    I've always felt like your lessons were just above my play grade but I would watch anyway. Sometimes down the road something might click with me. Today you really connected the dots with seeing the CAGED chord in the pentatonic scale. Being melodic just became an obtainable option. Thank you

      Pretty sure it's the A Major Pentatonic scale!

    • @williamsavran9256
      @williamsavran9256 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is the "box 1" shape of the F# minor pentatonic scale. That is also the A major pentatonic scale that would fit over the "A" and "G" shaped chords in CAGED.

    • @williamsavran9256
      @williamsavran9256 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right, that is the A major pentatonic that fits over an "E" shaped chord. F# minor and A major share the same notes.. The shape you linked is also the F# minor pentatonic shape that fits over the "D" chord, or what's called position 2 or box 2. It all about what you consider to be the root of the scale.

    • @williamsavran9256
      @williamsavran9256 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you're right, but most of the time people just play all the notes in the box. He started on the 6th of the Amajor scale.

    I improvise when playing.#1. MY FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS DIRECT MY PLAYING#2 . JUST PLAYING SCALES IS NOT PLAYING LEAD GUITAR." THE TERMONOLOGY nowadays is different than 40 yrs ago.CAGED SYSTEM: AND CHORD SHAPES: IS KINDA HUMEROUS TO ME...TO MUCH THINKING? PERHAPS? POOR BEGINNERS. SHOW ALL THE POSITIONS U CAN PLAY LIKE AN "A" NOTE/ CHORD THERES 7EVEN DIFFERENT POSITIONS for playing in A, 7! Some chords 5.unless open. Its helpful to know where to go when playing leads in a say G chord.Chords have most of ur leads of the chords and their shapes or "positions". For starters it easy way to learn to maneuver up & down the entire neck.Without lifting your hand off the neck & just flowing...

    do you want millions of views? and subs? let me tell you what we want. 100's or do by 20 lol riffs of 80's rock songs from Motley to kiss and all in between you know them all. play just the main parts and put the freaken tabs on screen so we can actual learn chords etc... in a song that we know in a context that's way more fun. that way we learn and it's fast and easy. instead of a bunch of guitar theory and put your finger here and put that finguer there, this is in a/b sharp 13 and 6th notes and a half inteval going to the what the heck ever omg THAT would be best. there are not enough youtubers doing that on youtube.

  • @jimkostan9932
    @jimkostan9932 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    All these names like Caged systems and other stuff I've been playing 40+ yrs never heard of these when I was learning guitar. There were BB king box positions and of course endless scales but if I had to think about playing guitar it would suck.You get pass that stage after playing awhile.

    Thanks heaps for this Brett. I've seen enough youtube videos to grasp the CAGED system, which have been very helpful, but your style of delivery and your demonstration here really galvanised the concept for me. Looking forward to commiting my fingers this way, and to viewing more of your content. If it helps, I was led to your videos through Tim Pierce's channel, which I came to via Rick Beato. Liked and subscribed. Thanks again. Ben

    This is all based on Major, which is foreign to me since i am so used to playing blues. It all makes sense but feels like it would take me forever to get comfortable with this and be able to improvise without thinking everytime there is a chord change to see where i am at. But i am going to start working on this. The pentatonic minor scale gets very boring and repetitive after a while. Lol.

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember seeing an article in (I think) 'Guitar Player' magazine in probably the late 70's on the 'CAGED System.' I skimmed over it, but I guess I didn't really get it, as I thought the key to good soloing was learning a boat-load of scales. Had I embraced the system then I'd probably be soloing like a Guthrie Trapp disciple, instead of sounding like 'Lil' Wayne.'

    You might make a video on how every pentatonic scale has its own associated chord. How the Am pentatonic scale is associated with the G chord and so on. I ran with what you pointed out in your video, so I took it to the Nth degree and thought it should help me to remember my Pentatonic scales better.

  • @blkleblanc
    @blkleblanc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've been noodling in and out of the First (Minor)/ Fifth (Major) position of the pentatonic scale for a few months now; trying to map things out, focus on the landing on root notes, but I felt like I hit a wall. I started searching and it lead me to the world of arpeggios. I could see somewhat on how that could apply but it wasn't clear until I stumbled upon your video. This will help me find more notes outside of the pentatonic scale that I could use, to sound better within the progression of the song. Thank you

    Thanks. I've seen this concept before but didn't understand. Now I get it! That's a big thing. Suddenly I see how chord shapes relate to some of the pentatonic patterns and how you can add parts of the chords (arpeggios) to the pentatonics. You said it just right for me to finally hear it!

    I think I still don't quite understand why the arpeggios work when you take another chord shape and fit it into another chord shape pentatonic box. Like you played a D shape in the G shaped Pentatonic box and you played a C shape in the E shaped pentatonic box and I don't understand why the intervals just work

    • @d3faulta
      @d3faulta 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's playing the same chord with different shapes. The intervals work because the chord shapes give you notes that are part of the chord. You might be overthinking it

  • @fattyz1

    Yes this is real helpful. During covid, I memorized all the major scale positions and so, all the modes. But how the pick the notes and more importantly, to move up and down the fretboard and sound like something? The arpeggios are targets to aim for.

    Hey Brett ... thanks for this lesson and the 3 free lessons. Every time I check out one of your lessons, another door opens for me and the things other great guitarists seem to do so effortlessly suddenly lose their mystery and complexity thanks to your comprehensive, humorous and totally engaging delivery of their secrets.
    Just something, if you ever run out of ideas for your next video … I have noticed in many of your lessons, not to mention the 4 courses I own of yours, you do some incredibly tasteful ascending pentatonic runs … not the note sequence repetition stuff but the chromatic, string skipping, stacking with blues notes and major 3rd's stuff (boy was that a mouthful).
    I would love to see a full lesson on this if you get a chance … have a great festive season mate!

    Are arpeggios the triads within the pentatonic scales?

    • @BrettPapa
      @BrettPapa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the chord. When you start adding all of the chord arpeggios you will get more of a modal scale.

    Hey Brett, when you refer to position 1, 2 and so on do you mean Ionian Dorian etc? Thanks 😊

    Thank you Pappa. I already knew your videos but now I returned to them heavily. You know how to rock. And by the way. love you guitar sound. I intend to replace my bridge humbucker in my HSS strat for a weaker ( clearer one) just because I watched the video about your gear.
    Awesome sound.

      Me too. They share space so you are kinda right either way!

    Would it be correct to say also that, say, if the root note is on the 3rd string, then it's the 'D' shape? If the root note is on the 2nd string, then it's the 'C' shape, etc.?

    What is the brown and white box on top of the friedman amp?

    • @BrettPapa

      UA OX Box one of the best guitar inventions ever made! Basically a load box with a built in studio with effects. Total game changer!

    Your voice is way lower than your guitar, maybe lower the master on your amp 1 point or so, great lesson btw!

    You really have to think hard when playing like this!! These lessons help a lot. It's neat when you start to see how things connect, like how the C shape shares notes with the D shape. I like the way you suggested mixing it up. Just throwing in a few target notes from chord shapes mixed with my regular scale noodling helps a lot. Thanks...
