The Lucas family is quite brazen so it doesnt take much digging to notice theres alot wrong with statements that include them.
Well tbf he did start out by saying there wasnt anything explicitely supernatural about the statement,, he was more frustrated by being blocked from investigating the Lukas's

Funny bit about how the case numbers are created, especially about "what do we do if we get two entries on the same day?" Reminds me of problems one can have when naming files.

The way he talked about how stressed he was getting and how vulnerable he seemed when I was so used to the pissy guy who gave little to no care about the statements really got to me. Ive also noticed that he seemed to be in a rush (?), it just seemed that when he said the name and blah blah blah part it seemed faster than usual. And also mind blown about the case number thingies

I've recently been taking notes while listening to these episodes and the moment Tim started listing the errors I audibly groaned in resignation and leafed back to make the changes. It seems I'm starting to relate to Jon's poorly hidden resentment more and more with every episode.
On the contrary I loved it. I also make notes and I noticed these things and was confused. I put (8) next to 2009 because the missing date seemed odd. I put that the case number given in ep 9 was the same numbers as in the Piper but in a different order and did that mean anything. I was confused that the priests statement was a different case number then listed in Burned out. This clears a lot up

@@cassiemoyles4177 Both are romance languages (along with French and Italian) so all 4 have similarities. Either way, in a spoken form, it would be hard to get around if people are not used to hearing the language, and she would probably also have a terrible, terrible accent.

I love these kind of episodes. Even though the Lucas family gets "explained", these older episodes are still pretty fucking scary, maybe even more so now that I know more about the person(s) involved. Imagine waking up alone on a ship and spending 6 months wondering what happened. Chilling.

I think Jon deserves a break. He sounds so tired. He even says it himself, 'I haven't slept much in these past few months' Also, he's very irritable in the beginning of the episode when Tim walks in and critiques him. That, in my personal experience, happens when someone is extremely burnt out. The poor guy should take a break for his mental health.:((

Well... it's been 2 years..... You know how well this has aged.
"Students" point out inconsistencies I wouldn't have noticed in a million years, me being the kind of listener who won't even notice all the names from previous episodes coming up again.
Seriously, I'm just along for the ride. Not even trying to follor the overarching plot. At least not this first time around. Maybe in a few years, when I relisten to the whole thing, I'll see the bigger picture.

I don't have the best memory for names/places/dates, but I am already catching so much more that I did the first time. It's definitely worth it to come back after the finale, as you'll see the picture much more clearly

Mysterious fog, strange whistle, overpaid job, weird ship. Strange enough for the Magnus institute I think.
Everybody left the ship, a weird whistle summoned mysterious fog, 'it wasn't an easy choice', fake shipping containers, a body washing up a year later seeming as though it had only been at sea for 5 days? Sound pretty much like a sacrifice of some sort, and definitely at least a little paranormal.
But how was he missing for 6 months and only in the water 5 days? They took the only lifeboat and he disappeared on the ship in the middle of the ocean

It's my first go but as I see it he is scared of them threatening the finances of the institute,you don't bite the hands that feed you without getting punched.
So this is my first time listening to this podcast and I think that
One… There’s something strange about the Lucas family. They seem shady.
Two I think that the reason the job was so over paid was because the crew or captain had to choose which crew member to kill at the end.
Three I think Sean was on board last time that’s why he was so scared. He knew what could potentially happen if the crew and or captain chose him to kill instead of the other person.
4 the end, after all the money comes in, the woman is nearly tempted to go back. If she had, I’d wager that she would end up just like Sean.
Also, why is the Lucas family funding the magnus Instituted?
It seems like they are trying to hide something and using money as a means to prevent further investigations. John definitely needs to look into that.

Just found this amazing series and it's my first time going through it, but I had a thought about the recordings. Jon Sims states repeatedly that he has to use the tape recorder to document stubborn cases that refuse to be made digital, but despite all the weirdness he keeps an extreme skepticism about every case. What if he digitally copies all the fake cases but only the truely supernatural ones have to be voice recorded. So we hear only the true cases while Jon sees and types thousands of fake cases all the time?
this is 6 months later so I assume you know but extremely minor spoilers ig??
yeah!!! i believe Jonny confirmed this in one of the Q&As where he said that yes, all the statements on podcast are true occurances (though that doesn't mean the statement givers always have to be entirely truthful Abt it, like in the lost John's cave episode)

everyone is talking about how humorous the interaction between tim and jon is, but like... the end of it really shows how much this whole hive thing is affecting him. he really sounds broken. and the hive hasn't even tried to hurt them yet. I think by the end of this Jon, Martin, and anyone else who gets involved will be mentally injured in ways that may not heal for years, or forever

I sat in the boat while my dad and his friend’s scuba dived once. All alone in the boat, nothing on the horizon but water meeting sky. It was cold, but not too choppy, there was no cry of birds, just the slap of the waves against the side of the boat. Out in the distance I noticed something strange. I narrowed my eyes and saw a fin. A very distinctive fin. It belonged to a killer whale, lazily moving away from us towards the horizon. I froze, the awareness of how small and frail the boat was, how thin the protection it offered held me in place. I thought of the others - defenceless under the waves. Time felt like it stopped, holding its breath to see if the deadly creature would change its course. Then up they bubbled - the divers - and they laughed and scrambled aboard. I said nothing, afraid they would not believe me. But I threw up in some ones discarded shoe on the way back in.

I'm so addicted and Jonathan's voice despite delivering the scariest and most interesting stories is still so relaxing. And such a retake character sometimes. This series is such a gem and I'm glad I found it haha

1st relisten after the finale here. Doesnt jon say later (season 3 or 4)that he doesnt like rereading statements because they taste stale or something like that? Because the beholding already knows that story. I vaguely remember that, and his reluctance to rerecord the mistake ones in the beginning of this episode could be the first signs of his eye powers/weird "eating" habits forming

Carlita says she had a problem communicating as she didn't speak Spanish, but Brazil speaks Portuguese. Just a minor nitpick, as it's not necessarily an error in the story but one made by the character.

I find it interesting that the first two Episodes specifically featureing The Lonely also involve patrons, or "partners", of the Institute. The Civilians are Alone, while the Institute never is.

Using Spanish in Brazil?
Yeah, kinda like a lingua franca - she can't speak Portuguese, the folk she's talking to can't speak English, but Spanish is a middle enough ground for her to get by in.
Rusty Quill To be fair, Portuguese speakers can understand some Spanish but not the other way around.

Not to be a student but that sailor probably had trouble because they were speaking spanish in Brazil where they speak Portuguese.

I started listening to this series a few days ago because I remembered that apparently it was good, and i'm very much enjoying it! Though, every time Jon says "statement" my mind jumps to Fesh Pince 2 where Uncle Phil's opening statement is "statement"
Unfortunate for me that the one episode that, ironically, really got under my skin, "Squirm", turned out to be the main throughline of this season so far, but my curiosity thankfully outweighs it
