I learned so much from this tutorial, and now you get to learn with me! It was truly quite fun and I was easily able to get the hang of it and take out all of those carwash swirls! I had never even held a buffer before this day. After this few hours of work I felt confident in my skills, the tools and the products to be able to tackle the rest of our fleet. First time I look at one of your videos and, what a great teacher you are ! Absolutely awesome! No extra bla bla, no ''I want your attention'', just a great lesson and thank you Sir, much appreciate!
I like this company. Yvan's straight forward down to earth common sense approach to detailing is a welcome change from all the hype and mystique that is so prevalent in the detailing world.
Excellent teaching practices, Yvan! A great teacher makes sure that they give the student the tools to be successful from the start. The fact that Emily (a fantastic student, by the way!) was already enjoying the satisfaction of learning and making major improvement before the lesson was even over... that level of teaching requires such deep knowledge of the field that you could relate it to just about anyone with any background, and guide them to proficiency in a such a way that they'll never doubt their ability to master the skill with practice. Instilling that kind of confidence so quickly is what every teacher should strive for, and you do it as well as anyone I've ever seen. I have recently bought a slightly older Jeep Wrangler. I enjoy washing my car myself and do so once every week to every other week depending. I enjoyed it so much that I have binge watched almost all of your other videos and it has completely opened my eyes about detailing a vehicle. Your videos, being the first I watched, made me watch some of your “competitors” processes and comparable products. I am about to polish my Black GMC pickup and purchased a rotary polisher and kit off Amazon, never polished a vehicle but I did a nice ski boat I had awhile back and was very impressed, using an older rotary with a large pad. But I watched your video and now I feel confident enough to tackle my truck, its a 1997 GMC Ext cab with still very nice factory paint. Thanks for all the tips and wish me luck.
Just got my first polisher at a bargain price, i'm just an enthusiast, so this is the first time i actually try a rotary to polish. You sir, you deserve my sub, thank you ❤
Very good video. I picked up a lot of tips. I like Emilys enthusiasm for the job. One major issue I would like to pick up on. Emilys instructor should have stressed to her to tie her long hair up. In a workshop especially around rotary equipment long hair is a safety hazard. You dont get a second chance. I learned that from Tech school back in the seventies. We were made to wear a hair net in trade classes. Either that or get our hair cut. Took us guys a while to get used to the hair net but that was better than getting your hair caught in a machine and getting scalped. The thought sends shivers down my spine. Keep the good work up. Also wear some eye protection too. Some of that car polish flicked in the eyes not good. I hope i don't sound too much of a grouch. Take care and keep polishin.
Thank you, having no hair myself it’s not something I think about. For the eye protection, agreed. One advantage of The Gold Standard Polishing System is that we have zero sling nor dust.
Or tuck it in the back of your overalls. I used to have long hair in the 80s when I started in a body shop using angle grinders and rotaries.. I learnt after a very close incident.. Props for pointing it out.
I’m ready to give the rotary another spin. 30+ years ago, I was traumatized by a thick wool pad and a Black & Decker rotary. My dad and I were buffing new out blue lacquer paint on a car I sprayed in the garage. I burned through down to the primer several times. I can remember using a flat blade screwdriver to clean the pad. Times sure have changed.
I've just brough a polisher for a couple of vehicles, this is just what i needed, thank you! Can i just point out, when using any rotary machine, the young lady should have her hair tied up, getting into odd positions while working could get her hair wrapped in the machine...I've seen it happen, it happens fast.
I love this. "Gee I'd like to polish my vehicle, but I'm scared I will mess it up!" Ivan says "no problem, here's a video of a middle school girl doing it."

I’ve been trying to master my rotary, to a point where, I couldn’t do it. Hung it back up and continued with my DA. This video has showed me where I’ve been going wrong. Less grip is best results. All of the jumping around has been because of being too tight on the machine, which is where the DA wants to be, where it rotates and oscillates. I’ll give the rotary another outing in the spring and see if I can finally master it. Thanks for such a good video tutorial 👍🏻
I have watched so many "Tutorials"!!! on polishing and they all say a beginner has to use a DA. My wax supplier here in Glasgow always tells me that his Rotary is his go to tool for polishing and I tell him I am a total novice so I tell him it is a DA for me. Maybe I should listen to him and try a Rotary. Sometimes I think detailers on TH-cam try to scare us so that no more detailers go down the route of polishing and steal work away from them. This was the best Tutorial on polishing I have ever watched. Thanks again.
When you polished the drivers door and pointed out that there were still some scratches, if you were going for the next level would you go with a more aggressive DA (ie 21mm) or more aggressive pad (ie DIY Wool Pad)?
Thanks, Emily and thanks to the guys at DIY, I have been wanting to try and put a finish on my 10 year old Jaguar, but was hesitant. now, I feel more confident after watching this. well done !
Car buffers get a bad wrap but what i like about them is that they actually improve the paint and don't make a lot of noise so they wont damage your hearing. And the new ones out today spin over 3500- 4500 rpms which is way faster than the old ones from years ago.
This was so awsome! literally everything ive been needing to watch as i just bought a DA polisher. Most people i talk to tell me im going to end up messing up my paint doing it myself. I will also be getting a rotary now. Thanks again!
Would using a slightly dripping microfibre cloth that’s be dunked in your rimless then gently held against the waffle pad as you spin it up for a second or 2 work with both cleaning and making the waffle pad damp rather than keep removing it from the backing plate. Also for those who are looking into polishing a vehicle, I can strongly recommend getting a test panel from a scrap yard to help you get use to the feel of your machine polisher
Just purchased a new vehicle and the dealer was kind enough to polish it for me and leave swirl marks all over including the tail light lenses. I was just wondering if I could use the gold standard polish with a gold waffle pad to polish the plastic lenses on the tail lights. Thanks, John.
I’ve been detailing for 33 years. The last 10 years I’ve been using the Flex 3401 and occasionally the Rupes Bigfoot mark 3. Like many I’ve avoided the direct rotary machine but after watching this video I’m excited to buy one and use the waffle pads. I’ve seen many cars buffed with a rotary and the clear had crazy trail lines noticeable in the sun from bad technique. Thank you
Hi Yvan, I'm a beginner and very curious about the function that a detailing light can switch the CCT and have much higher CRI, how is that help to polishing a car and in what situation should we use different CCT?
@@diydetailofficial Thank you for your reply Yvan. One more question, why a detailing light need high CRI? I tried use a work light with Ra80 and it can still see the paint defect, and that confuse me what the real meaning of high CRI for detailing lights.
@Yvan, what size polisher do you prefer more and why? I have about 30yr old Porter Cable 6” DA now, but would like to move to a M18. I was going to go with the 15mm, but a couple of people are telling to move up to the 21mm. Thanks in advance for your invite and thoughts
Great video! Question: I used a very light general purpose polish before ceramic coating and it really cleaned up the clearcoat. What it didn’t do is get out some of the light swirl marks. What’s a good slightly more aggressive polish for a beginner to use if you want to do a two-step process instead of just one real light polish? next time I do a ceramic coating, I’ll probably do it two-step to make sure and remove some of the light swirls.
I've really tried to embrace the Rotary. I have the 6" plate from Lake Country & gold std waffle on my Milwaukee rotary. Still need to try alot more apparently. I keep reaching for my cordless 15 mm DA...seems so much smoother and balanced to me...
Yvan do you plan to come to Ottawa for polish training in the near future. Love the shine on that truck. Well done Emily look at you master that polisher.
Informative, straight to the point, and practically useful material. You don't see that everyday, thank you sir. By the way, the yellow waffle pad link is broken and I couldn't find the smaller machine on your website, could you give me the make and model please?
Thank you! Just fixed the link, much appreciated, here are our two polishing machines. MAX GLOSS ROTARY POLISHER: bit.ly/DIYMaxGlossRotary 25MM DUAL ACTION POLISHER: bit.ly/25mmCorrectionProDA
@@diydetailofficial You're welcome 🙂 Thank you for the links, but I was referring to the small one that can be held by one hand and looks a bit like a sander.
Hey, what is the best procedure to prime a pad in Europe, since your gold standard polish is not available yet. I have found on other channels a technique that is called "pick up a bead", where you basically put a straight line of polish on the car and then pick it up with rotary running and then you start polishing. Would you recommend this over the 5 or so dots on the pad? I appreciate the answer, and have a great day!
Picking up a bead was popular in the 70’s, but uses too much product. Just dampen your pad with DIY Detail Rinseless Wash. For the EU, our list of distributors is growing. Https://diydetail.com/pages/distributors
is gold standard safe with piano black surfaces? and can I just wipe the polish off by spraying ceramic gloss then wipe, for the whole car? seems like a legit paint enhancement method
Yes it is! We prefer to wipe with a short nap towel, barely damp from your Rinseless Wash bucket, to remove polish. Then you've got a slightly damp surface and then you just use a light spray/mist of Ceramic Gloss onto the paint, followed by a plush dry towel until it's all dry...this is a great way to polish and protect in *almost* one step
You may need to do more passes. Remember polishing doesn’t remove scratches, it removes the clear coat around the scratch down to the level of the scratch.
I use a DA but isn’t the rotary more dangerous on edges? I have never used a rotary despite watching the video still curious to get some feedback on this question
Bravo on your pronunciation of Oconomowoc Yvan. Emily thanks so much for putting yourself out there to be taught and help everyone else learn. That's something not many people will let themselves do and you made it look easy!
I just bought a polisher and plan to polish first car soon but I cannot find anything on the pars types. What I mean is his pad is waffle like but when you look at options there are tons more flat with straight lines through them. Which one is better, his type puts less surface area on panel is this a safer option also thinking less heat? Or is there nearly no difference between this or the straight line groove ones?
Yes first time polishing my motorcycle . With a buffing pad when you start with a new buffing pad do we get the pad wet with water or spray or spread polishing into pad.
How does rinseless wash clean polish out of a pad? It's a solution designed to not remove waxes and sealants but yet it just washes polish out of a pad?
New detailer here. And I got a new rotary tool. I've only been using it to apply carnuba wax and it kept slinging everywhere. I learned to immediately it into the pad, and I'd get significantly less sling. In the video he said his pads are always slightly damp, im assuming just water? I don't have a liquid wax, I have the paste kind. Any tips on how to make less sling? Also, my rotary tool has up to 7 speeds. But even just the first speed seems so fast! I can't imagine using the other speeds! I did learn that you don't need to press down. That's what I was doing. My pad rotate speed would change and I thought I had a defective rotary. What speed should I be using for waxing?
Emily, you have such a friendly and beautiful smile. Thanks for doing what you did to show us how an amateur can do this. Well done on the rotary and the courage to do what you did.
@@diydetailofficial I did, she is amazing, her knowledge of the Audi is incredible for such a young person and especially being a female. She could become the next CEO of Audi. 😊. I think you guys are the first to bring an amateur on a show and give them the opportunity to try it out. Well done.
I have that Milwaukee 7" rotary. What replacement wheel did you use to turn it into the 6"? Also planning on getting one of their DA units and was wondering if the 15 or 21 would be better given i have the rotary? Im not a professional, but will likely be doing and maintaining 4+ cars.
Thank you. I have a 20 year old vehicle and the car care centers that I could afford were not enough in the long term. This video has helped cut through the techie talk and addressed beginner level body mechanics with mistake corrections. The moist, clean pads, and initial damp towel to wipe off the polish cleared up a problem I have had in the past. I now have a better chance at getting my babe further down the road with dignity.
For a black 2014 Audi Rs5 could i use the wool /red jeweling combo followed up with the C6 APP to prepare for Hydro Lite ceramic coating? Or you thinks its too harsh for Audi paint for wool
Great work and she did a very good job! We all struggle the first few times using a polisher on a big vehicle but I thought she picked up quickly. The Fed jeweling pad is therapeutic to me and even doing just a two section pass as polishing speed adds a ton of gloss. Thank you for another great video!
Great video and i just knew the rotary was going to get picked at the end. The rotary isn't really loved over here in th UK it's all about the DA, I'm all for the rotary myself.
At the 25-minute point and discovery of the scratches below the drivers mirror. Could you have done the 5-5-5 process with that orbital sander to remove them?
Very nice! You said have a towel damp with no rinse to wipe off the polish. What dilution ratio with water does the no rinse need to be! And just how dame should it be? Thanks, Tom
Hi, I bout a car that it’s new, I know we should descontaminate, clay, polish a sealed .my question is what polisher brand do you recommend for a begginer? Thanks you for your vids
I'd skip the clay on a newer car if it feels smooth...they do scratch the paint some. I prefer to clean with varsol for tar or methyl hydrate for tree sap (a type ofalcohol from hardware paint section) before ever pulling out a clay bar.
Is it safe to say to just use a polish on micro scratches and no compounds? I plan on keeping my vehicle a long time and don't think compounds are a wise decision. I recently bought a 2021 Ford Expedition Black and it has some micro scratches. You almost can not see them unless you look closely.
The missing info for me is I want to know how long do we work on the section per one spray of compound. How do we know when to stop? I have a DA brand new but I've never used it, now I'm searching for the rotary one, although I might try to use the Ryobi sander instead 🤭
I've never used a rotary, but it looks like it'd be more fun, making the user feel more in control, more like a sculptor. "The smile of stress," the smile of a challenge.
By far the best how-to I've seen on this 👏👏 One thing though, did I miss the part about how often pads are meant to be cleaned - is it really after every panel...? ✌️
Not only knowledgeable, but an excellent teacher as well. Those 2 don't always go together but it was so great to see!

Thank you
In the pad washer, do you guys have plain water or rinseless wash??
Thanks.
DIY Detail Rinseless Wash at 256-1
Nice job Emily! You have a fantastic teacher. Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you so much!
Thank you!
Really liked this vid….like to see you instructing first time detailers
Glad you enjoyed it
Would using a slightly dripping microfibre cloth that’s be dunked in your rimless then gently held against the waffle pad as you spin it up for a second or 2 work with both cleaning and making the waffle pad damp rather than keep removing it from the backing plate.
Also for those who are looking into polishing a vehicle, I can strongly recommend getting a test panel from a scrap yard to help you get use to the feel of your machine polisher
Yes that works to keep the pad clean. A test hood is definitely a great idea
I worked for old beater car lots and practiced like that, old cars friends and family have are also a good choice.
At 15:23 you can see she is really enjoying this. Great job Emily, and Yvan is a very capable and patient instructor.
Thank you!
Yes I was! Yvan is a great teacher!!
@@emilytheaudinerd👌
You guys are one of the best teachers I have. Thanks for this video
Wow, thank you!
It was never mentioned the speed to dial in. I'd be interested in what all 3 of the machines were set on. Thank you. Great video for a resource.
Rotary speed 1, DA speed 3, the sander is full speed
@diydetailofficial thank you! Appreciate your responce.
God bless you all! Thankful for your helpful content.
Thanks for watching!
he is definitely a great teacher 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you.
Just purchased a new vehicle and the dealer was kind enough to polish it for me and leave swirl marks all over including the tail light lenses. I was just wondering if I could use the gold standard polish with a gold waffle pad to polish the plastic lenses on the tail lights. Thanks, John.
Yes you can
I’ve been detailing for 33 years. Thank you
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video!! ❤Curious would this same polish method work for a car that has a paint protection film applied?
Yes
Hi Yvan, I'm a beginner and very curious about the function that a detailing light can switch the CCT and have much higher CRI, how is that help to polishing a car and in what situation should we use different CCT?
Colour temperature helps when doing different paints . I prefer lower temperatures on lighter colours.
The 21 is definitely the better machine. I like 6 inch pads.
What do you wet the polish removal towel with please? Just water or some diluted no-rinse wash?
Yes, DIY Detail Rinse Less Wash at 256-1
Great video!
The DIY Detail Gold Standard Polishing System is very effective and simple to use.
I've really tried to embrace the Rotary. I have the 6" plate from Lake Country & gold std waffle on my Milwaukee rotary. Still need to try alot more apparently. I keep reaching for my cordless 15 mm DA...seems so much smoother and balanced to me...
It’s a learning curve.
The best part of this video is teaching a younger generation how to wax and polish!
Thank you.
Yvan do you plan to come to Ottawa for polish training in the near future. Love the shine on that truck. Well done Emily look at you master that polisher.
It can be arranged, find 4 others to participate and I’m there
Informative, straight to the point, and practically useful material. You don't see that everyday, thank you sir.
By the way, the yellow waffle pad link is broken and I couldn't find the smaller machine on your website, could you give me the make and model please?
Thank you! Just fixed the link, much appreciated, here are our two polishing machines.

@@diydetailofficial You're welcome 🙂
Thank you for the links, but I was referring to the small one that can be held by one hand and looks a bit like a sander.

@@diydetailofficial Thanks guys!!
@tilenpodobnik641 thank you for the questions
is gold standard safe with piano black surfaces? and can I just wipe the polish off by spraying ceramic gloss then wipe, for the whole car? seems like a legit paint enhancement method
Do you have to do any additional work to remove surfaces scratches ?
You may need to do more passes. Remember polishing doesn’t remove scratches, it removes the clear coat around the scratch down to the level of the scratch.
Where do I get that backing plate? Which one is it exactly? I just know it's 5 inch rotary pad you have on.
Lake Country Manufacturing backing plates
Came across this video by accident, zoomed on it and enjoyed it. Thank you
Thank you.
Hi ! Great video Yvan 👍🏻
Q: how do you polish under the door handel whitout a 1 inche polish machine ?? Thx u
By hand.
I use a DA but isn’t the rotary more dangerous on edges? I have never used a rotary despite watching the video still curious to get some feedback on this question
No more dangerous than the DA.
Bravo on your pronunciation of Oconomowoc Yvan. Emily thanks so much for putting yourself out there to be taught and help everyone else learn. That's something not many people will let themselves do and you made it look easy!
Thank you, yes Emily is great.
He's great and he makes it seem like fun. I was polishing my car yesterday and it wasn't that enjoyable after a few hours lol.
Sorry to hear that
I just bought a polisher and plan to polish first car soon but I cannot find anything on the pars types. What I mean is his pad is waffle like but when you look at options there are tons more flat with straight lines through them. Which one is better, his type puts less surface area on panel is this a safer option also thinking less heat? Or is there nearly no difference between this or the straight line groove ones?
Waffle pads are by far the best, but manufacturers prefer flat pads to lower costs
So which machine is for specific polishing or it really doesn’t matter which machine I use?
Use the one that best suits you
I don't have a spray polish, I have a regular polish. So in which way should I apply polish on the pad?
Per the manufactures instructions.
Yes first time polishing my motorcycle . With a buffing pad when you start with a new buffing pad do we get the pad wet with water or spray or spread polishing into pad.
Start with a damp pad.
How does rinseless wash clean polish out of a pad? It's a solution designed to not remove waxes and sealants but yet it just washes polish out of a pad?
Polish has no waxes or sealants
Thanks yvan for the knowledge, and the best thing I bought was the pad cleaner ❤
Great to hear!
The lowest speed possible, and use a waffle pad
Emily, you have such a friendly and beautiful smile. Thanks for doing what you did to show us how an amateur can do this. Well done on the rotary and the courage to do what you did.
Hopefully you can go check out her channel.
@@diydetailofficial I did, she is amazing, her knowledge of the Audi is incredible for such a young person and especially being a female. She could become the next CEO of Audi. 😊. I think you guys are the first to bring an amateur on a show and give them the opportunity to try it out. Well done.
Do you recommend a 5" or 6" backing plate for the rotary?
I prefer a 6 inch, but it’s personal preference, both work well.
Any brand of 6 inch backing plate works. Get a 21 mm
Happy to help
Cleaning between steps really helps so you don't get holograms in the end. Easy step to forget too!
For a black 2014 Audi Rs5 could i use the wool /red jeweling combo followed up with the C6 APP to prepare for Hydro Lite ceramic coating? Or you thinks its too harsh for Audi paint for wool
That’s fine
@@diydetailofficial ok thanks a bunch . Hopefully it wont be too windy outside putting the coating on
Great work and she did a very good job! We all struggle the first few times using a polisher on a big vehicle but I thought she picked up quickly. The Fed jeweling pad is therapeutic to me and even doing just a two section pass as polishing speed adds a ton of gloss. Thank you for another great video!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video and i just knew the rotary was going to get picked at the end. The rotary isn't really loved over here in th UK it's all about the DA, I'm all for the rotary myself.
Thanks 👍
At the 25-minute point and discovery of the scratches below the drivers mirror. Could you have done the 5-5-5 process with that orbital sander to remove them?
Yes, we could have.
Very nice! You said have a towel damp with no rinse to wipe off the polish. What dilution ratio with water does the no rinse need to be! And just how dame should it be? Thanks, Tom
256:1 dilution, you actually want the towel barely damp and short nap towel is best. Thanks for watching!
@@diydetailofficial thank you Sir!
@Okie-Tom thanks for the question
What brand is the corder rotary used and is it the machine under $30.00?, its looks lighter than Milwaukee and easy to use.
Car shield
Hi, I bout a car that it’s new, I know we should descontaminate, clay, polish a sealed .my question is what polisher brand do you recommend for a begginer?
Thanks you for your vids
The brand isn’t important, get one that has good service support locally.
I'd skip the clay on a newer car if it feels smooth...they do scratch the paint some. I prefer to clean with varsol for tar or methyl hydrate for tree sap (a type ofalcohol from hardware paint section) before ever pulling out a clay bar.
Ho, great video thank you for that. I have a question-shouldn’t you measure thickness of the paint before and after polishing?
It’s not really useful.
Excellent video and congrats on all of the DIY success! How does the Milwaukee cordless rotary compare to the Flex cordless rotary?
What model number is the Milwaukee rotary?
I prefer the corded machines.
Noted, thank you.
Is it safe to say to just use a polish on micro scratches and no compounds? I plan on keeping my vehicle a long time and don't think compounds are a wise decision. I recently bought a 2021 Ford Expedition Black and it has some micro scratches. You almost can not see them unless you look closely.
Correct, compounding is like using a sledgehammer to drive a finishing nail.
Thank you so much and great video too@@diydetailofficial
@rahouston thank you
Hey Yvan what a fantastic video. Thanks so much for this. You and Emily make it look so easy.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What speed do you use to cut and also for polish? Thanjs
The lowest speed your rotary will go, the difference between cutting and polishing is the pad.
The missing info for me is I want to know how long do we work on the section per one spray of compound. How do we know when to stop? I have a DA brand new but I've never used it, now I'm searching for the rotary one, although I might try to use the Ryobi sander instead 🤭
3-4 passes
I've never used a rotary, but it looks like it'd be more fun, making the user feel more in control, more like a sculptor. "The smile of stress," the smile of a challenge.
True
Does hydro lite fill in some light scratches to make the paint flat again
No
@@diydetailofficial could i stack hydro lite with diy 5 for extra gloss?
@@diydetailofficial if you spray some clear coat on deep scratches then polish them
No
I want to remove the coating my car have now, I put 2y coating I can use the same product for that an what polisher machine you will recommend?
The Gold Standard Polishing System yellow pad.
By far the best how-to I've seen on this 👏👏
One thing though, did I miss the part about how often pads are meant to be cleaned - is it really after every panel...? ✌️
Yes, never add Clean polish to a dirty pad.
@@diydetailofficial yes but how often? How many m2 would you expect the average pad to last before it needs cleaning?
@anonimushbosh it needs cleaning after every section.
@@diydetailofficial Wow... Thanks!
