I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - there are youtubers out there with 1mill+ subs that haven’t got a clue how to combine the story, lighting, depth of detail and information (relevant to us), delivery, edit and basic art like Josh does. How this channel hasn’t properly blown up yet I don’t know - but it will, I’m sure - and I’ll be glad when it does because he’s a bloody grafter... Josh - another amazing video. And this is highly tempting for the BMPCC4K...

That's the only way the test would work... DJI Provide you with an assembly chair for this purpose alone

Yo! So a few things. The 3D focus will be available for sale on the DJI website in a few weeks. It's $169, and requires the focus motors and the RS2 but not the Ravens Eye wireless transmitter. If you want the Rs2 to track you, then you will need the transmitter. I'll post the link in the description when it's up!!
So the first few shots are out of focus with the f0.95--- this was more to show proof of concept, the focus plane of f0.95 is razor thin and most camera companies won't make autofocus lenses faster than 1.4 (with a few exceptions).
The real winner here is all my Black magic peeps. This rig now makes cameras like the Black magic 6k unstoppable, and the 4K worth even more! That is if you don't mind spending the $1000 for a gimbal + $169 sensor.
Got some more thoughts on the gimbal later, I am buried in anamorphia edits and BTS footage. So that's all for now!

The cool thing about LIDAR is that for every one pulse the device sends out, it receives multiple returns. The resulting 3D point cloud is so dense and quickly gathered that autofocus applications are possible. There's still tons of room for improvement but we'll get there. Great vid Josh, get some sleep

It's so cool seeing LiDAR showing up everywhere. It's what is used in the Waymo self-driving cars. Maybe a Panasonic camera will have good AF with this now, lmao
Lidar has been around for years, the only difference is it is now at a price point where it can enter the domestic market
If Panasonic is smart enough they will integrate it into GH6 instead of that loser DFD system good only for photographers!
I was thinking the exact same thing. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes LiDAR to complement (or replace) DPAF...
@Gap You should look at Waymo self driving cars. I took a test drive in it and it can see from a football field away and past houses and fences. It all depends on the type of LiDAR used.

I recently came across your videos, and I immediately bought a BMPCC 4k, Ronin S, and a bunch of other things just to take my mind of the illness. Yo Josh Yo, in my TH-cam feed there have been ten different videos all about the new DJI gimbal. You are the only one in that bunch to show the lidar and you do it in such a creative and real world relatable way. Congrats on another great one and I can’t wait for Anamorphia 2. :)
First to the GOAT review. LiDAR is the future. I can see someone like Panasonic (who’s WAY behind) leaping ahead and adopting this in the GH series for autofocus.
Their trying to actually! Panasonic announced last year they are working on a AF system called Time of Flight that works in a similar way to lidar on sensor. Still wish they used PDAF as a stop gap on the S1, but hoping their next model has it.
What I like about this video is that your showing a solution for autofocus rather than saying buy another expensive camera to resolve autofocus issues. I really like this video, well done great content. I will defiantly subscribe.

Lots talking about the gimbals but nothing else about this...Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention, this is a MASSIVE leap forward and a HUGE game changer for me. Listen bro, you obviously didn't see the punching bag in the video, mkay.... John Mayer eats Navy seals for breakfast now. He can do 7 pushups, 27 camera curls, and knows how to balance an oversized anamorphic lens on a gimbal rated for 5.6kg.

I'm wondering if the autofocus system will work with my trusty ol' Nikon D810 and 16-35mm... as it is, the autofocus needs so much light to be reliable... ah, would be nice. The autofocus works the exact same with any camera and lens. As long as you calibrate properly, the actual effectiveness does not matter what lens or camera. It's all in the LiDAR sensor and focus motors.

Its for stills only but with the Techart LM-EA7 you can autofocus any manual lense using phasetetection of the sony bodys

There will always be guys who say "naaah I prefer to focus manually at 0.9, I don't trust technology and it's more arty, it makes me look like I know what I'm doing.".
I'm one of those guys, and most of the time I miss the focus "man if I had fast autofocus at 0.95..."🤣
I can put any manual lense on my Techart LM-EA7 adapter and have autofocus using the cameras phase detection :P
Fuji has autofocus built into their 50mm F/1 so yeah...
@@kucerafilmstudios6415 Fuji lens is for APSC sensor. F/1 in APSC just equivalent F1.5 in FF, it's not close to sony,canon FF lens. Good try fuji I will buy FF to make more bokeh,it's ways cheaper

@@gian8602 this lens is a hybrid. It is not a Focus by wire lens but it also doesn't have a hard stop, just kind of a bump. I guess it wouldn't work for this system and it's unfortunate cause just like you and I, it is the combo that most people have.

@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI do you know that the A7SIII doesn't have shutter angle: the most basic thing you can ask for in Cinema camera applications. Point is: GH5 serves as a feature rich camera that can still out-perform in many other ways compared to other cameras.
Hey @@CallMeRabbitzUSVI , I get what your saying. But what a lot of people dont think about is it's pretty expensive to move to a new camera system. You have to invest in brand new lenses, batteries, and any other accessories you have (battery grips, XLR adapters etc...). Sony for example: I have 3 GH5's. It would be pretty expensive to buy 3 Sony A7S 3's (plus sony lenses are so expensive). Its actually a steal to invest $1500 to get amazing auto focus on the GH5's which were almost perfect cameras (Plus I need a new gimbal anyway been using my Crane 2 for 3 years and its slightly broken lol).

Update- I asked DJI directly and they said you get the following controls:
Start/stop Rec.
Iso
Aperture
Pull focus electronically (assuming this is without the lidar sensor, and only with non-manual lenses)
Trigger autofocus (maybe this is with the lidar sensor since the bmpcc4k does not have autofocus?)
How is this channel under 1 million subscribers? It’s the better than the other big channels by far.

Hey Josh! As someone who just picked up a camera for the first time in my life 3 months ago, every single thing you mentioned in your video was alien to me and yet i absorbed so much. I also love the little detail that you mentioned the caveat of lenses with hard stops. Things like that sometimes get overlooked. I just recently deep dived on the concept of the circle of confusion and your video was incidentally an awesome exercise in that concept for me as well!

That LiDAR focus system blew my mind. 🤯 I’d love a version of it that works outside of the RS2 too, on a tripod or shoulder mount rig (in addition to the RS2, of course!)
