Same as any breed it takes training and patience. My 11 year old mal has been off-leash almost every day of his life at parks and beaches across the country and we've never had an issue. Mals are very reward focussed- use the right reward and a big one to start and you're on the right track! Lots of fun, praise and communication- just like in this vid!! I suggest a lot off directional changes too to encourage off leash following. And practice, practice practice!

@BowieSalvatore It's probably because he took a dip in the pool. But usually they're pretty smooth and fluffy if they're taken care of and eat GOOD food. Their diet is a big factor in their coat. He could be blowing his coat at the time too, which it'll usually look a little funny while he does that. I don't know if you made a decision by now or not, but make sure you talk to a breeder about them before you actually get one. Malamutes demand a good portion of your time.

No. They can but they do it rarely. My boy 'speaks' on cue but it usually takes him a minute or two to get himself psyched enough to bark! In normal situations he often play barks or barks at my flatmates dog to tell her to shut up when she barks at visitors !
That doesn't mean they can't be vocal though- some talk alot with howls and chewbacca noises. Mine used to make growlie noises as part of his normal social repertoire but I think he learnt that often makes people run away so he's stopped!

That is a gorgeous and massive dog. :) I really like the way yours looks, some malamutes grow up being very fluffy but i like that yours has semi-short hair. Beautiful dog :D

@Rugbystorm: I have a giant alaskan mal who is 14 mos old and pushing 120-130lbs...up until he was about 11 mos he would play bite, mostly my kids, when he would play with them, or would randomly run by them and nip thier legs playfully...Its annoying and i started spraying with him water everytime he did it..Hes 14 mos now and he doesnt do it anymore.

Did your dog bite a lot when he was younger? I´m asking because I have one and he doesn´t stop bitting!

If you don't mind me asking, when did you start offleash training? Our Reya is a little over 4 months. We have down and sit pretty well down pat and are working on come and stay at the moment.

Just be careful with the whole off leash thing. I read and heard about many stories where people have lost their Malamutes forever. Malamutes are very nomadic and predaceous. Especially if its an intact male. Looks like you are doing great with it, just be cautious!
