When I joined the Marines in 1971 an old Man that I had delivered papers to as a boy took his flag down from his pole and expertly folded it and gave it to me. He said you can give it back when you get home. I carried it everywhere when I could and put it in a safe hands when I could not. I returned to my home town with the flag still folded. I went to give it back to the dear old Man and he had passed away. I am 70 now and I still have it. My flag and all others are precious to me.

At the time I was as liberal as they come, and like I said, a Canadian - that doesn't change what a beautiful song this is. Since then I've changed my views a lot. There's nothing like out of control liberals to make a man conservative. Check out Johnny's cover of Sting's I Hung My Head. Not related to this song in anyway, but a great story told in the way only Johnny could tell it.
Your introduction to this video, before you played the, “RAGGED OLD FLAG” video clip, and your sage discussion afterward, was the most important and significant reaction I have ever seen! You are TRULY, wise, beyond your years! You renew my hopes and dreams for the future generations. I'm feeling my own mortality at age 73, and I was beginning to fear that my hopes for the future, would die with me. --->Some people could live for a million years, and never understand what you just explained in LESS than 15 minutes. Actually, you nailed it in the first 8 minutes, before you played the Johnny Cash video clip! But, your post-video discussion, really BROKE IT DOWN, for anyone who didn't understand. It was EPIC! ---> If only the World could see through your eyes, well, let's just say, we would FIND THE WAY to trust and love people, instead of turning, FIRST, to THE WAYS OF WAR. ---> We have a lot of work ahead of us, but, If you have any doubts, please know that, the World is a better place, because of YOU.
Army Disabled Veteran 78-92 thanks for playing this song. I wished we could hear this more often on the radio. Hopefully the people would stop and listen to the words.
Best reaction I've seen yet. So nice to see such strong Patriotism. You don't see that much anymore. We are a proud Country of people from different races and cultures who's descendants made and continue to make the ultimate sacrifice for our rights and freedoms. This Country has earned the respect and envy of the World. I thank all the Veterans present and past for your service to this Country. May you be blessed, watched over, and guided by God. Lest we forget!
This is America...everything we are and will be forever. We are one under this flag and we should never forget it. Our flag is symbolic to who we are, what we represent, and our one unified identity. We are America. We should never forget it. We should work together to preserve it - for ourselves and one another. Much love. ❤
You got it right on what Johnnie Cash was saying. It is not about a particular flag in a small town but about the USA and what the Stars and Strips stand for throughout our history. So you got it right.
No, you're correct. The ragged flag of the title is a metaphor for America and the ideals it was founded on. It's gone through a lot, it's taken a lot of beatings, it's "sometimes hung a little low", but it's kept flying through it all.
WOW!!! 🤯 Thank you for picking this one! I’ve loved Johnny Cash for 25+ years, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard this! This choked me up & brought tears to my eyes! 😢 Thank you again!! BTW… you & your wife are in our prayers and I hope she’s feeling great & doing good!! ❤🙏🏼 God bless & much love to the both of ya!!
My father was 20 years Army WW 1, my husband was 20 years Army Vietnam 2 tours, my son was 20 years Army Iraq and Iran, my grandson is so far 11 years Army Afghanistan, my granddaughter, my grandson’s twin sister, 9 years Air Force served in Afghanistan the same time her twin brother was there. I am very patriotic. I love my county and our military.
My husband was any army 🪖 then he transfer to the Air Force . Are granddaughter was going to a private school 🏫 he wanted the best for her. They were standing up doing a pledge of allegiance a girl in her class was making fun of it. Our granddaughter turned around look at the girl and punched the right in the mouth 👄. She told that girl don't ever make fun of our American flag 🇺🇲. She told that girl that her papa what's dying for serving our country he was supposed to agent Orange. Our daughter and I had to go to school about this. Are granddaughter did not get in trouble . 2 months later my husband had passed away. He's buried in the military cemetery 🪦 in Keokuk Iowa.
Son... You do love this country. You're right to be concerned. As long as there are folks like you, and me, and many of us... we'll be just fine. From a USAF vet, like your dad... It'll be alright. Fight the good fight.
Great choice BP. I have loved this presentation by Johnny for so many years. He speaks the truth how so many of us older folks feel towards our FLAG and out country. And BP please keep TALKING F those peeps that say you talk to much speak your mind please, it is what our founding fathers put on that piece of paper that represents the rights we all are entitled to.
My granddaughter cares the flag at the start of our rodeos, they play this song as she is flying around with our flag and I shed tears every time! Thank you for telling it like it is ❤❤❤
Thank you! Every time I listen to one of your reviews, I like you more and more. Each one tells me a little about yourself and those bits are adding up to an amazing person.
Johnny Cash cared a lot about your average everyday American. He's got a way of reaching right to your heart and soul. With age comes wisdom, and a longer view of history.
I HEARD THIS WHEN I WAS YOUNG STILL SHAKES MY SOUL. WE NEED TO KEEP OUR NOSE OUT OF OTHERS PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD. WE NEED TO LOOK AT OUR HOUSE AND OUR PEOPLE BEFORE WE TRY HELPING OTHER FOREGIN COUNTRIES.
Even a brand new flag, carries the scars of all US Flags. I am a patriot. An American. I love my Nation and my People. Not discarding the rest of the world, but they have their own Nation and Flag....
You are absolutely right about this song, he’s giving the history of what this flag is and what it’s been through. As you grow older most of us see things for what they really are.
A single flag that had been through all of U.S. history wouldn't have so many stars. Yes, that old man is telling part of the history of our country. As a country, we have probably been through as much as that Ragged Old Flag. But today, we must stand tall, speak truth to power and not fall into a state of intellectual laziness, allowing conspiracy theories and other flawed logic to dictate how we think. I don't usually get political in reaction video comments, but you are right about our nation being in a worrisome place. Again, we see the mastery of storytelling from the Man in Black. Thanks for this.
This "song", really just spoken word poetry, does hit most of us hard I think. Not because we are Patriots, but because we do love the people around us, who are Americans, new or old. We see our parents or grandparents who have served, or who have come here because other places are worse, and we do love our people, even if we don't love the things which have been done, or which are still being done in our names. The people are America, not the politicians, so it is hard not to feel this about your home.
Johnny was a left-leaning patriot. He knew the system and the country wasn't perfect - moreover, he knew it would never be. But, he loved that this country seeks to be perfect. That we try. That we'll fight for, and die for, our freedom, and other folks' freedom. That we have the courage to fix our own problems and put in the work. Johnny loved THAT America.
You should listen to Cash's "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" to really dive deep into the promise of America and how we continue to strive to fulfill that promise. I'm an Annapolis grad and Navy veteran, who attended segregated schools in South Carolina until my 9th grade year.
I'm hoping you get around to Johnny's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" it's message is fire. If you're interested in Johnny's collaborations check out "The Highwayman" done with Willy Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings, four of country music's legends. They formed the band The Highwaymen. Thank you for reviving some of the most historic American music ever made.
This made me cry, I love our country and all the history we have gone through since the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock! WE THE PEOPLE Still love what our Flag stands for........Freedom and ideals, God and Country! "This Land Was Made for YOU and ME" 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
As long as there is one person left willing to die for us, to defend us, there is hope. Johnny always spoke from his heart. He was the best example of humanitarian, with Jimmy Carter.
I am so glad you did this. I was actually just about to tell you I think you'd like this one but you found it on your own! I think it's a beautiful piece of poetry and Its cool to see how you connected with it. Keep it up man!
I live in China for 8 years. One thing I see is that the chinese people are very patriotic. And they learn about their country from early age on, but what do we do? Today kids are thought to hate America and I don't know why. I think our kids should learn more about our history.
He was telling us about America 🇺🇸, not that piece of cloth, in itself. He is talking about the People, the great country. Yes, we want the best for our children and grandchildren. God bless America. God bless Johnny Cash, and his memory.❤
Desert storm vet. I love this country. You said it. It's not about me. It's what am I leaving behind for my kids and grandkids. I took a oath. An it never had a expiration date on it. I'll do whatever it takes to give my kids and grandkids a chance in the American experiment. Hope they appreciate and uphold the American ideals. If we are to go into strife. Let it come in my time. So mine will only know peace and prosperity
Thank you! I haven't heard this song in years. I was reduced to tears as a child and was again. Why isn't it played daily!! My Father served his country too! Proudly and Patriotically.
1 of his most poinant stories ever, if not the most! Definitely 1 Great American Patriot! He is by at the top 5 or less of patriotic song writers/story tellers! This gives me goose bumps every single time & gets tears nearly every time. No way to describe this song. I am very concerned as well, but I think we will pull through. More Patriots need to stand up, speak out
In perspective, the 13 stripes honor the founding states. The stars are added as states join the union, so the arrangement of the stars changes. Two states have joined since I was born!
Though I've never served, I have the utmost respect for our men/women in uniform and such a deep-seeded love for this country. This gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and will forever be my favorite musical/spoken word piece. I even went so far as to get "I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag" tattooed on my inner left bicep. God bless!

We are all under this flag in this country. No matter color we are be proud of what we stand for and let us all live under our great flag.
This one really makes you want to cry. 🇺🇸
We do not stand for our National Anthem, WE stand for our flag.
Heard this 100 times, and never without goosebumps and most of the time, tears
Much love. ❤
This is making me bawl my eyes out and I’m not even American! ABSOLUTELY beautiful! Thank you!
You got it right on what Johnnie Cash was saying. It is not about a particular flag in a small town but about the USA and what the Stars and Strips stand for throughout our history. So you got it right.
It's okay to get emotional...💛
Wow, everytime I listen to this. It hits me in my feels.
Thank all of you and your family for your service!!!!❤❤❤❤
Thank you to your family. God bless you all.
WE THE PEOPLE
My granddaughter cares the flag at the start of our rodeos, they play this song as she is flying around with our flag and I shed tears every time! Thank you for telling it like it is ❤❤❤
PB you got it right. It is the story of this country through the Flag.
As soon as the snare drum sounds - every time - the tears begin to fall.
TO MANY STARS ON THE FLAG TO BE THAT PARTICULAR ONE .
You are absolutely right about this song, he’s giving the history of what this flag is and what it’s been through.
As you grow older most of us see things for what they really are.
Be proud to be an American. No matter what your country has been through. Be proud of your country.
WOW is right. I've never heard this before. It is monumental and inspirational. Thank you for sharing this.
This song is a beautiful history lesson. Makes me cry with pride every time I hear it.
Thank you for reviving some of the most historic American music ever made.
he all ready reacted too that one
true that was a FIRE reaction...but I would like to see him react to "The Highwayman" as well as she mentioned@@williamparrish9954
You nailed it, man. The flag in the song is a metaphor of America and her people.
This made me cry, I love our country and all the history we have gone through since the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock!
WE THE PEOPLE Still love what our Flag stands for........Freedom and ideals, God and Country!
"This Land Was Made for YOU and ME"
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
As long as there is one person left willing to die for us, to defend us, there is hope. Johnny always spoke from his heart. He was the best example of humanitarian, with Jimmy Carter.
“She’s in good shape for the shape she’s in”
That line always chokes me up. I haven’t figured out exactly why yet.
It is exactly about the history of our country.
I am so glad you did this. I was actually just about to tell you I think you'd like this one but you found it on your own! I think it's a beautiful piece of poetry and Its cool to see how you connected with it. Keep it up man!
There is greatness in you, my brother. You have only begun to see what our Lord has called you to. Stay the course. You have a powerful destiny.
Johnny Cash was a story teller and used music to express the history of our country in so many of ways.
God bless!
Loved seeing the genuine tears. I feel the same way.
You must listen to "Greystone Chapel" on Live at Folsom Prison..... the man who wrote it is sitting in the audience as an inmate......🤯
Beautiful the flag will fly forevermore
God bless America...Thanks for playing this song and opened up with your emotions and story...beautiful...
