Helen Slater (Supergirl, The Legend of Billie Jean) joins us this week to talk about her experience being thrust into the iconic role of Supergirl at 18 years old and the many different pressures and difficulties that came along with it. Helen was so open this week - she gets candid about her desire to act and the deep fulfillment that she receives in studying mythology. We also talk about her deep bond with Helen Hunt, the hurdle she had to cross to get her parents’ acceptance for acting, and memories of iconic scenes while appearing in Smallville.

I've done background acting and seen actors flub their lines repeatedly. It's similar to watching ice skaters fall repeatedly. "We all know you're better than that." It's a downer for everyone in the room, and you can't help them. You don't know the lines... unless it's been too many takes and you actually learned the lines.

I remember my brother taped Supergirl the movie and having watched it about 10 times over as a kid on VHS, I remember it was a fun watch but the plot being wacky.

I used to have such a huge crush on Helen Slater! And even now in this interview, she still looks amazingly beautiful. As a kid, I thought one day I would marry her (Hey, I was a kid, give me a break!) , but alas, not all childhood dreams come true sadly.

Two sides of the coin. A number of years ago I was hired to work on a SAG industrial in Philadelphia.
They were still writing the script the night before. I received my copy late that night and was told there would be more changes in the morning when I arrived to set. At this point, you don’t know what to do because if you commit these to quick memory, it will be harder to make the changes. But I went ahead and made a study tape, which I listened to on the drive to Philadelphia.
When I arrived, sure enough there was a new script waiting. The director/producer told me this was the first time they engaged a SAG contract to work with a SAG actor. I was thankful but curious as to why this time. He said because they knew the script would be last minute and they wanted someone who was a quick study.
WHAT? I don’t remember that being part of the SAG membership criteria. Nevertheless, I had at it and came through for them and possibly future SAG actors. It was a struggle, but hopefully all of the paddling was underwater.

There's a saying in Hollywood, "Don't s#@! where you eat!" She's not going to name names. One it's not in her nature, and two, if she wants to keep working, keep quiet.

You hear "difficult" and you expect someone wouldn't come out of their trailer until they were given a pound of peeled cotton candy grapes, or something like that.
