Yes. This is it. This is how to use the caged system and the arpeggios. There’s 8 or 9 chord shapes, across both octaves each position. I wish this was the first thing I’d learned. Thx.

SHAPES LOL.I learned all this on my own but it took longer. I've Been playing 40+ years. All this to me is confusing and your not supposed to think when you're playing guitar. Its feeling emotion: JIMI Hendrix Never knew SHAPES: BECAUSE the word "SHAPES" wasn't used in those days.
I have no idea what notes are called which I am soloing ,,, but I know what chord the song is in. I can keep up with guys like Eric Clapton he doesn't lose me:and I've played with Buddy Guy and long as I hear the song in my head I can play it( 90% of the time)and knowing the root 1st then it all comes together very easily for me. I was fortunate enough to have worked & jammed w/ NUGENT: Buddy: Doyal Bramel ll. Talking with SRV being around better players always helps.

Intervals and basing stuff on chord shapes ..... then u have a pallet to be YOU !

I have tried teaching this to numerous people over the years. Pretty much exactly what you have here. I am now just going to refer them to your video instead of me sitting down with them. At the end of the day, most people just don't put the work in.
I always add to my students that they need to memorize every note on the 5th and 6th strings as those are mostly the root notes for building these chords.

Guitar playing is about shapes and patterns, and how they recur up and down the neck, in
every position except when using open strings. Even then it's true as long as you consider
the nut as a barre or a "zero fret." The principles are the same but because of the open
strings, finger usage (or non-usage) is a bit of a curve ball. The CAGED System makes
total sense but can be confusing when explained verbally. I think sometimes people see it
as "paralysis by analysis," but by showing examples while describing how the chord shapes
work, it becomes more easily understood. Well done! It really does unlock some doors to
    more creative playing.

You still using the caged system V.B.?

    • @VonBluesman
      @VonBluesman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Tim Bryant Yes Sir. The CAGED System is something you learn and use for the rest of your life when playing guitar. You imagine seeing the chords up and down the neck in the shape of the C, A, G, E, D, chord and then you play the 1st (root note) the 3rd, and the 5th note of the chord most of the time for soloing. You can add the 7th, 9th, and 13th if you wish. You play other notes as well but as long as you play those 1,3,5, you make a tone pleasing to the ear for the chord being played. You know how to play a E chord ? Slide an E chord up one fret and use your index finger for the bar, that becomes an F chord, slide the same shape up the neck the the 2nd fret and it becomes a F sharp chord, slide the same E shaped chord up to the 3rd fret and it becomes a G chord, the same sound that a Open G chord makes, keep on sliding the same shape all the way up the neck and the name of the chord changes with every fret until you get to the 12th fret and then the chords repeat their same name all over again up until you get to the body of the guitar and run out of frets, the end of the neck. Learn the notes on the 6th E string (the Big E string) this will help you name the chords. Learn the notes on the 5th string, the A string and start off by playing chords in the shape of a A chord. Use your index finger to bar on the 5th string at the first fret and the chord becomes a Bb (B flat) slide the same shape up to the second fret using the 5th string as your bar root note and the chord becomes a B chord, using the same A shaped chord pattern with your index finger on the 5th string 3rd fret, the chord becomes a C major chord, same sound as a open C chord, 4th fret it becomes a C sharp, 5th fret it becomes a D chord, and so on until you reach the 12th fret and the chords start repeating their name all over agin until you run out of frets, neck, and reach the guitar body. This is why you need to learn the notes on the 6th E (big E string) and the notes on the 5th A string. The notes will be the root note name of the chord. Once you have learned that, you can play major chords all over the neck. The minor chords and 7th chords will be easy and second nature to you once you learn the major chords for the 6th and 5th string. If you sound out the major scale, Doe, Ray, Me, Fa, So, La, Tee, Doe. You will know the numbers of the chord, the Root (bass note of the chord is always number 1, that is the Doe sound, the position on the neck fret is what determines the letter name of the chord. Doe is 1, root note, Ray, is 2nd, Me is 3rd, Fa is 4th, So is 5th, La is 6th, Tee is 7th, Doe is 8 which is an octave above the first note you play, then you start to name the same notes again to know the major scale of the chord. Start on the 6th big E string, do the Do Ray Me Fa So La Tee Doe, and start over again when you get to the 4th G string working your way up to the 1st E string (skinniest string). Try playing a E shaped bar chord on the 5th fret of the 6th string, this would be a A major chord. Play the Doe-Doe notes and you will know the numbers of the chord, if you keep on going past the 8th Doe Root sound, that becomes a 8th note, then Ray the next note becomes a 9th note, etc working your way up the scale to get the 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, chords. If you start the Doe Ray Me etc all over again as 1, 2, 3, 4, up to 8 this becomes a octave higher sound of the same chord you sounded out starting at the 6th string. I hope this helps. Rewind and rewind and rewind and keep on trying and you will figure it out. You must first learn how to play the chords in the open position, which is the Cowboy chord shapes played closest to the nut and tuners on your guitar neck. You have to know the C chord, A chord, G chord, E chord, D chord, that spells out the CAGED System and all you do is use the same shape of these chords moving them up the neck by changing your fingers and using your index finger as the bar in place of the nut on the neck of the guitar. Papa’s course will help you out and you can always email him. Guthrie Trapp always says he uses the CAGED System every time he plays the guitar. Players use the system, some do not even realize it because they never learned it, but learning it makes it so much easier to find the key notes in a chord all over the neck. When you can do that you can play with any singer in the world whether they have a high pitched or a low pitched voice and you can play like Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Sting, LED Zeppelin, any band and anyone out there. It is a process of knowing the chords, the chord names, the chord tones and that is what makes up all of your music. There is also the major and minor pentatonic scale, along with modes, etc., but most you will use a pentatonic and major scale combined. Buy the course, you get a money back guarantee and Papa will help you with your questions, and if you want to ask me anything about it, please feel free and I will try and help you all I can. You can’t go wrong, your guitar will always be there and you can really learn something new or improve every single day you play if you try and apply yourself. Hope this helps. Take care. Good luck.

@@VonBluesman Dude, how kind of you to take the time to reply. This past year I have learned the five positions and the caged system both of them combined have improved my playing and fret board knowledge so much. I see the chord shapes and the positions that the chord sits in. I can now improve like never before. But like any art its a lifetime of learning and there is still more. As I play with the pentatonic positions and caged in mind once again, what a gift this has been.

Tim Bryant You are welcome. I forgot to mention on the chord change patterns, it goes like this always in this order no matter what order you chose to play the chords in. Most simple songs on the radio use a pattern like the 1, 4, 5, chord changes. The pattern is the 1 chord is a Major chord, the 2nd chord is a Minor chord the 3rd chord is a Minor chord, the 4th chord is a Major chord, the 5th chord is a Major chord, the 6th chord is a Minor chord and the 7th chord is a Augmented chord you will never use hardly ever. Most simple songs are 1, 4, 5, all major with the exception every once in a while they throw in a minor. Google guitar songs with just 3 chords and it will amaze you how many there are and how many hundreds of songs you can play. With C major being your root chord (#1) the 2nd chord would be D Minor, 3rd chord E minor, 4th chord F Major, 5th chord G Major. 6th chord A minor. Using the numbers is also known as the Nashville Number System. Hope this helps. Holler, Papa will answer your email questions and go into more depth in his courses. Take care.

You're awesome bro (Brett), love your vibe, thanks for all the efforts, I've seen a lot of your vids over the years. I subscribed right away, Im a major Hendrix fan BTW, the 1st vid I found you thru was re; Hendrix. You have more 'Charisma', humour, good vibes/watchable than ten of most people on these vids, and bless them all of course. 'No need to hurt anyone'. Keep it up brother. Too bad my Math teachers weren't like you; I'd have learned something haha, they were all sooooo boring. ''You Rawk'', etc

I just had that WOW moment you talked about! Holy Crap! Suddenly I can solo up and down the whole neck and not worry about playing the wrong notes!! (Well, at least on a basic level right now) I'm definitely going to consider purchasing Caged Unleashed. For years I've been trying to solo from attempting to memorize and remember all the notes in all the positions note by note. 🤣 I had heard the term CAGED before but for some reason I always dismissed it until today. Man what a moron I've been. 😅

Dude I reckon light grey plastic covers for the coils in the Humbucker would look killer on that shell pink / white / rosewood colour scheme. That or royal blue. Or navy. It Daphne. Something blue (but not lake placid!)!!
Just a thought, but cheap, easy, and I think a total killer improvement. But hey, it's still choice as is, each to their own, but think about it will ya!? Cheers!
