  • This is the video from my first day in Scotland's beautiful capital, Edinburgh. This trip was my first ever as a solo traveler, and I found Edinburgh to be absolutely perfect for that!

    Hi there! I'm Anne-Li - Danish girl, globetrotter, travel vlogger, blogger and digital nomad traveling the world with my partner in crime and long-term boyfriend Mathias. Spending a month in Budapest every summer taught us that traveling does not have to be expensive and that slow travel is the way to go - for us. We have been traveling full-time since September 2016, and we usually base ourselves in one place for at least a month or two. This way of traveling is not only budget friendly - it also means that we can take our time and really explore and enjoy the place we're in. We eat local food, shop at local markets, meet local people and enjoy experiencing different cultures - all the while seeking out the best wifi and exploring everything there is to explore. Everyday is another adventure, and we’d love for you to be part of it!

    I loved seeing Edinburgh through someone else's eyes. I was born and raised in Edinburgh and watching this really made me realise what a beautiful city I live in. Also didn't realise I used to walk past the writers museum every day. You're teaching me things about my own city!

  • @johnbisset4504
    @johnbisset4504 5 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    Nice job, it’s always fun seeing your home City, through an outsider’s eyes.
    I was born and raised in Edinburgh. Our first house was at the bottom of Victoria Street, for the first six months of my life.
    Then we moved down the Cowgate to Guthrie Street.
    Where we lived, until I joined the Army at 18 years old. After three years, my family has moved to a “Nicer” part of town.
    But I’m talking through the 1940’s to 1959. Ancient History to you.
    But it was a marvelous City to grow up in.
    For me and my Friends, a short walk to the Castle and Royal Mile. Back then entry to the Castle was free. As were most Museums and Art Galleries.
    During the Winter we spent many hours, in the Scottish Museum. One reason, free and warm and fun exhibits.
    I recall an old story, you reminded me of, an American asking a local Scot, directions, but couldn’t understand the man’s accent. Then a Man from Sweden came by, and translated the directions to the American. Thought that was hilarious.
    Hope you enjoy your visit, and get around to out of the way spots. Like that Graveyard.
    In my time there, I only saw Greyfriars, and were my Grandma was buried.
    When you mentioned the temperature, I knew the real reason I emigrated to Los Angeles. Lol
    Thanks for your fun vlog and have fun there.

    • @Holetsgo

      Wow, John, thank you so much for your comment! That was a really interesting read! 😀It must've been amazing to grow up in Edinburgh. Haha, I love that story! Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave such an interesting comment. I hope you enjoy life in LA!

      @johnbisset4504 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ho let's go!
      You made me laugh and a wee bit homesick. Even though I love Los Angeles.
      But miss just walking around and the History and all those authors I read growing up.
      You didn’t bring up Sir Arthur Doyle, of Sherlock Holmes game. After a Doctor Bell, who assisted the Police in solving crimes. Just so many stories. Easy to love the City. I’m sure I can’t blame you, but it rained hard here yesterday. Much needed of course. Lol maybe you should get a pat on the back, for sending us that rain. Enjoy yourself 😀

      @@johnbisset4504 I used to hangout at the museum mostly on Sundays in the winter in the mid 80's for the same reason lol but also to chase the girls 😮😆

      @TheDevilWearsPrada
      I love that you used the Museum for “courtship “ sorta. Lol
      Wish I could have done that to.
      But most of my time back then was spent on the models, and coins etc
      Those pre puberty days, you know, when girls were kind of “Yucky” almost alien creatures to we laddies.
      Although I did see a few very attractive “Old” ladies there. Students at Edinburgh University. In there 20’s.
      Oh how sweet it would have been to be even ten years older. Instead of just ten years old. Lol
      Not sure, but going to an all boys Catholic School, set me back years.
      Just my luck, the year after I graduated, it went Coed. Talk about bad timing.
      Thankfully I learned so much more after joining the Army. Getting tips, usually awful ones, but nice having a wing man, cheering me on.
      Thankfully eventually I did improve. But like the rest of us guys, won some, lost some. Lol

    • @johnbisset4504
      @johnbisset4504 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@@craigleith100 That made me laugh, and brought up one Memory of a huge crush, I had on a female Gym Teacher,
      Where we were forced to learn some dances. Trust me, I wasn't the only really shy lad. She had the figure, that definitely aroused libido. Even though I didn't at the time. what that feeling was. I sure did feel something, definitely.
      So she definitely was an older woman, and I do mean woman.
      One problem I did face though, even in the army, yes I was Eighteen, but looked fifteen, so most of my approaches to girls, was " Come back, when you grow up, kid ".
      I complained to my Sergeant about it, he said " Trust me when you're 40, you'll be happy". Nice to hear, but not exactly the advice was looking for. Of course was in my 'Civvies', but did better in Uniform and my best bud, backing me up, till I could do it on my own. I have to admit, I usually ended up dating younger women.
      As strange as it sounds, even today, when I tell people I'm 80 years old, they don't believe it. So guess my Sergeant was right.
      so now, I'm on the lookout for those Ladies with Social Security and Medicare. And aren't as hard for me to catch up with .lol

    I so LOVED your video! I also went to Edinburgh, Scotland all by myself for a dream vacation. Everything you said I can validate! I remember breathing the air of Edinburgh was like breathing home for me. I stayed in New Town but it looks like you were in Old Town - must do that next time. Oh, don't forget to go to the Prince Street Gardens. It is so beautiful and I met a local lady - had a wonderful chat with her. Then I ended up laughing with 3 Dutch ladies on the benches. It was a delightful day there. Looking forward to your next video!

    I have visited Edinburgh twice. Last spring my husband and I visited 7 countries during 5 weeks for his retirement trip. Edinburgh is where my heart and soul sings. The Highlands were beautiful and Loch Lomand's Luss is so pretty. My ancestors left at the Port of Leith in 1683 and something in my DNA keeps pulling me there. Wish I could afford to live there.

    Omg I live in Edinburgh, and it’s so weird seeing all the places I walk by everyday in this way and with such a lovely commentary. I’m traditionally a West Coast gal and then moved to the centre when I was a teenager, and so often I don’t feel that connected to Edinburgh, but your video that makes me feel just a bit happier to be here 😄🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
    Also side note- I know this sounds odd but any graves or sites from 1850 onwards, is considered “old” but not “old old” cause so much of the country is ancient 😄 there’s a grave in my parents town from the 1600’s!

It was just home, and, as a child, I felt safe and happy, as do most children, regardless of where they were raised. The last time ( and it probably is the last time ) that I saw Edinburgh, was 2001.

I would also recommend walking right down the royal mile and climbing Arthur seat. Also there is a amazing bar on the royal mile called whiski bar, this is where you will get a real Scottish experience, really a unique bar with live music every night (Scottish). I lived in this neighbourhood...every once in a while I take a walk just to drink it in. I've travelled far and wide and I have to say Edinburgh is exceptionally beautiful and a wonderful place to live, although sometimes it's frustrating to live somewhere and not be able to afford to do many of the things you would like to. Having said that, there are beautiful parks and walks that cost nothing, bars that have great music, festivals with free performances (although accommodation costs go through the roof when festivals are on). If you do have a fair budget available, a special treat is to take afternoon tea at the Collonades at the Signet Rooms just behind St Giles Cathedral on the High Street. A special dinner I would go to Rhubarb at Prestonfield Hotel. St Giles Cathedral is a must see. For wonderful greek bakery go to Greek Artisan Pastries on Bread Street, and for a treasure trove of vintage and antique furniture, lights, clothes, jewellry, go to Aquarius on the corner of Spittal Street. For posh drinks go to Tiger Lily on George Street, it's really great ambience. If you are on a shoestring, Edinburgh has lots of reasonable little takeaways, cafes and restaurants around Bread Street, Westport, Clerk Street, Morrison Street. I've never been to Wings on Old Fishmarket Close, but my kids tell me it is very very tasty and very very reasonable :)
