Solarez UV Curing Resin Review - Thin Hard, Thick Hard, Bone Dry, Flex

  • UV Curing resins are the way of the future for fly tying epoxy. They are much quicker and easier to use. No more mixing, no more trying to hurry before curing, and no more of those terrible drying wheels. These curing resins make epoxying so much easier. Just zap with a UV light, and its done.
    Solarez was actually the inventor of UV resin. They originally made it for surf boards, and have moved into products designed for fly tying, among many other applications. They currently have 4 formulas specialized for fly tying. The Thin Hard formula is great for penetrating thread wraps and fibers. Also great for applying eyes and thin coats over bodies. The Thick Hard formula is great for building bug bodies and when you need a thicker and slower formula. The Flex formula is really great for repairing waders, and building bodies that need to "flex" or bend without the formula cracking. I also use this for some knots to keep their strength and to smooth them out. The most recent formula they came out with is bone dry. This cures super hard, and very quickly. It also comes with a brush applicator and is great for use as head cement.

      Depends on the size. I just tied some up and use the bone dry. But the thin hard would work on sizes 14 and larger. Might get away with it on 16’s

    Thank you. How long do you expose the Thin Hard to the UV flash light and from what distance do you hold the light from the surface? Thank you.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually hold it as close as possible, and it depends on if you have a quality light or not. I had one light that I would have to hold for 30-120 seconds. I started using the one sold by Solarez, and it can be as quick as 5 seconds with the thinner formula's, but the thicker formulas can take up to 10 or 20 seconds.

    Quick question. Do you need a UV light for the bone dry? Or can I just let it dry?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All UV curing resin needs UV light rays to cure. Luckily the sun gives off a fair amount of UV rays. So, you could cure in the sunlight. None of these (or any other UV resin will “dry”. So air exposure doesn’t cure it. You gotta put it in the path of UV rays via a flashlight or sunlight. I find the flashlight will allow you to cure it much quicker and easier than the sun, gets it to cure in the shape you want. You know? If you wait to set it in the sun, it will drip or gather more on one side than the other

I have tried a few other things big name crafters have used but I find I dont know how anything would last. After its cured I test it buy pokeing it with my nail and im sorly dissapointed. Every time I pulll back there a bigg butt dent/scratch in the resin. Then I think well then what the point in using it. blehh.

      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't dent with your nail unless your superman.. I don't find scratches or problems on the flies after use. But keep in mind this stuff is made for fly tying. I know they have some other resins as well on their website. They created UV resin (first company to come out with it) for surf boards, as a quicker alternative to the mixing type epoxy. So they might have stuff that is stronger, better suited for your needs. If you contact them, they are always pretty helpful with any questions I have had.

    Solarez really is good stuff. Just as a heads-up to anyone interested, Ultra Fire sells what looks like your exact light (telescoping, 18650 battery, 5 second cure) for around $15.00 on Amazon. I had to wait a month for it to ship from China, but it was well worth it. I think it's the 502 B. Buy a couple of batteries and a charger on Ebay for $10.00 and you are set. Well, almost. You will need the applicators to make actually applying the resin practical. That will set you back 5 or 6 bucks. C'mon Solarez, include the applicators with your fine product. Raise the price a few bucks if you have to, but save people the hassle of googling up where to buy the damn things!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy the applicators on their site. And all their new (smaller sized) bottles come with awesome applicators. The larger bottles are more for replenishing the smaller bottles.
      Yes there are some good deals from China. Just beware, those might not last as long. My light is going on 3 years, of lots of use, and still working great! But for sure, Chinese lights are cheaper, and can work for a short time to save some money.

    Solarez torches are made in China as well as their batteries. Henry Yan (ebay seller joyguy.store) supplies torches to Wahoo International (Solarez). He told me exactly which torch he supplies to Wahoo. He recommended the Mastiff E5 3Watt 385nm, which is the Solarez High Output Resinator. Compared this light it to my buddies Solarez Resinator and it is identical. Solarez Resinator costs $80 in Canada without taxes, and Henry's cost me $37 shipped to my door. Only took two weeks to receive it from China. Just thought I would pass this on in case someone wants to skip the middle man mark-up.

Either way, it was invented in the 60’s apparently, so your right, solarez didn’t invent it. But I believe they did have someone that worked with them or something who also fished and maybe it was they were the first to use it in fly tying? Or maybe just first to use it in a large scale in industrial form. I’m not sure, I know though they are apparently pioneers in the world of resins. Lol
