Guernsey dude here. The blue boxes are blue to match Guernsey post ( our mail service ). There used to be A UK post service called general post, which Guernsey split from decades ago.
That is a remarkably beautiful post box. This channel is fascinating! Thank you for sharing your love of history with the world. Guernsey seems such an interesting place.
We have to go to a public mailbox across a busy street to get our mail--tho rich people get it delivered to their own mailboxes in front of their homes. The ice can be thick on the road, the street snow removal people often pile the snow on the curb and sidewalk, making it impossible to access, and a few years ago a drunk driver hit the mailboxes, destroying them right b4 Christmas. (Proving how dangerous that street is.) It took them until April to put in a new set of mailboxes. The worst of it is, this mail person keeps returning all my mail at Christmas. 4 years in a row, now. They used to either leave it on my porch or leave me a note to pick it up at the P.O. Now I get a vacancy notice--lived here 26 years this spring. If I complain, they defend this person. I've had a heart attack and broke every bone in my foot in the last 5 yrs and they could not care less--they just return my mail. You can guess the expletives I am leaving out. My last mail person was a saint--wish I could thank them for being so wonderful. Live and learn.
@@cyninbend It is pretty common in Norway too, to have all mailboxes together in one big stand, typical for "housing estates" etc. For the more widespread rural areas, we have them 'at home' or close to a main road.
@SweetIvoryLilly Channel Islands are not part of the UK. They have their own internal givernments. The islands are only a attached to the Crown as part of the old dukedom of Normandy, of which Charles III is Duke. The red post box shown here is a one off. Post boxes in Canada are red as the British Sovereign is also King of Canada. Unless of course Canada joins the USA, then you could have yellow ones.
This one was restored to its original colour given its historical significance. Guernsey Post chose blue as its corporate colour in 1980 and, therefore, the postboxes were painted to reflect this.
One thing about it which I find odd: if it was installed during the reign of Victoria, how come it has the Royal Coat of Arms with the Hanoverian arms inescutcheon within it?
Looks more like my Little Pony. Is it not more likely it's a unicorn that's had a run in with the H&S? The lion's not exactly rampant either. The crown is also lacking a cross, which hints at over zealous rubbing back
Here’s a little respect for you (although if you interested in that fact you could have done this yourself): “In 1980, the Island's then red post boxes were painted a distinctive Oxford blue to complement Guernsey Post Office's new branding and image. The exception is Pillar Box number 1 in Union Street, which has retained its original burgundy colour and is the oldest working post box in the British Isles.” - taken from a 5 second google search.
There are some Victorian and Edwardian post boxes still in use over here in County Clare....painted green.
I'm surprised they weren't removed after 1925?
Do they still have VR and ER on them?

Love these historical nuggets from this lovely young woman.

Beautiful. The pillar box too

Always happy to learn more about Guernsey, I really want to go there one day😊
Love your posts, Alice!😊
Alice is interesting, intelligent & gorgeous ❤
The first pillar box was installed in St Helier in Jersey in the channel Islands.
England got working mailboxes from the 18hundreds, meanwhile in Norway, the Postal Service wanted to stop delivering mail to Home mailboxes this year.

Not just England. Wales too!
A ray of sunshine from summer!
Just Lovely.
You’re very pretty ❤️
I love your videos and you inspire me so so much!!
Excellent!!
Check out the Irish postboxes. Absolutely excellent. And green!
Why the blue boxes, is this the same throughout the Channel Islands?
My question exactly.
Same. Why blue when they obviously used red? In Canada, post boxes are red

@@ds1868 Is there a reason blue was chosen? Why is this one the one off?
@@SweetIvoryLillyProbably just a whim to have red one.
The re-painting of the heraldry is questionable.
😄
I’m surprised it isn’t better protected from damage…it’s a monument of sorts☺️
No worries, it’s Victorian, it’s built to last.
As someone from guernsey I have never noticed that post box
Used to be one in Dorchester in Dorset, not sure if its still there
Looks like a side street on the doc martn et😊
We still use these here in Sri Lanka 😊
What's with the colour dif?🤔
Why red and the others are blue?

Iconic
Lovely dress with high side split 😅🎉
Czech property now?
Those that live there and mail letters from there, may have wonder why they never got mail. Since it was the only mailbox around at the time.
Did they run out of red ?
WHY is it red??? Come on, respect your audience.
