I think these simple commanders will appeal to established players more than you think. A lot of players, myself included, like having some simpler decks in their collection to pull out later in the night after you’ve already played some of your more complex ones. These commanders will make for great “I want to play Magic but I’m tired from a long shift and don’t want to think too hard” decks as well as “I don’t want to play a pure precon but I want something around that power level” decks.
Having some simple but solid mono-colored commanders is a great addition to the format. Making manabase building simple on its own is a huge plus for new players both by making the deck cheaper through using a bunch of basics for the land and also easy in that you don't have to get the ratios of mana right for multicolored decks.
I wish WotC would at least acknowledge and thank the EDH/Commander community/content creators for giving them every single idea they’ve ever had for the last 4-5 years. They can’t come up with 1 original idea to save their asses. Especially judging by their postponing of Return to Lorwyn in place of Marvel UB.
The Starter Set also comes with a side set of Sol Ring, Command Tower, and Arcane Signet (not Standard legal, of course) - so, yeah, they're dual-loading bringing people on board.
I think it’s smart to add more legendary creatures that add support to less common creature types. Yugioh is famous for it’s power creep, but I do appreciate it’s retro card support that gets printed for older “archetypes” in order to have wider appeal, and I think that Magic can benefit from the same design strategy
Honestly I'm just glad in this set they finally printed a legendary skeleton that actually does skeleton things. Tinybones is discard or theft, Skithiryx is infect, and Bladewing is zombies. Don't even get me started on Skeleton Ship and Uchenbak.
While it is a lot of new commander saturation, I am genuinely loving every single new commander option. They all look super fun and the simplistic design feels like a breath of fresh air compared to all the new legendary creatures in other sets. Dionus is especially a very sleeper commander. It doubles all your elf mana dork production, it goes infinite with any flicker/bounce effect, and can be used to make an elf vehicle/convoke deck.
I was noticing that, and it might even help to shut down someone else's typal deck. Sorry, your Crested Sunmares and tokens they made aren't indestructible, because they're not horses anymore. I think that's how it works, anyway, since it also doesn't say "in addition to their other types".
I think it helps you to make a deck without having to reach too much. I mean, you can just focus on the insects, or pegasi, but if you need more options, you can include worms or horses without feeling too bad about it.
@@shorewall yeah that too. I'm just glad they essentially eliminate "chose a type"-tribal cards, which are usually so strong that they are autoincludes in every tribal deck
Hurska is pretty cool with Druid Class affects. Put a land down, gain a life, pay for trigger with said land. If you have multiple land drops per turn it’s even better.
I've actually wanted a combined horse, horned horse, and flying horse themed commander for a while! So I'm interested in Thurid. The thing keeping Gornog from being really powerful I think is he can only make one Coward per player per turn, and only by having a creature attack. So you either need favorable attacks already *before* your commander makes them better, or have a way to make disposable tokens. And the onboard limit to how big your creatures get is how many creatures your opponents control. For a lot of these typal lord commanders from Jumpstart I'm assuming a lot of those types will be included in that half-deck, so any commander deck you build with it will probably have a good number of synergistic cards already. So that's a bonus for first time deckbuilders. Like just from incomplete Scryfall data there are 29 mono-red Warriors revealed so far in J25.
I think Dionus is a bit of a sleeper. She is basically a mana doubler out of the command zone while growing the elf army and then gives those elves sudo-vigilance after you don't need the mana
They're definitely intro cards. Rev is just a less Etrata or Sultai Gonti. Same damage = theft, but without the multi-colors to help her actually deal damage or the thematic Rogue Class card. I'll probably slot her in the 99 of a Prosper or Gonti deck though. Fumulus is badass though. I'm not sure if he's effective, but he's so cool. Snake girl sounds fun, but kinda meme.
Like like it. I've played mtg since 96 and it's refreshing to see some return to the basics. Not every commander needs to be 3+ colors and 10 lines of keyword soup.
@edhdeckbuilding With Wotc seeing a rise in players outside of Magic with Universes Beyond, I wouldn't be shocked. It's also worth noting the rise in popularity of alternate art reprints that are anime influenced. They are highly sought chase cards that sell for a high price.
Hello there, As to why, anime has become a lot more mainstream and less stigmatized in the last decade. If we follow Wizards track record and their recent anouncements, combined with how popular and expensive anime treatments were, its only logical for them to move in that direction. More and more, they view the game as a ruleset and philosophy rather than the ip it was built on. They are simply catering to what will bring in more players. Yugioh is more kid friendly. It may be why the art is similar. I dont like this direction. I don't like being taken advantage of monetarily and being forgotten in the pursuit of profits. For me, it's simple, dont buy any cards that rub you the wrong way. Don't spend on products that you dont want to see. I may not change the direction, but at least I'm not a tool.

Pol Jamaar, the new leader that can lead my Spawn Typal deck to victory! As soon as they print more than one Spawn. And that one can just shoot you in the face and die. Still! The groundwork is laid.
Dionus 6:15 seems kind of crazy to me: every Elf gets it's own an untap ability and then gets a +1/+1 counter? That seems crazy powerful. Every Elf that has a tap ability can now do it twice each turn? Or they all have pseudo-vigilance when attacking? Isn't Dionus an auto-include in every Elf deck now?
One of the biggest issues I have with the Commander boom is that being multi-colored or being a Legendary creature used to be a DOWNSIDE. Now both are UPSIDES.

Yeah, I usually like when they make alternative anime art for some cards because they an bring people who can give some different and unique spin on the standard Magic art, but those (except the insect and beast ones, I guess?) feel so uninspired, as if the artists didn't have the proper time or direction to do something interesting and had to go for the lowest hanging fruit. It feels more like the idea people who don't like anime art has of anime art, instead of the actual thing
i noticed that most of these are uncommons in rarity. it feels like a list for some monocoloured pauper edh commanders to boost the format, paired with the simplicity of the creatures
As far as Pegasus Tribal goes... You said yourself that the best pegasus cards are TOKEN generators. So copying a Pegasus spell is actually pretty useless. All the pegasus spells are no good. Being able to copy the unicorn and Horse spells gives a chance at a good deck here.

Hey man, i cant help but notice that you are still saying "tribal" and not "kindred" when referring to creatures that share a creature type. Wotc officially changed how they name things and the words they put on cards and it seems many people find the word "tribal" when referring to a group of elves or goblins etc. as either incorrect (at its least offensive) or just actually offensive (at its worst) to people who use the language around "tribe" or "tribal". I live in a part of the country with many indigenous people and while that kind of change might not mean much to us white guys, it makes an actual difference to some people. If it was purely performative i really wouldnt give a shit, but knowing it makes a difference is the only reason i decided to speak up. Maybe that entire approach is just flawed though, im willing to admit i was off base entirely but i guess im just hoping im not. but like, even if its cringe, is it really that bad to show people that you care? i dont think so. we're playing a childrens card game after all, you can go be "cool" elsewhere
@@firstandlast.1254 okay if its so fine why doesnt wotc use it anymore? were they told by historically oppressed groups that language hurts them? yes, so they changed. if you dont want to be a part of that change you dont have to be, but you will certainly not be a part of my gathering. which again, is fine and not the end of the world. i also wrote it out the way i did because i didnt want to assume anything from demo, ignorance is not inherently a bad thing
No one at my LGS calls it kindred and I play at the biggest LGS in the country. I've only ever heard it called kindred from people in comment sections 😭 bunch of freaks
