As a trainer, in the future, I would use something with a faster praise like a clicker, then you can give real upbeat praise with the treat so when you stop having food rewards you don't get a puppy revolt! ;) Also, you should not use their name after "good". Instead, use the verbal cue for the correctly performed command, "good sit/wait/down". It's a trainer's preference for about 4/5 trainers I know, but use what works with the puppy's personal reward drive, food, toy, or affection. And HAVE FUN!
this reminds me of when we were training our husky mix. she's to a point now where all i have to do is give her a certain look or say her name in a specific tone and she knows what i want her to do.
12 weeks old and his paws are the size of your hands - I think the breeder sold you a grizzly :-). A beautiful dog and very well trained for its age - you guys deserve each other!
Aw so cute wen u givin command u kinda shout abit wen frost older ill have to keep shouting as long as ur command is firm you can just speak instead of raisin ur voice lovely dog thanx for showin him off xx
If you train them, they'll be so loyal that they won't wanna leave your side! :) They might make a mistake and bite you if you were giving them a treat or they were playful, But with my dog, Guinness (Geh-ness, he was a Pitbull Boxer mix), We said "gentle" and after a while he didn't take the food from you, he licked it out of your hand to make sure he didn't bite you. He was such a sweetie :)
Malamutes are so hard to train because they are soooo smart. They are so independent and have minds of their own. They reason and don't see the purpose behind training unlike other breeds who mindlessly obey.
Heh. Just looking at how deliberate and slow those moves he makes are after the commands makes me realize how capable we actually are of communicating between species. This is a very important lesson in terms of the trouble we have communicating between eachother, and how with sufficient effort and groundwork the boundaries between any living being can be crossed. Also, oh, uh.... I accidentially went into preachmode. Sorry.
Hey, thank you very much, this technique has helped me a lot with my Malamute puppy. I used the same technique as is, the only thing I have not done is to take the floor.
OMG honest to god, his cuteness would get in the way of training. I'd be too tempted to just cuddle him...which explains why my dog only knows "sit"....hahaha
haha ... I have a Mal who is 12 weeks now ... he tries to trick us into giving him a treat by sitting and giving his paw (without being asked to do so) ... so smart :P
