    Very good Hamza! You just described my entire career in 6 min. Now I'd like to know how to make this work for myself in becoming a contractor in the functional role.

      Thank you for the really nice comment! I'm glad we share our career path in common. I also looked into becoming a contractor at one point and watched several udemy courses. Are you thinking of being a contractor on your own or joining a consulting company?

    Hey, Hamza. Great video! I can see how there can be a lot of confusion between the IT team and the business team. It seems like a lot of the times there can be information lost in translation but it's nice to know that the analysts are properly trained and equipped to help break down that information into layman's terms. Thanks!

    Hey Hamza, thanks for posting this video. You have an easy manner and are very articulate. I feel that most people in India feel that a business analyst needs to be a technical person who has moved to an analyst position. This is true in India especially. Overseas for example in Australia pure business people also become business analysts. That may have something to do with the fact that Australia has such few technical people. Anyway nice post for those in this domain.

      Thank you for the wonderful feedback! I am based out of the U.S. and also feel that good BA also have technical background. We do have a lot of business people with no technical background going into BA roles here. It can be nice because they like writing business proposals and documentation that technical people often don't enjoy. Win win situation 😃

    Great intro, IT is too broad of a term. Definitely should have a hyphen with a specification after it. This happens in accounting too. "Hey what do you do? I am a CPA. Oh so you do taxes? No. Oh you do auditing? No. Oh you "cook the books?" No. What do you do then? I combine the conceptual aspects of account with an information technology platform to create an information system that a company can use to manage its management accounting and financial accounting needs"

    Hi Hamza, Thanks a lot for explaining everything so elaborately. I do have a question though, are business Analysts and IT consultants the same profiles? Also what is the tech involved here, as in is it just that you need to be aware of the tech stuff a bit too but you don't really have to advise on which tech stack to use or which type of server etc in order to better serve the requirement 'cause then that would be a Tech team lead's job..right?

    • @HamzaRashid
      @HamzaRashid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! IT Consulting is a broad category that encompasses business analysts, architects, even developers. Therefore, a BA can be an IT Consultant. As for the tech involved for a BA, I like to think of it as a spectrum from functional to technical. Some clients need Business Analysts that understand the business functions and process really well and can translate that into requirements while being technology agnostic. However, I often work with clients that need a business analyst that can guide them with technical things as well. Sometimes this means that I have to raise concern if I think the technical solution picked by the tech lead isn’t going to solve our needs. A technical Business Analyst is working on behalf of the project sponsor so they have to be able to know enough about the tech to bridge the gaps between the technical and business teams. So a BA might not be advising on which tech stack to use but they should be able to evaluate whether that tech stack picked by the team will meet their needs based on their knowledge of both technical limitations and business needs. You might find this video helpful for a more functional Business Analyst role:

    Are transitions to different fields of consulting common? Eg. IT consulting to management consulting.

    • @HamzaRashid
      @HamzaRashid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, sometimes there are overlaps of roles and other times it could be for career growth. A technical consultant could pick up project management skills and lead a technical team. In my opinion, it's easier to go from IT Consulting to management consulting rather than the other way around. Much easier to learn how to run a requirements gathering session instead of becoming an experienced programmer/ network engineer.

    Hey, Hamza. Really nice video and helped me to understand the difference between Fun and Tech in IT company roles. Recently I moved from Pharma industry project manager (10 yrs exp of Developing Medicines Projects as a PM) to IT Service company on Scrum Master Role. Now, My Boss told me that you take BA training and help team in some work. I don't have any technical Knowledge of IT and How my team is working technically- Tester, Developer etc. Can you please help me to just give Overview of things which for me as a PM must know and will help me in career. I can pay your fee for that, no worries.

    What about implementation consultant
    I got a job with this title and want to know more do i need only to code or to analysis data or to talk to clients ! What exactly i will do if you know
    Thnaks in advance

    • @HamzaRashid
      @HamzaRashid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Samir, Congrats on the new job! Are you working for a consulting company that writes custom applications or implements off the shelf products? in SDLC Implementation is usually the last step after they've developed and tested the code. So you most likely won't be coding but might have to support various tasks like managing all the tasks are taken care of. However, if they have not started the analysis, design, and development, then you'll probably be acting more like a business/systems analyst that is responsible for making sure the system gets implemented according to the requirements. If you can find out more about which stage the project is at and let me know, I can give you a better idea.

      From the description i will provide solutions and maintain Analytics tracking solutions.
      Coallaborate with site developers to modify the existing tagging infrastructure with tag management.
      And debug implementation problems....
      Now iam a full stack developer.. but i don't want the opportunity to go away and in the same time maybe i like to work as implementation consultant more! Iam confused :)

    • @HamzaRashid
      @HamzaRashid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like maintenance type work. No harm in trying it for a little bit if it helps you learn a new system. However, if you want to grow your technical skills then you'll have to seek ways to take on more dev work. Debugging is a great way to learn the system.

    Functional is rapidly getting overrun by technicals ... Soon there will not be a functional roles as everyone transiting to full stake development where a developer does everything in entire SDLC from req. gathering to deployment

    • @HamzaRashid
      @HamzaRashid  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting observation. Please share more on why you think that so we can all learn. There is also a low code and no code movement that is allowing business users to do more technical things without needing to code. Roles are constantly evolving.

    • @myvu394
      @myvu394 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HamzaRashid point is if you are only functional you are bound to be under a technical resource as per Industry rule... I seen this for 16 years in my career and an analyst is not respected in industry and paid half of what dev gets... Further you are most vulnerable towards hostile takeover of your profile by technical team members as they can atleast pretend that they can do analyst work as it is low skill work but an analyst can not even dream to code ... I have been facing this since entire career and it is not a welcome situation at all ...
