    I wish Azure would come to the UK. Trying to get anything bulk in the UK isn't easy other than amazon. And you can't get bulk fruit and veg unless you grow it yourself. I only have a small patio garden these days so can't grow as much. Until a few years ago I had a allotment but my pain and disabilities stopped me being able to look after it. So that is why I live vicariously through some homesteading channels.

    • @modernhomesteadalaska
      @modernhomesteadalaska  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh wow that’s totally different from even here in Alaska

      @@modernhomesteadalaska water bath canning has been in the UK since preserving food started. But pressure canning is new. We have to get our pressure canners imported from the USA. We have no agencies here research or testing. We can now get dehydrator pretty easily but it's still new too. None of my family even my older aunts and uncles know anything about Dehydrating or pressure canning. My grandma did used to make jams from her fruit trees when I was younger. But she is the only one, and my grandparents from both sides have been gone for along time. I'm the same age as you but my parents are gone now too. So I've taught myself to preserve foods, my grandparents did teach me about growing foods.

    Considering the amount of travel those peaches took to reach you, that was a very small amount of waste! When I made pie filling, I used to can mine for in jars. It was versatile as filling or toppings.

    Hi Jessica! I saw a tip online I wanted to share with you. This person posted that every time she empties a canning jar, she cleans it and fills it with water and pops a used lid on it and vacuum seals it. What a great way to store extra clean water and make use of the empty space inside the jar instead of wasting that space! Brilliant!

    At one time you asked how we stored canning rings. I live in a small house, I don't have a lot of storage so my solution is, (please don't yell at the screen before you finish reading) I store them on my jars. I process my product, I take the rings off wash/wipe my jars then put the rings back on just slightly, if I'm not careful when I pick them by the ring I might drop the jar, I also use a piece of paper under the ring for my label, instead of writing on the lid. I save my used lids for when I'm storing dry goods in canning jars. Have a wonderful day.

    I made my favorite jelly I've ever made, from the skins and pits of peaches! I put them in a crockpot on low, and covered them with water for about 20-24 hours! (I wasn't able to get to them sooner). I drained them through a cheesecloth and got about 12 cups of juice. I don't ever press the cloth, because it could cause the juice to become cloudy. The first 8 cups, a double batch, I made with low sugar pectin and cane sugar. It set with no problem at all. In fact, I usually double all my jam and jelly recipes and have no issues with the set. The peach flavor was so amazing, I can't believe how good it taste, and that it was made from parts many people just throw away! I did the same with apple cores and peels, and added lots of fall spices. It's so good on biscuits or to pour over a pork loin, in a crockpot, along with some beef broth, and let it slow cook all day. It becomes a version of "pork chops and apple sauce" flavors! I shared the leftovers and add some BBQ sauce and more apple jelly, if needed, for pulled pork sandwiches, and put it on nice buns with Cole slaw on top of the meat!!! Solo comforting on a cold night, while watching football!
    I recently saw someone make butternut squash soup, but she peeled the squash and cut the thin peels into small chip-size pieces, added oil, salt n pepper, and roasted them until crisp. (An air fryer would help do this faster). She also roasted the seeds the same way. I've seen that if you par boil them first, they aren't so chewy when you go to eat them. They, too, could be roasted in an air fryer. I was amazed to see how it used EVERY part of the squash! They sprinkled both the seeds and the "chips" on each bowl of soup! *Just an idea for a future video and meal.

    Cornstarch thickens when heated, so if you were to canned food with cornstarch in it, either water bath or pressure can, it would prevent heat from getting throughout the whole product; thus, it wouldn't kill off the botulism spores or other microorganisms and would be unsafe to eat.

    Jessica- I saw a really cool post on fb and it was a lady who had a bunch of empty canning jars and she learned this trick from her grandmother. Anywho, she put water in all the empty jars and stored them that way until she needed them. She had a storm and the power when out for a few days and she had a ton of water jars that came in super handy . Her neighbors knew she had done this and they were all coming to her and asking her for her water . She of course kept most of it for her family but I thought what an amazing idea for fresh water they grandmas theory was : why store them empty when you can use them to store water for emergency purposes ❤…. If you can't get fresh jalapenos, would the jars of sliced jalapenos work, if you drained them, rinsed off the vinegar, put them in your salad spinner, and freeze dried them?....or put a liner on your freeze dryer tray, drain the vinegar, and place them directly on the liner to freeze dry? They're already sliced up, and you may even be able to find them in those restaurant size cans???

    it's said you shouldn't can recipes with cornstarch (or flour, for that matter) because it can make the product too dense and the heat cannot penetrate throughout the jar, much like why you don't can pumpkin puree...if heat can't penetrate, it isn't killing off bacteria/mold.
