I purchased about 15 solar lights from the dollar store. I keep them in my back yard in my raised garden beds. They charge all day outside and if we lose power we go grab them off the stakes and bring them inside to light the house. Not searching for batteries or flashlights and not risking a fire with the kids using candles. Plus the next day we just put them back outside to recharge back up!
Having a plan to wash clothes and dishes should also be included in a plan. Sometimes it may be power that is the issue and sometimes water. But thinking ahead and planning for it is crucial for being prepared. A great way to prep is by stopping in the middle of a task and asking “how would I navigate this task if we did not have power or water?” Makes you really see holes in your preps. Great video!

GREAT point! I have a supply of paper plates and plastic utensils to get me thru a short outage. Also bought a clothes drying rack which I can use inside the house or out on the deck. One of those portable “sun showers” might be a great idea for showers, laundry and dish washing? Water gets very hot.

If you rent a storage unit, try to protect your stuff against roof leaks and against standing water on the floor of the unit if any if the fire suppression sprinklers go off in the building. I recommend storing smaller things inside plastic tote bins with taped-on lids and then covering everything with a tarp or a plastic shower curtain. If you can get larger items off the floor by setting them on wooden pallets that can help too. Learned all this the hard way.

Sometimes, thought, they don't seal, and the air will leak, if that happens, use the vacuum cleaner again to take out the air and seal with duct tape. I've had this happen with different brands.

Thanks JR, great advice. One thing I'm doing is to make sure I have items in the house that might be needed if for some reason we can't go outdoors. I have a detached garage and store a lot of my preps out there, but if I need to stay indoors I want to make sure I have some water stored indoors and my single burner butane stove with some fuel for it. Also plastic sheeting and tape in case I need to seal up windows and doors.

I had a similar issue during the ice storm a couple of years ago. One of our preps was in the attic, and a car was parked under the access ladder. We probably could have reached it if necessary, but it’s location would have complicated things.

Yes you are right Chris. There's plenty of info for cold climates but very little I've found for hot or tropical climates and particularly for rental living with mandatory 3 monthly inspections where they take photos every time. As there are no basements allowed here and no fallout shelters, it is not easy to prepare.

I would really like a comprehensive video covering car emergency kit -- stuff that lives in the car. Something that's practical for a normal passenger car. My son is off at college, and I would like to get him a better car emergency kit (for car emergencies, weather/traffic delays, and break downs). He's in Houston, so hurricane evacuation is something he needs to be prepared for. In addition, I want to know can handle any road side emergency that comes his way. He already has a trauma/first aid kit and some basic tools. I struggle with the food aspect. I did get some of the SOS ration bars and SOS water pouches.

Like the heavier weight vacuum bags for clothes, blankets, curtains, yarns, lines -- list goes on & on. Items will be safe & clean if packed properly so no need to re-wash. Even fabric bags & satchels and some kinds of shoes. Cuts down on space and can easily be hung on hooks on the wire shelf racks or closet rods which can, of course, be in closets or run between shelves.
