    As a very proud Canadian, of Irish ancestry somewhere back there, I found this fun. And they picked a couple of very divisive Canadian snack to start. Big Turk, and Cheezies are things that Canadians either love, or loathe. Mackintosh's are the thing that everyone has all the time. There's a handful in the bottom every every old ladies' purse that no one ever knows how they got there. Then there is Hickory Sticks. Everyone loves Hickory Sticks.

    I am from Canada and Big Turk was one of my dad's favourites - I can't stand it. Hawkins Cheezies are a national treasure and we are PROUD they are not puffy like Cheetos (but they are an acquired taste, lol). McIntosh's used to come in a bar shape that you rapped on the counter or table to break it into shards that would fit in your mouth - the individually wrapped ones I don't find nearly as good. Hickory Stix were my favourites to have after a night at the bar.

    Growing up the MackIntosh caramel came in a rectangle bar shape that was about 5cm x 10cm and pulled nearly every filling from your head when eating it. Generally took about an hour or two to eat, so when my mother wanted to shut me up for a while it was a cheap investment for her, none of this convenient individually wrapped stuff. A lot of folks also take the Hickory Sticks and put them on a hamburger / cheeseburger, especially when you Bar-B-Que. Hawkins Cheezies are a truly Canadian classic that is either loved or hated as is true with Big Turk. I love Cheezies and cannot stand Big Turk. Y'all just took me back 40 years to my childhood.

    The best way to eat MacKintosh's Toffee is to just let it dissolve in your mouth, or add a piece to your coffee. I never liked Big Turks, mostly because I don't like Nestle chocolate. Hickory Sticks and Cheezies are staples of every birthday party before my teens. Still like both, but I prefer just putting Hickory Sticks on a burger, they're easier to eat that way.
    One of my friends growing up actually did lose a filling to a piece from a Mac toffee bar; freaked all of us out for a while, but we didn't stop eating them. That's how good they are.

These were much to large to fit in your mouth (certainly not individually wrapped bite size pieces), and trying to bite off a piece was dangerous (you could lose a filling or maybe a tooth), but they sure tasted good...

      The recipe of the Mackintosh bars must have changed sometime in the 90's. I remember as a kid in the 80's, just smaking the whole thing against the concrete floor of the basement to break it into pieces. Later on you actually had to chill it in the freezer before you couls do that. Hickory Sticks however are still my favourite. I eat 'em one by one, and the only snack that I share with no one. :)

    Good to see some mainstream Canadian snacks... usually its the weird stuff from the food/snack aisle London Drugs or Shoppers that makes it on here.
    Big Turk: I don't like it... to me its like eating licorice and chocolate at the same time
    Cheezies: one of my favorite snacks. I like the strong cheese flavor
    Mackintosh's Toffee: I let them melt in my mouth and don't really chew them. Thats why I prefer the bar: you can put it in the fridge and then slap it on the counter when its hard and it breaks up in to small chunks
    Hickory Sticks: I like them, like the flavor... but sometimes they can come across as too salty

  • @petemcfeet28
    @petemcfeet28 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    As a Canadian, speaking on behalf of every single Canadian, you should know that Big Turks are only eaten after snowmobiling or splitting wood. Cheezies can be eaten either before or after skating on a pond or piling wood. Macintosh toffees are meant only as a reward from either starting the fire or winning your hockey game or at least winning your fight in a losing game and hickory sticks are to be enjoyed at anytime and are quite often crumbled into other meals or snacks to provide flavour and crunchiness like crackers in soup, croutons in salads or bread crumbs in a meatball.
    Cheers.

  • @paranoidrodent
    @paranoidrodent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Given the remarks made by the Try team, it sounds like the snack package had a chance to go stale in transit. Several of those have light-duty packaging and are really underwhelming if you get a past date package. Hawkins’ Cheezies are heavier on the corn flavour than the comparable Cheetos product (makes them better with a beer but more bland solo). Macintosh toffee is premium filling extractor (you can chew it for ages, especially if it isn’t stale). Hickory Sticks should not taste stale at all but they can get a little overwhelming in flavour if you binge on them. Big Turk is like the Filet-O-Fish of Canadian candy aisles. It’s always on the menu but you never see anyone actually get one. Turkish delight is not particularly popular in Canada (although yeah, Big Turk is a mediocre but large portioned form).

  • @MatchBookNotes

    big turk was an old people bar when i was a child in the early 90ies... decorative soap is fookin right. the toffee fits in that too.
