Bill Kenny (1914-1978), the lead tenor, had one of the finest voices in the business in the 20th century. Elvis said he could never hope to be as good as Kenny.

@@JohnSmith-it6hj You're right. I got the two groups and lead singers confused. Tony Williams (1928-1992) was the high tenor voice of the Platters from 1953 to 1960.

Who’s Bill Kenny? He was never a member of the Platters. You must be thinking about Tony Williams.

Finally somebody reacted to the platters. They where big in the fifties there are many songs they did that where covered. For instance Bobby Hatfield of the righteous brothers did unclaimed melody. I liked his version better but the platters are my all-time favorite group who did many great songs. Tony Williams never sang a bad song.

The music back then was so simple and let the voice that accompanied it to really show through - without auto tune and all other fanciness. Nowadays - just ask these artists to sing without any of the help they get from the electronic world. Who would sound like that out in the middle of a field singing? Most no one would.

platters had other members in 1952-1954 and in 54 the group that became so polished in 1955 on mercury was the same formed members 1954 with zola taylor on the federal label and their version on federal was more raw for only you but it is good you could say they had a more vocal group harmony like other groups such as the medallions, penguins, calvanes.... note i use west coast groups since the platters are a west coast group who broke the charts of r and b and pop unlike most r and b groups could not do that with pop charts.
