  • Walnut and Maple Pixelated Segmented Vase!
    In this video I will be cutting over 700 segments from walnut and maple, gluing them together and turning it into a large vase! The pattern is a gradient from dark to light, in a pixelated effect! The wall thickness all the way down is 6mm which makes the vase very light. I finished the vase with chestnut products hard wax oil and burnishing cream!

    Beautiful Sean. I think I prefer the medium size one with scattered pattern. You are becoming a master at segmented projects Ha Ha. I’m surprised you get such a good fit of the timber using your drop saw, but it seems to work. I just made a segmented sliding table for my table saw, and I bought some segmented wedgies, which is a great idea, so look into it buddy! Cheers, Sean

    Love it! When you are glueing the segments together while mounted on the lathe, are you just eyeballing them to be centered?

  • @eric44707
    @eric44707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice! How long would this take if you were not videoing? Start to finish.

  • @darrensmith8392
    @darrensmith8392 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi. Guess it depends on the size of the piece being turned and material but do you have a favoured lathe speed?

  • @jeffcarr392
    @jeffcarr392 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I appreciate that it's not gripping viewing but nobody seems to discuss how they came up with the pattern, or how they didnt mess it up, as one misplaced piece could spoil the pattern. You didnt seem to follow any plan, it just seemed you were placing them any old how. Great piece.

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeff. It depends on the pattern, for something like this it can be a bit random as it's meant to look like a random gradient (obviously as the rings go up I put less and less walnut segments in each ring). But for my largest segmented vase, that had a set pattern (a maze) where every piece had to be in the right place, if one was off the pattern was ruined. I think i explained that in that video if you are interested.

  • @stun9771
    @stun9771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You seem to have got this style of construction for your vase’s down to a fine art now Sean, albeit the preparation must be a bit tedious. What are you using to sharpen your lathe Chisels...?.... great job and nice finish...👍🏻

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey mate! thanks a lot... they take a long time but worth it in the end! I just use a record power grinder with a fine wheel on it. Not the most professional system, a pro edge, carbide wheel or tormek would be better. But it's working for me at the moment.

  • @sethbrettell5952

    Great work Sean that size blank on the lathe is hard to turn andtakes skill to make

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Seth! Yeah when you get to that size or bigger it begins to chatter or vibrate, gotta have a steady hand

  • @rbbobnichols
    @rbbobnichols 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another great turning project, Sean. Just wondering - when you were gluing-up each ring, was it totally random, something in your mind's eye or was there a "cheat sheet" somewhere??? I'm not sure if the "obsessive compulsive" in me would succeed in a project like this without some sort of a "cheat sheet". Initially, I did miss your commentary, but as I got further into the video it became obvious there was a lot of repetition, so commentary was not really required.

    Hi Sean great turning, what angle did you use for the segments

    • @SeanEvelegh
      @SeanEvelegh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI John, thanks alot... I honestly can't remember, but i do know it was 24 segmented per ring. I think there are calculator websites that find angles for you. Hope that helps

    • @SeanEvelegh

      Hey Cameron, glad you liked it! I glued on 4 rings at a time, and turn them the next day.... so 24 hours ish

      Hey sean, It's an axminster bandsaw, forgot the model number but it's easy to find on the axminster website. and I think i used a 1/2" 6tpi blade
