The tinted glasses he wore only first appeared in mid 1963, up until that point he wore no glasses or regular glasses.. Its strange that he's so well known for a look he adopted after being a major hit maker for 3 year's.. His biggest hits were from 1960-64
How is it possible that we went from such beautiful, soulful, and pure talent and artistry in our music to the pure unadulterated garbage that is music today? I ask you.
Well, here's some information that is hard to believe but not surprising re: the "garbage" that passes for "music" today, especially (C)rap. In the mid 80s the government decided to privatized the prison industry and the investors who took it over needed to make sure that the prison cells remained full all the time. So, they did some research and discovered that young people were heavily influenced by popular music. After further research they realized that "RAP music", with it's obscene lyrics/message that most promoted crime, violence and anti-social behavior fit the bill. So, these investors contacted the bigs in the music industry and set up a special meeting. In that meeting, these investors TOLD the music industry execs that they had better start pushing (C)RAP to the public or "else" in order to encourage violent behavior among America's youth, leading to more arrests and incarceration...in the now privatized prison system! And here we are, nearly 40 years later with crime running rampant, prison cells staying full and the privatized prisons investors pockets' full.
Mein Idol roy er wird es immer bleiben höre ihn fast täglich,,seine stimme so ein sympathischen Menschen bekommen wir nicht wieder er war super,,Dankeschön roy,❤
Roy had chronic astigmatism so he did need glasses, while on a U.K. tour with the Beatles in 1963 he had left his regular glasses on a plane right before the tour, he had the dark glasses with him and decided to keep wearing them. Of course many people initially assumed he was blind.
Which is very odd seeing he'd been around making records since 1956 and super stardom as a hit maker was from 1960-64, when he had most of his huge hits. So the trademark dark glasses came late in his career
The audiences clapping wrong (on 1 & 3) kills me; it kills the song. These squares have got to stop. I love Roy Orbison, and this song, with its odd count and through composed form, was a game changer in the history of rock n roll.
Great job!! … This beautiful song can be played on your “EastTop harmonica" in the key of “F” …. Go ahead and play along with this great song. Eli: "King of Rock & Roll Harmonica"
Much better that you get to see the full performance of the song, when I have sene it before, the first chorus is cut out, and picks up before Roy Orbison starts to sing or pretty much lip synch
Maybe it's just imagination, but he looks like he feels a little silly having to lip sync it - especially for such a great talent who could always sing his songs live with no problem.
Actually, I don’t think he’s lip synching. I believe this is a live recording. It was quite common to have the singer up front, and the band somewhere backstage in the background. The microphone for Roy can be outside the frame above him. Just listen to Roy’s singing. It’s not the same as on the record.
@@MoogerTuber It's mimed to the record. At some point ownership of Roy's recording masters went into limbo so he had to re-record all his old hits. Maybe you're familiar with one of those later era re-recordings. This is the original record.
@@lindalcoomes I've heard people say he "wasn't blind" but I'm not sure if they meant he wasn't totally blind. I do know he was terribly *farsighted though. Edit: meant to say far*sighted. He also had astigmatism.
@@nobodyanon … I’m pretty sure you had perfect vision….! I heard he wore the dark glasses because he did not like the way his eyes looked in photographs…! I never heard anything about him having bad vision……..!
Yep it's your imagination... He looked perfectly comfortable lip syncing here since that's the way things were done then. The set ups needed for most songs in a half hour or hour would never have been possible when you have different performers in that time space waiting for their turn. Some insisted on live only, like Jerry Lee Lewis...Ed Sullivan usually had all performers lip sync unless they needed to change a line in their song like Gary Puckett & the Union Gap did for Lady Willpower or the Stones with Let's Spend 'some time' together with Mick rolling his eyes while singing the chorus.
Don't forget this was his first appearance before the cameras, so it's not surprising he appears a little uneasy. He probably had no training beforehand on how to act in front of a national audience.
Roy Orbison💯👍🌟...Rest in peace.🌹
❤️ ROY! Great voice & this is the first performance that I ever seen without him wearing his trademark glasses! I heard that he had stage fright.
I clicked the video because of that! And the shy performance made me think about it!
Prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses. The glasses were left on a plane so he performed with the tinted glasses and it just stuck.

One of Elvis Presley's favorite singers.🎸

I love his voice , I love his songs.
Brings back memories of teenager years, great !!!!!!
What a great talent and voice

Wasn't he also terribly farsighted?

🤍SO GOOD!!! SUCH A UNIQUE VOICE. THANKS TO MY HUSBAND, I KNOW ABOUT ROY ORBISON. HE LOOKS JUST FINE WITHOUT HIS GLASSES..
Can't believe it is same person, amazing
I love he added his own sparkle - the black hair changing length, the glasses and his black wardrobe. Sexy without really trying.
SUBLIME MELODIE!!!!! 👍😍😍😍😍

Not Roy Orbison or Buddy Holly lip synced on Ed Sullivan
😊📀😳😞😭
Year please.
Eso es tener VOZ.
What year is this?
It is 1960
Who is that guy? Where the heck is Roy Orbison himself?
This is a young, fresh faced 24 year old Orbison before he donned his signature black sunglasses and black "rinse" and conquered his stage fright.
Don't forget this was his first appearance before the cameras, so it's not surprising he appears a little uneasy. He probably had no training beforehand on how to act in front of a national audience.

Probably wore the shades because of all the bullies/karens in the USA.
That had to be lip-synched.
