@@ZondaFRoadster We had so much fun with Christmas Carol that there was no way we would turn a blind eye to Treasure Island. We're just happy our Patrons voted for it so quickly. Thanks for watching.

"I thought pirates had talking parrots as pets." "Talking... parrots?" "What an imagination. First pirates, now talking parrots, what's next - a singing, dancing mouse with his own amusement park?" Fun Fact: Tim Curry had been a huge fan of the Muppets for years before doing this movie. He has stated in many interviews that he regards Captain Long John Silver as one of his favorite roles. Tim Curry was given a Muppet made in the likeness of him as Long John Silver after shooting was completed. Like A Baby Fact: Producer and director Brian Henson was nervous that the whole cast and crew would get motion sick as the ship rolled on the gimbals. He gave everyone seasickness pills for the first day of the shoot and not only did the cast and crew not get seasick, but they almost fell asleep on the job. Wonderful Oz Fact: Frank Oz was reportedly not originally a fan of Fozzie Bear's "Mr. Bimble" (the man who lived inside of Fozzie's finger). However, by the end of filming, Oz decided that it was one of his favorite jokes. Frank Oz was unable to perform and puppeteer his signature characters of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Sam the Eagle since he was busy directing Bowfinger (1999). Kevin Clash took over principle puppeteering duties during shooting and Oz re-recorded the characters' voices in post-production. Oz had already participated in a recorded read-through of the script and Clash used these recordings to help prompt his performances. According to Clash, Oz gave him a brief description of each of his characters prior to shooting. Oz described Miss Piggy as "a truck driver wanting to be a woman" and Fozzie Bear as somebody similar to Jerry Lewis.
Told ya! "If you liked Caine as Scrooge, you'd love Curry as Long John". Thanks for taking my recommendation for the list and thanks to the committee for voting for it. Have to admit to singing Cabin Fever a few times during the lockdowns. Billy Connolly has a well known piece in his sets about being the only person to die in a Muppet movie. You said about recognising the spot from Doctor Who, it was the other way round for me, I knew it in Who because of this. Anyway. Glad you loved it, knew you would. All the best and keep up the good work xx
My only problem with this amazing film is that when Miss Piggy says "Hello, Loooong John" she manages, by tone and inflection alone, to make you 100% certain that he didn't get that nickname because he was tall. And you will never, ever, be able to get that knowledge out of your head.
Fun fact: during that scene Curry originally ad-libbed the line “Well ya know Benjamina: once you try pork, you never go back”, but Brian Henson cut it out of the film (to Curry’s chagrin). 😂
There's a meme that says Michael Caine was good as Scrooge because he regarded the Muppets as fellow actors. Tim Curry was good because he regarded himself as a fellow Muppet.
This was one of my absolute favorites as a kid, and it definitely holds up. The music slaps, the performances are great, and honestly it’s up there with Master and Commander for seafaring movies for me! (👀 another recommendation) @20:17 “I say, this does not look safe” is definitely something I say on the regular 😂
In the opening song, there is a line that says, 'every man aboard would'a killed his mate for a bag of ginnies or a piece of eight.' Out of curiosity I looked up the buying power of a piece of eight, which was a 1/8th of a Spanish silver dollar (back then coins could literally be cut into up to 8 pieces, a 1/8th being the smallest piece accepted as money). In the late 16 hundreds, a piece of eight was worth a little less than 13 US dollars in today's money. Meaning they'd kill one of their own for a little over ten bucks.
This has been my comfort movie since it came out on VHS. I hadn’t watched it in many years until I was sick last year and I somehow remembered almost every line in the script and songs. Somehow it seems like this Muppet movie has stayed under the radar, but I love when people either revisit or watch for the first time because it’s truly a great, fun film 😊
34:41 Not even Pirates of the Caribbean had such a dramatic scene of Hispaniola tacking around the cliffs, full sail, seemingly unmanned, at a tropical beach towards the antagonist.
This is one of my favorite parodies of Treasure Island other than Treasure Planet and probably my favorite Muppets movie. It’s so silly but also takes itself just seriously enough.
Such a classic. I absolutely love this movie. Someone said it best when they said Caine in Christmas Carol is on Broadway, while Tim Curry became a Muppet himself, and it's true.
As a kid my aunt got me a copy of the classic Treasure Island on VHS for either Christmas or my birthday (I can't remember), but for some reason I wasn't into it so my parents exchanged it for Muppet Treasure Island. It has always been one of my 3 favourite childhood movies alongside The Goonies and Hook. (I like Pirates!)
if I could have any clasic story done as Muppets I would want "Phantom of the Opera" but you're right, with Disney owning everything there is liraraly nothing stoping them from just making Muppet versons of all of their properties.
The "Dead men tell no tales" line was my first ever intro to the concepts of less is more and keep it vague so the mind fills the gaps. And its hard to pull off both at the same time but if anyone wouod, its the muppets.
There are live action adaptations but it's not as fun and Captain Smolett was the bad guy, Silver and Ben Gunn were Jim's allies. The muppets and comedy aside, it did do a good job at the piratey feel. It was the OG Pirates of the Caribbean.
I haven't seen Muppets From Space in so long but it was one of my favorites since I always liked Gonzo. I'd love to see your reaction to that! I enjoyed your reactions to the humor of this one and Tim Curry.
i highly recommend giving treasure planet a look! its an early 2000s disney movie that does treasure planet sincerely with a sci fi steampunk setting. muppet treasure island and treasure planet are hands down the best versions of the story (the book is admittedly pretty dull), the muppets version being a fun riot while treasure planet having some incredible sci fi spectacle and a very heartfelt emotional core
Awww, one of my childhood movies this was. And certainly gives me Pirates of the Caribbean vibes. Funny enough you saw in the credits Hanz Zimmer did composed the soundtrack for this movie before he did pirates.
once saw it described that this and crhistmas carol work so well because Michel Caine acted as if the muppets were actors and Tim Curry acted as if he was a muppet.
I love the explanation that I heard about this film and Muppet Christmas Carol and how they're able to work so well. In MCC Michael Caine acts as if *no one* is a Muppet, therefore he plays everything completely straight. In this film, Tim Curry acts as if *everyone* is a Muppet (Including himself) which is why he has this zany, madcap sense of energy.
A stealth joke that took me DECADES to catch: Dead Tom was, indeed... always dead. He wasn't even a muppet. During the roll call scene, he was being held up from behind and ventriloquist dummied by the pirate behind him. You can see the pirate behind him's mouth move when 'Dead Tom' is speaking. He was, the whole time, just a regular dusty entirely nonalive skeleton. The thing that really makes it ludicrously funny is the pirate doing the corpse ventriloquy act with Dead Tom... is the same pirate who was sobbing over his body after Long John shottim. Despite _literally being the one puppeteering Dead Tom_ he somehow _still_ had no idea Dead Tom had been dead all along. And a further layer to the absurdity and hilarity is that Dead Tom was a puppet being operated by a puppet.
I love this so much, it's one of my favourites and was my gateway into my love of pirates as a kid. I still know all the songs off by heart, really fun reaction!
Absolutely loved this movie whenI was a kid. Treasure Island was, and still is, my favorite book to read. Tim Curry definitely nails the role of a pirate. In an animated TV series decades back called Peter Pan and the Pirates, he was the voice of Captain Hook. By far, his portrayal is the closest thing to accuracy I've seen when compared to the original book.
My second favorite movie Brian Henson directed, favorite moments for me was seeing Bill Barretta and Jerry Nelson play their characters (Blind Pew, Clueless Morgan, Mad Montey and many others)
I went to the theaters to see this one. It's one of my favorites. Now I do like the Christmas Carol one but this one I really enjoyed. My favorite Muppet theatrical movie is Muppets Take Manhattan but I do enjoy the first two. They are all favorites in my heart. Cool to see someone watching a Muppet Movie for the first time. I always enjoy seeing others reactions to the Muppets. They are one of my many favorites of Jim Henson's creations.
5:20 - Jim Hawkins was not an orphan in the original story. He lived with his mother at the Admiral Benbow, which was their family inn. I guess in this film they thought being an orphan would make Jim more sympathetic. 11:36 - Hispaniola. 16:44 - Sweetums is my favorite muppet. 19:34 - This joke probably went over most people's heads. What Gonzo just described is what is known as 'keelhauling.' It was an extremely deadly punishment aboard ships. 24:04 - It's pretty obvious which scenes in this movie come directly from the book. This scene is one of the most faithfully reproduced. It's from the chapter named "What I Heard From the Apple Barrel." 29:08 - There were no natives in the original story. Piggy's role was originally a male named (big surprise) Benjamin Gunn. His story was pretty much the same and it was HIS boat Jim used to sneak back aboard the Hispaniola, not Mr. Errol's (who, of course, was actually killed by Long John in the book). 30:50 - "SAY-tan is HEA-tin' his PO-kers for ye!" My favorite line reading of the movie. The bit about the bible is from the book, too. For the record (no spoilers since you already finished the movie), the treasure is gone because Ben Gunn spent the years he was marooned on the island searching for the treasure and moving it to a new location for when he could finally escape. 35:56 - One of the best set-up jokes ever. 38:34 - Again, this scene is mostly straight from the book. The relationship between Jim and Long John is one of the book's highlights. The major difference is that Long John escapes while the Hispaniola is docked at a port on the trip back, not while they're still within spitting distance of the island. He also escapes with only a few pocketful's of gold rather than a few chests worth.
I remember seeing the trailer on the begining of an old VHS and I already laught about it but I saw the movie only a few years ago. Also, as a french, it was weird in that vidéo to hear Miss Piggy talking in french 😂 What is funny is the fact that in the french version of the Muppets Show, Kermit, the inventor and the swedish cook were voiced by the same guy (a man who voiced a lot of Disney characters too) and Miss Piggy by the same voice actress than Ursula of " The little mermaid " Fun fact : in the french version, when Rizzo finds the funny glasses, he says " Oh, all that's missing is the cigar "
A show y’all might like is ‘Black Sails’. It’s pretty much a prequel to the ‘Treasure Island’ story. Showing the fall of piracy and the rise of Long John Silver
The old pbs show "wishbone" did a treasure island story. And one of the pirates died from the black spot. And it was also even more of a kids show than this. But it didn't even phase me and i was probably around 6-7.
I completely forgot Billy Connelly was in this! Also Caine treated the Muppets as fellow cast-members. Curry treated himself as a fellow Muppet. The only man ever to out-Muppet the Muppets.
Bruh!!! I loved this Movie growing up!!! And I just found out Hans Zimmer did the score, AMAZING!!! Btw do you guys have a favorite or several favorite film composers? My top 5: 1. Lorne Balfe 2. Danny Elfman 3. Hans Zimmer 4. John Williams 5. Marco Beltrami
the best bit is when you see Tim Curry smile in his real life self when Kermit appears then slips back into pirate. why are they laughing at polly after black eyed pete does the "contender" line ?
You NEED to check out the show Black Sails! It wasn’t on a major channel so it not super popular but it’s one of the best shows you can watch, just ask anyone who watched past season 1!
@@LatetotheParty right? It’s soooo good! I saw it a few months ago! I’d listened to the soundtrack, but seeing it on stage blew me away! I may or may not be considering a House of Holbein related Halloween costume this year lol
For those wondering why Fozzie and Sam sound so weird in this movie, it's because Frank Oz was busy directing his own movie at the time, so Kevin Clash (a.k.a. the original Elmo) played his characters in this movie, and Oz ADR'ed his lines.
What tickles my brain is knowing that this wasn't Tim Curry's first turn as a pirate. I've seen a clip here on youtube of him performing with the Drury Lane Theater in the '80's as The Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance. No surprise, he was awesome. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/jWzqcele1tY/w-d-xo.html
@LatetotheParty it also has charlie Sheen playing a religious character. It's quite the movie and was also made by Disney in I think 1990. And I know you loved Muppet treasure island, I recommend the original treasure island from 1950 with Bobby Driscoll (who voiced Peter Pan in the original Peter pan) and Robert newton whose accent used in the movie helped cement how pirates talked. Sorry about the long comment XD
This is just me being a snot but here ya go: I’d feel safer running Toward the spark that was going along the gunpowder than from it. Running from means you are going to its destination. BOOM! To this day, Billy Connolly is immensely proud of being the only person ever to die in a Muppets movie.

clueless morgan and the rats make this movie. i saw it when it came out and recently showed it to my four year old... was fantastic
This was the movie that added Tim Curry to the top of my Favorite actors list. It's also my favorite version of "Treasure Island"
The old pbs show "wishbone" did a treasure island story. And one of the pirates died from the black spot. And it was also even more of a kids show than this. But it didn't even phase me and i was probably around 6-7.
Ever since I saw this in theaters back in 96, every time I meet someone named Bill or Billy, I automatically yell out "Billy Bonessss".
„Running with scissors“ is actually the title of a pretty great movie. I definitely recommend it a lot
The second best Muppet movie! So happy y’all are watching this
Can't believe we've waited this long to see this! The music is so good!
Tim Curry is so good
Such a gem!
4:03 Funny you mention that, as he basically impersonates John Cleese in _Garfield 2._
" big-fat-ugly-baby-face-eating-o'brian?"
STILL cracks me up!
🤣
very Pirates... nope Pirates is very Muppet's Treasure Island :D
I heard one of the cancelled Muppets films that would have come right after this one was an adaptation of Robin Hood.
I completely forgot Billy Connelly was in this!
Also Caine treated the Muppets as fellow cast-members. Curry treated himself as a fellow Muppet. The only man ever to out-Muppet the Muppets.
I remember this movie and it's on Disney plus. I love seeing Kermit the frog and I think these people should know that this is a great movie.
I've got cabin fever!
I'VE GOT IT TOO
Such a great movie! Hope you will consider doing Treasure Planet some day. Another great adaptation!
Bruh!!! I loved this Movie growing up!!! And I just found out Hans Zimmer did the score, AMAZING!!!
Btw do you guys have a favorite or several favorite film composers?
My top 5:
1. Lorne Balfe
2. Danny Elfman
3. Hans Zimmer
4. John Williams
5. Marco Beltrami
Siskel and Ebert hated this movie. Shows how much they knew.
the best bit is when you see Tim Curry smile in his real life self when Kermit appears then slips back into pirate.
why are they laughing at polly after black eyed pete does the "contender" line ?
2:25 I agree. I miss Steve Whitmire's Kermit.
I love it when you guys react to one of my favorite Muppet movies! 😂🤣😍🙂🥲🥹🤗🍿🥤
Billy died from a stroke. In the book the doctor flat out told him to stop drinking or it would happen to him.
You NEED to check out the show Black Sails! It wasn’t on a major channel so it not super popular but it’s one of the best shows you can watch, just ask anyone who watched past season 1!
Yeah great show.
Is she wearing a Six: the musical shirt?!? AMAZING!
Yes! We saw the musical last year and it was AMAZING!
@@LatetotheParty right? It’s soooo good! I saw it a few months ago! I’d listened to the soundtrack, but seeing it on stage blew me away! I may or may not be considering a House of Holbein related Halloween costume this year lol
I would give anything to watch Muppet Treasure Island for the first time again! 🏴☠️ 🏝️
39:42 In the end, the rats won this round. 💰
3:14 Love the Austin Powers references
every time tim curry sings "Professional pirate" i feel like giving up on everything and becoming a pirate...
If I lived in a world where Tim Curry was considered the world's greatest actor, that would be a good world.
I The Muppets! I Adore The Movie Labyrinth!🥰🤗😱🥹🎛🖥💗
For those wondering why Fozzie and Sam sound so weird in this movie, it's because Frank Oz was busy directing his own movie at the time, so Kevin Clash (a.k.a. the original Elmo) played his characters in this movie, and Oz ADR'ed his lines.
I like "Dead Tom's always been dead." Not "Dead Tom was already dead."
And noone ever question Old Tom and Real Old Tom dragging around Dead Tom
Some of these Muppets I know from shows I watched. Jim Henson's Hour to Muppets Tonight.
This was my favourite muppet movie
What tickles my brain is knowing that this wasn't Tim Curry's first turn as a pirate. I've seen a clip here on youtube of him performing with the Drury Lane Theater in the '80's as The Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance. No surprise, he was awesome. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/jWzqcele1tY/w-d-xo.html
Spiceworld is a perfect satire and it got terrible reviews because people took it seriously! Definitely worth a watch
This is the best muppet movie!!!
Also, please watch Muppets from Space, a lot of people dislike it, but I really enjoy it.
2:14
Muppets From space is up there with this one!! You gotta watch it!
You need to watch the three musketeers with tim curry. Hes absolutely fantastic in it and it has kiefer sutherland
Never seen it. We'll add it to the list.
And Charlie Sheen, Chris O'Donnell and Oliver Platt
Yess, the best Muppet movie
Speaking of muppets and starwars their was a muppet show episode that did just that
This is just me being a snot but here ya go:
I’d feel safer running Toward the spark that was going along the gunpowder than from it. Running from means you are going to its destination. BOOM!
Running towards it means you may get burned from the spark but you are getting away from the blast.
🤷♀️
Warned ya. lol
My favorite Muppet movie.
add a disney movie called "treasure planet" to your list of movies please
