frrrr. i wish people could just be respectful when a style isn’t for them. boost the styles you DO like then, and press not interested/scroll for the ones you don’t. it’s perfectly fine to dislike a style, but it is *not* okay to hate and harass people for them.
Omg hi Bre I love your videos!! It makes sense that you would watch Duchess Celestia lol
Hey, Bre! Love your vids as well 😊
OMGA IS THAT WHO I THINK IT ISSSSSSSSSS ✨
Oh my gosh love your videos
@@ellabeezee OMGA!?!? INANIMATE INSANITY REFERENCE!!!!???!!??
The whole segment about anime having a wealth of individualistic style choices that the creators consciously decided on has every middle school art teacher quaking in their arbitrarily-banning-anime-but-no-other-animation-inspired-art-is-off-the-table boots.
The Venn diagram of people who hate on popular styles and those who bully artists with more unique but less conventionally attractive styles is an almost perfect circle.
Bonus points if said people also glaze up AI art as well
When I see a style I don't like, I'm just "oh the character is cool, but this isn't for me" and go look at different art, it's that easy to move on ya know
The world would be so much better and more positive if everyone just followed the concept of "if you don't like something, don't interact with it".
Videos like this further reassure my decision not to get a Tiktok. I see so many artists promoting Tiktok as a way to grow your audience, but I see a new video pop up on my feed almost every day discussing some new art community controversy/drama that originated there. From what I've seen, people are way too comfortable leaving hate comments there because they think they're being funny. If that's what it takes to expand my reach, I think I'm comfortable keeping to the little corner of the internet I've carved out for myself.
Idk how grounded in reality my opinion is but I feel like people who hates on artstyles just because they're popular are jealous because it isn't THEIR artstyle that is popular.
Not all the time, I HATE the jelly art style but I’m not jealous at all
I don’t even have my own art style yet
But then again I never hated on jelly art vocally
It's not always jealousy, preferences exist.
But it's not an excuse to being directly hateful and harass someone with style that you dislike.
Little update : I know it's way more nuances than what I said, but I can't help but see that more often than not, people who hates on certain artstyles are teenagers jealous because their own skills are lower than what they hate for. I don't mean it as a "Lol you kids suck a$$", but more as a "Hating on someone more skilled than you isn't gonna make your art any better"
Exactly! I’ve always compared art style to handwriting. Just because your handwriting looks similar to someone else doesn’t mean you’re writing the same words.
When people say they want original art styles, a majority don't realize everything is derivative and inspired by something. Case in point: many of Disney's older films are based on fairy tales. Another example is Jean Pierre Polnareff's design being the influence for Benimaru Nikaido's design.
Honest to god, hand on heart. I am convinced the hate of anime styles is racial at this point. I mean the amount of times I've seen people call it the "incest" style is insane. Like what does taht even mean because the definition I got makes no sense???
Like the definition I was given is that it basically refers to "all anime shares aspects of itself so much that it "causes inbreeding" within the medium" but then its like???? All art does????? All styles and mediums of art literally feed into each other and self-reference within their medium all the time (hence the proverb "good artists borrow, great artists steal), so why is the popular style typically associated with Japan the only style being labelled as "incestuous"?
I literally never see anyone call any other style that specific word so it looks, sounds and smells like a little motivation of the racially inclined variety, and to me if it looks, sounds or smells like a rat then i am calling it a rat.
I believe this goes back to a comment in an interview a certain anime director (I believe Hayao Miyazaki) made, not about art styles, but about the sources that creatives draw on. He criticised that anime is made now by people who primarily consume anime and little else. Whether he is right about that is a different question. This interview is also the source of the fake quote „anime was a mistake“.
To be clear, Miyazaki never said either „anime was a mistake“ or „anime art is incestuous“ but these are both fake quotes attributed to him as a result of this interview by people looking to boil down a more complex critique into shareable one liners!
I kinda agree with this however the last part feels like an insult....TO RATS!!
I've always felt this blind hatred of anime for being odd while western stuff gets praise when BOTH are doing the exact same thing just REEKS of xenophobia and maybe r*cism towards Japan
You know someone is artistically illiterate if refers to drawings as "anime style" or is constantly talking about "style", fr
The thing that's especially ridiculous about expecting people to have "original", "inventive" and "unique" artstyles is that if you think about it, there is *no such thing* as a "wholly original art style", because all art ultimately draws from shapes and forms found in the real world. _Everything_ artistic is built on both what came before and the artist's environment (both physical and mental/emotional), whether it be art, music, storytelling, cinematography, etc., so pure originality is a myth.
I wholeheartedly agree that artists (of all kinds, not just visual!) should do what they enjoy rather than conforming to the arbitrary and imaginary standards of a bunch of random people. Otherwise they'll be discouraged and fall out of love with the medium they enjoyed creating in.
Well put! It becomes obvious how people view our skills when they always expect something new, not realising it takes time, effort and a lot of practice to develop something new. If they want something new everytime they should just type in their little Ai prompt and get bored quickly. Appreciation for our work is very very scarce nowadays
my thing is that i just uninstalled tiktok so whenever i see art i like i just like it and move on instead of looking through comments and see their "criticism" social media is actually so bad for artists and ESPECIALLY beginner artists, because instead of actually helping the beginner they will either give fake compliments or just straight up bully the beginner and just make them quit. so yea uninstalling any social media and actually improving myself is what helped me through since there's toxicity everywhere on social media nowadays :p
Art styles are just a way of drawing. I dont understand how people can ''hate it'' just say thats it is not your cup of tea
I'll see so many people hate on SamDoesArts' style or styles similar to it, but I'm going to be honest, every time I go check his profile again I'm just amazed, I love his art so much, I love anime art, manhwa art, jelly art, realism art, cartoon art.
I wish people would prioritize supporting people's art styles whether they are popular or not, what matters most is drawing in the style you personally find joy in! Styles are always changing, too, I get influenced so much by whatever I'm currently obsessed with like BSD and Persona lmbo, just let people draw whatever style!
See, this is why I wish people appreciated art like artists appreciate eachother - a lot of non-artists feel the need to criticize art styles when they don't know how hard it is to build a style, let alone learn the techniques to get there. Just complete and utter disrespect to the artists that try their hardest with each piece they put out. 😞
Also many non-artists treat realistic styles as inherently superior to more stylized art. I have seen this attitude from a few artists as well but more often from non-artists. It's something that made me angry for a while as well.
The real question is who in the right mind would hate Loish’s art style (probably some people) but still! I honestly do not understand some people.
Yeah it's one thing to have a preference of art styles and another to just straight up hating it just for the sake of it. Some art styles I like and some i don't. Not everyone's art style is everyone's cup of tea but to bully someone for that art style is just lame af
The internet has left enough of an impact on me that to this day whenever I draw the dreaded "bean mouth" (because it's cute, dammit!) I still think just a little bit of all the hateful comments I've seen made about that sort of thing. I've never particularly let it bother me much, but I can only imagine how damaging that must be to so many other artists, especially ones who are younger or less experienced, but even just in general.
It’s so cute!!!! The bean mouth is the best!
Few things reassure me like a Celestia's video beginning with the mention of Squarespace
at this point u work for squarespace/j but fr, people need to stop hating on artstyles simply because they don't like it. I've seen people get hate crimed and death threats for it and it's honestly ridiculous
atp.
stuff like this is kind of why i haven't tried the "moe" artstyle even if i want to
Ironically, the Cal-arts style wasn’t even a thing. It’s just a lot of those artists were students at Cal-Arts. Love this video.
Funnily enough most of those artists weren't from Cal-Arts. And there's a popular gif that is supposed to show how similar those styles are but the images used do look different than the actual shows they are supposed to represent.
@synthellaart1587 That's crazy. 😆😆😆
Exactly. Awesome video as always, Celestia!
Some people can’t see the good things in life or would rather ignore or exclude the idea
I highly agree that everyone can like or dislike whatever and however they want to, and not bash their opinions. Thanks for the advice, Duchess Celestia.

There are definitely popular trends and styles I don't like, but I never understood why some people make such a big thing about not liking something. Just move on if something isn't for you. It's not that hard. Being angry and hateful is so exhausting.
As someone who got the "that thing you like is too mainstream, I don't like it because of that" a few times and called out for having a "Tumblr artstyle" because I like to colour noses in a slightly warmer tone I am so annoyed with people just hating on trends to be "different".
At the same time I also hate people trying to push things onto me just because they're popular and "yOu HaVe To SeE ThAt ShOw".
Can't people just accept different tastes?
Thx for the video Duchess
To be honest, I think most of the time people hate on popular art styles because they are envious of popular artists.
I LOVE jelly art
I feel like we have a narcissism epidemic. "I don't like it so nobody is allowed to like it!"
Honestly I stopped watching new shows that have the cal arts style bc it just became a red flag for just soulless corporate manufacturing. Now I think it's okay to dislike and hate a style when it comes from the industry choosing to not do anything different from the most marketable, because that's a product they're putting out. However to hate on a hobbyist artist or indy artist for having a common art style or doing fan art is just an L take
I made you and squarespace ship art 😭
I agree to your points too but I think it would be better if you also included the difference between Constructive Criticism to a style and just being a hater for the sake of hating. While its important to respect other artstyles its just as important as making points for improvement so that artists can learn from their mistakes to be better rather than just hating their style just because "lol ur art is bad"
Adding onto this, the criticism also should not be valid if it forces the artist to stop pursuing the specific style medium they're going for completely.
Like if they're going for anime and the style they're clearly going for is that of Lucky Star then the criticism should be catered to pursuing the Lucky Star style and nothing else. If your criticism is "hmmmm no you should draw it more like *insert other anime style on the complete opposite spectrum* cause it looks better" then your criticism is invalid and you can go cry about it.
People are also way too comfortable with throwing said criticism at everything they see. Some artists don't want criticism and that is fine, that's their choice.
@@vivianameganviviana3486 ah, I understand where this is going, you got a good point over there
@@synthellaart1587 ah yes that's something I missed, thank you
Have you looked into Bluesky? Do you have any thoughts about it?
To make a comparison to music: it seems a bit like asking musicians to invent new instruments for each piece because the others have already been used by others...
Reminds me of the time when I told someone that I was happy a band I liked released a new album with many good songs. And they straight up said, the album was trash because it was too mainstream, without having even listened to any of the songs. I mean usually you can tell if you didn't like a band in the past you're probably not gonna like new songs from the same group, but "too mainstream"? What's that even supposed to mean
Playing devil's advocate:
Maybe people isn't that they hate just because of being popular, but because it's being spammed and whatever they like, becomes harder and harder to find, to the point that the algorithms practically hide whatever they like, and they can't handle frustration in a better way.
Maybe, also, the bandwagon behind some trends are actually annoying and toxic.
Maybe, it's also because people that have a need of expressing themselves and be heard get cornered into either being silenced or being "corrupted", and most of times, happening both.
Maybe is that you people don't usually listen anybody outside the popular echo chamber.
There's a lot of reasons people can get tired and even hateful towards something you like.
Not that I'm into hating on popularity, but there's too much bad reasoning a lot of times. Try doing some steel men from time to time.

What did I do to deserve a Duchess Celestia video?❤❤
I feel like this sudden interest in labelling artstyles makes me hate them. I don't actually dislike the styles, but the constant "erm is this xyz-style?" ticks me off. It's MY STYLE. Nothing else. I'm so damn tired.
But what if "not my thing" simply isn't a strong enough word for how you feel about something? Sometimes, you just hate stuff. It doesn't mean it's bad or shouldn't exist. Just that you as an individual really, REALLY doesn't like something.
I think her arguments do miss a lot of points.
I don't hate art styles I hate people that think they have to copy popular things to get attention. It's not just a tiktok thing. Even way back to when fandoms were relegated to niche forums. Eventually there would be a few fan artists that stood out and then everyone would start to copy them. It's worse now on social media since it's a lot more people in an even bigger pool scrambling for attention.
I don't go around telling people to stop though I just block or tell whatever app to not show them to me and hope it works.
It never works, and frankly, she misses a lot of the points for being tired of trends
If your art style is Popular and "basic", then it's TOO OVERRATED and BORING, If it's unique and original, then it's the UGLIEST PIECE OF SHIT PEOPLE EVER SEEN!! it's like there's no winning, so, draw however you want
