if he saw it so how did the cyclopes suddenly have the orb ready and waiting in their fingers when the new cleric arrived thus stopping him from healing the downed players?

    This is a showcase of the meatgrinder rule in the tomb of Annihilation. But a better way to do this sort of thing is to charge the PC with the damage they took. Anything puts them at below -10 means they are dead before they hit the ground. No save. If they are above -10 but below 0 they have that many rounds to be healed before they die. So if you took a hit that put you at -6 hp
    you have 4 rounds before you die. If someone can not get to you and heal you your dead. No save needed.

      Dragonborn can have any draconic heritage.
      Despite being called "Dragonborn" they aren't directly connected to dragons.
      Dragonborn in turn can have any colours and any breathweapons;
      in fact, a Dragonborn being a "pure colour" like dragons is rare,
      most Dragonborn are "off-colour" with brownish reds, greyish blues, yellowish greens and-so-forth.
      So a Dragonborn of one colour having heritage of another is not strange at all.

I know it's supposed to be unwinnable, but I would have liked to see some attack plan variance.

  • @wmpaul128
    @wmpaul128 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    They were loose with the situational awareness. One cyclops had headed back down. One was in a Sleet storm. one elbow dropped and was then prone. The sleet storm should have affected attacks across the area. The players need to track monster placements better. What happens without at least a sketch with iccons to keep track.

    Not to be "that guy", but the half-orc cleric shouldn't have survived that fall. "Relentless Endurance: When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead." 120 would have brought him past negative hit points.

    • @SheriffEvans
      @SheriffEvans 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I know Perkins was juggling a lot of balls in this, it felt more like the half orc cleric player was twisting the intention of the rules and just snuck one past him. Shatter felt more like an honest mistake.

    Man, these players seem determined not to work together. I don't really feel that bad for them. Group up, protect the casters behind meat shields. and focus fire. I know that this was supposed to demonstrate how hard the meat grinder rules can be, but it really just showed how quickly players go down if they don't work together.
    Meat grinder sounds like a big deal, but it's not. If you let somebody take 3 death saving throws before healing them, your party is awful. Usually when characters die in 5E it's either because someone rolled a nat 1 on a death saving throw, or because the creatures decided to autocrit a character that is already down. Either that or a TPK. So 10 or 15 for the DC of the death saving throw really doesn't make a difference.

    Death saves on a 15 is barely a difference in D&D. I bet not a single person dies to failed saving throws without either rolling a 1 or getting hit while they are down. 3 rounds (or more) of being dying on the ground without getting a heal is very rare. Especially with a medium level party that has access to healing word.

      other then this being a 1 shot pick up game on short notice. I could only take a guess and say its because the players picked classes they were not already familiar with rather than going with one they actually knew something about.

    Archfey Warlock, take the Eye, use Misty Escape and don't attack or cast another spell. Invisible for the whole game. Winrar.
    Of course Perkins would still kill everyone anyway haha.

    damn meat grinder mode is the hardcore dnd insane mode
    more exp more bonus loot drop and more chances getting killed in battle so u can go rage quit and death save is harder making u stay alive roll 15 or better and worst if u roll 1 on death save automatic 2 strikes on failed death save so brutal and so savage

      Not really, the only reason players were dropping here was that A) they were outnumbered 2-1 by enemies that could likely solo a player each in opportune circumstances, B) the players did not work together well while the enemies did, and C) the players were prevented from healing by an artifact.
      In normal circumstances, players would drop, likely fail one death save, and then be popped back up by a cleric since there are no negative hp. Not really that much different than how normal death save scenarios unfold. Just adding negative hp into the game makes for much more of a challenge than bumping up a saving throw that's hardly ever used by 5.

    The secret to Chris' legendary DM skills isn't his ability to tie together the story in a believable fashion, it isn't the ability to describe everything that happens really well, it isn't his great ability to turn the players into the stars of the show.
    It's his grin.

    I just started playing for the first time ever, but with coworkers last year. Our DM doesn't give us an intro, but adds to story as we play. Explains why my fmr coworkers put us in such bullshit scenes of Do You WANT Us To Die?! WHY Do We Have To Go THERE?!?! I mean, its frustrating, but funny, so 💁
