    After nearly 40 years in the business its time for Jack to climb into a brand new Peterbilt. This truck was built to his own personal specifications with a C15 Caterpillar engine and Allison automatic transmission.

    Beautiful truck and fantastic engine/tranny combo! An Eaton 18 speed is cool and all, but I personally like the fact that the engine brake is on at all times when slowing down with the automatic.

    All the people hating on wether it's a manual or not. You know people it doesn't define one's masculinity wether it's transmissions in pickups or tractor trucks, whatever one drives is what one likes and fines practical for their specific job. Anyways beautiful sounding CAT, I don't know if you can even get them ordered in the 389's anymore?

    Enjoyed the ride along. Good luck to Larry and the new Pete. Those side dumps amaze me. No one here on the east coast of Canada uses them. I've never really seen one, and I've been at this trucking thing longer than Larry !! Thanks for the video.

      AlaskaTrucker They are very popular in Australia when they are in road train configuration. They have 4 trailers on the public highway and up to 7 trailers on mine roads. They've been used for years. The hydraulics are controlled by electric over hydraulic switches and don't seem to give much problems. You don't want to flick the wrong switch with 4 trailers though.

    Pretty awesome video. Not sure how long you've been in Alaska. I use to go trucking with Scott Mcleoud as a kid growing up. Snowman, chicken, slam dunkin truckin, all were rollin back then. Also, as for the automatic comments, all of Weaver Brothers new Kenworth T800's are automatic. Some of those guys have been trucking their whole life, you don't see them complaining

      Born here and Scott, Chicken Man, Slam and Snowman are all still rollin'.
      I rent a parking space from Snowman.

      Not sure but I think when GM took the last bail-out that they were forced to sell Alison, Terex, Delco, AC, Rochester and several others.
      I know they sold Detroit Diesel to Roger Penske several years ago and that Mercedes owns it now - DDC or Detroit Diesel Corporation ( I think ).
      Back when I was a kid I stayed on top of all that stuff but am really out of the loop now.
      Thanks for watching!

    Awesome truck! How many horsepower in that C15? Also, is this transmission truly automatic, with torque converter, or rather an automated one, a conventional type with clutch that changes gears automatically?

    • @AlaskaTrucker
      @AlaskaTrucker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +RangelSotero
      I believe the engine was over 600hp at first but was later turned down during the building of the truck to keep warranty on the transmission.
      Yes, its an Allison automatic - like a car.
      One of the things they really struggled with during construction of the truck was calibrating the engine to the transmission, it took some very gifted people to accomplish that I guess.
      They did an outstanding job.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @Roddy_Zeh
      @Roddy_Zeh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AlaskaTrucker Outstanding indeed! And, correct me if I'm wrong...Peterbilt isn't offering the 389's with CAT engines as option anymore? At least according to what I saw in their website, only Cummins and Paccar MX as option now. Therefore you gotta literally custom order one specifically for yourself...

    • @AlaskaTrucker
      @AlaskaTrucker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +RangelSotero
      You are correct. The truck was a new glider kit that was custom built by a specialties shop, to my brothers exact specifications. He was there on the shop floor every step of the way as the truck was being built.
      He played with the idea of installing a 1693 for a long time and even found a brand new one on ebay but then opted for the C15 because of fuel economy and engine weight - the 1693 is very heavy.
      This truck is literally his "ship of dreams".

    • @Roddy_Zeh
      @Roddy_Zeh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      AlaskaTrucker Well, I think he made a good choice XD Congrats for the project! :) How many gears in the Allison, BTW? :P

  • @curtiswickman9429

    Where did u have your glider built
    That's an old school cat no doubt

    • @AlaskaTrucker
      @AlaskaTrucker  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Curtis Wickman
      Just talked to my brother Jack and he tells me this:
      Fletcher's Diesel in Palmdale Ca built the engine and assembled the Glider - 100% craftsmanship! The glider kit was purchased from Butch Wood at DSU Peterbilt in Oregon. Dartco Transmissions did the Alison automatic transmission, they are located in Anaheim Ca.
      The truck is better than Jack had hoped for and he loves the Cat retarder. The only downside is that Fletcher's Diesel does have a back-log because of their superior workmanship. Jack says that the truck even hold air for two days. Its a beautiful truck. - whoever said "Business and sentiment don't mix" - never drove a Peterbilt.

      AlaskaTrucker Goes to show that even with the crazy emissions laws we have here in Cali, we still crank out the good stuff! Just have to look in the right places. A glider is the way to go nowadays, longer engine life and better build quality!

      That's a good question.
      Unfortunately they don't always stay up-right, sometimes the whole truck goes with the load - especially when hauling thick, heavy mud that sticks to the inside of the trailer tub.
      That's why most of the trailers are three and four axle - they're more stable which helps. Thanks for watching.

    Automatic? Come on man!

    • @AlaskaTrucker
      @AlaskaTrucker  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Its not an easy idea to get your head around at first, I know.
      But the automatic pulls like a D-9 cat in the fill and it stops the truck better on hi-way with the jake brake also , with less wear on the drive-train.
      The automatic reduces driver fatigue and also lasts longer than a gear-to-gear box.
      Once you've had one you never go back, they tell me.
      They're spendy little shits though.

    • @GOLTURBO555
      @GOLTURBO555 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AlaskaTrucker indeed, I agree with you... but, straight piped, its a pleasure to goin thru the gears man, and with "reduces driver fatigue" for one side! becausa u will stay with the two hand at drive wheel all the time, could mess up with ur back, or fall asleep during long trips... I'm sorry, but nothing like a 18 speed.

      Its different when you go from traffic light to traffic light to traffic light like we do all day. But yeah Im with ya, Im still running a 13 and a 4 with my unit and like to shift - most of the time.
      I think Jack misses shifting sometimes, hes been in a truck for 40 years now and it gets ingrained.

    No place for automatic transmissions in trucking,in my opinion. I hope I am never asked to drive one. Sad to see it in this style truck.

      ...I used to feel the same way...but after running heavy equipment which is all torque converter equipped...I changed my mind...I'm retired...but if I wasn't...I definitely would like to own an Allison equipped Pete just like in the video...
