      @@ct7567CaptRex There are 2 "g"s in Turkish. One is ,like you mentioned, hard g. The other one is "ğ". The letter "ğ" is the silent one. Well, in fact it makes difference in proper Turkish speaking but it's really neglectable, really tiny difference, hard to hear.
      It is "Yatağan" in Turkish, not "Yatagan". So, one can pronounce it as "Yataan". If it was "Yatagan" in Turkish, then one should've pronounce the hard "g".

    • @afinoxi
      @afinoxi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ct7567CaptRex depends on your accent. Normally it *is* voiced , but some people don't pronounce it. Azeris love to emphasize it in fact , my father is from Afyon and my mother is from Kastamonu and they both do pronounce them all he time , so do I. For me , I consider not pronouncing it to be disrespectful to our language and as a pro nationalist I _despise_ it.
      Turkish isn't like English where all the words have their own respective pronunciation regardless of the way it's written. The written language is how it's pronounced. It is based on the Istanbul accent , or rather the accent of the western half of the country. Eastern half of the country likes to butcher every pronunciation , so just ignore them.
      But for foreigners I recommend just skipping ğ sounds. It's hard to pronounce for non speakers of the language.

But it's nothing new. I always die inside a little bit whenever I hear the common german pleb pronounce english or french words. It's a crime against humanity.

    small brain: making wildly impractical fantasy weapons
    medium brain: using anachronistic and historically-appropriate weapons side by side in fantasy
    big brain: using obscure historical weapons in fantasy to get the aesthetics but sacrificing very minimal practicality
    galaxy brain: making hybrid fictional weapons that are both super practical and aesthetically pleasing

    I'm putting this in my book, Skall. Thank you for giving me visual reference for a sword I had been trying to imagine. One that was greatly versatile, with devastating cuts and thrusts.
    I'll make a slight mod to have the blunt spot on the spine be serrated so it can catch other blades.

    That's an awesome sword. I'd love to see more thrust testing. I've often wanted to put a sabre hilt on older swords, I feel like it would improve most older one handed swords

    There are many Yatagan copies: some khyber knives, bayonets, and even a few custom cutlasses. Thus, I'd not be too surprised if something similar existed. Yatagan are an excellent compromise design giving a very good chop, cut and still a decent thrust.
    Regarding your design, I'd want only two changes:
    1) a closed D-guard for better durability.
    2) a T-spine for further stiffness.

    Just make sure you make two of each one, lol. Or maybe three to give one away to Patreon supporters.

      It's done for a purpose. If the hook was wider, it wouldn't lock the hand as good, and if the guard was closer to the grip, you wouldn't be able to use gauntlets.

      2?? That’s generous! The blade simply exists to distract the opponent from the only deadly part of the weapon, the pommel. With no unscrewing pommel, a sword is literally useless.

    I like the blade design, since it's a ultimately a fantasy design I'd go with a more protective hilt - the British 1895 and 1897 pattern hilts are the first that come to mind, or a cutlass hilt if one prefers a simpler but equally effective design.

    Your sword is similar to a design I made up.
    I had mine with a hand and a half sword, katana, and scimitar blend.
    The overall length of the blade and handle go with the hand and a half sword.
    The tip of the blade is more of a scimitar, the curvature is a combination of scimitar and katana, and it has a bit of a recurve. (I dont think as pronounced as yours)
    The guard has an s curve to it, but like a katana it widens slightly around the flats of the blade.
    The grip is curved within the area your first hand would hold it, and then an extended pommel is added allowing a second hand to grab the grip. The grip is also aligned to the tip of the sword to allow thrusting to be easier.
    If you do another sword design contest I wanna submit it.

    The only thing i feel that this sword lacks to be a "jack of all trades", would be the ability to perform a murder stroke, because i can't see that sword holding up very well against plate armor. The concept of this sword is magnificent, you basically invented some sort of multirole combat aircraft but for a sword, but at the same time you can't have everything to work on a single object all together and be efficient at the same time, if you were to want that sword to be able to perform a murder stroke, probably it would lose other characteristic like hand protection or cutting performance. In any case, grear sword, great concept, interesting design and thumps up to the guy that made that sword, i don't see that being very easy to make. Peace.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      For murder strokes (and anti-armor use in general) it pretty much has to be a straight blade, or at least mostly straight.

    • @nanlenbr921
      @nanlenbr921 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Skallagrim Exaclty, you have pointed that in other videos, that is dangerous to do a murder stroke with a curved blade. The only way that i can imagine to make a murder stroke or other form of anti-armor capability work on this sword in particular would be make the front hand protection a wee bit more thick, join it to the pommel and add some sort of spike on the hand protection, so instead of striking with the guard, you punch with it, like some sort of trench knife. But at the same time, a thicker hand protection could mess with the balance and probably a punch won't be as powerful as the murder stroke, but i suppose that is the fun about discussing about sword designs.
