Not only is Primus the most original band, each of their albums has its own sound, Les obviously sold his soul to the devil to be the worlds best bassist.
Don't discount his boy's!!! Just don't, doesn't matter which incarnation, it's devine, no auto synch, nothing but men, using their gifts to their creators intention. Listen, it's devine. WHOOPS It sucks, Suck on this, pick a song, can't go wrong, alnight long. He mutes! SLAPS and fingers, and what bitch wouldn't love him for it?
Best slam pits, WITNESS. No ill will, organized chaos, theres no reason for it, but it can't be stopped, not if I'm there anyways!!! I PAID ALOT OF $ FOR THESE TICKETS LOL
I've been a fan ever since I heard them way back in 1991 . At the time I was learning to play bass and I was just blown away by his playing . Another thing I loved about Primus was that the music was heavy but not dark like metal music , the songs were about race car drivers , a guy that sells Xmas trees or going fishing . Just fun .
Yeah, I used to have Zappa in the 'Weird to Be Weird' category til I listened to more of it. Some of his non-sequitors are better chosen or more clever, but you can always count on things not going an expected direction.
You guys need to watch the official video for this song. It’s so well produced and has some insane imagery that it really brings the story of Tommy the Cat to life!
I love that you guys have intelligent, in-depth thoughts and conversations about this. So much better than other Primus reactions I've seen. Keep up the great work!
This was the song that was played at the battle of the bands before bill and ted in the movie bill and teds excellent adventure.most people dont realize they have been around that long
Les credits Larry Graham of Sly and The Family Stone and Geddy Lee of Rush as his greatest bass influences, and The Isley Brothers as his greatest musical influence as a whole
Les Claypool most well-known basses are his Carl Thompson basses. He's recently started working with a friend of his and designing his own, Pachyderm Basses. That's what this one is.
Saw Primus live in 04 and their second set was playing Seas of Cheese cover to cover. Unbelievable live performance. I could never wrap my brain around how Les could make all those sounds come out of his bass when it just looks like fingers flailing around everywhere lol
Seeing past the shtick and being a true music head......is why I can see the talent in Zappa, Primus, Ponty, DiMeola...and still understand why Foxes and Friends are special too.
Love all the amazingly different musical components in this track, especially the rhythmic interlocking of the bass-and-drums. And while the frenetic studio vocal presence of Tom Waits is slightly missed, this track still slays regardless! And Ed, good catch on that harmonica microphone set-up. Plus, Doug, totally concur with your point 'bout those, perhaps, subtle O-Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" comparisons...
Sorry guys, Les don't mix anything with no Flea stuff... he came pretty much at the same time, even earlier and, he's also three times as good a bassist... he's in another level, although flea is great too ina rock context, Les is a real pro bassman, a truly pro in any musical context, and he stands strong against any Victor wooten, marcus miller etc... he's that good.
One watches Primus for the music.... You have to get past the weirdness of the themes and vocals, but that's part of their charm! You can't take them seriously.... except for their music!
Here's an interesting fact for you. Les Claypool was asked by Kirk Hammett to audition for Metallica after Cliff Burton died in the bus accident. You should listen to some of the stuff off of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Green Naugahyde albums and going back even more with Frizzle Fry.
You guys should have reacted to "Tommy the cat" live at the Dennis Miller show because of it being a much better performance, Les had a much thicker bass sound and was playing his fretless.
Nice reaction video. Keep up the good work !!! In keeping with the three piece band theme, I think you should check out and react to Asterism. They hail from Japan and have a full album which was allegedly produced by bootsy collins and buckethead. They rock, are called a metal band, but have more chops than a butcher shop. I'd pick the song Overdrive from one of the newer studio versions first.
@@JaDem148 Ballad of Bodacious, Greet the Sacred Cow, Power Mad, the whole album is such a certificate of authenticity. All the different folks from Hetfield to Tow Waits on that album make it something special for sure.
Les described them perfectly: Jay has this slick bunny hop type of bounce to his playing, where as Herb's playing is reminiscent of a giant gorilla stomping through the forest.
Nice job noticing his bass, he currently uses a custom line of basses he and a friend from high-school put together called Pachyderm. Previously he used few custom commissioned basses from a Luthier named Carl Thompson, which are ugly, yet incredible quality.
Kinda sorta... But as we said in the video, I think we simply misjudged the style and genre. But now we know that they're way cool. Thanks for watching. 🤘
Oh it sounds like this, Oh it sounds like that. The hell are you guys on? Claypool's style is totally unique. A true artist. Also you picked a goofy video to view of this song.
@@UnhingedReactions 30+ years ago I wondered why Nirvana got all the press and Primus got none. Now I know. Primus was (is) too good for the vast majority of people.
Les: "I'm going to start a band."
His dad: " But you can't sing."
Les: "Well that's not gonna matter....."
Nice!🤘
Not only is Primus the most original band, each of their albums has its own sound, Les obviously sold his soul to the devil to be the worlds best bassist.
Was he introduced by Robert Plant?

They are a must to witness live. Killer show from beginning to end.
I saw them opening for Rush. What a night!
this is the Damn Truth
You're god damned right.
This has Tom Waits on the studio version. Which is how I discovered Tom.
Well, so now you won't be missing him at all!😎 Thanks for watching.🤘
Primus has been my favorite band since 1997, when I was 14.
The whole band is phenomenal, but Ler LaLonde does not get enough credit. He's an amazing guitarist and I always love Tim Alexanders drumming.
The bass is so good that you dont notice the wookie playing drums.
Primus would take on serious topics as well, but still with their own style. check out Too Many Puppies or Lacquer Head for some of that stuff.
Bob and Mrs.Blaileen too
Brad Toler like the entire Pork Soda/Seas albums! (American Life and Bob from Pork Soda)
Listen to the album, Green Naughyde. Nearly every song on that album is about a serious issue.
@@robmccann689 Lee van Cleef...

I lov primus my 11 yr old granddaughter can't get over her grandma singing tommy the cat. She's like grandma how do keep up?
"Jill's on Smack" by Primus...live version.
I love that you guys have intelligent, in-depth thoughts and conversations about this. So much better than other Primus reactions I've seen. Keep up the great work!
Tom Waits did the spoken word part on the album version!!!!!
I have met Les. He is a super nice person. One of the greatest famous musicians I have ever met.
I saw them open for Rush in Germany back in the ‘90’s. God that was an epic show.
I too loved the bass. I have more trouble hearing his lyrics, but I think his lyrics would definitely be worth hearing.
They are. Some of his lyrics have super serious meaning, even if they’re delivered in a non serious way
This was the song that was played at the battle of the bands before bill and ted in the movie bill and teds excellent adventure.most people dont realize they have been around that long
Les credits Larry Graham of Sly and The Family Stone and Geddy Lee of Rush as his greatest bass influences, and The Isley Brothers as his greatest musical influence as a whole
Check out Tim Alexander in his drum solo on this song, the original primus drumer, I think that his is one of the greatest drummers out there.
HA HA! Guys I fucking love it!! The comparison to Zappa is about the best compliment possible! NEXT....”Lee Van Cleef” MUST be next!

I was at Bonnaroo for this exact performance. Man, what a fuckin set
The Residents are another influence for the quirkiness. Primus covers Hello Skinny/ Constantinople on Frizzle Fry.
Hello Skinny/Constantinople is definitely an underrated cover
Les slaps the shit outta from that bass. He's an alien.
Same concert primus did a song called electric grapevine it is amazing

Y'all digging this, try "Little Fishes" or "Blood and Rockets" (Live at The Current) from the Claypool Lennon Delirium.
Yes, seeing Les and John Lennon’s son make music is amazing for sure... you can hear Johns influences....
A truly rousing rendition of Tommy the Cat.
I appreciate the Monty Python reference.
Nice reaction. Primus is awesome!
Check out "Jilly's On Smack" from the same concert.

Larry lelonde would be one of the most famous guitar players in history, if he weren't in a band with Les Claypool.
Brother. He uses the mic like Mark Sandman from Morphine.
say baby...... say baby
The small 🎤 he is singing into is a nod to Mark Sandman from Morphine.
I highly recommend checking out "Primus - One Better live at bonaroo" .
It's basically like a live jam during the actual song and it's seriously good.
Guys, react to Primus with Buckethead!
Or Les Claypool (bass legend) with Buckethead !
Thankfully it's not to late. I tell everyone you have to see them live! Best jam band ever!
The hardest song to play and sing that I know of
I've always seen a lot of Zappa like aspects in them too. I am not a big fan of either; but, I really respect a lot about both acts.
Very avant-garde
, for sure.
you want amazing primus? South Bound Pachyderm, the long live version.
It looks like the guy on the right is staring lovingly at the gent to the left and I know that's just a camera thing but it's awkward without context
Love is a many-splendored thing.🤘
On sailing the seas of cheese, Tom Waits does the Tommy's monologue.
Whaaaaaat?!
No, he doesn't.
@@elbruces He's literally credited for it.
So weird yet so cool
The Story of My Life😎🤘
John the Fisherman off of the Frizzle Fry album is great.
I’m waiting for y’all to pick up on the Stanley Clarke influence......
I wannahear it again
If you wanna see some crazy bass stuff check out Victor Wooten just absolutely killin it doing Sinister Minister.
🤟😎🤟
Next I suggest you listen to Damn Blue Collard Tweekers or My Name is Mud.

Best song about tom waits evah.
I think most probably Les influenced Flea not the other way around.
Tomato tomato. 🤘
I wonder why nobody reacts to that simply hilarious music video that came with this song.
