Personally I like the studio version of this better. The sound quality of this live performance doesn't do it justice. Great reaction though. Boston was/is a fantastic band with some very memorable tunes.
@@stevedahlberg8680 I long for those ticket prices again. Used to get 3 bands for under $10.00. Always General Admission but I was much younger then and didn’t mind waiting in line for hours, racing the rest of the crowd for the front row and then standing for hours watching the show. Back then, it’s what you did and it was worth every minute!
The studio versions capture their voices at their best. You cannot compare even though their live performances are so good. “Man I’ll never be” is, by far my favorite Boston song. It is beautiful, melodic and shines like a bright light.
on the album, the only voice you'll hear is brad delp's. he sang all of the parts. and his voice wasn't trashed by touring. one of the best rock vocal performances ever.
You gotta do the album version. The production is stellar and you will really hear how good of a singer Brad Delp was. He does his own harmony vocals. The album was released in 1976.Please check out the entire debut album.
Their debut album is a masterpiece. Every song on it , including these two , were played on the radio. React to the debut album one track at i time , in order. You will be impressed. Its in the top 3 best selling debut albums in history.
All Tom Scholz band....1st albums made in his basement studio while he worked as an engineer at Polaroid....Scholz was playing the organ and a little guitar there....plays many of the leads in most songs along with 2nd guitarists Barry Goudreau.....On the 1st album Scholz played everything except drums and vocals.....band was assembled to play live.....Brad Delp was an AMAZING singer...passed away in the early 2000's when he couldn't escape his demons......Boston still tours every other year or so but with all different members except Scholz.....watch the videos of Scholz's story.......
Boston, Journey, Styx, Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and dozens more bands!... The mid to late 70s was an amazing time to be a teenager...FOR THE MUSIC!!! Lead singer's voice is very strained in this version. The end of the concert is a hard time for singers. And all this was a decade after the "hippy" period opened the door to sounds and ideas that gave us the music of the 70s and heading into the rockin 80s! Ahh, driving with Boston! Me and brother would hit the PA turnpike, which was close to where we lived, listening to the A side of Boston's first album. Then we'd get off turn around listening to the B side. Finally heading to the bar to meet our friends to dring beers and watch hockey. Now, what we were "doing" each direction on the PA turnpike is....not a topic we could "legally" have spoken about.....back then (nudge and a wink).
As has been mentioned, Tom Schultz was an MIT educated engineer and wrote the lyrics and recorded all of the instrumental parts in his home built sound studio in his basement. He battled with the record label and band members a lot. In my opinion, he really just wanted go back and continue to come up with perfect songs and sounds in his basement but they were overnight sensations.
A lot of trivia involving Boston. Saw them in 78 I think. Of course, mind blown. No tracks, autotune. Imperfect live stuff. Miss it. Miss the live freedom. Spontaneous creativity. 😢
I'm glad the live performance was captured for people to listen to and enjoy but it in no way shows how great Brad Delp's voice really was. Listening to the studio album is an absolute must, the production values along with the vocals are tight, polished, simply phenomenal. The album came out when I was in high school and today remains one of my all time favorite recordings.
Boston was the first band I ever saw in concert. It was the fall of 1978 and three college buddies and I drove 70 miles to Minneapolis to see them. Sammy Hagar, whom I had not heard of at that time, warmed up for them and put on a good show. But when Boston opened up with "Rock And Roll Band", the place went crazy. That song is kind of the story about their rise to fame and would make a great reaction song as well.
Was at the same tour in Toronto, and Hagar went off that night. He did a 11 minute version of "Red", and blew the doors off the place, then followed it with Bad Motor Scooter. He was known up here in Canada. Boston had to work that night, and just didn't bring it that night. I think Hagar threw them off that night. Saw Boston later in the year and they were on then though.
The drummer Sib Hasian was a friend and neighbor of mine. Great guy. I remember him getting the money after the first album and driving around in a new lime green Mercedes Benz SL. :-) Sadly he died a few years back while playing on a cruise ship. Great drummer. Heard him practicing every day in his house.
I grew up listening to Boston! Imagine being a kid in the 80’s, riding in her uncles black TransAm, windows down, Boston blaring… that was my childhood. ❤
Yes! Brings back so many great memories! I remember when I finally got a car with a cassette player and this was one of the main tapes I listened to. Cruising town and blasting Boston was such a great feeling!
SEBS: I am having a blast watching you discover the bands of my youth and that have been with me for 50 years... I think that they are that good that they will be with you too in 50 years time... Keep on Rocking.
I prefer the studio version to this because it is so much cleaner. Nearly every teenager that I knew had Boston's debut album in one form or another. It was the first 8 track I ever bought - then the first album I ever bought - then the first cassette I ever bought. Later to keep up the tradition it was also my first CD and first digital download.
Oh boy, this is going to be such a fantastic journey. I swear this is one of my favorite bands back in the day. I was only lucky enough to see them when they produce their third album after many years of a break after their second, but I saw them three times on that tour and it was fantastic. Those first two albums are just historic. The third album was I thought pretty darn good as well. I didn't realize they actually went on and produced several albums after that, but at least something for me to look forward to
In high school, when I wanted an album, I had to make 2 purchases. The first was the actual vinyl album to get the cover art. The second was the 8-track to play in my car. Also, check out the studio version when you get the chance. It's better.
I’m with ya. Had the infamous Learjet under dash wired to Jensen speakers. Everything was DIY back then and some were better than others at this. Always loved the 6x9’s just sitting on the back shelf with no cabinet or anything. Quick stops sent them flying into your rear passenger’s heads. It’s no wonder we have dain bramage :)
@@Snakebite351 I remember having to steal a couple of my mom's dishtowels to stuff under the speakers to dampen the rattling. I went high end. My speakers were screwed into the door panels. We had to be careful not to pull the wires out when opening the doors. Those were the days. I won't even go into having another track playing in the background of the main track I was listening to. LOL
The guy playing keyboards in this performance is Tom Scholz. He wrote all the songs and played all keyboards, guitars, and bass on the albums. He hired a drummer and singer (Brad Delp) for the album, and a full band for touring. Many live songs you can see him playing guitar, but I guess the keyboards were such a huge part of this song that he stuck to them for this performance.
@controlfreak3587 Not quite Tom did not write all of the songs on this record. Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home and he co wrote smokin, Including the two drummers there is a total of 5 musicians who play at least one instrument track on this record. Barry plays nearly all of the electric guitar parts on Foreplay and Long Time. The guitar solo on Long Time is definitely Barry and not Tom, Tom does not have the ability to play those legato phrases and Tom can not play as fast as Barry can. Fran is playing bass on Foreplay. Fran was a very established bass player by the time the Boston record was made. Brad plays acoustic 12 string on Let Me Take You Home. Then there is the fact that the band as pictured on the back of the record did in fact exist before the record was released and before any tour was planned, The band as pictured on the back of the record recorded 3 songs at The Record Plant LA for the record. However, only Let Me Take You Home made it to the record. The claim that there was no band until after the record was finished and that they were only hired to pull of the tour is fiction. Your claims about Brad while likely made out of ignorance really disrespect Brad, and they diminish how much Brad's talent played in Boston getting signed, and we have Tom to thank for people diminishing Brads role in this record because of how Tom obfuscates the truth many times when he does interviews about this record. The legal records are very clear about this as was Boylan. Brad signed the record deal as a member of Boston just like Tom did. Brad was NOT a hired gun. Brad voice was a big help in Tom getting the record deal. Boylan recognized very quickly that Brad was a top rung world class singer. Without Brad, Tom may not have even got the record deal. Brads' voice was that important to Epic because Brad had a once in a generation voice with loads of God given talent. Boylan spoke very highly of Brad and how easy he sang and made all of those vocals and harmonies work as we hear them on the record today, Please out of respect for Brad stop saying that Brad was only a hired gun. Brad deserves better than that, and Tom is an asshole for not setting the record straight in every interview he gave and in the documentaries that were done regarding Brad being a full on member of Boston from the minute that both Tom and Brad signed with Epic.
Lots of people love the live version of rock bands, but it’s because they have listened to the studio version at least a thousand times and THEY enjoy watching them live because thier ears are already used to the studio versions so they don’t mind the variances of instruments that are done with an alternate way of playing. Always get introduced to a new artist through the studio before watching them live. The ONLY artist that is the exception to that rule is Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I was at that show, 😂Giants stadium, 1979. The bill was Poco, Todd Rundgren, The Outlaws, and Boston. It poured in the middle of the afternoon during Rundgren's set if I recall correctly. My friends and I were in the upper deck and got soaked but it being a hot day (and being young) we didn't mind.
In this live performance, Barry played (most of) the guitar - except for the “Tom Morello” 😂 bits. Tom Scholz played the organ except for the space-y section, you can see Brad switch onto the organ at 3:56 and Tom pop out briefly, then they switch back once “Long Time” starts at 5:43. Tom wrote, performed, and recorded all the guitar/bass parts on the studio track. Barry played Tom’s original parts pretty faithfully here.
@750ml Not quite. On the record, Barry plays all of the electric rhythm guitar parts on Foreplay and Long Time. In addition Barry plays all of the lead guitar solos on Long Time on Long time as well as the huge power chords Barry plays those parts faitufl beacuse he was the man who played them in teh studio for the record, Tom was forced to admit that Barry plays on these songs under oath in legal documents pertaining to the Scholz vs Goodreu law suit
Man you just brought back some mighty fine memories 😅. When I was not even 15 years old my first concert was Boston and Kiss at the Macon Coliseum in Ga. They had just put out the spaceship upside down guitar album. It was great!!!
Just came across your channel. Really enjoy the authenticity you display. Your love of great musicianship is infectious. So appreciate your insight and passion. Super glad to have found your show!
that entire album is pure fire. I'll never forget the first time I popped the 8-track in and put on my headphones and listened to it for the first time
IMO, the studio recording is a little more precise, a bit more full sounding, while this performance is a little on the thin side. But it's great to see the people performing. The main guy on the organ - Tom, who also plays guitar - is basically "Boston," and Brad, the singer, has a special voice. All of the other performers were brought on to do the live shows. Very unusual band construction. To me, Boston and Journey are bands that are kind of like in the breadbasket of rock. Not that they're my favorites, but they're undeniably great, and their sound is just ... in the middle of it all. If you want to know what classic rock is, listen to them.
Just in case you don't know, their first album went straight to number 1. The album cover alone should tell you it is something special, and this way in the 70's. we set the path to sex, love and rock n' roll. More Than A Feeling is one of my favorites. So glad you enjoyed it.
It was fun seeing them live back in the day, but the studio versions kick butt over this sort of live version. As someone mentioned before, this entire album is like a greatest hits record.
I've been listening to Boston since the started. I have seen very few live videos, and never saw them in concert. Crazy how Tom Scholz (playing organ in this video) usually gets the "guitar god" credit, but this rhythm player, Barry Goudreau, has been killing it! Did not know he was this good. Great video!!
Barry played all electric rhythm guitar tracks on Foreplay and Long Time on the record Barry also played all of the lead guitar solos on Long Time on the record. The huge power chords on Long Time are Barry as well. The reason why Barry plays these two songs so well is because he played them on the actual record.
Just started watching this channel. I like how enthusiastic Sebs gets hearing the old 70's bands I grew up with. How do you put in suggestions for other bands to check out?
Never saw you before although I’m a fan of reaction videos. You had me at “Boston”…I’m just wondering why someone would suggest the live version? This epic classic needs to be appreciated on the studio version. Freebies and anything by Peter Frampton, yes cue the live versions but not Boston…much of the genius was in their engineering as well as the music!
Saw them in 1979 and 2001. Had the 8 track, album, cassette and CD. My fav band ever. I’m 62 and still head bang to them. Smokin’ is my second fav after Peace of Mind. RIP Brad, there are 3 people I want to meet if/when I get to heaven, my son, my dad and Brad Delp.
Saw them here in St Louis after the release of their first album. Did not dissapoint. The bonus was that this guy I had never heard of was the warm up group - Stevie Ray Vaughn.
I was blessed to play on Boston's bass Amp. The guitarist in our band is related to Tom Scholtz. I got the news when they were breaking up getting back together, etc.
😂 Not the Immigrant card! Well im so glad you FINALLY got to experience BOSTON!! This song is a MASTERPIECE! Boston ROCKS, such great music. Great review! We who grew up in the 70's & 80's, were SO blessed, with these GREAT musicians. We rocked with the BEST! No autotune, no bs, just pure-great-talent! ☺️
I can listen to their first album straight through 3 times over and still want to listen a 4th time. My personal favorite song out of ALL of their songs is "Hollyann, " from the Third Stage album. Boston is what I refer to as a "Bridge Band." It took the best of the late 60s and early 70s and introduced hard rocking 80s to the late 70s masses. Truly AMAZING band...
Also here: If you love this, put it in some hotlist with the studio version. Which - by the way - is not only the best Boston song, but one of the overall TOP 10 Songs of all time!! Regardless of any musical style or genre. Really, this contains some of the best moments in musical history ever. And not only is he one of the best singers ever (period), but all of them are just pure dope in what they're doing.
Sorry I missed this show. It took place at Giants stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey about an hour north of me. Unfortunately I was at Camp Lejeune then.
Fantastic band. And folks, I understand why he does live versions - even if it's rough, it's real- no auto-tune. Talent shines its own light, naturally. ✌️❤️
Need to do some Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, best rock band ever imo, REFUGEE is a good one to start…dude had over 40 hits and the songs that weren’t hits were even better, killer blues/rock, little bit of country up until his death at 66
A very important thing to know is that this album, released in 1976, was the first shot fired over the bow of disco. After two years of nothing but that, sitting down at a party and putting this album on the turntable was a breath of fresh rock air.
This was one of those songs that you rolled down the car windows, took the t-tops off, got on the highway cranked up the volume and jammed the whole way down the road. Oh to be a teenager again.
A couple of the, many, great things about these artists are the musicianship you mentioned, and they didn’t rely on things like autotune to sound right. They had to be able to actually sing anytime, anywhere. That means even if they're high, which they often were. So was the audience. LOL One thing I like is that songs had verses, a chorus, and a bridge. And songs didn’t need 20 people to write them. It often took only one or two people to write a song.
My brothers have been rocking together since pretty much their whole life. They are still putting out music and they are 63 and 64 years old. Our cousin is the drummer in the band. The other two band members are lifelong friends of my brothers. Needless to say when I say they know how to rock, they rock. They also went, like I did, to a lot of live concerts. The studio LP sounds so much better. Boston was not as good live as they were in the studio. I have been to my brothers; concerts and believe me, you hear their songs, they sound like that in person as they do on their cds and other modes of music compositions. They have stuck with the same people because their harmonies are insanely good. Helps three of them are related and the other two were playing with them since 17 and 18. This bums me to say out about Boston, but it really is true. If you go listen to the studio version, you will see a major difference
My number one band . They had it all . Lead singer , back up vocals , musicianship , and Tom Scholz ! You need to read up on the formation of the band and learn a little bit about Tom and what he did !!!
The sound effects in foreplay were done by Tom Scholz on guitar with a modified effects pedal. Tom is an MIT engineer. Great musician and heck of an engineer.
Personally I like the studio version of this better. The sound quality of this live performance doesn't do it justice. Great reaction though. Boston was/is a fantastic band with some very memorable tunes.
I agree.
I’ve seen Boston “Live” a handful of times including in Boston once, and sadly they were never really good “Live”. Just always seemed off key!
I saw them live in 1977 in a small indoor arena and it was fantastic. It sounded so good!

@@neechee5150 Great info, thanks!
Yes!!!!❤❤❤ Please do Feelin Satisfied..and all of Boston
Definitely check out
Boston
Smokin
Rock and Roll Band
Such a great band ! We all miss you Bradley and Sib.
Bosto came into the rock scene like a comet!!!! They took over immediately! Awesome!
This is my hands down number one Favorite Band of all Time!
OH ya the best
Saw them here in St Louis after the release of their first album. Did not dissapoint. The bonus was that this guy I had never heard of was the warm up group - Stevie Ray Vaughn.
More than a feeling is a MUST, one of my fave songs ever!!!!!!
I've seen this band about 5 times from their first album tour "Boston" in 76 and they have been a favorite of mine since then
Saw these cats about 30 yrs ago and they were amazing !!! One of the best Concerts I've ever seen.
No song named Hollyann on their first album
I think you mean "More than a feeling"
"I see my Mariann walking away"
@@lilpoohbear653 NOPE, my comment is amended to reflect which album "HollyAnn" is on.
We went to see Boston in a Star theater which was not as big and it was amazing! I still have the ticket stubs 😁👍
I'll see them in Memphis. At 1st August 15th 1978, that was my wife's birthday. They were touring doing their second album and they were awesome
Live is cool, but to get the best out of the recording, the album version is a must. This recording is pretty brutal.
It cracks me up how little time. It took you to be totally on board with boston into this song
Their song " Smoking" shows off their hard rocking side. Great road trip song.
Definitely need to listen to the live version
Oh the wonderful memories of the 70s. Im so happy i was a teen during that decade. ❤
VERY deep dive on Boston is a GIFT! Lol. I don't think you will be disappointed. Treasure trove of music!
Class of 78 .. .. The spaceship has landed,,, then Boston arrives!,
Sorry I missed this show. It took place at Giants stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey about an hour north of me. Unfortunately I was at Camp Lejeune then.
One of the best live concert bands ever!!
Dude, this is the just the tip of the Boston iceberg!
One of the most under rated bands of all time
Fantastic band. And folks, I understand why he does live versions - even if it's rough, it's real- no auto-tune. Talent shines its own light, naturally. ✌️❤️
This is called music. And talent.
That song always brings to mind the Pheonix album from Grand Funk Railroad
Sebs,I am so surprised that you have not listened to Boston, yet on your show….I think you will love them…
I'm surprised you've never done Boston before. They, along with The Eagles, defined my high school years. I do like the studio version better. 🎉✌🏻❤️☀️
Need to do some Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, best rock band ever imo, REFUGEE is a good one to start…dude had over 40 hits and the songs that weren’t hits were even better, killer blues/rock, little bit of country up until his death at 66
That was Barry Geudreau on the guitar on this one. Great player. Tom was on the organ. He wrote 90% of Boston songs.
A very important thing to know is that this album, released in 1976, was the first shot fired over the bow of disco. After two years of nothing but that, sitting down at a party and putting this album on the turntable was a breath of fresh rock air.
One of the best albums ever! Not a bad song on it. Maybe listen to it cuz the sound quality is so much better.
Boston is the best! Would rather it was the studio version of this song.
💖💖💖 "Amanda", "Don't Look Back" and "A Man I'll Never Be" are great.
This was one of those songs that you rolled down the car windows, took the t-tops off, got on the highway cranked up the volume and jammed the whole way down the road. Oh to be a teenager again.
I loved covering Boston on drums, especially this one.
Saw them live in 2016. Took me straight back to my teen years.
🇧🇷 Sebs, Boston it is a great band. 👍
Check out Edgar Winter, “Free Ride.” He was the first keyboard player to put a strap on a keyboard so he could come out behind the bank of boards.
Every single song on the debut album every single song was a hit!!!
Just think how much all of this music is influencing your playing..... :) Long live rock!
I agree the studio version is so clean, but I have never heard this live one before! Very fun
I prefer the studio version. So much cleaner sounds. I can’t believe you still don’t use headphones, sounds SO MUCH better. Boston 🤟🏼
Tom Scholz the band creator and guitarist was a MIT graduate and experimented with all different sounds, great great band.
I think that third stage beautifully pictures a relationship through life. You should listen to the whole album.
The sound effects in foreplay were done by Tom Scholz on guitar with a modified effects pedal. Tom is an MIT engineer. Great musician and heck of an engineer.
