I have been driving trucks for 35 years. This year I am getting a Mack with an auto trans. I wouldnt trade it for anything. Auto's are sweet!! They have come a long ways.

I been driving manuals for 20 years, my new job and truck is a Volvo automatic. it nice plenty of torque and it progressive shifts even with a load. it senses how much power to put down. the mileage was better than my manual shift Volvo at my other job. the jake takes getting used its progressive and has cruise bake it'll hod speed down a hill. READ MANUAL BEFORE GOING DOWN A GRADE.after I read it I understood it.

Good info. No training for these so just needed to know how it works. Backing is more of an effort on the ones i've driven, especially in building/hooking sets of trailers.

I love the autos I went for a test drive in a tractor with no trailer I tried driving a stick I could not get the hang of it but then the sales man gave me an automated manual

You can see its almost Stuff on your Dash from the 2009 Mercedes Benz Actros European Truck. Its Shifts exactly like the German Truck.

still GRC you are right but the dash is definite from a 2012 actros and the gearshifter to (actros mp4) the steering wheel is from the actros from 2009 but the auto from mercedes sucks in my opinion there are better ones like zf as or i shift

Companies are programming these trucks to stay in economy mode and it really makes them unsafe. By unsafe I mean they go into neutral or idle as I'm driving at highway speeds, and when I need to accelerate the tractor keeps short shifting leaving me in a precarious situation😖

All the equipment in this truck will be instantly familiar to any European driver who has worked in a Mercedes truck. The design of the steering wheel and the gear lever are identical as are the switches.
With regard to use of the auto function the first thing every driver should do before they drive anywhere is Please - RTFM! There is a publication in the literature pack that comes with any new vehicle - trucks included - called the Driver Handbook. Naturally being professional drivers we all think we know everything, right? What, even the newest scientific developments that are just coming to the market in the US? You are still catching up with Europe.
One small correction to this video - and don't get me wrong this is a good explanation as far as it goes - these are not automatic gearboxes. They are properly called 'automated manuals' and are identical to the boxes you heroes have ben shifting with a stick all these years. The only difference is that the control system has been changed. You no longer have control of the clutch. (It's still there - ask a mechanic!) You do have control of everything else though if you so choose. You can take this truck and select Manual mode and drive just the same as you used to. You select D, let it choose the starting gear, or override the choice if you are convinced you know best, and apply throttle to move off. In that Manual mode you then pull the lever towards you - just like the paddle shift in a race car - and change up one or more gears at a time.
The more relaxd way though is to use Auto Economy and let the truck worry about the gears to choose and when to shift. As you drive the secret is throttle finesse. The truck will learn your preference for when you want to change up by your lifting the throttle just a tiny amount at the point where you want the next gear. It's really spooky at first but within a day or 2 it is second nature.
As for going downhill you use the exhaust brake and the service brake and the gearbox computer will select the appropriate gear and so keep the engine RPM up high enough to maintain control. If you want more engine braking then if you push the lever away from you even without selecting Manual mode the gearbox will react and change down. Normally at the point where the box goes into Manual mode you will see small arrows on your dash display beside the M to indicate how many gears you can select below the one currently selected.
I've been driving since 1978 in the UK and I wouldn't think of choosing a manual gearbox for any reason.
In Europe these automated manuals are already being replaced on lighter trucks by proper automatics which have no clutch and much fewer gears. They are using torque converters for propulsion and electrical regenerative braking systems which have been fitted to European coaches for years.
Incidentally as far as scientific progress is concerned trucks are leading the way in terms of engine development but the cutting edge of gearbox technology is in agricultural tractors which commonly have about 6 clutches and up to 50 different gears.
Anybody who tells you these vehicles are dangerous or that you have no control is a dinosaur.

These transmission suck in downhill driving....I had the computerized shifter freeze up on me when I was trying to "manually" downshift to hold back my 80,000lb beast coming down Donner Summit on Interstate 80. engine brake and service brakes were having a hard time without the transmission being able to downshift, and getting hot. needless to say, I had my seatbelt off and door ajar, ready to jump out!!!

Does this mean you don't have to use your left foot at all? Seeing as I'm missing my left leg above the knee, this would make things a lot easier. When I'm driving a long distance, I'd like to take my leg off as it's more comfortable.

Been driving 30 years the only thing i dont like about the automatic is in the snow when your stopped in snow its easy to get stuck its hard to rock back and forth to get unstuck. I work a lot of of city pickup and delivery i like the automatic cruising down the open road its easy. i used to have a truck back 25 plus years ago with no jake brake fully loaded going down Donner no problem. Now the old truck drivers will tell you without a jake apply a lite even steady pressure on the brakes going down the mountain. But do they make over the road trucks without jakes anymore. Oh yea i have driven an 18 speed before but its been awhile..
Bruce Wallace He explains that in a previous video. The jake brake is on the column shift and you can shift manually when you want to.

I've been driving manuals for 24years & I'm about to get my first Autoshifter. All sounds nice, except one thing... Safety. On snowy/slick roads if or when you break traction & start spinning. In a manual all you have to do is clutch it, break power to the drive train & save yourself. What do you do in an auto? Can you put it into neutral without hitting the brakes? whats the protocol for spin outs? Thanks

I drove "Real Trucks" back in the 90s and don't even have a CDL today. Does an automatic transmission automatically downshift on a grade or does this require driver input? If manually downshifting, do you have to match engine RPM and road speed in order for the transmission to catch the next lower gear?

I just got out of CDL SCHOOL I truly don't feel safe driving stick, I am looking for companies that use trucks with Automatic transmissions. driving sticks shift to me is like taking a piss standing up and sneezing at the same time, it makes you splash all over. So, I want to take the shifting out of the equation and focus on my safety and the safety of others. Anybody knows what companies use automatic trucks? thanks
I am a recent grad and I know exactly how you feel.
+Ahmed Mejdoubi ...Almost all companies are buying new semi trucks with automatics. I talk to many drivers daily, and I see automatics in probably 50% of the 2015 and 2016 trucks sold. They get better mileage, and they are safe. You will drive the automatic better, but you definitely want to learn how to drive the manual trucks safely too. There is a learning curve, usually about 1 year. I can drive a manual now so smooth, I can't believe it. Keep practicing and driving and driving and driving. Lol! Every driver EVER, has shifted like crap, grinded gears, and drove horrible in the beginning. Good luck!

NICE! I'VE BEEN THINKING OF BECOMMING A TRUCK DRIVER. One thing that has made me reluctant though is all that shifting. Might these new automatic transmissions become standard in future trucks? Also, technology has brought about the autonomous (self driving) cehiclrs including trucks. How may this affect truckers jobs? May they end up out of work?

I drive 2,900 miles a week, on the average. I have it nailed down to SLC, Utah to Phoenix, AZ, and back. Then I'm home mid-week, and the weekends, etc.
That's not considered driving ( automatic ) that's called cruising, roflmao

I love the automatic transmission and all that which I'm thinking to get one but umm how do you go downhill with it like...just manually shift to a lower gear and jake brake? Pablo Salinas when you have an auto and want to engine brake the system is detecting that and automaticly shifting down like on the last retarder position
He explains it all in a previous video. Your jake brake is on the shifter and you can manually shift.

Chris Hornback Good question Chris, because there are many different amounts. A good used Freightliner Cascadia will be $75,000-$90,000 2011 or so. New all the way up to $125,000+... Most drivers start at a company like Pride or CR England, and get experience. Then the larger money is in owner-operator, maybe go to Paccar and see about leasing a used truck. Transporting vehicles usually makes more money than hauling freight. Tons of options out there once you get 2 years of clean safe driving under your belt...

this automatic transmission is on our mercedes truck in Europe, it s an very ecologic transmission because it s do necessary to keep engine rpm at 1 000 rpm, it s better for fuel saving. American truck driver with manual transmission keep their rpm at 1 500 it s not good, normally the green rpm is between 1 000 and 1 500 rpm we use it for torque and strong.
I’m new to trucking (haven’t got my CDL yet), still taking driving lessons with a 10-speed stick shift truck and I find it very challenging to shift the gear and make sure I’m in the right road speed engine RPM and all this. My equation, will it be better for me to switch to automatic to make it easier for me to pass the road test and worry about manual shifting later? Please advise.
You can't take a CDL test on an automatic.
Dan Gabbay Recently failed the drive test twice in a manual even though at school I drove it almost perfect, being nervous and shifting didn't mix well. So I'm switching to automatic so I can pass this time and not have to worry about stalling out or missing gears. Just will get a restriction on your license if testing in automatic.
If I'd had that I might not have flipped my semi loaded with flat screen TVs from Japan.

Oh, you've gotta be kiddin' me! That's just about as "manual"-sounding as film-look video looks like film! Oh dear! Gone are the days when no matter what was being driven, you could tell if it was an automatic or manual just by hearing how it sounds as it's upshifting! This transmission is definitely not planetary.
So it makes me wonder, now, just how many more of these automatic semitrucks there are out there now than I thought, just because of how they trick my hearing! Ughh...!

Well, if they're automatic, Varinki, then they're not manual. My guess is that what you *really* meant to say is that most semi-truck automatics are more *like* traditional manual transmissions. Right?
+MaxxFordham Pretty much this style of transmission is known as an Automated Manual Transmission. Most car automatics use planetary gearsets and a torque converter. Allison automatics are like car automatics.
Well, Varinki, other than the random capitals (what were those supposed to be for?), I've heard that term thrown around before, but it's really unnecessary, and practically a misnomer:
1. Anything that's been automated is automatic (or at least semiautomatic).
2. Just because a transmission uses shift-collars and forks instead of planetary gears and clutch packs and/or bands doesn't mean it's manual.
3. Yeah, most car automatics are planetary, but DCTs and CVTs are also called automatic. Of course the 3 can be differentiated between those 2 and planetary when differentiation is important; otherwise nobody needs to call the 2 new kinds "automated manual."
So for some reason, the only kind of automatic transmission I've ever heard of for semitrucks are this kind and the kind that's just like this but which still has a manual clutch (outdated now because of this one). Then the Allisons are on fire trucks, full-sized buses, and maybe some others like some dump trucks and some concrete trucks. So why don't they put Allisons in semitrucks? Are their clutch discs just not strong enough? What about hooking one of those up to an automatic dry clutch instead of a torque converter?
+MaxxFordham The Allisons are six speed so they need the torque converter to get moving and to cover the big gaps between the gears.
I was looking up some details on the Allison automatics and one person had commented that there were several semi tractors with Allison automatics where he worked and that in that case they had been selected for their durability. he also stated that compared to a manual those trucks tended to run hotter and use more fuel.
