So like Dick Grayson. Good. There is 1 giant problem. The Robin in Teen Titans is not Dick Grayson. Also not Richard Grayson who is Dick Grayson's birth father. Also really fun fact is this Robin is in fact Damian Wayne. Not Dick Grayson. For several reasons including Dick never wanted to be the best. Dick never considered Batman his father. Dick would never join the side of evil to bring down the evil. Dick had 0 connection to Slade. Dick had 0 thots about ever calling Batman his father because he already had a father who had died and Dick Grayson was 14 years old when his parents were murdered. Also Dick Grayson called himself Knight Wing when he grew up. Damian called himself Knight Hawk. In Teen Titans it was Knight Hawk not wing and Damian 100% completely fits every clue to being behind the mask while Dick Grayson fits 0%. Also really stupid fact is this robin does not have tights but an actual heavy duty battle armor and uses battle war weapons while Dick Grayson had tights and no weapons at all. Also the most common evidence people claim its Dick Grayson is they use clips from the Batman Animated series and not actually from this show. So the only evidence proving its Dick Grayson is complete lies. Its solidly Damian Wayne because well Damian fits everything about the character especially being the single only robin to ever have any connection to Slade ever. You literally have 1 option and that is Damian yet people who never actually were real fans but fake fans think its Dick Grayson. Hell you call yourself a real fan yet you failed to realize Dick's actual name is Dick and his father is Richard making you extremely lack luster at best of a fan. The final fact is Jason Todd is Red X because Jason is the only Robin who had the balls to steal the wheels off the Batmobile. Another really stupid fact people always fail at is Teen Titans got rejected to be in the Justice League cross over because it would conflict with Batman's Robin being Dick Grayson inside the Justice League while Teen Titans had a different person being the Robin. That was common knowledge back in the day. So you claim to have done your research yet you failed at those simple things.
As with all sets of 3 there is always 4 except when their is 5 like the 5 of the 3 Musketeers or the 5 of the 3 Stooges or the 5 boots of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
A good quote I heard recently went “You can’t do all the good in the world. But the world needs all the good you can do.” A nihilistic perspective like why should I do good if others don’t is the exact reason that Evil is as pervasive as it. The only way evil can win is if good men do nothing. That is a truth in this life.

I think the True Master's point was that Robin takes _everything_ seriously, and sometimes there are simpler answers. If you focus too much on one pattern of meaning, you might miss the obvious. She also I think said that just to give Robin an extra push, and slowing him down means he's more on edge from both sides of it, so he's thinking more about how to keep other things in mind _while_ on a time limit, instead of just racing ahead or taking his time, he learns to do a little of both.

Aang wanted to talk down the Firelord or just not fight him, or in some other way avoid direct lethal confrontation with him, and his various past lives were likely telling him in each of their ways to just kill him, but they each told him to act "decisive" "with justice" "shape his own destiny" and "look beyond his needs and do what is best for the world" as their way of saying it. The thing is, Aang successfully making a compromise of learning and using Energybending _did_ do all those things, just not the way the Avatars were thinking, or how Aang thought things had to go. That, and I've seen others point out that it actually works _better_ for the world for Ozai to be taken down non-lethally, as it further undermines his violent regime.

I always saw her inconsistent responses like "you never asked" as her just trying to throw him off balance for exactly the purpose you're describing. He's not the sort where you try to change him by reasoning against his normal way of doing things. He needs to learn by doing. Staying down until he can learn to right himself properly.

I’d say all of the DCAU had a massive impact on me growing up.... I didn’t even realize they were connected until years later!!!!
And even with that being said.... I ALSO BARELY UNDERSTOOD SHOWING TIMES so I’d only catch episodes here and there.... if I had regular and easy access to the dcau I would be a VERY different person right now AND would be even more obsessed with the show than I already am now!!!!
Honestly, the fact Robin spare costumes and masks that perfectly fit the other titans is kind of endearing. It's almost like he knew it would happen eventually.

I was half expecting Shady to include the scene from Teen Titans GO where Robin shows his face without the mask. He does meme through the whole episode about it, but in the end, you see him with one normal eye (well in the style of the cartoon) and one with a tiny Robin sticking out, which freaked everyone out. TTG may get a lot of sh8t for being too comedic, but I do like how they were able to make fun of some of the tropes the serious TT couldn't like that. (and it made up for all the sh8t Beast Boy had to put up with being the one with the sense of humor where everyone else was so deadpan serious, TTG allowed BB to shine and really be himself without getting scowled at, which was therapeutic cause I love Beast Boy! Though Cyborg was always cool with him in fairness. The only one who really laughed at his jokes.)
My theory on how Robin defeated the snake, is that he didn’t necessarily hear it, but probably focused on vibrations on the ground.
Sort of like toph from avatar the last Airbender on how she "sees" with her feet?

Fun facts about the intro songs. The Japanese version goes on about the teen part of their lives, and is used for wacky episodes. The English version is about the Titan part of their lives, and is used for serious episodes.
Also that snake terrified me as a kid.

The guardian of the cave thing is actually my favorite part. When Robin points out that the snake's blind, it reflects the overall point of the episode - namely, that what makes him worthy is his respect for and consideration of other people. He won't fight the snake with an obvious advantage in his own favor, so he allows the guardian to do something that, while arguably unbalanced in *his* favor, at least nominally levels the playing field.
Maybe because he will be haunted by a feeling of guilt and shame so while seemingly putting him as a disadvantage. blinding himself actually allows him to use his full strength.
Like if a villain takes a civilian hostage but that actually allows the hero to focus 100% of their mind on the present moment.
Yeah, fighting someone blind would seriously not sit well with Robin unless there was some way to even the field.
To play a little devils advocate, snakes are pretty good at feeling vibrations and many can sense heat. Not to mention all snakes smell in two directions at once and are the best at doing so
he is also forgetting that snakes even when blind have the other senses that allow them to pinpoint with much greater accuracy a target than a man for example would without his eyesight... From far better smell to ability to sense vibrations of a much broader range than people can... Sure, we can hear and feel some strong vibrations, but a snake has hearing of a sort, but they also feel the vibrations much more acutely and at much lower magnitudes than people do... We can feel the vibration of both sound and solid objects, but we are in that regard to a snake in same class difference as we are to a dog, regarding the sense of smell with a dog`s own... But, its a good narrative either way...
I think the snake snuffing out the candle is supposed to be a reference to Zatoichi; he would often slice the candles in a room to darken it to give himself an advantage in a fight (because he's blind)
And the thing that made the RobinxStarfire ship work in this show was they had cute moments that made them, and the audience feel like they had something going. They talked, they went on the occasional date, like the amusement park where you meet Starfire's sister, and even though Robin was forced into the prom against his will, Starfire still went with him, and Robin got to dance with her, because they love each other. Their chemistry felt convincing, real, and wholesome.
And when Starfire got mad Robin said she wasn't his girlfriend, him being flustered and thinking she doesn't understand how humans use that word, then revealing that she kind of does have a clue what it means. And even though the way she said it is still a little bit up for interpretation, you know clearly that she wanted it one way.

I love that the Old Woman spent the entire episode trolling Robin. I laughed the hardest every time she was on the screen, and that is saying something, since this whole episode was hilarious.
It wasn't trolling, it was a test to make sure he was worthy. It's actually pretty smart how she went about it
I like to think that she had also trained Batman. It would explain why Robin was able to find the exact village he needed to go to start the journey.
She could just tell Robin what she means but she wants him to learn it so it will sink in better. When Oracles do this it comes off as lame but when mentors do it there's usually a purpose if the writer is any good.

I stopped the video when Cyborg 'fake chastised' BB & StarFire to re-look up the scenes in full. It's always surprisingly pleasant to see how things have managed to holdup over at least a decade, especially when it's a goldy without being a super-oldy like this.
I think that the reason that kataro was 'hiding' wasn't to try to fool the audience, but to portray that robin, if not everyone else, didn't know that he was there at all.

It is a japanese swordsmanship thing of sensing intent. To a fictional degree he basically sensed out and predicted the snakes intent and read his location with his intent.
Like when you sit down and a guy tries to strike you in the head with bamboo or something and you gotta dodge at the exact moment they strike.
I guess the heavy fiction version of it is Observation Haki

I also like to think that Robin was able to pick up on this trick so quickly was because of his training with batman, who often makes it a point to train blindfolded or in very dark conditions
Confronting evil often requires flexibility, but one can find ways to be flexible without bending their moral code. Its often harder than just being inflexible or giving in to evil, but its worth it.
Look at how Superman stopped the Elite in Supernan Vs the Elite.
also, if you have to do something less than ideal to gain something better, you still have to pay for it. If it's really worth it, you won't mind making that compensation.

The world rarely rewards hard work over taking from others. Normally those rewards are rather miniscule as well. Being a good person doesnt always put food on the table. For some with bad luck being a good person can lead to a miserable death. For others it just leads to suffering. Thats why I like the spiderman saying better. After all if one has the power and can afford to be kind why not? Yes you will likely never be any more successful in the future but if you can spare such kindness why shouldn't you?

@@Spearra I think the saying is "an ounce of prevention is cheaper than a pound of cure", aka exercising and eating right is cheaper than open heart surgery. The same applies here. Learning to do thing the right way gives a foundation that is flexible and which can be further built upon, while cheating and shortcuts leaves you vulnerable and without recourse when they inevitably fail.
On the tamaranean clothing thing, they absorb uv/solar light so they wear as little clothing as possible to absorb as much as possible. They are also physically expressive and intimate so they don't care about exposing themselves.

One of my favorite parts of this episode is still the fact that the rest of the Titans, despite their misgivings with him throughout the series, respect and admire Robin so much that they're having fun acting as him while wearing his suits
Integrity is a deep topic, and one of my favorites.
I've broken integrity down into three basic forms: Considerate, Lawful, and Righteous.
Considerate integrity honors your fellow people. An example is simply picking up garbage you walk past on the sidewalk and putting it in a proper receptacle.
Lawful adheres to the laws and regulations. A simple example would be not cheating in a game with other competing players.
Righteous is the hardest to simplify, and logically the hardest to practice, in part because it's the most abstract. Righteous integrity identifies a wrong within society, and seeks to correct it. Frequently these are things that are not covered by laws, or are covered, but the law itself is corrupt. The most obvious example, if you are familiar with US history, is the Underground Railroad. If you aren't I'd suggest looking them up. More modern examples would be attending a protest against one of the myriad corrupt laws being created, or simply joining on with a Habitat for Humanity build.
Many would tell you- "integrity is doing the right thing." That's not wrong, but the "right thing" is a pretty nebulous concept. A book I read many years ago put it as "Doing the right thing regardless of if anyone was watching." That one stuck with me. But still kept that "right thing" relatively nebulous. It wasn't until many years later I began really breaking down the "right thing." I look at honesty as the foundation of integrity. If you are doing the right thing by chance, or in order to manipulate for your gain- that's NOT integrity. You have to intend to be doing the right thing- choosing to. Further, the "right thing" at any given time or situation changes, and sometimes the "right thing" isn't right at all. Additionally- Sometimes forms of integrity contradict each other. Frequently, Righteous and Lawful can become at odds with each other. (Think the Underground Railroad.)
Integrity is complicated. It's hard to stick with. Especially when others are succeeding at your expense. It stings when you are trying so hard and mess up. But... it's worth it.
Welcome to my frustration with a certain day shift CSI in the original CSI Crime Scene investigation. He spent so much of his carrer kissing ass to get ahead and getting criminals on nothing but surface based evidence that can be interpreted either way.
Isn't integrity honesty to your ideals,
1st one is conscientiousness,
2nd one is Fairness,
3rd one is very complex as you say.

@@motianton Strictly speaking, no. Ideals are based on how you were raised and decisions you made about the world. You could have the ideal that it's ok to steal now and then, so long as you don't get caught, or don't hurt anyone in the process, or as long as the thing won't be missed. (inclusive or)
Personally, I generally can't see stealing being justifiable. The one example I can think of is stealing people from their "owners," (underground railroad) and that is simply because the combined weight of righteous and considerate integrity overshadow the knock against lawful. There is an argument for stealing pets from abusive owners, but I think there are better routes for that. It's by measuring the weight of integrity hits and gains that I make choices of how I'll act. (try, at the very least. I'm far from perfect)
As to that being moralizing, maybe that is true to a certain degree. There are certain things that societally we deem wrong, that are fairly universally deemed wrong. Best rule of thumb for that: I wouldn't want that done to me (or, if living a rough life: it sucks, but they just beat me to the punch- it still sucks aka, you still don't like that it happened). Or, as in the case of natural resources: I wouldn't want xyz to run out. (Look up tragedy of the commons to understand about NRES stuff.)
@@Eranderil thank you for clarifying, I have a persona gripe w people who say stuff that follows the patterns of... If more people in ways I think were moral we'd be a better society.
It is extremely arrogant, assuming that you know enough about the area in which you reside that you can plot that very complex web of human drives and desires.
And often misses that especially with something as touchy as bigotry, people forget that even the most reviled hateful person was once a bouncing baby. I do not however think it should be your life goal to change said people. But preventing a person like that from being born again. Sort of ideological genocide.
Tl;dr you have some good ideas, and I can sense you've mulled over these for quite a bit.
@@motianton Thank you. I'd like to think that I have mulled this over an amount, as I have more or less based my life around trying to refine these forms of integrity within myself to become a better person.
I did miss one aspect in my rule of thumb though: the idea of "if I was in that situation, I'd appreciate it if [fill in blank]" which is a lot of the ground that considerate integrity covers, such as grabbing trash from the street. Sometimes, stuff gets away from us, and I know for me it feels BAD. So I always hope someone else can catch it for me. In return, when I see stuff, I try to make a point to snag it and trash it.
Tldr: Thanks, I try. Do unto others with a pay-it-forward mentality, and try to do the things you'd appreciate done for you for others.
This episode I used to think was kind of lame since it was Robin centric, but as someone who has studied Martial Arts for years I have a new respect for it, mainly the value of hard work, dedication and relying on your own strength.

You know one thing I love about shady is that he is a legitimately good dude. He’s not a victim. He holds integrity and honesty in high regard. And when he reviews a show the lesson he takes away from it is always worth it as well as enjoyably entertaining
While I consider myself to be a good person, I'm not a very nice nor considerate one. I don't like people and don't really care how I make them feel unless they're close to me. Some (not me) would argue those are the traits of a bad person.

3:24 I think what's important here is to show just how ruthless Kitaro is. Despite the gesture of a seemingly fair dual, Robin failed to realize that his foe would easily cheat whenever they wanted to.
It's also part of the moral of the story. Robin challenges Kotaro as if it's going to be a fair fight with honor, only to get whupped and he blames himself for "not being strong enough". But through the journey, he encounters several beings who are far stronger than him and at a clear advantage, but learns to outwit them to win their trials. When he understands this and manages to beat Kotaro, it slowly dawns on him WHY cheaters never prosper and that his loss wasn't because he "wasn't strong enough" but because he was too overconfident. Not disciplined enough.
“The best version of yourself that is most worthy of your goals” is such a raw line and great piece of advice, thanks for that and the awesome video in general 👍
I love the original Teen Titans series! it was one of my all time favorites growing up! i especially loved this episode, Robin going on a quest to regain his confidence in martial arts was awesome!!!

Robin's pride actually fits in to the period in the comics too when he leaves Batman. One of the reasons he left Batman was that he felt like he was skilled enough to be Batman's equal. Even though Batman viewed him as an equal and treated him as one everyone else in Gotham viewed him as Batman's sidekick and eventually came to believe that Batman viewed him the same way. He eventually leaves Gotham and even though he does come back to Gotham occasionally to help Batman he spends most of this period with the Titans. He eventually overcomes his personal pride and its negative effects on him and becomes Nightwing, with his relationship with Batman becoming like what it used to be but he no longer see's Batman as looking down on him.
All-star Superman taught me the way to live. To do the right thing because it's the right thing, regardless of the promise of reward or punishment.
Spider-Man comics taught me the same thing.

When I saw the episode as a kid, I never thought it was supposed to be surprise that kotaru stole Robin’s stuff and was following. I always saw it as “oh they’re gonna fight again and Robin is gonna be at a bigger disadvantage.” I saw it as building tension as each time you saw more of him the fight was closer. Could be me grasping at straws but that’s how I saw it.

I chalked this up to Robin taking the True Master's admonition about him taking things too seriously to heart. Instead of the anger the other Titans were all expecting, instead he just takes it in stride and echoes Raven's remark about the mask making him feel cool, too. Thus, the others falling over.
It pleases me to see that there’s another who’s willing to stand by their morals even if it inconveniences them.
Being the adult in a situation is often the hardest part of it. Learning to stop yourself and then really look at the situation is hard, anyone that says otherwise is being deceptive. What is harder still is to want to hear both sides of an argument so that you can think about it first. In such a situation being able to take given information and make a series of thoughts on the problem to figure out what, how, why and then figure your conclusion when everyone else has chosen a side. It's doing the right thing by not just going along because it's popular or the 'in thing' to do.
In other words, when you change like the wind. No one will believe you when you speak, you'll always just be a voice in the breeze.
One thing I really appreciate about your videos is the message you send about hard work and integrity, I've always been a big believer in it doesn't matter how big or small, or if you're the only one that's going to see it, if you do a job you should do it right
One of my dad's slogans that he constantly told me while growing up was "Any job worth doing is worth doing right."
I'm 100% down with Shady teaching more life lessons through Teen Titans
Episode that taught me something was Only Human. More cyborg centric but I was just diagnosed with type one diabetes and they episode really helped me be okay with my limitations and even being able to overcome them. This whole show really helped me in a dark time and probably helped others too.
If you managed to get a full grown adult to enjoy the cartoon...you know you truly succeeded to get a bigger audience since my dad enjoyed watching it with me lol
It's easy to forget in modern society where we can very easily see where people cheat, often because they tell on themselves on the internet, that one's honor, once lost, is hard to regain. Integrity May suck sometimes but if you can't look yourself in the mirror or people around you know you're a scoundrel, it may not be worth it to take the easy path

I think I understand why that is. It's the hardest because you know in your heart of hearts that it is right...and that isn't an easy pill to swallow.

I think this version of Robin is far superior to the Teen Titans GO version. Despite having no powers, he makes up for it with hard work and dedication. In GO, He's just one massive joke that is objectively the worst person in the titans. He has virtually no positive qualities to him and is mostly just there to be made fun of.

So something about this. The move was technically legitimate because he didn't use the staff as a weapon. He used it as a means of gaining momentum. It's important to remember that anything czn be a weapon and anything could be a tool. He didn't hit him with the staff, he just used it as a means to gain enough force to use his move. An easy way to win.

The point is not to keep the identity of the antagonist following Robin a secret, it is to show him slightly obscured, to make clear that even if we see him, Robin does not.
This episode will always be the most memorable because of all the important lessons it had to teach Robin and the viewers.

the thing I think is adorable, is his integrity. the fact that he wouldn't fight someone with an obvious disadvantage is sweet and even strong-hearted. the thing I think is funny, is that the snake still sees him, robin just doesn't know that. in fact, he unwittingly gave the snake a bigger advantage by fighting in the dark. the light was always for the challenger, not the snake, since the snake is blind by his eyes. the snake has pits on his face that allow for heat sensing and in that way, the snake, can still see him. that means, the snake was given a significantly bigger advantage than robin, robin in his ignorance, gave himself a heavy handicap than just fighting the snake as is.
I was a little too young to remember a lot about Teen Titans when it came out, but this episode is one i distinctly remember watching with my dad when I was a little kid, thanks for reminding me of this episode

This show was a masterpiece! I truly wanted an adult sequel show akin to How Long is Forever. Then DC released the live-action Titans, and the abysmal Titans GO, and my hopes and dreams to see Nightwing lead this team with dignity and awesomeness were shattered like their continuity.
I always love these vids on morality, it's sadly a too rare thing to hear someone share sound morals on doing the right thing, even if not easy, and not succumbing to victim mentality, especially when it's taking over so much of discourse in our modern world.
We gotta have strong foundations to build not only ourselves but our society up, you can't cry a good life into being or bitterly play victim until a grand society forms.

I absolutely love this episode and your take on it is the same as my own. I'd love for you to do some more episodes or even story arcs of Teen Titans; Cyborg coming to terms with himself, Raven's problems with isolationism and loneliness, Beast Boy, and Starfire learning practically everything she does over the course of this show.

This was one of the episodes I loved the most as a kid, growing up it took a new meaning as I was a manipulative guy, not bad persay but this helped me take that road of honesty and integrity more seriously, silly as that might be
Reminds me of that one episode of a shaolin monk cartoon. This kid was super serious and had gone back in time, and decided to train under his temples founder. The founder asked him to get a pebble outta his hand. The entire episode he chases the founder, trying and failing to get the pebble. Eventually he got frustrated and wondered why he couldn't keep up or get the pebble. The founder crouches near him and says "did you try asking me for it? " he looks at him and asks "may I please have the pebble?" And the founder says "of course" and gives it to him. The young monk then realized that despite doing his best to get the pebble, he never could because he tried to TAKE it. The founder then smiled and said "I have nothing to teach you, you've learned the only lesson you had left"

Nice vid shady. My favorite Teen Titans episode was "Only Human", and the message of that one stuck with me. The one where Cyborg learns his human side is more stronger than his robot one, since it is overall the one that pushes him past his limit.
You have to Appreciate this integral part to Robin's character, he's always a bidding by the right path. It's something even batman taught him, never fall off the path of good. Integrity an important trait because it teaches you to be the best version of yourself even when others may spit on it

There is no reward for integrity only self satisfaction, and achieving your goal usually leads to more satisfaction then that(for a lot of people). That is why integrity will always be the minority because the good holds no value in the scenario and the bad route holds all the value. You have to make your integrity a strength because the rest of the world is intent on exploiting it as a weakness.

There is no DIRECT reward, the skills and values you build up by doing something the "right" way will benefit you in the future. Moreso, the value of doing the "right" thing will always yield positive result albeit to the system rather than the individual.
This also weirdly seems to play into Batman own ideology of working on the darkness unlike most other JL heroes and why he toes the line but never crosses it (Red Hood) , which is cool because this is more or less supposed to be when Robin left Batman due to ideologies and starts to become his own person/hero
Achieving goals does yield satisfaction, but that satisfaction is always fleeting. Sometimes wanting is better than having. This is why you have billionaires using shady tactics to make additional billions, even though they have more than enough to live comfortably. Integrity gives satisfaction regardless of circumstance, and so it lasts forever.
As a Miraculous fan, I always thought that Miraculous was more about the effect of secret identities on someone so young then the characters themselves. Plus I always feel like we got to know the characters well. Especially Adrien, he gets so much development

Robin is more skilled than all the other titans together at physical combat and thinking on his feet. he also knows almost everything about their abilities and how they use them.
Usually this helps him coordinate his team but sometimes he has to fight them, and in that case allows a normal human with his gadgets, to defeat superpowered mutants, an alien, a combat ready cyborg, and a literal demigod.
This is iconic. What an absolute stellar video... Shady. You keep stepping up, and we'll have to climb a mountain to drop a like, at this rate! But seriously. What a great break down. And an important one too.

Awesome review 👍 This episode is one of my favorites as well as my father's also. As I listened to your discussion I realized that this "victim mentality" is one manifestation of a core inner thought that people use to justify their actions, and this can go for both sides, not just those claiming to be victims. " I am doing x because of y, and I deserve x because of what these people or this person or this group did", can be used by anyone with a mentality to blame others instead of wanting to take a hard look at themselves. The same can be said for those who want to claim they are superior to others without wanting to do the work for themselves. As you said before, everyone is always looking for the "easy way" and it's always easier to pass the buck and blame someone else for your actions.

The easy way isn't necessarily the wrong way; it is just a different way. There is a saying, "Work smarter...not harder." You can push a square or you can push a sphere to get to the finish line. What is important is that you learned a new perspective. Edit: neither the square or the sphere is the wrong answer nor is either necessarily the right answer. If you needed to gain height, a square is more stable to stand on. Both can be right but for different reasons.
To be fair, that depends on what the task requires. The person might have requested a square, not a sphere
