Allen, thank you for the beautiful tours of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello gardens and George Washington's Mt Vernon gardens! Some day I hope I can see both of these in person. I especially enjoyed the mini personal history lessons you gave along with the tours and our forefather's love of gardening and love of country. Thanks again for sharing the gardens with all of us!

I'm so glad you came out with this tour. You and Laura from "Garden Answer"'should tour each others garden. Also, her mother has a beautiful garden that you should tour.

Jefferson was so many things in life not only by the usage of his words but also his love for gardens, and engineering of his land.
Love the idea using meat as an accent to the meal.

Wow !!!! Outstanding!!! I’m embarrassed to say- I’ve never visited either garden - & I’m no spring chicken !!! That was delightful. Very different esthetics- but both equally beautiful & grand ! Have seen both gardens in books & magazines, but the video tour was a treat ! Thanks Allan !

Excellent episode! Inspiring and so informative. Was not aware of the marketing of plants at Monticello. Exciting for sure!

I found the Chinese Long Bean at a vegetable market when I lived in China for two years. Never knew these were called Asparagus Beans! Incredible that Jefferson grew them. Small world. They are delicious sauteed in olive oil with some bits of garlic. My housekeeper taught me how to prepare them.

So inspirational! Found Jefferson’s Farm Book online...absolutely fascinating. Need to plan some visits to Monticello and Mt Vernon. I’ll bet Jefferson considered his garden a ‘happy place’ as well!

I really enjoyed this video. It’s amazing how things were back in those days.
FYI..... I bought a couple of pincushion flowers today. After watching your video where you showed them, I knew I would love to have one. Was at Home Depot and there they were. They are so pretty. Thank you for introducing me to this flower. Happy Day!🌺

He grew? I wonder if he got his fingers dirty. Maybe so

I wanted to watch this and enjoy but I just can’t. Whatever else Jefferson was, he was a slave holder, and these gardens were kept by people who were “owned” by him. You just can’t romanticize that away!!

Did Jefferson actually ever plant anything or did the slaves do it all? Not trying to be facetious but I often wonder about large landowners claiming credit for their gardens or greenhouses when others did/do all the work. Obtaining the seeds is one thing...putting them in the soil and getting your nails dirty is something else. I would like to think Jefferson really did do some of his gardening.
